TIME: 1 SESSION TO RESEARCH ATTITUDES AND GENERATE THE IDEA OF THE ARTWORK
1-2 SESSIONS FOR COMPLETING THE ARTWORK
Usually the scales for an object are selected to focus on three universal dimensions:
judgement (e.g. good – bad), strength (e.g. strong – week) and activity (e.g. slow - fast).
When using the semantic differential as a starting point of an artwork we can be a lot freer
and approach the selection of the bipolar scales creatively.

The results can be interpreted for example through a visual metaphor that originates from
the data of attitudes and returns to open up the object of research. What colour could be as
interesting, good, active and objective as ETV or TV3 in our data? Which image and form
could express it best? Could the idea be presented as a painting, an installation, a photo or a
performance?

A classic method to research attitudes is Osgood’s semantic differential that measures
people’s reactions to stimulus words by using simple bipolar scales. At the ends of the
bipolar scale are opposite adjectives: e.g. pretty – ugly, smart – silly etc. that have been
selected according to the object of research. For example when studying attitudes towards
media channels adjectives like objective – subjective are more suitable than sour – sweet,
that can also be used for artistic purpose.

If the objects of research (e.g. TV channels) and the scales that characterize them have
been found (either individually or as group work), the position of the object on all scales has
to be marked. E.g.:

Attitude is a person’s tendency to estimate the nature of someone or something favourably
or unfavourably. Attitudes are constant by nature and similar to the term inertia from
physics – an object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion with the
same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force (Newton’s
First Law). To change an attitude also a force is required that pushes for change, shakes the
perspective and makes someone think.

Art has been fulfilling different missions during the history – to support people’s faith, to
praise the rulers, offer aesthetic pleasure, point out issues and make people think about
something. The thought-provoking contemporary art is often honestly subjective based on
the values and attitudes of the author.
