“The only real security that a man will have in this world is a reserve of knowledge,
experience, and ability.” — Henry Ford
This quote is one of many inspiring truths etched into the International Promenade.
Students step across these sayings on their way to class each day, knowing that learning
at High Point University extends well beyond traditional classroom walls.
At High Point University, students are inspired by international flags that line the
Promenade, sculptures of historic and academic legacies, and calming outdoor music
that provides a backdrop for campus life. In addition, High Point University has become a
culture of strong values and character traits. The school models ideals — such as hospitality,
generosity, and confidence — to stress the importance of these principles in daily life and in
the business world.
When students dine in an on-campus five-star steakhouse weekly, the value of etiquette
assumes higher appreciation. When a campus concierge arranges airport transportation,
dry cleaning services or tutoring sessions for a student, that young person is more likely to
exhibit the value of service to others. And when students are able to study in the beautiful
Learning Commons, confidence and purpose call them to achieve.
The High Point University community fosters a deep sense of respect and responsibility
and urges students toward greater success and significance.

“A quick glance at High Point University reveals a beautiful campus full of amenities, but
the unique edge is that all of campus is a classroom. The holistic learning here at HPU
has shown me the importance of values like generosity, confidence, and joy. While any
university would find these values impossible to teach, High Point has certainly modeled
the way for its students.”
— John Sherman, Business Administration major from Atlanta, Georgia
Galileo, an Italian philosopher, astronomer and
mathematician, is a scientific legacy. What many don’t
know is that Galileo earned his fame by turning a sailor’s
common looking glass skyward. Through this simple act,
Galileo unlocked galaxies of potential and used an average
tool to accomplish greatness. Had Galileo not looked up,
modern constellations, Saturn’s moons, and the rotation
of planets may never have been discovered. The holistic
education at High Point University allows students to explore
new perspectives and extract greatness from what the
untrained eye would see as common.

HPU Interior Design
Program Ranked
Among Top 10
In Country
The Interior Design Program at High Point
University has recently been ranked as one of the
top 10 undergraduate design programs in the
country by “DesignIntelligence” journal.
The rankings were part of the 11th annual
“America’s Best Architectural & Design Schools”
study, which includes research from some of
the largest design firms in the United States.
Those who conducted the research asked about
many program-related issues, as well as the
preparedness of graduates, program educators,
how programs rate in teaching various skills and
more. As a result of the research, firms determined
which college and university programs have the
best prepared students for professional practice.
Cathy Hillenbrand-Nowicki, coordinator of
the interior design program, notes that the
combination of talented and dedicated faculty
with creative and motivated students equals an
outstanding program that happens to be located
in the furniture capital of the world.
Students at High Point University benefit from a unique new academic facility, the Plato S. Wilson School
of Commerce. The key feature in this highly professional building is the Center for Financial Research.
The center essentially serves as a trading room — making students feel like they’re in the middle of Wall
Street, says Dr. Jim Wehrley, dean of the Earl N. Phillips School of Business at HPU. There, students have the
chance to receive real-world, practical learning opportunities. Wehrley says the center includes teaching and
research technology, including financial databases, investment software, professional accounting programs,
a stock ticker, dual monitors, smart boards, multiple screens and world clocks.
“The state-of-the-art technology helps our students prepare for careers in the financial field by allowing
them to track key investments with customized portfolio windows, access profit and loss statements in realtime, and to view the analytic impact of their portfolio performance in a daily, weekly, monthly and annual
manner,” says Dr. Steve Lifland, associate professor of finance at HPU. “The center will also serve as a spot
to host local and regional financial professionals from such fields as security investments, commercial real
estate and investment banking.”

Are There Opportunities
Academic
for Scholars? Scholarship Programs
Honors Program
The High Point University Honors Program allows
students to develop more in-depth perspectives through
intellectually challenging experiences, both in curricular
and co-curricular capacities. While all honors level
courses stress advanced interpretive methodology,
critical thinking, research methods and analytical
writing techniques that go above and beyond the typical
undergraduate curriculum, students in the Honors
Program have the unique opportunity for increased
interaction with faculty, creating larger outlets for
intellectual growth and stimulation.
The Honors Program has exclusive benefits for its
members, including research assistantships, honors
coursework, lectures with visiting scholars, participation
in the Honors Day symposium, membership to the
Odyssey Club (the social organization for the Honors
Program), scholarship opportunities and access to
honors housing.
The Presidential Scholarship Program is a meritbased academic scholarship program established
in 1976 that recognizes high school seniors who,
during their high school careers, demonstrated
superior academic achievement, good citizenship,
and strong leadership. The Presidential Scholarship
Program supports University Fellows, Presidential
Fellows, Presidential Scholars, High Point Fellows,
and High Point Scholars. Students who have engaged
themselves in a demanding high school curriculum
and have SAT scores ranging from 1120–1600 (critical
reading + math) or ACT scores between 25 and 36 are
encouraged to apply. Qualified applicants should submit
their Presidential Scholarship Program applications by
December 20, 2011. Semifinalists will be notified by
January 7, 2012 if they qualify to take part in a series
of interviews during the
Presidential Scholarship
Weekend (February
2012). Please visit www.
highpoint.edu/presidential
for more information.
Currently, 33% of enrolled
students are Presidential
Scholarship recipients.

“The sum of experiences through funded research, faculty interaction, and out-ofthe-classroom activities makes our students quite competitive for graduate schools
and careers. For example, Stephen Ako-Nai, a 2008 graduate in chemistry who is
now a full-time student at Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences,
built a model rocket engine in his sophomore year. This led to a summer research
experience at the Excellence in Cardiovascular Sciences Summer Research Program.
He presented results of his research at three different professional venues. When he
applied for a job in chemistry during the summer before his senior year, the employer
was more interested in his research experiences than his courses and grades. We’ve
seen numerous other graduates follow a similar path to graduate schools and
industry, demonstrating the importance of undergraduate research for their careers.”

“Getting involved at HPU has got to be
one of the easiest things you can do and
it makes your experience at the University
even more extraordinary. With High
Point’s growth and expansion, the number
of clubs and organizations has grown
dramatically and there is absolutely a
place for every student. From social and
service fraternities and sororities, to club
and intramural sports, to clubs within your

High Point also offers an academic series called “Study America” which allows
students to attend classes and complete coursework in a U.S. location that is related
to the course content. Recent trips have allowed students to study the History and
Literature of Mark Twain while traveling along the Mississippi River, and the History
of Sport by hopping from one sports hall of fame to the next along the east coast.
Future trip ideas include a Civil Rights tour retracing much of the bus route of the
Freedom Riders from the early 1960s, with stops in Atlanta, Birmingham, Anniston,
and other towns and cities that played a significant role in the Civil Rights Movement.
Another Study America trip may be called History on the Road and take students to
study American History in Boston.

“Studying in Spain was the best experience of my life!
I learned not only in class, but I also learned a lot about
myself and the world. Europe is a beautiful place, rich
with history and full of things to see and do. I lived with
a family while I was there, and the woman was like my
second mother — I still call her to this day! I will never
forget my experience in Seville, and I hope to return
one day. I definitely recommend studying abroad!”

What About Sports?
High Point’s Panthers compete in NCAA Division I athletics in the Big South Conference.
The University sponsors seven intercollegiate sports for men and eight for women. In
addition to conference play, Panther teams have competed against schools such as UNCChapel Hill, University of Kentucky, Florida State University, University of Maryland, North
Carolina State University, and Duke University. Our men’s basketball team played two-time
NCAA champion University of Florida during the 2007–2008 season.
In 2003, the Big South signed TV agreements that expanded coverage of intercollegiate
competition. Coverage of men’s and women’s basketball is carried on ESPN, Fox Sports
Net, Comcast Sports Southeast, and the Big South Television Network.
When the women’s soccer team won its fourth Big South
Conference Championship, HPU was reborn into
the NCAA tournament and matched-up in the first round
with perennial soccer powerhouse and nationally-ranked, #4
UNC-Chapel Hill. The Panthers traveled sixty miles east to face
the nineteen-time national champion on their home turf.
HPU held the Tar Heels scoreless for almost 70 minutes but a
late goal by UNC gave them the hard-fought victory.
“We knew coming into the game that playing North Carolina,
with their speed, athleticism and outstanding players,
demanded a strong game plan against them. So we came up
with a different strategy and it paid dividends. I thought the girls played fantastically.
I am extremely proud of our kids,” said Panthers Head Coach Marty Beall.
Continuing a tradition of academic excellence,
123 of High Point’s student-athletes achieved
a GPA of 3.0 or better for the fall semester,
and 14 Panthers earned a 4.0 GPA for the fall
semester. The athletic department had a
cumulative GPA of 3.09 for
the school year.

HPU Earns
ESPN’s Top Play
HPU’s junior 6-foot-2 guard, Shay Shine has garnered
national attention with his dunks this season. His dunk
over Cunningham of UNC-Asheville on Dec. 4 at the
Millis Center was ESPN SportsCenter’s No. 1 play of
the day and the weekend. It has been viewed millions
of times on YouTube and has been featured on Yahoo!
Sports as well as countless other websites. Shine has
been featured several times on ESPN SportsNation as
well as other times on TV.
His dunk over Cunningham wasn’t the only time Shine
was featured on ESPN’s top plays this season. Shine
repeated his feat with a nearly identical dunk over
6-foot-10 forward Walt Allen of Presbyterian on Feb. 1
at the Millis Center. That dunk was featured as ESPN
SportsCenter’s No. 2 play of the night. Both of Shine’s
dunks came at key points in HPU victories.

with perennial soccer powerhouse and nationally-ranked, #4

Big Changes
Bring Excitement
to HPU Athletics
The HPU Athletic department has enjoyed its
fair share of changes as part of the extraordinary
improvements being made around the entire campus
at High Point University.
From the opening of Vert Track & Soccer Stadium and
the Steele Athletic Center, to the renovations at Coy O.
Williard Sr. Baseball Stadium, to the recently completed
multi-million dollar enhancements in the Millis Center,
there is an excitement and a “buzz” around Panther
Athletics. High Point games in every sport are the place
to be for students.
In addition to physical changes, several High Point
athletic programs have welcomed new coaches or
entire coaching staffs. The future for Panther teams
has never been brighter!

What Does
the Campus
Look Like?
Students have access to common areas,
equipped with comfortable furniture,
arcade games, and plasma televisions!
High Point University is unlike anything you’ve ever seen. Close your
eyes and imagine manicured gardens surrounded by brick walkways,
over 100 flags acknowledging students from across the world, and a
spread of new buildings decorated with Georgian-styled architecture.
Inspiration is around every corner! The campus offers students a
wide variety of places to connect, from top-notch classrooms, elegant
lounge areas, and dining facilities to pools, fitness centers, and a
video game arcade. On game nights, you’ll see spirit-filled students
pack into our new sports stadiums and athletic fields to cheer on the
Division I teams and show their Panther pride. You can walk from one
end of our 230-acre campus to the other in about 10 minutes. But
why would you, when you’ll want to stop and chat with friends and
faculty, enjoying the many fountains and sculptures or the signature
hammocks of University Park.
This is a residential campus with 98% of our freshmen living in
residence halls. Students stay on campus and participate in the
University meal plan — even enjoying a meal from our five-star
steakhouse, 1924 Prime, once a week. Residence halls feature
air-conditioning, ceiling fans, cable TV and wireless Internet in each
room. There is a mix of traditional suite-style residence halls, luxurious
double dorms with full size beds, and apartment-style housing
available on campus.
To provide resources worthy of one of America’s top universities,
we’ve recently launched a ten year $2.16 billion investment plan.
Our vision began in the summer of 2005 with enhancing technology,
adding and renovating facilities, and beautifying the campus. Our
entire campus is now wireless and complete with state-of-the-art
touch-screen and SMART BoardTM technology for our classrooms. The
past five years have included the completion of the University Center,
the Nido R. Qubein School of Communication, Earl N. Phillips School of
Business, the Slane Student Activity and Wellness Center, the Plato S.
Wilson School of Commerce, four residence halls, and a new athletic
park and sports center complex including the Steele Sports Center,
the Vert track and soccer Stadium, the Williard Baseball Stadium,
and intramural fields. Beautification efforts include spectacular
fountains, gardens, brick and wrought-iron fences, landscaping, and
the incredible Hayworth University Park with a waterfall, amphitheatre,
bridges, ponds, and walking trails.
“With all of the big things going on at HPU — like new
academic buildings, renovated dorms, and campus
beautification — it’s great to see that High Point hasn’t lost
sight of the details. Students enjoy free hot chocolate and
breakfast bars on their way to class in the morning, and
cold drinks and snacks in the afternoon. It’s easy to feel at
home here!”

Our campus fosters a strong sense of connection among students, faculty and the High Point community each
year by providing unforgettable shared experiences when High Point University presents the Cultural Enrichment

Continuing the High Point University tradition
of bringing successful world-class speakers to
campus, the seven-time winner of the Tour de
France, Lance Armstrong was the 87th annual
commencement speaker on May 7, 2011.
“Each year, we aim to set positive examples for
our graduating seniors who are just about to step
out into the real world and begin their careers,” says
HPU President Dr. Nido R. Qubein. “Lance Armstrong
is a shining example of hard work and dedication
— and what it really means to work toward a goal.
He is a champion who stays at the top of his game
through his positive outlook and determination to
make a difference; his message inspired our 2011
graduates to go out and succeed.”
Armstrong, who is best known for his Tour de
France victories, also won his personal battle
with cancer. He achieved his first U.S. National
Amateur Championship in 1991. Soon after,
he became a professional cyclist. He then went
on to represent the United States in the 1992
Summer Olympics. From there, he participated
in race after race, winning titles and moving up
in the cycling world. By the time he entered the
1996 Summer Olympics, he was the No. 1
ranked cyclist in the world.
Shortly after the Olympics in 1996, when
Armstrong was 25 and becoming increasingly
successful, he was diagnosed with stage three
cancer. Though his chances for recovery were slim,
a determined Armstrong began an aggressive form
of chemotherapy. With the advice of specialists,
he tried a course of treatment that gave him a
chance for a full recovery with less danger of losing
lung capacity as a side effect. Remarkably, the
chemotherapy began to work, and he gradually
allowed his thoughts to return to racing. He went
on to win the Tour de France a record seven
consecutive years: 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002,
2003, 2004, and 2005.

They draw over 100,000 visitors from more than 100 countries.
For all students, the Furniture Markets each April and October create a
