Pink Floyd PAGE FOUR FRIDAY, MAY 16, 2014 2014 Top Seniors Her future plans are to attend Bowling Green State University. She is currently undecided on the major that she wants to have once she begins attending college. Amelia would like to thank her parents who “noticed I was getting too stressed out about things, would either plug in Pink Floyd or [force] me to take a break.” to thank the parents, who encouraged her to begin and continue music throughout the years. Chris McComas Valedictorian, Chris McComas, is the highest achieving senior student at Harding this year. Chris’ GPA for this year was 6.377. He was diverse in his choices for activities, including Marching Band, Symphonic Band, Stardusters, CrossCountry, and National Honor Society. Chris has made many memories during the last four years, but the most memorable to him was when he achieved his new personal best crosscountry time at the Harding Invitational. “The Course was practically a swamp, but I was able to make my final home invitational a record-breaking event.” Chris, ultimately, plans to participate in the Honors Program at Youngstown State University and pursue a degree in civil engineering and, in the meantime, Chris plans to finish his academic and extracurricular obligations and prepare for graduation. Chris says, “I owe numerous people gratitude for the support I have been given throughout my educational career. I cannot choose specific individuals.” Kayla Croyle Logan Hendricks Kathleen Lightfoot Kathleen Lightfoot is ranked 3rd within the class of 2014, and has maintained a GPA of 6.088 for the term of her senior year. Kathleen has been in many activities here at Harding during her four years of high school, involving herself in Marching Band, Choir, Musical, and many other musical activities. Kathleen has ambitious after high school plans of becoming an author after studying English at the Ohio State University. The most memorable thing that has happened to Kathleen during her years at the school was when the symphonic band went to state and received a superior rating the same year that the marching band also received a superior rating at their state competition. Kathleen wants to thank not only her friends for the great memories she made in high school, but also her teachers for making her high school experience enjoyable. Finally she would like Logan Hendricks is ranked 4th in the 2014 graduating class with a GPA of 5.864. Ahead of time, Logan would like to give special thanks to his parents for pushing him through the past thirteen years. Also Mr. Matthews for inspiring him and interesting him into the field of finance. Logan has been involved with many activities here at Harding which include: Nation Honor’s Society, basketball statistician/ manager, guidance office worker, Envirothon, Earth day clean-up, Buckeye Boys’ State, and the ICAN center of excellence. Logan says his most memorable moment at Harding has been, “being at the varsity basketball game this year at Big Walnut. Jesse Ansley made the gamewinning 3-point shot at the buzzer. It was a great way for the varsity team to get their first win with a tough schedule. Moments like that make me proud to be a President.” After high school comes to an end Logan plans on attending The Ohio State University at Marion to earn a degree in finance/ business management. Kayla Croyle, ranking 5th in the senior class, has a GPA of 5.813. Kayla was also on the volleyball team, the basketball team and apart of national honors society. Kayla says her future goals are to attend Kent State to major in zoology and to eventually become a veterinarian. Kayla’s most memorable moment at Harding would either have to be winning homecoming queen or United Service Day. Kayla states, “That was pretty awesome.” Kayla says, “I would like to thank my mom, my dad, Hannah, Mr. Mathews, and Mr. McClelland.” Amy Steinberger Amy Steinberger has been ranked has number 2 in the class of 2014. Her GPA was a 6.179 this year. She has been very involved in her four years at Harding participating in Rufus, Star Dusters, Marching band, Orchestra, and National Honor Society. One of her most memorable moments in the four years that she has been here at Harding include making rockets in physics class. PAGE FIVE FRIDAY, MAY 16, 2014 2014 Top Seniors Lexas Teague Sara Davis Sara Davis is ranked 6th in the senior class with a GPA of 5.656. Her most memorable moment was, “This year, I reluctantly joined the swim team…Best. Decision. Of my life. The coaches were so supportive and the team was like no other. There was one meet where everyone had to swim EVERY event and I never felt so supported, even when I was doing terrible, they still cheered like I was winning the Olympics.” Her top activities at Harding were marching band, swimming, tennis, National Honor Society, and concert band. Her future plans are to attend the University of South Florida to major in marine biology and be part of a rescue team. On the subject of giving thanks, Sara said, “Obviously everyone was a big help in getting me through high school, but Mr. Matthews was by far a huge inspiration to me, especially this year as I was getting into college and everything.” Jennifer Schott Jennifer Schott has a GPA of 5.652 and is ranked 7th of the 2014 senior class. Her future plan is to go to Tiffin University to study forensic chemistry. Schott’s top activities at Harding were National Honor Society, Symphonic Choir, and musical. Her most memorable moment at Harding was “freshman year in Mrs. Hecker’s class, doing improv at the end of the year because everyone had so much fun with it.” Jennifer would like to give special thanks to Mr. Matthews, Amy Steinberger, and Yoda. Miranda Potts Miranda Potts is ranked 8 of the senior class of 2014. She participated in many different activities. Her top activities were Swimming, Tennis, Youth Engaging Philanthropy, and National Honor Society. She had many memories, she said her favorite one was, “Trying new things with my friends and laughing at how ridiculous we looked.” Her plans after school are to study psychology and education at the University of Cincinnati. She would like to give a special thanks to her teachers, parents, and friends for helping her be as successful as possible. “ I honestly couldn’t have done it without them continually pushing me.” Lexas Teague, ranked 9th in the senior class with a GPA of 5.519, was very much involved in soccer throughout her high school career. Teague was also involved in swimming and some of Harding’s musical programs, which include orchestra, symphonic choir, and a few musical productions. Teague plans to have one of the most memorable summers of her life after graduation. She said, “Jay Peterson and I have a bucket-list of things that I really want to do before starting my college career.” The first trip the couple will have is heading to New York City and Niagara Falls, and Teague is extremely excited about her plans. She will be attending The Ohio State University (Columbus) this fall and is currently undecided on her major. “My most memorable moment at Harding was not really just a moment,” Lexas said. She went on, saying that her favorite memory was something that developed throughout her high school career- all the friendships that she made and all of the relationships and bonds that were created. Lexas articulates, “I was honored to meet and become friends with amazing and talented people, and that would be my most memorable moment at Harding.” A special thanks that Lexas would like to give is to Mrs. Jenni Jury who, Teague said, helped throughout the seniors’ high school career. Mrs. Jury always knew how to “fix all of my problems and did them happily no matter how much I bugged her.” Furthermore, shebelieves that all the Harding counselors do not get the recognition that they deserve, or that is “proportional to the level of work and time invested in improving our high school lives.” William Moodie William “Billy” Moodie has ranked 10th in his class of 2014 with a GPA of 5.403. His future plans are to attend OSUM for a major in education. Billy’s top activities at Harding were running track and cross country. Another top activity he participated in at Harding was working with the National Honor Society. He wants to give a shout out to his little sister, Jennifer. He also wants to give a shout-out to his friends, and a special thanks to Anthony Grill and Tanner Hale for helping him stay sane during track. Billy’s most memorable moment at Harding was his freshman cross country season. He could never forget Dylan Johnson or Katie Reid [who at the time, were seniors]. Retiring staff members leaving Harding RUBY ADKINS Ruby Adkins, Food Services Cook-Manager, is retiring after 26½ years. She spend 24½ years at the old Harding and 7 years at the present building. Mrs. Adkins attended Mullins High School in Pikeville, Kentucky. “Although a lot has changed,” She says, she has enjoyed her time at Harding. Mrs. Adkins plans to “get out of here and enjoy life.” She says. Although she is leaving Harding she is staying in Marion to spend time with her grandchildren. Mrs. Adkins would like to thank Nacy Retchler who introduced her to services at Harding. ployability, and transitions. “I have had a wonderful experience here at Harding. My mentor and friend who helped me become the teacher I am today was Estelle Fark, who retired from here a few years ago,” Mrs. Berringer said. Mrs. Berringer achieved her undergraduate degree from Miami University in 1981. She obtained her masters degree from Ashland in 1995. She started teaching in 1981 in Penta County Vocational School and has been teaching at Harding since 1986. After retiring, Mrs. Berringer’s first grandbaby will be born in September. She said, “I am planning on many trips there to spend time with them.” She will also have time to make quilts—her favorite hobby. “Over the years I have had the privilege of working with very supportive teachers, administrators, and awesome students. I will miss the students who worked hard, who shared their lives and hearts with me in class.” world geography, American history, psychology, sociology, developmental psychology, and economics. Cameron received his bachelor’s degree at Bowling Green State University and his master’s degree at Ashland. Cameron would like to thank Principals Vaughn Williams, Mike McCreary, Carol Bebout, Kirk Koennecke, and his fellow teachers for “making work a fun place to come most every day.” He is uncommitted on his future plans at this time. Throughout his 30 years at Harding High School he has taught DEB SANCHEZ BLAINE PITTS LISA BERRINGER Mrs. Lisa Berringer is one of the five retiring teachers this year. She’s a family and consumer sciences teacher and teaches child development, financial fitness, em- His future plans are to plan on going back to work part time or full time. He is currently working part time at Honda. He has put an application in for teaching gym at a couple of local schools. He really didn’t have much left to say, but he did add, “If anything, I miss the kids the most!” Mr. Blaine Pitts a retired teacher at Harding, he taught for nine years. He taught health all nine years, and about 2 years ago is when he starting teaching lifetime fitness. He doesn’t really have any special thanks, “I enjoyed working with all of the staff and the nice people.” Mrs. Deb Sanchez was salutatorian in 1975 at Mohawk High School attended Bowling Green State University and received a degree in mathematics education in 1979, then went back in 1989 to receive a degree in guidance and counseling. She was a math teacher and guidance counselor at Harding High School for 35 years. As Sanchez’s retirement begins, she plans to travel, as well as spend time with her husband and family. “I would like to thank all of my former and present colleagues for sharing their wisdom and expertise with me.
