Story events
Jimmy’s boa coils along the side of this comprehension project!
Have students recap chosen story events with one of the options
below. Then ask each youngster to color a copy of the boa pattern on
page 7 and cut along the bold line. To complete the project, tape the
boa’s head to the top left corner of the youngster’s paper as shown.
Then drape the boa along the side of the paper and tape it in place.

Jimmy gets an unusual souvenir from the farm: a pet pig!
After you read the surprise ending, ask students to discuss
what it would be like to have a pig. Prompt them to think
about details such as food and a place for the pig to sleep.
Then ask each student to write about the topic. Next, staple
each youngster’s completed writing between two sheets
of construction paper. To decorate the front cover of the
resulting booklet, the youngster draws a pig face on a small
pink circle. Next, she glues two ears to the head, bends the
tips of the ears forward, and then glues the head to a larger
pink circle as shown. She tapes a twisted pipe cleaner to the
back of the pig to make a tail. Then she glues the pig to the
booklet, writes a title, and signs her name.

Evaluating characters’ behavior
The field trip would have been so different if Mrs. Stanley’s class
had behaved better! At the end of the story, ask students to share their
thoughts about the characters’ behavior. Then divide students into small
groups and give each group a sheet of paper. Have each group brainstorm
three tips that would help Mrs. Stanley’s class on another field trip. Ask
the groups to use words or pictures to record their tips. After each group’s
list is complete, compile all of the tips into one list with students’ help.
