Depression; and the patriotism of the World War II years, all from
the perspective of the Burrells, one of the founding families of
Sheffield, Ohio. This is the world premier of this commissioned

Based on the 1937 John Steinbeck novel by the
same name, ‘Of Mice and Men’ is a tragic story
of friendship, compassion, and despair. Two
migrant workers, George and Lenny, move from
town to town seeking farm work during the Great
Depression. George takes care of the mentally
challenged Lenny as the two pursue their dream of
owning a farm of their own. But Lenny’s handicap
causes many problems for both of them along the
way, and soon George must decide if it’s better to
love Lenny or to let him go. ‘Of Mice and Men’
was the recipient of the 1938 New York Drama
Critics’ Circle Award for Best Play. Special daytime
student matinees are available for this production.

...At Miller Nature Preserve
Something for everyone...
In every season...
WINTER, SPRING, SUMMER, OR FALL: WHICH IS YOUR FAVORITE?
If you visited Miller Nature Preserve that could be a tough question to answer. Why?
Because we have something for everyone, every season!
Settled within an 80+ acre oasis in the heart of Avon on SR 83 just off I-90, Miller Nature Preserve offers quick
and easy access that encourages visitors to make it a destination. Lorain County Metro Parks planned the
reservation, made possible by the generous donation by Buddy Miller, in stages over many years. Our goal was to
offer visitors, both local, and regional, a unique and educational experience.
Since opening May of 2011, we have grown by leaps and bounds. The grounds feature a visitor center with a
unique gift shop, a café, and a 5,000-square foot conservatory. It includes an event patio, outdoor gardens,
butterfly house, and a trail that opened in November of 2013. We always strive to improve our parks, so expect
more gardens and other features in the near future.
When you visit for the day and really explore the park and all of its unique qualities and offerings, you will be
impressed and have the desire to come back again and again.
Conservatory- this ‘glasshouse’ may be small, but it has a big impact as you stroll through the different plant
collections and discover the beauty and tranquility within the different biomes. The conservatory also features
several seasonal displays that inspire you to become creative in your own backyard or small space. The displays
illustrate the use of different designs, materials, or plants that you may never have thought of planting.
Orchid Café- boasts a variety of cooking classes held monthly along with special events that combine music and
food, or educational opportunities with some fun. The café is open daily and is available for private functions.
Sunday brunch is on the menu the first Sunday of every month. We also offer a frequent lunch punch card.
Discover the Event Patio for all the fun! Visitors can enjoy lunch or an event on the patio, and it
is home to the ever growing Arts in the Park–music on the patio series in the summer.
Butterfly House– This popular attraction creates a unique experience where you
actually feel like you are floating with the
beautiful butterflies. In the summer,
many butterflies and
blooms are the main attraction. Attend a nature program or just enjoy the colors, and hopefully a
‘flying flower’ will land on you!
Programs- we host a variety of programs, from Kids Club events and programs, to gardening programs and many
hands-on creativity programs such as baskets, zentangle, jewelry, drawing, and more!
These programs are becoming very popular in such a peaceful and inspirational setting.
Divert yourself from the daily hustle and join us for a day... to enjoy a program, a lunch, a hike, a concert, the
peaceful scenery, the displays and plant collections, your friends.
Yearly highlights
Winter- Events range from seasonal displays, Dinner of Romance on Feb. 14, Girls’ Night Out, and craft programs.

Birding in the Winter
Many people think that once it’s winter, there’s not much wildlife worth watching.
But that’s not accurate, especially if you try birding. While it is true most of the
birds you enjoyed in the warm season are gone, winter brings
us visitors from the North. Some
locations are better than others for
finding these migrants, but you don’t
need to travel far. Your backyard is a
great place to start.
Attracting birds to your yard doesn’t
have to be expensive. Things you can
do to boost your success rates include:
Feeders– The hopper and platform
styles attract the best variety of birds.
A suet feeder is a great way to provide
much needed fat for the cold weather.
Bird Seed– Try to get mixes without
corn and less fillers. Black Oil sunflower is nutritional and highly desirable.
Cover– Positioning your feeders near shrubs and trees makes birds less vulnerable
to predators. If you get a cut tree for the holidays, put it out by the feeders for
the rest of the winter.
Water– If it’s below freezing you’d have to have a heated birdbath, but in mild
winters that’s not the case. A shallow pie tin will do nicely for drinking or bathing.
Now that you’re feeding the birds, get yourself a decent pair of binoculars and a
bird identification book. Winter visitors you should observe include the Dark-eyed
Junco, White-throated and White-crowned Sparrows, Tree Sparrows, Red-breasted

meet-and-greet sled dogs and demos, winter nature display and more!

and White-breasted Nuthatches, and a variety of Woodpeckers.
If you’re more adventurous, or just want to get out of the house, then hit the road
for a winter birding trip. Open water attracts waterfowl and gulls. If it’s a mild
winter, check out inland reservoirs and lakes. When everything is frozen, try your
luck at Miller Road park in Avon Lake. The warm water discharge will harbor
thousands of birds. If you want to see a variety of raptors, go countrycruising. The many open fields in southern Lorain County attract
hawks and owls alike.
Another great way to get into this hobby is to join us for some birding

MAPLE SUGARING
February 22, 23 • March 1, 2, 8, 9 • 10 am-4 pm
Carlisle Visitor Center
As winter winds down and spring quickly approaches, the
forest bursts to life! During warm days of late winter,
trees pump sap upward to the branches to aid in leaf
production. On nights when the temperature drops below
freezing, the trees pump the sap back underground to
prevent the water solution from freezing in the branches.
The quick rise and fall of sap is called a “run.” To collect
sap for maple sugaring, we need a combination of cold
nights coupled with warm days to keep the sap “running”
up and down the trunk of the tree. When spring is in full effect and the new tree buds
begin to burst into bloom, chemical changes take place in the sap that turn it sour and end
the maple sugaring season.
Sugar maple trees contain the highest concentration of sugar in
their sap than any other tree; on average around 2 percent. This
isn’t very much sugar, in fact, it takes approximately 40 buckets
of sap to make one bucket of syrup! This transformation takes
place by adding just one ingredient: heat. The sap is heated
to boiling temperatures in an evaporator. After the water
evaporates, you are left with sweet, sticky syrup.
To learn more about this unique process, join us at the Carlisle Visitor Center on February
22 or 23, or March 1, 2, 8, or 9 from 10 am-4 pm. We will explore the history and science
of Maple Sugaring through hands-on activities geared for all ages. Discover the secrets
of maple sugaring with a brief indoor lecture, an invigorating hike to the sugar bush and
collect sap with a Naturalist. Then visit the Sugar Shack to watch the sap transform into
syrup. Train rides through a second sugar bush also may be available, weather permitting.
