Development Commission (SMADC).
It is provided as a means to assist and promote farmers and related businesses
as Southern Maryland diversifies and transitions away from its tobacco-dependent economy.
The Southern Maryland Agricultural Development Commission is
dedicated to the following mission:
“To promote diverse, market-driven agricultural enterprises,* which
coupled with agricultural land preservation, will preserve Southern
Maryland’s environmental resources and rural character while keeping the
region’s farmland productive and the agricultural economy vibrant.”
*“Agricultural enterprises” is considered interchangeable with “natural resourcebased enterprises” and is broadly defined as tobacco-free sustainable agriculture, and includes forestry and aquatic resources and agriculturally related
activities such as agritourism and value-added processing.

services our region has to offer.
On average, food travels 1,500 miles from farm to plate in the
U.S. Food grown in your own community was probably picked
within the past day or two. It’s crisp, sweet and loaded with flavor.
It tastes better and is better for you.
When you buy direct from the farmer, you are re-establishing a
time-honored connection between the consumer and the grower. Knowing the farmers gives you insight into the seasons, the
weather, and the miracle of raising food. And when you visit an
agritourism farm or patronize stores and restaurants that buy local
produce, your dollars stay in your community.
Imagine! If every household in Southern Maryland spent just
$8 on locally grown farm products for 12 weeks, $54 million
could be invested back into our neighboring farms and economy.
“Buying Local” also supports our local agricultural economy, preserving the rich heritage and beauty of Southern Maryland as selling farmland for development becomes less likely. Picturesque
barns, lush fields of crops and meadows full of wildflowers will
survive only as long as farms are financially viable.

So Good?
So. Maryland, So Good is a campaign designed by the Southern Maryland
Agricultural Development Commission (SMADC) to help consumers identify truly Southern Maryland products and buy accordingly. By
building a direct link between buyers and growers in the five Southern
Maryland counties and promoting the advantages of buying local, we
hope to help keep farming vibrant and vital in Southern Maryland.
As a consumer, you have a unique opportunity to help preserve Southern
Maryland’s rural charm by supporting local farms.
Always look for the So. Maryland, So Good logo at stores and restaurants
and ask for Southern Maryland products where you shop and dine.
SMADC also promotes the region’s cultural heritage through the Southern
Maryland Trails and provides educational resources for children, including Cornelia and the Farm Band coloring books, animated songs, posters
and curriculum.

Welcome to the 2011-12 So. Maryland, So Good Farm Guide. This unique directory is
a handy reference to help you locate products, services, events and activities available
on our region’s farms. In addition to traditional farm products like produce and meat,
you can also find gifts, wine, workshops, family activities like corn mazes and petting
zoos, and much more! The guide even includes restaurants, stores, markets and other
businesses that feature Southern Maryland farm products.

• The farm is located in one of the five Southern Maryland counties.

• The farm has officially pledged to be part of the So. Maryland, So Good
program. This means that the farm has signed a SMSG agreement promising to predominantly sell only its own or Southern Maryland-produced/harvested products.

Some Terms to Know
Organic
Some farms are listed as “organic” farms. According to federal law, it is now illegal to
use the term “organic” unless a farm is certified. A “certified organic” farm must meet
United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and State of Maryland standards
and is annually inspected. There are some exceptions; please contact the Maryland
Department of Agriculture Organic Certification Program. The directory indicates if
the farm has been “certified organic” by the State of Maryland. Some farms may follow organic practices, but are not certified. These are listed as “may follow organic
practices, not certified” farms.

then wholesale or retail it at one of our two roadside stands.
Where to Buy: Roadside stands – Birdsville, located approximately two miles south
of Route 214 at 3800 Solomons Island Road at the intersection of Route 2 and Old
Birdsville Road. Harwood, located 4.5 miles south of Route 214 at 4475 Muddy
Creek Road in Harwood, on the Zang Family Farm, retail and wholesale (delivery or
farm pick-up).
Products: Fresh flowers, blackberries, melons (cantaloupe, watermelons), peaches
(white, yellow), gifts and crafts (gift baskets), home décor products (corn stalks,
gourds, ornamental squash), beans (snap, string, wax), corn (sweet, white), cucumbers (English), eggplant, greens (collards, kale, mustard, turnip greens), okra, peppers

The time-honored tradition of preserving food by adding acids (lemon juice
or vinegar) and processing in jars to produce pickles and relishes (acidified
foods) has been one of the most profitable ways for farms to make the most of
the season’s bounty. But until recently, foods such as pickled beets and other
acidified foods were hard to find at farmers’ markets or in local retail stores.
This was due in part to the many complex and costly regulatory requirements
that prospective on-farm processors must complete before they are able to
manufacture and sell their products.
For the past several years, SMADC has been working in close partnership
with state and local health agencies to help farms navigate these regulatory
hurdles and increase the opportunity for farms to profit through the sale of
acidified foods. As a result, there are now farms in Southern Maryland that are
fully certified and licensed to manufacture and sell acidified foods and many
varieties of farm-made pickles, relishes, etc. for sale at farm stands, farmers’
markets and stores. That’s good news for farms and delicious news for you.

Thanks to a recent SMADC initiative, many more farms in Southern
Maryland are offering a wide variety of USDA-inspected meats (lamb,
pork, beef, veal and goat), and even sausages and bacon in convenient, frozen, ready-to-buy portions.
By providing a grant to purchase two commercial capacity freezer trailers,
SMADC has made it possible for the region’s farmers to meet state DHMH
and USDA regulatory requirements for meat transportation and storage
and sales of locally raised frozen meat cuts directly to customers.
Farms also have the ability to market their products with pride, showcasing their humane practices, individual feeding and finishing methods, and
where applicable, antibiotic, steroid and hormone-free meats. And vacuum
packaging makes it easier for customers to see what they are purchasing
and helps keep the meat fresh and freezer burn resistant.
As the public becomes more aware of the benefits of locally raised meats,
many small family farms will have increased potential for profit, and consumers will have the added satisfaction of knowing their choice to ‘buy
local’ is keeping farms alive in our region.
