FIRST DANCE
After recording a fourth-place finish in the MidAmerican Conference in 1986-87, the Eastern Michigan
University men’s basketball team entered the 1987-88
season with hopes of challenging for a league title.
The then-Hurons did indeed win the school’s firstever MAC men’s basketball title, and a whole lot more,
by the time the season officially came to a close, March
18, 1988, in Lincoln, Neb.
Senior center Grant Long and freshman point guard
Lorenzo Neely were the catalysts for an overachieving
EMU squad that won the MAC regular season and
post season titles, and qualified for the school’s first-ever
NCAA-Division I Tournament appearance.
With Long providing the inside scoring punch with
a 23.2 scoring average and Neely running the offense as
the point guard, the Hurons won the MAC’s regularseason title with a 14-2 record.
Heading into the MAC Tournament as the No.
1 seed, the Green and White knocked off Western
Michigan, 95-88, in the first round and handed Ohio
University a 94-80 setback in the championship tilt.
From there it was on to the Bob Devaney Sports
Complex at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln for
the NCAA regional.
The No. 15-seeded Hurons squared off against the
No. 2-seeded University of Pittsburgh in the first round
March 18, 1988.The Panthers, paced by the highly touted
threesome of Charles Smith (31 points), Demetreus
Gore (24 points) and Jerome Lane (22), knocked off
the Hurons by a 108-90 count.
Eastern was led by guard Brad Soucie with 26.
Long, in foul trouble from the start, was limited to 15
points. Neely added 18 points.
For the season, Long was named MAC Player of
the Year and Neely was named MAC Freshman of
the Year.

On to the Sweet 16”
How sweet it was!
A veteran group of players proved that chemistry is indeed important on a basketball team
as the 1990-91 squad put EMU on the national
basketball map with an extended run at the NCAA
Championship.
Playing with four seniors in the starting
lineup, the 1990-91 team advanced all the way to
the “Sweet 16” in the NCAA tournament before
falling to national power North Carolina.
During that wondrous run into the third
round of the NCAA tournament, the Green and
White used a combination of power basketball
(Marcus Kennedy), high-flying acrobatics (the
Thomas twins, Carl and Charles), end-to-end
action (Lorenzo Neely and Kory Hallas) and a
bench that was small in numbers but big on heart
( Joe Frasor and Roger Lewis) to capture the nation’s imagination as a true “Cinderella” team.
Eastern was able to make it to the NCAA
tournament after winning its second Mid-American Conference regular-season and post-season
titles.
As MAC tournament champion, Eastern
was automatically in the NCAA field of 64 and
was sent to the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, N.Y.,
for the first round., seeded No. 12. Head Coach
Ben Braun’s crew came up with two big wins in
Syracuse. In the first game, Eastern knocked off
No. 5 seed Mississippi State, 76-56, and followed
that up with a 71-68 overtime win over No. 13 seed
Penn State. Those victories propelled EMU into
the “Sweet 16” where the No. 1 seeded Tarheels of
North Carolina, turned back a charged-up EMU
team, 93-67.
Carl Thomas was magnificent against North
Carolina, scoring 27 points in 33 minutes to earn
a spot on the All-Regional team.
On the year, center Kennedy was named MAC
Player of the Year and joining him on the All-MAC
first team was Lorenzo Neely while Carl Thomas
was a second-team All-MAC pick.

NIT 1994-95: Double OT Thriller
Hitting the Road for the NIT
It just doesn’t get any more exciting than the Eagles’ firstever appearance in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT)
March 16, 1995.
A young Eastern squad finished third in the Mid-American
Conference regular season but came on strong in the league’s
postseason tournament before bowing to Ball State in the
championship game.
With Ball State and Ohio receiving NCAA bids, the Green
and White anxiously awaited a call from the NIT.
Eastern got the nod from the NIT and was sent to Peoria,
Illinois, to face off against the Bradley Braves.
The Eagles made their first-ever NIT a memorable one
with a heartbreaking 86-85 double-overtime loss to Bradley.
With 0:34 left in regulation and trailing by three, EMU
guard Brian Tolbert connected on a three-point field goal to tie
it and force the first overtime.
Eastern raced out to a 76-72 lead in the early stages of the
first OT before Bradley rallied to tie at with 0:05 left, making
a second overtime a necessity.
The Eagles held an 85-84 lead after Theron Wilson made
two free throws but Bradley won the game with 0:07 left on
two free throws.
Eastern had four players in double figures, led by Brian
Tolbert with 23, Theron Wilson adding 20, Kareem Carpenter,
19 and Earl Boykins, 13.
The 1994-95 EMU Men’s Basketball Squad: The first-ever
NIT Tournament qualifier. Front row (L-R) Derrick Dial,
Timi Berkovitch, Naje McCune, Head Coach Ben Braun, Brian
Tolbert, Jake Olsen, and Earl Boykins. Back row (L-R) Associate Head Coach Gary Waters, Fred Reynolds, Tony King,

Dome Dance
The third trip to the NCAA Tournament
was a charm for the Eastern Michigan University
men’s basketball team.
The 1995-96 Eagles turned in one of the
most memorable seasons in school history, notching their third regular-season and postseason
MAC titles and qualifying for a third appearance
in the NCAA tournament.
Bowen Field House was charged with
electricity Sunday, March 12, 1996, when the
EMU squad, along with a huge group of fans
and supporters, was on hand for the nationally
televised NCAA Pairings Show.
The packed house of fans roared with excitement and anticipation when it was announced
that Eastern Michigan and Duke would be opponents in the Southeast Regional to be played
at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis, Ind.
The Duke Blue Devils entered the game
seeded No. 8 while the underdog Eagles of
Eastern Michigan were seeded No. 9.
Playing before a raucous crowd of 31,373
in the RCA Dome, along with a national television audience, the Eastern backcourt tandem
of Earl Boykins (23 points) and Brian Tolbert
(20) dominated, while Derrick Dial added 12
up front to lead the Eagles to a 75-60 decision
in the first round.
The second-round matchup had Eastern
squaring off against No. 1-seeded Connecticut.
The Eagles came out with a vengeance
against the heavily favored Huskies, racing to a
13-point lead, 32-19, with 12:09 left in the first
half. Eastern held a 48-47 halftime lead.
The second half belonged to UConn, however, as the Huskies out scored EMU by a 48-33
margin for the 95-81 win.
Seniors Tolbert and Theron Wilson closed
out their magnificent careers in style, with Tolbert
scoring 36, including seven triples, and Wilson
adding 18.

NCAA 1997-98: A Team of Destiny
A Team of Destiny
Heads to Connecticut
If there was ever a team of destiny,
it was the 1997-98 Eastern Michigan
University men’s basketball squad.
Those 1997-98 Eagles seemed to have
it all. Eastern possessed one of the most
dynamic backcourts in the country in Earl
Boykins and Derrick Dial. Add to that a
veteran front line of Jon Zajac, James Head
and Nkechi Ezugwu, and the Eagles were
ready for postseason action.
That group of four seniors, Boykins,
Dial, Head and Ezugwu, had gone through
the NIT wars as freshmen, and were joined
by transfer Zajac in time for the NCAA
Big Dance in 1995-96, where the Eagles
gained a national reputation with an upset
win over Duke before falling to No. 1 seed
UConn.
Yet, despite a brilliant 22-10 record
in 1996-97, the Eagles sat home at tournament time.
That postseason snub worked on the
competitive egos of the Eagles and they
responded with three great outings and
won the Mid-American Conference postseason tournament title and the crown of
MAC Champions.
As the MAC representative to the
NCAA Tournament, Eastern had hopes of
making some noise at the dance, and when
it was announced that EMU would meet
Michigan State in the first-round game in
Hartford, Conn., the players were excited
to get a shot at the Big Ten Co-Champion
Spartans.
With a national television crowd
watching, and a sellout crowd of 16,105
on hand in the Hartford Civic Center, the
No. 13- seeded Eagles displayed the poise
that they had exhibited over the past four
years, racing to an early, 16-9 lead.
No. 4 seeded Michigan State then
went to its huge size advantage and shut
down the Eagles and record an 83-71 win.
Dial closed out his brilliant career with a
game-high 29 points to go along with eight
boards while his backcourt mate, Boykins,
was held to 18 points in his final game for
