(Sewn up version, with no eyelash yarn, and no tassel.)
MATERIALS:
Knitting worsted yarn (Red Heart, variegated blue and pink 1 Skein 141 gms)
Bernat Soft Boucle (grey mix, 1 skein, 140 gms.) )
Eyelash yarn (optional, for the edging)
Crochet hook, size 8 mm. (US L 11)
Ruler or measuring tape
Darning needles
Buttons (optional)
Ribbon (optional)
( colors of yarn used)
INSTRUCTIONS: (A loose tension is recommended)
1. Holding both the knitting worsted yarn, and the light and lofty yarn, as though they were one, chain 46.
2. Single crochet in the 2nd stitch from the hook, and in each stitch across the row.
3. Chain 2 and turn, single crochet in each stitch across the row. Work in only the back loop of the stitch
from now on, throughout the pattern. (This makes a ribbed effect, and also allows the finished work to
have a soft flexibility.)
4. Repeat row 3, until the worked piece measures 15 inches, slightly stretched. (approximately 26 to 28
rows, depending on your tension.)
5. Make the front flap:
Chain 2 and turn, single crochet in the next 30 stitches.
6. Chain 2 and turn, single crochet across the row (to the bottom edge of the pod.)
7. Repeat row 6 for a total of 14 rows. Fasten off.
You will have a piece that looks sort of like this:
FORM THE HOOD: Fold the larger part of the rectangle in half. The front flap will not be included in
this fold. Sew across the fold to form the seam which will be the center of the head.
SEW UP THE BOTTOM:
Open up the bottom edges, and re-fold, with the stomach flap centered on the piece.
If you are choosing to have a button up flap, over-lap the flap about 1 inch over the other side.
If you are sewing up the stomach flap, meet the edges. (It is recommended that you not sew the flap up all
the way to the neck area. Leave approximately 10 inches of the flap un-sewn to make it easier to place the
baby in the pod.)
Sew across the bottom edge.
Sew up the flap opening if you have chosen that option.
Button-up version: sew only across the bottom.
Sew buttons on the side of the pod. Choose buttons that will fit
into the stitches of the pod, as no specific buttonholes are required.
The nature of the stitches will allow you to button anywhere.
OPTIONAL: Crochet an edge of single crochet in eyelash yarn all around the
edges of the opening.
HOW TO MAKE A TASSEL:
1. Wrap yarn around 4 fingers, about 20 times.
2. Using TWO strands of yarn, tie the bundle together securely.
3. Take two of the strands, and pass them through the center to the other side.
4. Wrap the two yarns around the bundle, and tie into a tight knot on the other side.
5. Pull the ends of the knotted yarn through to the center of the tassel, trim the ends.
6. Use the two strands of yarn remaining to tie the tassel onto your work.
FINISH UP:
Tie a satin bow, and attach to the front of the pod.
Sew a tassel to the top point of the hood.
