“Music & History Grade 11/12 Credit Courses” POLAND – SLOVAKIA – HUNGARY – AUSTRIA – SPAIN – ANDORRA – FRANCE - MONACO July 1 - 22nd, 2015 Toronto Catholic District School BOARD Day 1: TORONTO KRAKOW Departure to Krakow. Day 2: KRAKOW Arrival in Krakow, transfer to hotel, overnight accommodation in Krakow. Day 3: KRAKOW WALK Stroll around the Old City and Main Square. During the day you will visit: Wawel Castle and Cathedral, King’s Way, the Jagiellonian University, the famous Mariacki Church with a stunning gothic altar carved of linden wood by Wit Stwosz, and the beautiful renaissance Sukiennice building from the old city’s main market. We’ll finish our stroll next to the old city’s battlements Floriańska Gate and Barbakan. Overnight stay in Krakow. Day 4: OSWIECIM and WIELICZKA Wieliczka is located about 15 km south-east from Krakow and 70 km west of Oswiecim. During our 8 hr trip you will have a chance to see the biggest Nazi II WW concentration camp in Europe – Auschwitz. Later you will visit one of the most impressive underground tourist attraction in Poland – Wieliczka Salt Mine. Overnight stay in Krakow. Days 5, 6, 7: KRAKOW Daily lectures, lessons, speeches and musical rehearsals. In the afternoon there will be group activities and attractions with a professional coach. Overnight stay in Krakow. Day 8: TATRA MOUNTAINS / ZAKOPANE Trip to Zakopane, free time in the centre of the city (Krupowki street). Cable car ride to the top of Kasprowy Wierch or Gubałówka with beautiful views of the Tatra mountains. Trip to the famous wooden chapel in Jaszczurówka and visit Ski Jumping Centre near Nosal mountain. Evening in Zakopane with a concert of a local highlander’s band. Overnight stay in Zakopane. Day 9: BIALKA THERMAL POOLS DUNAJEC GORGE - earn 2x credits SZCZAWNICA After breakfast we will ride to Bialka Tatrzanska for relaxing baths in natural thermal pools. We continue our trip across the region of Podhale to the Dębno Podhalańskie well known of one of the most beautiful wooden churches in Poland. Then we will visit the castle in Niedzica,and go for rafting in the Dunajec Gorge in Pieninski National Park. The rafting ends in the town of Szczawnica. Transfer to hotel, accommodation, overnight stay in Szczawnica. Day 10: SZCZAWNICA - POPRAD Departure from Szczawnica to Poprad – the capital of the Tatra Mountains region. Relax in thermal pools with amazing views of the highest peaks of the Tatra Mountains. Evening party, local style in a mountain shelter, with a camp-fire and local delicacy bryndzowe haluszki. Overnight stay in Poprad. Day 11: POPRAD - BUDAPEST Visit the “Slovakian Paradise” – trekking in the area of deep, mysterious canyons, picturesque rivers and unique limestone formations. Departure to Hungary, dinner with gypsy music, overnight stay in Budapest. Day 12: BUDAPEST Budapest sightseeing of the Old City, Castle Hill with Fishing Tower and St Matthias church, Royal Castle (from the outside), Gellert Hill with the statue of Liberation and the Citadel. Afterwards see the Shopping Mall of Pest, Parliament, Square of Heroes, with the millennium statue, Museum of Arts (outside) and also City Park. Relaxing bath in Gellert Hot springs. Overnight stay in Budapest. Day 13: BUDAPEST VIENNA Ride to Vienna. We take a bus ride around Vienna, looking at the Museum of Art History, the Museum of Natural History, the Parliament, the Town Hall, The Votive Church, and the Cannes Museum of Applied Arts. A quick stop in the city park to take a picture by Vienna’s famous golden statue of Johann Strauss. Next, we will drive by the Hundertwasserhaus, a fairy-tale-like house with roof covered by a lush tree and bush gardens. Also we will do some sightseeing of the Schoenbrunn Palace which was a former summer emperors’ residence and also evening stroll around the Old City. Accommodation, overnight in Vienna. Day 14: VIENNA – PALMA DE MALLORCA Departure from Vienna to Palma de Mallorca in Spain. Palma offers a rich mix of history, culture and nightlife. We will see The Palau de L’Alumndaina, A Royal Palace which has stood since the Arab conquest and is still home to the Royal Family, Le Seu Cathedral also referred to as the Cathedral of Palma. We also visit Castillo de Bellver, some historic Arab Baths and walk the Old Town. Overnight stay in Palma de Mallorca. Day 15: PALMA DE MALLORCA Morning trip to Valldemossa. In this beautiful setting the tour includes a guided walk through the village and a visit to the Carthusian Monastery where the Polish composer Frederick Chopin and the French writer George Sands lived in 1838. In the afternoon you will have time to relax on the beaches of Palma de Mallorca. Overnight stay in Palma de Mallorca. Day 16: PALMA DE MALLORCA – BARCELONA Transfer by ferry to Barcelona. First we will visit La Barceloneta, a neighborhood by the sea where we visit the Olympic grounds and see FC Barcelona stadium, one of the most famous Spanish soccer clubs. Later we’ll stop to take a glimpse of panoramic views of the city from the Montjuïc hill and visit the fortress at the top. Overnight stay in Barcelona. Day 17: BARCELONA Architectural masterpieces of Antoni Gaudi: the basilica of la Sagrada Familia, Park Güell, Casa Milà, and Casa Batlló. Stroll through the city center, starting on Plaça de Catalunya, a large square that became a meeting spot for all Catalonians. We will walk down Las Ramblas, the most picturesque street of the city. We’ll see the astonishing gothic old quarter called Barri Gòtic, the Cathedral of the Holy Cross and Saint Eulalia, the charming Plaça Reial, and Plaça Sant Jaume with the Town Hall and the Palau de la Generalitat. Our stroll will end by the Columbus Monument at Port Vell. Overnight stay in Barcelona. Day 18: BARCELONA – MONTSERRAT ANDORRA Transfer to Andora. On the way we will make a stop in the Montserrat Benedictine monastery to see the famous Black Virgin of Montserrat and fantastic views of the local landscape. Tour the city of Andorra. Here we will see the capital, Andorra la Vella. We will see the fine 12th-century church and the Casa de la Vall, the ancient seat of government, also visit the 9th century pre-Romanesque form of the Church of Santa Coloma which is Andorra’s oldest. Our walk will end at Plaça del Poble, a large public square which occupies the roof of the Edifici Admin- istratiu Govern d’Andorra, with romantic views of the valley and mountains, popular local gathering place especially in the evening. Overnight in Andora. Day 19: ANDORRA – CARCASSONNE AVIGNON Departure from Andora to Carcassone, touring the well known Cité de Carcassonne, beautiful medieval fortress. Sightseeing. Transfer to Avignon. On the way we stop at Baux-de-Provence which has a spectacular position in the Alpilles mountains, set atop a rocky outcrop that is crowned with the ruins of a castle overlooking the plains to the south. In Avignon we will see: Le Palais des Papes (palace of popes), the world’s largest Gothic edifice, famous bridge Le Pont Saint-Benezet and Place du Palais. Overnight stay in Avignon vicinity. Day 20: AVIGNON MARSEILLE - CANNES - NICE Departure from Avignion to Marseille, biggest Mediterranean port and the economic hub of the ProvenceAlpes-Côte d’Azur region. We’ll see: le Vieux Port (old harbour), Notre Dame de la Garde, the big church which overlooks the city. Transfer to Cannes - stroll in the Old Town with excellent view from the castle ruins at the top, the famous Palais des Festivals, port filled with yachts of the rich and famous and La Croisette Cannes catwalk beside the sea. Overnight stay in Nice. Day 21: NICE MONACO The day for your final exams. Afternoon trip to Monaco second smallest independent state in the world (after the Vatican). Walk through Monaco-Ville, a medieval village with Prince’s Palace and breathtaking panoramic view overlooking the Port and Monte-Carlo.Overnight stay in Nice. Day 22: NICE – TORONTO Transfer to the airport, departure to Toronto. PRICE: 3830* CAD plus 559 CAD tax *200$ discount if you enroll before Nov.15th!
