Mother's Day History
The origin of Mother's Day goes back to the era of ancient Greek and Romans. But the roots of Mother's Day
history can also be traced in the UK where a Mothering Sunday was celebrated much before the festival saw
the light of the day in the US.
However, the celebration of the festival, as it is seen today, is a recent phenomenon that is not even a
hundred years old. Thanks to the hard work of the pioneering women of their times, Julia Ward Howe and
Anna Jarvis, that this day came to exist.
Today Mother’s Day is celebrated in several countries including the US, the UK, India, Denmark, Finland, Italy,
Turkey, Australia, Mexico, Canada, China, Japan and Belgium. People take the day as an opportunity to pay
tribute to their mothers and thank them for all their love and support.
Mother’s Day Trivia
Youngest Mother
The youngest mother whose history is authenticated is Lina Medina, who delivered a 6½-pound boy by
cesarean section in Peru in 1939, at an age of 5 years and 7 months. The child was raised as her brother and
only discovered that Lina was his mother when he was 10.
Oldest Mother
On April 9, 2003, Satyabhama Mahapatra, a 65-year-old woman in India, became the world's oldest mother
when she gave birth to a baby boy. Her and her husband had been married 50 years, but this is their first child.
Most Surviving Children
Bobbie McCaughey is the mother who holds the record for the most surviving children from a single birth. She
gave birth to the first set of surviving septuplets - four boys and three girls on November 19, 1997, at the
University Hospital, in Iowa, US. Conceived by in vitro fertilization, the babies were delivered, after 31 weeks,
by cesarean, within 16 minutes.
Longest Interval Between Two Children
Elizabeth Ann Buttle is the mother who holds the record for the longest interval between the birth of two
children. She gave birth to Belinda on May 19,1956 and Joseph on November 20, 1997. The babies were born
41 years 185 days apart. The mother was 60 years old when her son Joseph was born.
Highest Recorded Number of Children
The highest officially recorded number of children born to one mother is 69, to the first wife of Feodor
Vassilyev (1707-1782) of Shuya, Russia. Between 1725 and 1765, in a total of 27 confinements, she gave birth
to 16 sets of twins, seven sets of triplets, and four sets of quadruplets. 67 of them survived infancy.

Spring
© Martin Taylor
One of four siblings,
the youngest of course.
Or am I the oldest?
Not really sure.
I bring new life
and herald the warmth,
but hay fever, too,
is in my source.
Autumn has colour
but tinged with decay.
Some call her Fall,
I think she's OK.
Not like my brother,
cold in his breath.
Winter’s his name,
in darkness brings death.
Summer's the one
that gets all the glory,
but brush fires and sunburn
are in her story.
So, season of choice,
who will win?
The one with potential,
of course; it's Spring.
