About the Knobbies
The Knobbies are a group of touring motorcycle enthusiasts with
about 200 international members. We meet every Sunday for a
dayride to an unknown destination for lunch, then ride a different
route home. Most rides consist of about 200 to 300 miles, and are
usually confined to backroads. Some of the popular destinations
include state parks, Blue Ridge Parkway, and various locations in
Virginia, Tennessee, and South Carolina.
Started and based as a BMW motorcycle organization, the
Knobbies are supported by the BMW Riders Association and the
BMW Motorcycle Organization of America. You do not have to
ride a BMW to be a member of the Knobbies. We accept all types
of motorcycles, but we prefer responsible riders who enjoy the
touring aspect of motorcycling.
Weekly Sunday Rides
The Knobbies meet around 8:00 AM at Timberwoods Restaurant (I-40
Exit 106, Morganton, NC) for breakfast and a day ride. Group leaves
between 9–9:30 AM. Even if you can’t ride, join us for breakfast and
fellowship! First Sunday of every month is “Picnic Sunday.”

will not have the ability to maintain the newsletter for a while. If
interested, please contact me as soon as possible so that we can
begin a transfer phase. This is not a competition, the newsletter
can be done in any manner, as long as it follows basic format.
Notes from Geno
Wow, what a Rally!
I think our Rally was a hit this year. I was so pleased with our
Knobbies that I could just bust at the seams with pride and want
to thank every Knobbie from the bottom of my heart. I may be
wrong, but during the whole Rally all I saw was smiles, grins,
sun and fun and what riding! Wow. I’m sitting down writing this
Sunday afternoon just after the rally and I’m so “whooped” I’m
not sure these notes will make any sense, but hey, I’m going to try.
I had written an earlier article, and due to several problems in
getting our newsletter out, I decided to rewrite the whole thing,
so bear with me.
First, for all of you Knobbies that volunteered, I want to send a
hearty thank you for not only showing up, but for all the work.
Special thanks I think need to go out to Sharon and John Wilson
(no relation) who stayed and just held down our registration.
Then I’m not going to name all of you ladies and gentlemen who
led groups of riders all over our beautiful area, and if you don’t
believe we live in some beautiful country, ask any of our visitors.
Then thanks to Phil Scarboro for feeding us so very well, and for
the great beer garden supplied by Old Hickory Brewing. I have
had so much positive feedback from our visitors; I swear to you I
just don’t know where to start. Oh, and did all of you know that PO
Wilson had this great chick-magnet named Bailey? Eighty pounds
worth. Attaboy PO.
This year, I decided I would take off riding, one of which was a great
GS ride. We had a couple of problems, of which one involved my
headlight just short of falling off. Thanks to David Burns, we bungee
corded that jewel up and off we went. Oh, and did I mention we had
a chain start to fall off at the same time? Once again, here’s David
lying on the ground, wrapping a piece of wire around a master chain
link to get us back to civilization. John Nichols calls for backup.
Here comes David Lance just a short time later with a master chain
link and met us way up 181. In the meantime our Scottish friend,
Ian, whose chain was falling apart is so astounded how our crew
helped him out that he was in total amazement. Me too to be honest,
although I know our expertise is just unreal. Meanwhile we heard
another Knobbie was running to get someone a new battery! Well,
immediately I knew that was Danny Wilson. Hey, folks, what can I
say? And, we only have at least six new Knobbies from this Rally
and you want to know why? Duh.
How about Morganton’s new shower facilities? I hate to admit it,
but if Morganton keeps adding things, watch out, here comes the
MOA. And I know better than to volunteer us for that one, don’t
I! Then there is the City of Morganton. Tim Knipp was in charge
this year and Tim, what a bang up job. Our Marine Corps breakfast
was only one day shy. We’ll try for 3 days next year, eh? Thanks
Jar Heads. And, I really enjoyed our band this year. Get this, as my
son says, I have several “brain farts” to upgrade our rally to make
us bigger and better than ever. Any ideas are well received.
So, my old notes was about a trip to Sedalia, MO to the
BMWMOA, and I just don’t remember what else unless I got back
to those notes. However I was so excited about how our Rally
went, as I like to say, I just couldn’t help myself except to rewrite
this article. However, I do recall running over the tail feathers of a
Road Runner and having Mike McSwain and Tommy Berry have
a good laugh.
The whole point I’m trying to make here is our group of Knobbies
has to be some of the best motorcyclist in what areas I just can’t
fathom. We are becoming known far and wide as the “can do”
motorcycle club. And get this…it’s still like trying to herd cats!
That’s what makes our club so unique.
Ok, now that I gushed enough, a little business here.
Our Christmas Party is scheduled for December 9th, noon, at the
Elks Lodge in Morganton. There will be a sign up sheet attached
and please respond as we have to pay for anyone who doesn’t
show up or potentially not enough food for those who didn’t sign
up. It should be a lot of fun and a whole lot of fellowship. I look
forward to this, big time. We’re going to have a bar, so all is good.
Now, remember, I am not running for President this year due to so
many other responsibilities, mainly in Raleigh with new grandkids.
Whew. All at once I mean. So be thinking about somebody who
can herd cats and do it well. I’ve certainly tried over the years.
I’ll continue to be Rally Chair and we can continue the tradition
for many years to come. If all stays on track we can increase
attendance by about 20-30% a year up to a certain point, so I hope
we can keep it up. And you know, I hope the new President will
let me write a few Geno’s Notes. Once I get started I enjoy writing
much to my surprise. Maybe I just like showing off?
Secondly, the MOA rally is in Salem, Oregon next year and am I
looking forward to that. If anyone wants to make a trip of a lifetime,
hey Knobbies, load up, and let’s travel. I’m going to explore the
Big Horn Mountains one way or another out there, in addition to
lots of other places. It’s a huge adventure and one that you could
not duplicate in a car, RV or any other means of transportation.
So, once again, thanks to all you Knobbies out there. It’s been such
a privilege and honor to serve as your President that I just cannot
thank all of you enough.
Jeez, I may breakdown after writing this.
