We have commenced this journey, and therefore I urge everyone to read the reports presented by the other members of the Board within our annual report, as each and everyone of them have detailed our accomplishments and the way forward. To say the 2012 – 2013 season has been a taxing season, would be an understatement. I have transgressed from the normal style of report, and have just touched on the highlights of the season and our go forward environment. Our overall surf lifesaving goal has again been achieved, being that we did not have a fatality or drowning between our flags this season on Kings Beach. This is a reflection of the patrol members and their dedication to ensuring our patrols were not only manned properly, but our members had the skills to address the issues that arose. Throughout the season, there were a number of rescues, especially in very large seas and challenging conditions, both on our beach and at the bar. To all members, thank you, and be proud of yourself and what we have achieved collectively. To Nathan, Club Captain, thank you for the efforts put into not only ensuring the patrols are manned, but they have the necessary skills required within a patrol group. To the patrol captain’s, well done and be proud of a successful season. To be able to man and operate the patrols throughout the season, is not an easy task as you would appreciate. The behind the scene processes and the training provided by our people in ensuring all members were proficient and then uplifting their skills, has required enormous dedication and commitment. As soon as you commence naming names, you are sure to always miss out on someone. However our thanks and gratitude must go this year especially to Tamara, our CTO, who has done a fantastic job of taking us through our development this year. To have an increase in the area of 250% of new bronze medallion holders and Silver Medallion IRB drivers, talks heaps of her efforts. To all of the other people noted in Tamara’s report, thank you. The efforts of the Surf Sports group throughout 2013, has again been one we are extremely proud of. As Jeff mentions in his report, the efforts by Rebecca, Stephanie, Corey and Ann, plus a number of other members, has been terrific and congratulations on the successes they have brought to the club in the competition area. Rhett’s work, not only with the competition team, but especially in the nipper training program, has been a ma- jor contributor to the success of the whole surf sports and nipper training programs. To the IRB team who have been training and competing both in and out of season, your efforts and achievements again has brought recognition that our club has the want and capability to be a major force in lifesaving in our Branch. To the Masters group, especially in the ski and boat areas, congratulations. Paul Bounty and his team in Junior Activities, again has seen a successful season, with as per Paul’s report, 172 nippers received their awards this season. Paul mentions in his report, the introduction of the “Nipper New Fam- ily Introduction Document” and the “Nipper Hand Book”. This is a credit to the JAC group, as these capabilities adds to the intellectual skills and capabilities developed and maintained within the Juniors, enabling each year to be a further improvement on previous years. We could not go any further, without acknowledging the efforts put in and shown by our Marketing & Sponsorship Director and Assistant Director, Apryl Cordingley and Carla Dreyer respectively. Apryl had a very successful season as the 2012/2013 Jupiter’s Summer Surf Girl entrant, raising funds for our club, and I urge you to read both Apryl and Carla’s report. Apryl lifted the profile of our club, with her efforts and media highlights, way beyond our past achievements. She has made everyone proud by her efforts within the community. To Carla, we all say a big thank you, for all of your efforts in helping to raise funds for the Club. Carla not only organised and managed the golf day and sports men lunch etc, but has been the driver behind campaigns such as the “One $1 Campaign”, and the latest addition, the “Westpac Referral program”. These campaigns help to raise funds for our club in a passive manner; however without your support and getting behind such campaigns, they will not achieve the results they can for our Club. The Building Sub Committee, lead by Alan Macklin, has performed a tremendous job, culminating in obtaining an approved capital grant for clubhouse renovations of $116,000, of which the club will contribute $23,000. Together with this, the sub-committee has developed plans for the renovation of the Supporters Club, and these were delivered and approved at a special Council meeting, where approval was also provided to apply for funding for approximately $800,000 to complete this project. On top of this, Alan has assisted Craig Spender, Annual Report Season 2012-2013 9 MANAGEMENT // President Deputy President, in a great effort in finally securing a lease from Council for our club, which is being now processed. This has taken many years of effort and frustration and I ask every one of us, to acknowledge the efforts of these people. During the season, we attempted to revise the Surf Club constitution, recognising especially the efforts of Ken O’Connell. After a detailed review of the draft document and input provided by members, the Board of Manage- ment deferred final consideration of the proposed revised Constitution to the 2014 season. Finally, I touch on our financial standing. To Rob Daniec, in the financial and board areas, your efforts in steering our BOM has been solid, direct and much appreciated. This is one of the hardest jobs in the Club, being the purse controller. On the financial side, I ask you to refer to Rob’s report. In summary, the financial results disclose we made a profit of approximately $40,000 before supporter club assistance and depreciation. However in the statement of cash flow, you will see that operationally, we made a “cash loss” of approximately $29,000. This is after ac- counting for capital type income such as grant subsidies and interest received and donations applicable to our Foundation; this totals approximately $32,000, and as these funds cannot be used to meet our operational needs effectively means we went backwards operationally by approximately $61,000 ($29,000 + $32,000). This excess of operational expenditure over income cannot continue, and provides a picture why internally, this season we had to borrow from our Foundation account, to an amount of $50,000. The ongoing picture must also take cognisance that over the next couple of years, whilst the Supporters Club re-establishes its financial position, excess funds may not be available to the Surf Club from the Supporters Club. The overall operational position cannot continue, and requires not only attention to our costs across all areas, but also to the income we can generate ourselves. We have to learn to budget and live within our means. This style of discussion has caused some degree of concern and disagreement of direction within our Board during the year. This I make no apology about, as if we don’t quickly apply a focused management process to address this issue, we will not be the Club we can be. In closing, I take this opportunity to thank each and every one of our Board members for their efforts and contribution throughout the season. We at times have had robust discussions, but it was extremely evident that in all of these discussions, each member had the Club in mind. To the administration team, especially Kay and Margot, thank you for all of your support and efforts throughout the season. It would be remiss of me, not to acknowledge the support and guidance provided by the Sunshine Coast Branch, over the season, to Tamara and her team, Nathan as Club Captain, Apryl as Surf Girl, as well as to our administration group. Further, to the Branch and Surf Life Saving Queensland, I again thank you for your assistance together with Mooloolaba Surf Lifesaving Club, in making possible the donation of a 4WD vehicle. This is an item we cannot afford, but do require to fulfil our agreement with the Council in attending to the Shelly Beach and Happy Valley as secondary patrol areas. This, together with your assistance in helping us obtain another grant, is gratefully appreciated. As the season progressed, I came to understand the importance and how critical each dollar this club raises or receives is to a volunteer club. The contributions we receive from our sponsors, the successful grants and the value of a very proactive Surf Girl and our Sponsorship and Marketing Assistant Manager. The efforts of all those that have volunteered their time to collect, run raffles, helped with BBQ’s or sold chocolates. All of this has made a huge contribution in supporting this club and its operations. The club operational costs have grown and although we have had a great year in generating income, I have been very conscious of what has been coming in and what has been going out. Looking at where we started at the beginning of the season and to where we are now. It is important that we all need to understand how this club is currently performing financially. Due to either sponsorship support dropping off, collections not as strong as previous years, grants that are for capital expenditure only. The income generated has not met the club’s expenditure. During the season this was brought to BOM attention and although discussed, proposals made, ideas bounced around and a strategy as to how we can improve our income was addressed. This will not happen overnight. For the 2013-2014 BOM this has to be their key focus and as members of this club we need to support the actions they take or introduce. The club going forward does not want to struggle to make it from year to year. It needs to create wealth and to embed itself as a great club. But to do this, the club will need to make a number of difficult decisions, take a couple of steps back thus allowing it to begin the journey forward. Annual Report Season 2012-2013 13 MANAGEMENT // Sponsorship and Marketing Well what a busy and exciting year for Marketing and Sponsorship for the surf club! This season has seen major Fundraising events, the welcome of our 2012/2013 Jupiter's Summer Surf Girl Apryl Cordingley and the signing up of new sponsors and event sponsors for the year. Firstly the club would like to thank our past and present sponsors, without their support we would not be able to offer the invaluable lifesaving services our club provides at Kings Beach, keeping our community and visitors safer while enjoying our beautiful beach. I cannot begin to thank Carla enough for her efforts over this season. Whilst I was dedicated to my Surf Girl commitments Carla really took hold of the Marketing and Sponsorship role and is responsible for securing all of our major sponsors this year, the driving force and primary organiser of all of our major fundraising events and the brains behind our marketing prospectus and advertising. The dedication and time she has put into our club is invaluable and without Carla none of these results would have been achieved. Thank you Carla for all of your hard work and commitment to seeing Metropolitan Caloundra SLSC prosper. A special thank you to our Clubs Major Sponsor Investa for their continued support over the year we are grateful for their kind financial contributions during their time associated with our club. I am amazed at the generosity of some businesses on the Sunshine Coast/Brisbane areas and their willingness to support our club. To our long time sponsors Control Logic, Dwyer’s Family Living and Henzells Agency for their continued financial sup- port and donations to the club; we thank you. We would like to welcome our new club sponsors this year, Hot 91.1, Sunshine Coast Daily, Jetts Caloundra; Westpac Caloundra and Pelican Waters Family Doctors. We hope to secure these businesses for many more years to come. All of you have seen Snow Maurice in the supporters club selling raffles week after week, his dedication and enthusiasm to this has huge contribution to our fundraising. Thank you Snow! To the members that have contributed their time to fundraising your support really is appreciated, thank you. This season we have also seen the development of the $1 Campaign, our Clubs Marketing Prospectus and new club website all initiatives designed to raise funds for the club, promoting donations and ongoing income streams for the club. Thank you to the many companies who donated vital surf lifesaving equipment for use on our beach your kind generosity is appreciated. Our dedicated Surf Girl Apryl Cordingley spent many hours committed to our club, surf awareness and fundraising. What a busy and productive year Apryl has had; a fantastic ambassador for our club. We have had an exceptional amount of positive media reports this year branding our name and services that we offer on the beach with the use of our two media sponsors Hot 91.1 and Sunshine Coast Daily. We have had multiple articles and announcements made through media and this certainly has helped us market our non for profit organisation getting our name and cause out to the wider community. Apryl Cordingley Director of Marketing & Sponsorship Carla Dreyer Assistant Director of Marketing & Sponsorship Annual Report Season 2012-2013 15 LIFESAVING // Report What a year it has been patrolling at Met Cal. We’ve had a season full of both wonderful and not so wonder- ful days on patrol, including another summer of natural disasters to deal with, which everyone took head on to keep our beaches safe. I’m happy to say we’ve achieved no loss of life in the water at Kings Beach again this year. Firstly I would like to thank all of the members of Metropolitan Caloundra SLSC for their hard work and dedication throughout the 2012-2013 season. I’m proud to say we patrolled for a total of 8773 hours, completing an extra 350 hours more than the 2011-2012 patrolling season. All of our patrolling members should be proud of this great achievement. During yet another summer of natural disasters, Kings Beach was one of the luckiest beaches on the coast, fairing very well during these severe weather events. We were lucky enough to have little to no erosion and were able to keep full beach access, compared to some of the other clubs throughout the coast who, unfortunately, had metres of sand taken from their beaches. During this time our lifesavers showed their continued commitment to turn up and watch a beach, or should I say, watch the rain hitting the windows. The days when the beach was visible behind the rain, the water didn’t look safe or inviting enough to go for a swim. Of course we had our fair share of people who decided to go against our advice and make their way to the water, including a guy who decided it was the perfect time to learn how to surf. At the start of February, 3 of our members made the trip to Bundaberg to assist with the flood recovery and clean up. We provided some relief to the Wide Bay community who had been working nonstop since the flooding first occurred. We all heard our share of amazing and also heartbreaking stories, but everyone who attended from the Sunshine Coast Branch agreed was one of the most rewarding and life changing experiences. I would like to thank Tegan Cronau and Norman Bergin who along with myself made the trip north. with me. Also, thank you to the Club for allowing us to use the 4wd which greatly assisted us to help those effected. We also had a lot of success in our fundraising opportunities to assist with our lifesaving operations for the season. This has enabled us to purchase some new equipment including an IRB, IRB road trailer, various items of patrol equipment and much needed rescue boards. We were also lucky enough through the assistance of SLSQ and Mooloolaba SLSC to be provided with a Lifesaving Vehicle, something we are very much appreciative and grateful of. I would like to thank each and every one of our sponsors and supporters who have donated to the club during the year. Without your support our club would not be able to maintain our services here on Kings Beach. To all the members and personnel throughout the club I would like to thank you for your continuous support throughout the season, a season which has been another massive learning curve for myself. To think that just over 3 years ago I had never patrolled a beach before, it’s hard to believe I am now responsible for managing 11 patrol teams, as well as being responsible for keeping Kings Beach safe. I could not have achieved this without the support of everyone who assisted and supported me throughout this time. To all the patrolling members, trainers, assessors and supporters I thank you for your dedication, time and service to Metropolitan Caloundra throughout the season, something which everyone else appreciates immensely as well. Thank you all for a great season. I will look forward to seeing each and everyone of you on the beach again very soon. This season has been a great year for Met Cal with award attainments. We have seen a 250% increase on Bronze Medallion attainments and almost the same in Silver Medallion IRB Drivers. A large number of awards were achieved this year and particularly pleasing were the efforts to rebuild the capability of the IRB area of the Club. A special thank you to our team of IRB trainers who give up so much time to train new IRB crew and drivers Daniel Creedy, James Creedy and John Keller. With the creation of the Tractor Induction Course Met Cal needed a trainer in this area; thank you to John Keller and Alan Macklin who were quick to step up and volunteer to train this course. The dynamic duo trained 28 members in their Tractor Induction course this season. I must express my thanks on behalf of Met Cal to Ross Johnstone from Dicky Beach Surf Club for his important role overseeing these two Tractor Induction Trainers. Met Cal was also able to have 9 members attain their Silver Medallion in Basic Beach Management (PC) – this takes the pressure of our current PC’s hugely. This is still an area that can be assisted with more members attain- ing this award. Don’t think because your patrol already has a PC that you don’t need another. Trust me your PC will be very welcoming of any patrol members who would like to offer them the huge assistance of sharing the PC knowledge/responsibility. The breakdown of awards achieved this season is as follows: Bronze Medallion 28 Surf Rescue Certificate 19 Silver Medallion Basic Beach Management 9 Silver Medallion IRB Driver 3 Advanced Resuscitation Techniques Certificate (ARTC) 32 Apply (Senior) First Aid 11 ATV Inductions 1 QLD Observers 9 Training Officer Tractor Induction 2 QLD Tractor Induction 28 Radio Operators Certificate 28 IRB Crew Certificate 11 Spinal Management 15 Training Officer Bronze Medallion 3 Assessor Bronze Medallion 1 This season Met Cal ran four Bronze Medallion & SRC Courses. Trainers involved in these courses include: Snow Maurice, Elizabeth Dawes, Tracey Webster, Jan Burdekin, Kirsten Phillips, Simon Richards, Matthew Richards, Alan Macklin & Bruce Edwards. These trainers also played a key role in mentoring two new trainers: Tamara Sheppard and Paula Christiansen who have both donated a lot of time to training this season. Met Cal Surf Club warmly introduces these new trainers to the education team. I would like to make special welcome to Sara McLeod a trainer who has transferred to Met Cal from Port Douglas, I look forward to Sara being involved in next seasons training and encourage all members to make Sara feel welcome. In addition we have two Met Cal members who are half way through gaining their training officer certificate. Whilst the Bronze and ARC are our bigger courses, we also have our shorter important courses such as Apply First Aid, Spinal Management, ART, Radio Operators Course – just to mention some. These upskill courses were generally run by Liz Dawes with assistance from other trainers. Liz always makes a huge effort in training and her passion for education in lifesaving ensures Met Cal members are trained in the highest standard. Actually this year some of our probationary trainers had an opportunity to complete probationary hours at Dicky Beach Surf Annual Report Season 2012-2013 24 LIFESAVING // Training & Assessment Club. And the feedback from Dicky Trainers was “if they are an indication of the quality of your Trainers, then all bodes well for the future of your training activities”. As always Des Dwyer was more than happy to come along on award presentation day with a big smile on his face to present the new awards. Thank you Des. Such a great example of what being a Life Member encompasses and a wonderful inspiration to our award participants. This season an effort was made to improve the numbers of assessors present at proficiency’s by consulting all assessors on proficiency dates. The outcome saw attendance of assessors to proficiency improve meaning members were put through quicker and work load lightened for other assessors. This was only assisted by the return of Matthew and Simon Richards to our assessing group. In addition Met Cal welcomed a new assessor Brendan Sheppard, whom completed his probationary assessing this season. Met Cal has had a huge achievement this season but as always there are still areas that can be improved and members are asked to contact CTO or Club Captain if you are interested in upskilling in any award. To stay strong as a club it is essential that our members continue to increase their skills to ensure strong patrols. Once again SRC/Bronze camps were held for the Nippers wishing to gain either of these awards. This year we held two. I have already thanked the trainers above but would like to also acknowledge the effort put in my Christine Bates and Jackie Fyten in making it possible to hold these camps. A big thank you to Nathan Steer our Club Captain, I really can’t say enough about the time and effort he puts into Met Cal Surf Club and Life Saving in general. My thanks to Courtney Elsmore at branch who had the difficult task of assisting me as new Chief Training Officer. Talk about thrown in the deep end. The amount I had to learn initially seemed extremely daunting. The amount of paperwork I had to learn threatened to drown me. Courtney very kindly and patiently mentored me through this process, it was greatly appreciated. All in all there has been a lot of hours put in by trainers, assessors and facilitators. The improvement we have had in numbers of members trained would not have been possible without the hard work and the experience of the education team that I am very happy to be a part of. See you all at Kings Beach next season. “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.” Margaret Meade. club the annual report for Mets Juniors for the 2012 – 2013 season. We had 216 nippers join this year, which does represent a significant reduction from last year, and continues a trend over the last few years. We understand this is not an isolated problem at Mets but is occurring at most clubs in SLSQ. As you all know our nipper program doesn’t just happen but is the result of lots of work from many people. This year’s JAC saw some new faces and some of the old faces taking on new roles. Most pleasing was that nearly all committee positions were filled at the AGM which provided an excellent spring board for our organising of the upcoming season. This allowed for some new initiatives such as the “Nipper New Family Introduction Document” and the “Nipper Hand book”. Very big thanks to Phil Ashworth for producing these valuable resources. The be- ginning of the season is a busy time, especially for our registrar, so thank you to Amanda Woods. This is Amanda’s second year doing this demanding job. Amanda is also one of our age managers. One of the biggest challenges of any nipper season is the yearly proficiencies. This year with some good planning and extra help, things actually ran fairly smoothly. Once again our Education Officer Jackie Harle, was the driving force here, but thanks also to our assessment team of Tamara Skok, Alan Macklin and Matt Richards. Nippers can be generally broken down into two areas. Our Sunday program, which is designed to give the kids insight into all facets of surf lifesaving and ultimately gain their age awards as a formal recognition of their training. This year we had 172 of the nippers receive their awards including 12 new SRC graduates from our under 14’s. When this is added to the 5 new bronze medallion recipients from the nipper parents, it amounts to the most significant area of growth to the clubs patrol roster. We were also very pleased to see 3 of our parents go further, Tammy Sheppard and Paula Christiansen gaining their trainers’ qualification and Brendan Sheppard becoming and assessor. Congratulations to all the award recip- ients. This year’s Sunday program was a bit of a mixed bag, with the weather being mostly excellent up to Christmas but quite appalling after, which resulted in, the loss of our U11-14 branch team’s carnival and the cancellation of our second points day. On a far more positive note the nipper canteen was again a huge success, both in keeping the masses sated and in providing much needed income for our club. We say it each year but I feel it has to be said again that our crew of Jo McDonald, Nova and Barry Thomas, Gary Jones (AKA Jonesey), Dean Hume (Dean also donates all the meat for the weekly meat tray) and of course Barry Weatherall do an amazing job. So from all the nippers and parents, thank you. Another area of significant contribution is our water safety crews. Simply put no water safety no nippers, so thank you to all who done the fashionable orange rashie and cap to keep the kids safe. A special mention to Shep, Fizzo and Murph for manning the duck and occasionally even getting wet. If you turn up on Sunday at 8 am you see the beach all set up and ready to go for the kids. This of course is done by groups of parents on a roster basis. This year was very pleasing to see so many hands making light work, so thank you to, the age managers for organising your rosters, the parents for coming in and helping and lastly but by no means least Glen Christiansen and Chris Hudson for being there weekly to co-ordinate. New initiatives this year included Jacki Harle getting Rhett to run some basic instruction sessions for our age managers to improve the quality and consistency of our Sunday program, especially in boards. This was well received by all and will continue next year. Other changes included doing our own in house age group photos. Thanks to Mark Singleton and his great big lens, the pics were great. Our Junior Surf Sports Program, involving training and completion at club, branch and state levels. This was again run by our clubs head coach Rhett Collie, with help from Jeff Morris, who once again put in many hours with our kids. Rhett’s been at the club for some time now and we almost take him for granted, so I’d like to point out that Mets is only one of 4 Coast clubs to have a full time professional coach and for us to have one of the calibre of Rhett is something to be proud of and used to help encourage new members to our ranks. Annual Report Season 2012-2013 32 JUNIOR ACTIVITIES // Report While our overall nipper numbers were down, attendance at the 2 midweek and Saturday trainings was up. The effort put in by our kids showed in their carnival results which continue to improve year to year. The best indicator of this is our team’s performance at the state titles. This year we came 14 th out of 45 clubs, (last year 15th the year before 39th), we received 5 medals, 2 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze. Full results can be found on the results page of the annual report. As with all aspects of nippers, getting our competitors to the start line at carnivals takes a lot of effort, so a big thank you to all our parents who put their hand up to be officials, water safety, set up and pack up crews, age manager and especially our team managers. This year Cheryl de Malmanche passed on the baton with all her years of experience to Phil Ashworth to look after the under 8- 10s. We would like to acknowledge Cheryl’s huge contribution over the years and thank her sincerely for all she’s done for Mets. In the under 11- 14s, Michelle Bounty, continued the role she’s done for the past 3 years. To Michelle and Phil, thank you for jobs very well done. Michelle is standing down from team manager next year but with Merv Tottman, Kerry-Ann Barlow and Phil Ashworth are looking at gaining their level 1 coaching accreditation and be involved with our plans for beach and board coaching next season. Nipper camp was again a huge success. This annual event is an integral part of Rhett’s junior surf sport program. As with everything, running the camp requires lots of help, so thank you to Rhett and Jeff for coaching, all the water safety, the parents for many jobs including those brave souls who do the overnight den parent gig, and most importantly, Jenny Singleton and Jackie Harle for handling the catering to keep the voracious attendees fuelled. This year also saw the club looking at updating our uniforms and swimwear. In the nippers 2 ladies, Julie’s Heli- on and Hudson, took on this rather difficult task, and the result for us was the trial of the Fashion Fish swimmers. Most of the feedback was positive on how good the kids looked and that feedback, along with comment on durability and fit, has been passed on to the clubs uniform committee, so a decision on next year’s gear can be made. The girls were also responsible for this year’s state uniform and again they did a great job with the team looking awesome. Thanks girls for taking on such a tough role. Our season ending Junior Awards Presentation and break up party was held this year at the junior club area on Kings. The theme was Hawaiian party. We couldn’t have asked for a better day, the weather was brilliant;; the decorations (thanks Julie) and the food and goodies bags (thanks Barry, Barry, Jo and Nova) were great. It was pleasing to see representatives from, Sunshine Coast Branch (Tanya Duncan), senior club and board of management (Craig Spender, Alan Macklin, Apryl Cordingley) come along to help with the presentations. Full detail of Award recipients can be found in the annual report. I’d like to again congratulate our graduating U14s, and wish you all the best for your futures in surf lifesaving. The most pleasing aspect of the day for me was seeing the kids having a great time enjoying the friendships they have formed over the season. It was a fitting way to cap off a very positive year for Mets Juniors. We hope to see you all back next season. Paul Bounty Director of Junior Activities Annual Report Season 2012-2013 33 Annual Report Season 2012-2013 34 Annual Report Season 2012-2013 35 SURF SPORTS // Report It’s difficult to define what equates to a successful year in the surf sports arena. If you look solely at carnival re- sults, you might say that for the amount of work that was put in the results were inconsistent across our range of athletes and I know some were disappointed there didn’t achieve their desired goals. Having said that, I would still like to congratulate everyone who trained and competed for the red, white and blue and commend their effort. Some of our better results were from Rebecca Creedy, Stephanie Cronin and Ann Glen 3 rd& 4th at State in the ski relay and taplin respectively and 4th at Aussies in the ski relay, Corey Jones 2nd in State ironman, Rebecca 4th in State iron woman and 2nd at Aussies. Also Cameron Smith 4th at State in u19 ski. Just to qualify for the Nutri-Grain Series puts you in the top 15 Ironmen/Ironwoman in Australia and although Bec & Corey were disappointed with their overall results just to compete at that standard and indeed just finishing some of the races was a credit to their talent and Rhett’s coaching. But carnival results aren’t the only measure of a successful surf sports team. Our nipper program is the envy of many other clubs and a great number of nipper parents have expressed their appreciation of Rhett’s work in this area and in fact have stated that if it wasn’t for his program they would not be members of our club. I personally would like to thank these parents for the work they put into fundraising, officiating and patrolling for the club. It’s fantastic to see the increase in quantity and quality of our junior competitors. The fact that every team that competed at the Junior State Titles made it to the finals is another fantastic result and rewards the effort these people put into training. We are consistently getting an increase in attendance to our midweek training sessions and the nipper camp was once again a sell out and testimony of our nipper program. Another area of success and possibly the most important, is the number of new patrolling members we have coming through, from the nipper program, into the senior club. These people are not only showing they are committed club members but offer a skill level on patrol that puts many of our senior patrol members to shame. The surf sports team has also been successful in the area of fundraising. Apart from the fantastic work that the nipper community contribute through the canteen and other fundraising activities, the nipper camp was once again very successful and the sportsman’s luncheon was a major fundraiser. I would like to extend my apprecia- tion to everyone who contributed to its success, I hope we will be a position to run the event again this coming season and provide the same quality of quest speakers from within the clubs ranks. On closing, I would like to thank everyone who contributed to the success of our surf sports team, all the athletes for the time and effort they put in over and above their regular club duties, the parents for getting our athletes to and from training, the coaches, the officials, water safety and the support I received from other board of surf sports members. I sincerely hope that with some positive support from the new board of management we will have another successful season in 2013/2014. Jeff Morris Director of Surf Sports Annual Report Season 2012-2013 36 SURF SPORTS // Surf Boat Report Hey Boaties, Season 2012-13 for Met Caloundra was very quiet compared to what’s been happening of late. With only 3 crews wearing the blue, white & red cap there was plenty of room under the tent, which was a good thing as it rained at more carnivals than not. Noosa wasn’t the first carnival but it was the first that Mets was represented at with 2 reserve grade crews, the ‘Otters’ and the ‘Corvettes’. Conditions were great apart from the 100mm of rain that fell within 2 hours. For the Corvettes, it was their first carnival ever. The boys, Ryan Gilbert, Ben Kelly, Justin Ingram & Kenny Greenway surprised themselves by missing the final on a count back. The Otters full of experience, Ben Canniffe, Michael Boulton, Michael O’Kelly & Adam Hammersley also surprised themselves by winning the final after only 3 training sessions. Most carnivals after that were a write off due to a summer of terrible weather, the Bribie Island round of the QLD cup was rained out and Tallebudgera was also cancelled. State Titles at Maroochydore were on again off again with very little sand and lots of coffee rock. In the weeks leading up to State I was asked if Mets would be able to hold the boat section to which of cause I said YES, but that was not to be. State results weren’t the best for all, but promising for some. The ‘Baby Humpbacks’ Peter Layden, Cliff Wirz, Skinny & Dan Dwyer in the 180 masters failed to make the final in a tough cut. The ‘Otters’ were cut in a stiff quarter final & the ‘Corvettes’ (renamed Benny’s Beard just for state) finished 4th in the semi’s just missing the final. Next stop everyone’s favourite the Aussies at North Kirra. Mother nature as always turned it on for the masters (just to make the story’s in the pub sound better). The ‘Baby Humpbacks’ battled in the largest age division in what was pretty big surf (big enough that the egg and spooners raced in the gutter, not going past the back bank) and unfortunately were out towards the end of the day just missing the semi-finals. The Otters, some would say, had it a bit easier with a straight out final in the 140 division. For the second year in a row Michael O’Kelly has won an Australian medal, this year a silver to add to his bronze from last season. Unfortunately the open carnival for Mets was over and done with pretty quick, both the ‘Otters’ and ‘Corvettes’ going out in rounds 3 and 2 respectively. On the positive side both crews were committed to going to Perth before they left the beach. Big thanks to our sweeps Mick Bacon, Sean McMahon, Molly and our team manager Uncle Pete. 2013-14 already promises to be bigger and better with 3 crews already in training and another few waiting to be finalised. 2014 is also George Bass year. In 2010 I took 3 girls to NSW to contest the toughest open water boat race in the world, with the help of the Canberra Vikings we had a win. This time we’re looking for a 7 leg outright win as our own club. Boaties do it backwards MCBC Molly Annual Report Season 2012-2013 37 SURF SPORTS // IRB Racing Report IRB Competition Report As the team decided not to attend the Australian IRB Championships in Darwin in late July, the State Championships at Mermaid Beach in the last weekend of June was our final carnival for the season. If we had to sum up the season, our results at States were a good indicator. Dan and James Creedy led the way by collecting 2 silver medals in Masters Surf Rescue and Tube Rescue. They also combined with Lance Hipkin and Carl Perkins to win bronze in the Open Male Teams Rescue. There were a few more teams in finals, but luck did not go our way in a few of the races. If only we raced in the finals like we did in the semis! We also had a number of lead up carnivals throughout South East Queensland over a 2 month period, where we were able to hone our skills and prepare our equipment for racing. We had a number of new members join the team this year, plus an old timer making a comeback for the last 2 carnivals. Combined with our continuing members, there was a good camaraderie when touring together. Many thanks to Dan Creedy for being available as IRB coach throughout the season. John Keller and Rob Daniec now have their IRB coaching qualifications which will enable us to provide a wider variety of training sessions. Thanks to Peter Hoogvliet and Simon Richards for taking on roles of Team Manager, Kirsten Phillips for coordinating accommodation and Carl Perkins as Head of Logistics (towing the gear to and from every carnival). Also thanks to the Club for allowing our members to compete. I think an IRB competition team is vital in getting more members to obtain their IRB awards (who are then available for patrol, water safety etc), increasing their skills and also keeping members involved in something apart from patrols. We are always looking at increasing our competitor numbers, so if you are interested have a chat to one of the team or keep an eye on newsletters and website for training next year. Apart from driving and crewing, we are always on the look out for more patients. For clarification, drivers and crew need their respective award for 6 months prior to competing and patients need the IRB crew award for 3 months prior to competing. So if you are interested next year, probably a good idea to attend a driver or crew course in the first part of the season. She put in a great deal of effort not only in fundraising but raising the profile of our club in the community, generating print and television media interest as well as promoting surf safety in a variety of forums. Through her efforts, attitude and manner in which she has conducted herself, Apryl has gained a positive reputation for herself and Metropolitan Caloundra SLSC not only in the Caloundra Community but in the broader Surf Life Saving Community and will continue to be involved at a club, state and national level. To all our wonderful major event sponsors, special guests and event organisers thank you all for your kind donations and support. Your sponsorship helped see our Golf day held at Pelican Waters and the Inaugural Sportsman’s Lunch held at the Supporters Club a massive success. A special thank you to Kerry Barlow for her help at our two major fundraising events this year and the many other helpers at each event. These events gave our members and the community the opportunity to come together for a fun day of networking and fundraising seeing successful events with the ultimate aim of raising much needed funds for our surf lifesaving club. Without your support we would not have achieved these significant fundraising amounts. A big thankyou to the following for their support during the 2012 –2013 Surf Girl Campaign. Carla has been a driving force behind our clubs major fundraisers this season and I really don’t know how I would have gotten through the year without her! Snow Maurice is always there when I need him and of course is our Raffle champion at the club every weekend. Peter Phillips was there to lend a hand wherever he could at most of my events. All of our admin team, Nathan Steer and Mike McDonald who have shown me a great deal of encouragement and support, thank you. There are a handful of other people who did their little bit to assist over the year, you know who you are and again, thank you! I recommend that any young women at our club consider participating in this program as it is an invaluable experience where I have made friends for life, learned so much more about myself, our club, the Surf Life Saving Movement and what it really takes to keep us on the beach.
