What’s up? The stratosphere you say?
Well you are correct. I’m not sure what the meteorological
reason is for this cloud blanket over the Nullakai, but it
looks pretty cool. It might be what the Nullakai looked like
when Gondwana land was down near Antarctica. It might
be what the Nullakai will look like in a couple more months
when we are in the heart of Winter.
But it is not 20 million years ago, nor is it Winter. It is Autumn of 2013. And it is good to be alive. Unlike those poor
Dinosaurs.
As we settle into the seasons without surf club, feel free to
share your exploits to warmer climates with your fellow
club members. Phil and George have gone to Melbourne
(warm with 1000 beers under your belt) to watch some
football. I look forward to hearing stories from those stud
muffins.

DSLSC Newsletter Editor and Table Tennis Legend
"The sun and the moon love me because the sun follows me
where ever I go and the moon jumps when I jump."
Natasha Ryan, 4 Years old
Sunny weather, warm water, perfect winds, dolphins not sharks, and the aroma of bacon and egg
burgers– swimmers could not have asked for much more for DSLSC’s Easter Southern Ocean
Classic Mile. It made for quite a spectacle for all beach users. The conditions made for a speedy
race with three time winner Paul Laver coming out first with first female, Sacha Downing not far
behind.
At the end of the day, DSLSC had made a profit of $5000, marking a successful day for one of the
biggest events in the club calendar. As with anything that happens at DSLSC, our boss men and
volunteers need a huge thankyou for ensuring the smooth running of the day. The big three for
this one were Phil, Sue and George. Philip loves this event more than his daughters, and he is the
catalyst behind the whole event. Sue Dybing had the unenvious job of running the admin and lost
sleep as a result. George’s spiritual leadership just makes stuff happen.
The next rung of workers were Colin and Alannah Ross (cooking on the bbq’s all morning), Nicki
Cogan, Brett Montgomery and Julie Marsh for feeding the hungry crowds. Happy Heidi and the
Rego girls. Pmac on the microphone. Pete Campbell who co-ordinated the water safety from the
ski, Martin and Rabbit in the IRB, and a horde of six on the boards.

The season wind up is always great fun. It is a great way to recap the season, celebrate some heroes, eat some food and have a cheeky beverage. See everyone there.
Well the community pool referendum was run and the result
was a negative. A full report is in the latest Bulletin. From my
goldfish memory, it was roughly 1500 no’s, 1000 yes’s and
1400 clowns didn’t return their ballot.
On a semi unrelated side note– how good was the Sydney
2000 4x100m Men’s relay gold medal swim? Thorpey will always be a hero after that final leg.
* Keeping in mind he is coming last in his house tipping
comp with three other girls, one of which has only watched
one game in her life
After a massive drug enquiry in 2012 Essendon are now sitting at 4-0. Suspicious? I think so. Jobe Watson looks like he is part horse. If the ASADA banish
all players implicated, my Mum might get a call up to play forward pocket.
I reckon Port would take take 2nd spot at the end of the season. Don’t see
them up there very often. Must be the influence of draftee Kane Mitchell.
The perennial contenders– Geelong look set to be there abouts once again.
Mathew Stokes looks like he has filled up on sherbert bombs, and if Tom Hawkins learns to catch I can see them in the GF once again.
7% of the AFL is indigenous, compared to roughly 2.5% of the total Australian population. Hawthorn seem to roughly 50% indigenous which makes for a
whole lot of X factor. Much better viewing than the TV show. My tip for GF.
I don’t know how Sydney manage to recycle supposed hacks into premiership
players. Ted Richards, Rhyce Shaw, Mattner, Mitch Morton.........It will be a great
day if Matt Spangher can win a premiership medal. Not in a world as I know it.
Richmond has promised success for so long. If they had 22 Brett Deledio’s
they would romp it in. But they have too many cry babies (Jack Riewoldt).
Hopefully they learnt some training habits from Cuz before he left.
It is a good feeling seeing Collingwood sitting in 7th on the ladder. They won’t
stay there for long. Especially when they give the team a week off when they
play GWS and just send Pendlebury out to beat them. Top 4 at seasons end.
Scott Thompson will break an AFL record this year when he runs out to
play with his grandson. How old is he now? He just keeps getting better.
Add a bloke with the last name Dangerfield and a city with nothing better
to do than play football and you have a recipe for success.
What can we expect from the shockers this year? I reckon Ross Lyon will
have everyone on the same page going into his second year. It is a shame
that Ballantyne can’t read, but that will provide some unpredictability.
Jared Rivers got de-listed from Melbourne and got picked up by Geelong. Reckon he is enjoying
his football this year? It is still early days in 2013, but the teams in the bottom 9 that you would
expect to play finals are West Coast, Carlton and the Saints. Teams to come out of the top 9 would
then be Port Adelaide, Dockers and maybe Sydney. We pray that the Eagles can turn around a bad
start to the year or else Philips life, Nicki’s life, and the Thornton’s Hardware climate will not be
Positive.
The last two weekends of the season had some big swells and bad
winds. As a result the junior and senior club champs were not run. It
is a shame that they were not run and won, but provided a lesson to
the kiddies that we act out of safety at surf club.
In what seems to be becoming a regular
fixture in the newsletter, this months
‘whoops’ is regarding last months listed
trophy winners. It was in fact Sam Marsh
who won the beach run, not Sam Williamson. Why can’t we have more unique
names amongst the kiddies so these mistakes don’t happen? That is the Steiner
Schools philosophy.
Kieren Dybing is not studying engineering either. But he did kill his exams.
The Heritage Bridge is going to be closed for 4-6 weeks. I’m not sure
which 4-6 weeks, but if you go for your daily run and can’t get over the
bridge– the time starts then.
I know one person this will affect, and I fear he will use it as an excuse not
The weekend of the 4th and 5th of May is the
State Longboard Series round 2 in our hometown.
DSLSC always hosts the event when it is at
Ocean Beach and the officials love us for that.
We have a few home grown contenders competing for a spot in the state side to go to Nationals in August. Michaela, Pmac and Asha
need a result after missing the first event.
Come down with a banner saying “Michaela is
my hero!”
If it is held at the point we would love a few
volunteers to make a few burgers etc. Contact
George if you can help...

Young Ruby Marshall lost her wetty off the railing over the Easter weekend.
It is a black 2mm West wetsuit that fits a small
year 7 girl.
If you know of its whereabouts please contact
Cressida on 9848 1202
If you know where any of Pmac’s wettys, sunglasses and keys are from the last 5 years, please
call 0468941308
Now that the SOCM weekend is over, Phil
can relax a little on the grass upkeep.
He is currently in Melbourne doing research
on how the MCG keeps its grass looking so
nice.
The predicted righthand gutter from last
months newsletter showed its form over the
Easter weekend. It was seriously fun, bowly
and blue. It disintegrated recently but this
weekend swell looks to be re-grooming it. Not
much going on at the point bank wise.
At least the heavens are doing most of the
watering now, so it will just be a case of
keeping up the mowing.
Consistent westerleys– bad for the bulk of the population on the west coast, good for us at Ocean Beach.
Add some north in there and thinks look up.
