Campbell Bronze Patrol M. Pizzi Education Director Pippa Skinner delivered a great Bronze Camp with another 90 new members hitting the beach. Red Alert, the name given to our annual visit to the Anglesea Surf Lifesaving Carnival and the Bronze Patrol Day in early January both encouraged many more Bronzies to get involved around the club and should assist future member retention. The Cadet camp continued as a week-long nonresidential program following last season’s successful trial of this format. This new format takes a lot of the pressure off our senior club members in early January, and also allows the Cadets to enjoy their summer with friends. The competition team had another great campaign at the Australian Championships. Georgia Barry, Kelly McDonnell, Teisha & Amber King winning Gold in the U/19 Beach Relay, Dave Rowell winning Silver in the 2km Run and Luke Anthony for his Bronze in the U/19 Beach Sprint. The Nipper Program continues to grow under the stewardship of Charlie Schall, Kerri Hart, Sue Trayner, Paul Hunter and James Paynter. The success of this program is integral to our future and we are safe in the knowledge that over 300 future lifesavers gained valuable surf lifesaving skills this year. The increased participation at Nipper carnivals is giving a broader range of activities for our members to be involved in. The Nipper Program managers are working toward an even bigger program for the year ahead. Disappointingly the Nippers had to be moved from their home of many decades at the Portsea Front beach to Sorrento due to mass sand erosion at Portsea. We can only hope the issue is dealt with soon so they can return to their home. The transition of management of the Portsea Swim Classic to Tom McInerney and Will Ireland is now complete and the swim was a great success. As our largest event it continues to provide much need funds and also show off the capabilities of our hard working club members. Former race director, Stuart Rayner, was on hand to assist Tom and Will in the lead-up which was great appreciated by them and the rest of the Swim Classic team. The Pier to Perignon continues to be a very popular event with seasoned open water swimmers and this year the event sold out in only three weeks. Another great day from event Director Charlie Perkins and his team as they delivered an event that is the highlight of the Victoria open water swimming calendar. Thank you to Ted Baillieu and Robert Robertson for their ongoing support Our communications to members with the professionally published Boomer and the fortnightly e-Boomer has kept our members well and truly up to date. Over the past three seasons this has had a major impact on member information and connection with the club. I would like to thank Jo Lynch for her continued work as Boomer Editor. RecLink is a volunteer organisation whose mission is to provide sport and arts programs to enhance the This is the third year utilising a paid Administration to perform a multitude of administration tasks required of the club. The committee has worked at setting boundaries of responsibility to ensure smooth flow of tasks between the administrator and the committee. The challenge is to continue to build on this and provide a year-round comprehensive work program. Jane Tostevin has been a delight for all to work with and we look forward to working with her in the future. Junior Development Camp Season 2009/10 was about building and consolidation on our operational improvements from the last season. Thanks to the hard work of Jim Unkles and his personal 100+ hours on patrol we had a great season, and of course maintained our record of No Lives Lost. Thank you to our Patrol Captains who do so much to ensure that our beach is patrolled. lives of people experiencing disadvantage. The Great Peninsula Paddle is a joint venture with RecLink which allows participants the opportunity to paddle from Sorrento to Portsea along the stunning Mornington Peninsula shoreline gaining an exclusive paddler's perspective of the Peninsula’s clear blue waters and white sandy beaches. In this its first year we had positive feedback and we look forward to working with RecLink in the years ahead Julian Byrne, Ian Campbell and Tim Adams managed major works on the clubhouse over the 2009 winter which has set up the club to be structurally sound for a long time to come. The replacement of many of the outer deck support posts, the roof, part of the decking and the railings around the deck has made a huge improvement to the clubhouse. One of the ongoing issues we have had with such a large club and trying conditions has been to keep all our equipment up to scratch and operational. Equipment Manager Jesse Faulkhead was able to keep everything on track until the end of the season which made patrolling toward the end of the season much easier and enjoyable for all. Once again I have to report that there were no further discussions with National Parks on the renewal of our lease for the clubhouse despite some positive moves in early 2010 that negotiations would recommence. Our relationship with Life Saving Victoria continues to mature over the years. In my position on the Board of LSV for the last year I have been given more opportunity to articulate our position, and that of many of the larger clubs on issues that affect us day-to-day. Changes within their staff structure have also allowed more effective communication. I would like to thank all those that volunteered their time to make Portsea the great club it is. Whether you are in it for the community service, competition or the social aspect, dedicating your valuable time to ensure we maintain a safe swimming environment is a noble effort you can be proud of. Of course we could not do anything without those that make the club part of their lifestyle. Thank you the members of the club committee, especially my administration team, Ian Campbell, Tim Hart, Jo Lynch and Jonathon Tostevin. Ian Campbell will this year be standing down after 26 years’ service as Club Secretary. This is an astonishing effort and a day that many of us were hoping would never arrive. It will obviously be a challenge for us to replace him but will be a little easier with Ian still providing some assistance going forward. Jo Lynch, the Vice President for the last 5 years will also be stepping down this year. As well as the great work with the Boomer and eBoomer I have really appreciated Jo’s counsel and support over the years. I also thank Pippa Skinner, Toby Greig and Kelsey Hill for their efforts over their time on the club’s committee. Simon Wilson President Red Alert Anglesea 2010 Kelly McDonald in Beach Relay PRESIDENT’S FOREWORD With more people on the beach than in the past few summers, it was wonderful to see such strong performance on patrols evidenced by the number of patrolling members in attendance. The annual Bronze Patrol held at the completion of camp was captained by Tom Johnson with vice-captains Will Clancy and Ted Mitchell. The future of patrols at Portsea Surf Life Saving Club looks stronger than ever. I want to congratulation all Patrol Captains for their vigilance in encouraging members to patrol, weekend after weekend. Especially big thanks must go to Jimmy Unkles for his work not only in making our patrols stronger and more balanced than ever, but also in assisting in many areas outside his main responsibility. Hot on the heels of Bronze Camp was Cadet Camp ably run by Elena (Elmo) Parker and Jackie Gould with their small but committed team of instructors. Thanks to Elmo and Jackie for grooming our next batch of potential Bronzies. The Portsea Crocs Nipper program expanded this year to accommodate 330 children in this highly successful program The Nipper management team of Kerri Hart, Sue Traynor, Paul Hunter and James Paynter, under the expert guidance of Charlie Schall organised the program with their usual enthusiasm and professionalism. The 12/13 year old Nipper sessions were conducted at the Back Beach whilst the younger Nippers trained mainly on the Front Beach but also benefitted from attendance at some of the Back Beach sessions when the conditions were suitable. The aim was familiarise them with the beach that one day hopefully they will be responsible for patrolling. The Portsea Swim Classic this year saw a change of hands in organisers with Stuart Rayner handing over the reins to Will Ireland and Tom McInerny. As always the Swim Classic was a roaring success and ran as smoothly as ever. A huge thanks to all those that helped on the day and behind the scenes in the lead up. Pier to Perignon MC Graham Wells The season kicked off with Bronze Camp in December when 91 energetic kids descended on the club house for their week-long introduction to surf lifesaving. Pip Skinner in her final year as Chief Instructor did magnificently to manage all of the Instructors, Kitchen Staff and Water Safety staff while ensuring every Bronzie gained their Bronze Medallion with flying colours. Pip has been a great asset to the club, and will be sorely missed. The club thanks you for all your work during your time as Chief Instructor. The Pier to Perignon which continues to grow in popularity with increased numbers went along without a hitch as always with a calm Charlie Perkins at the helm. In the off-season we have had some new members taking on official positions and larger roles within the club helping the club move ahead and find that balance between patrolling, social activities, fundraising and competition. The major awards presented at Presentation night included; Patroller Of The Year - Elena Parker has been a member since Bronze Camp in 2006. She contributes to all aspects of the club, shows incredible patrol commitment and participates in all the training camps. Most of all Elena is a great role model for younger members. Club Captain’s Award - Jesse Faulkhead has really taken his involvement to a new level this season by assuming the Equipment Directors position and ensuring his role was performed to the best standard we have seen in years. Jesse not only ensured all the equipment was always ready to go, but assisted in the organisation and coordination of equipment and personnel. Jesse has also been an active contributor at all our fundraising events President’s Award - James Paynter joined the Nipper team as a Nipper parent with great vigour and passion. He worked hard on securing new sponsorships for the Nipper program and is now looking to expand this into other areas of the club. His positive and valuable contribution is helping address an area of the clubs operations that really needed a boost and we thank him for his efforts John Wishart Award - Jim Unkles took on the position of Lifesaving Director and has worked hard to ensure we maintain our record of No Live Lost on patrol. He is a dedicated patroller clocking-up 132 hours this season. He is a great contributor and supporter of the club’s different activities. He assisted with the Bronze Camp, Swim Classic, Pier to Perignon, Peninsula Paddle, and was always there to assist with any little job that needed doing. He has also been an active member of the competition team attending many carnivals over summer. The Golden Shovel was shared between Jerome Elliott, Cameron Bolton and David Simpson for raising the ire of the local emergency services with their surfing adventures. Thank you to all members who contributed their time and effort to make Portsea a better place. I hope to see you all again for the upcoming 2010 / 2011 season. John Tostevin Club Captain Pier to Perignon Presentations. It has been a most fulfilling 26 years working with some great lifesavers and committee members all of whom give so freely of their time to our great club. Thanks to my family; Lisa, Eliza, and Rory for their support during my time as Secretary Ian Campbell Secretary PATROL MANAGERS REPORT This year Portsea Surf Life Saving club volunteers totalled up over 4,800 hours of patrolling the Back Beach, an astounding effort and continued another season of No Lives Lost between the flags. This year saw many new faces take to the beach with 91 Bronzies experiencing everything that the club is about, with patrolling the beach whether it is flat as a bay beach all the way to 12 foot boomers! With a sense of nostalgia, this season saw a return to plenty of rescues been undertaken by our volunteer patrols, with everyone from newly qualified Bronzies right through to the veteran lifesavers of the Legends and Masochists patrols. A new record from recent years of 34 rescues in one day from the Masochists and White Pointers set the bar for the season, and must be congratulated for their efforts! The Bronze Patrol which was ably led by Patrol Captain Tommy Johnson and Vice Captains Ted Mitchell and Will Clancy was a rousing success. All Bronzies experienced what started off as a quiet day at the Back Beach but then the wind swung onshore and some challenging surf arrived. Rescue boards were surfed, outpost patrols started, roving patrols and Huey swims a plenty! Over 72 Bronzies signed on during the day and created a swarm of Red and Yellow that only other clubs could dream of. I must thank all the Patrol Captains for all their hard work. This group of leaders work to ensure that patrols are attended and the beach going public protected. I also express my thanks to the committee for giving me support for my first year undertaking this role. And finally the MEMBERS! Thank you for giving up your weekends and public holidays to patrol at Portsea. It is so rewarding to see everybody chipping in, and I hope to see all of you down at the surf club next season, and encourage you to get involved, whether it is patrolling more than this year or instructing on the Bronze, Cadet or Junior Development Camps. Jim Unkles Lifesaving Director POWERCRAFT & GEAR REPORT The 2009 / 2010 patrol season was a great success from an equipment point of view with most items passing the Gear Inspection the first time with only a few minor faults needing to be rechecked. The fully equipped Ord Minnett Inflatable Rescue Boat was on the beach at each rostered patrol and thanks to some hard work from dedicated members all of our rescue boards were kept in a great state all season. Thanks to all my helpers who worked tirelessly to keep everything running smoothly and let’s make 2010 / 2011 even better then the last. Jessie Faulkhead Gear Steward CLUBHOUSE DIRECTOR Another summer zooms past. And it was a busy one for our club house! Starting out with a considerable amount of works in winter 2009 we installed a new roof over the first level of the club house and the IRB room, replaced telephone-pole supports around the exterior of the club house, electrical replacement and upgrades throughout, and floor polishing of the Wishart and Eva rooms. This winter season we are targeting a grant to fund further works to the clubhouse including removal of the upstairs and downstairs fire places, adding an internal stairwell in its place directly into the day patrol room, renovation of the day patrol room, renovation of the adjoining gear room. Hopefully we receive the grant so that we can go ahead. Thanks to the Committee for another great year, and see you all next summer. Tim Adams Clubhouse Director Kelsey Hill and Cameron Bolton were taking Tropical Cyclone Ului and the 2 metre surf in their stride though Kelsey narrowly missed out in progressing through to the finals in the Surf Board Riding event. Cameron had gallantly competed in the surf race but struck out with a tough draw in the U/19 Surf Swim Quarter Finals. A great performance in the 2km Open Beach Run saw David Rowell pick up a well-deserved Silver medal. David added this fourth 2Km run medal to his Australian Championship haul over the past four years in what was an extremely fast race. This is an amazing achievement for David who has stayed at the top of his game year after year. He has gained high praise in Victoria and would have a claim as Victoria’s most successful Lifesaving athlete over the past four years. U/19 Beach Sprinter Luke Anthony crossed the line to take Bronze in this highly competitive event adding to his Bronze medal in the same event last year. U/19 Womens Beach Relay team of Amber King, Teisha King, Kelly Mac Donnell and Georgia Barry took Gold in this event. This is the first ever Beach Relay Gold medal performance from our club. Portsea’s previous best Beach Relay in the Nationals was Silver in 1983 and a Bronze in 2009, so. Congratulations Girls! Other outstanding performances on the Beach included; The U/19 Mens Beach Relay comprising James Cameron, John Tascone, Jarrod Shepherd and Luke Anthony recovering from a dropped baton in the heats to get into the final. The team missed out on a medal by just 30cm and Gold by less than 2m! Amber King’s 4th placing in the U/19 Womens Beach Flags adding to her Gold medal at the Victorian State Titles was a fantastic result. U/19 Beach Flags Jarrod Shepherd 5th despite a dislocated shoulder one month out. This was a result to be proud of. U/15 Beach Flags. Ryan Bedford’s 7th place was a great performance from someone who has competed in only two carnivals prior to his appearance at these Australian Titles. U/19 Beach Flags. Kelly McDonnell 7th. This was Kelly’s 4th appearance in an Australian Titles final. National competition in Masters is always hotly contested and our two old boys were well and truly in the heat of it. Rowan Cameron with a Bronze in the 50 - 55 Beach Flags and Jason Johannsson also with a Bronze in the 40 - 45 Beach Flags. Club Championships were well attended and conducted in a great competitive spirit. Some competition awards included: Junior Male Club Champion James Cameron, who competed at all the local carnivals and made finals in Sprints and Beach Flags. Junior Female Club Champ – Madison Bolton completed the Portsea Bronze Camp this season and wasted no time getting competitive. She showed impressive talent on the beach and in the water. She has a bright future ahead of her. Senior Male Club Champ - Cameron Bolton dominated in the water at the Club Championships. A regular competitor at Life Saving Victoria carnivals he showed promising results in the U/19 beach and swim events. Cam won the U/19 2km Run at the State Titles and made finals in the Rescue Board and Ironman and narrowly missed the final for the Open Mens Rescue Board. Red Alert Anglesea 2010 Senior Female Club Champ - Emily Cameron is a back-to-back title winner who is driven by an intensity and dedication that sets the benchmark for all competitors. She revealed her true versatility over both the beach and in the water at the Club Champs. Competitor Of The Year - Amber King showed all others in the competition what a difference a great training regime makes. At the State Titles she won the U/19 Beach Flags, the U/19 Beach Sprint and beat hot favourite Hayley Atkins from Anglesea in the Open Beach Sprint. At Australian Titles she came 4th in the U/19 Beach Flags final, was a finalist in the U/19 Beach Sprint and a Gold medallist in the U/19 Beach Relay. IRB Mechanic John Stringer The Titles witnessed the tragic death of Iron Man Saxon Bird from the Queenscliff club on Sydney’s northern beaches who was lost in the wild surf while competing in the U/19 Iron Man event. The Portsea Surf Life Saving club extends condolences to the Bird family. U/19 Beach Flags. John Tascone 7th. John only decided to go to the Aussies one week before to help out with the U/19 Beach Relay. Bronze Camp 2009 Chief Instructor Pip Skinner COMPETITION REPORT The Australian Championships were held in March at Kurrawa Beach on the Gold Coast and were the most successful in Portsea Surf Life Saving Club’s history with five Australian Championship medals. Yencken Cup - Cameron Bolton added this premier trophy to his swag of achievements during the year. 2010 Masters The Portsea Team was made up of Dwight Harrison; Simon Traynor, Charlie Schall; Henry Kiss; Cameron Hunter, Wayne Stoll, Peter Bolton; Ian Campbell; Michael Wilson ,Rowan Cameron, Jason Johannsson and Natalie Hood and was the largest team we have ever fielded and the first time ever we have fielded a woman competitor. Bronze Camp 2008 Run Swim Run Our water competitors are still a great, fit looking bunch of guys and they performed to expectations in Swim, Tube, Swim Teams, Craft and Taplin. The Portsea Club finished the day in 3rd position on the club ladder behind Mount Martha and Half Moon Bay. Or to look at it through rose-coloured surf goggles and discount the Royal clubs, we finished on top!! The Competition Team should be very proud of their achievements at local, State and National Championships and we look forward to a great season in 2010 – 2011. 2009 at a function held in the Olympic Room at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The theme centred on reminisces by leading club members from each decade; An emotional recollection of the 50's was ably delivered by Peter Horman; Vernon Spencer, Life Member, past Treasurer and President gave his views on the 60's; Simon (The Guv) Knight, Life Member, Past Club Captain, National Gold Medallist and current Patrol Captain of the Legends took us on a ramble through the 70's; Tim Hart, Life Member, current and longest serving Treasurer, National Gold Medallist and current Vice Captain of The Legends Patrol took us through the re-building phase of our great club in the 80's; Cameron Hunter, Life Member, Past President and National Gold Medallist enlightened all present on the Uncle Tobys era, the turbulent 90's and to complete this 60 year journey Emma Ronald, past Chief Instructor and past Club Captain brought a gentle touch to her presentation of the decade of the new millennium. There was also a presentation of a commemorative plaque by Life Saving Victoria President Mike Martin on behalf of Surf Life Saving Australia. Past member and SLSA legend Rex Sargent made a presentation of memorabilia and in a special moment, Tim Wishart presented the Bronze Medallion of his late father John Wishart to the club. It was agreed that the club would present the medal on permanent loan to Life Saving Victoria to be displayed at the Victorian Headquarters of LSV. The evening was a great success and our appreciation is extended to Jo Lynch and her organising committee of Jane Byrne, Ian Campbell, Tim Hart, Emma Ronald, Gus Ronald, Jane Tostevin and Simon Wilson. 60 YEARS OF VIGILANCE AND SERVICE NO LIVES LOST portsea O U R H I S T O R Y Portsea Clubhouse 1950's A SHORT HISTORY OF THE FIRST 60 YEARS PORTSEA SURF LIFE SAVING CLUB Affiliation with State Centre The club affiliated with the Victorian Surf Life Saving Association State Centre in 1949 Formed 1949 Following a tragic drowning in 1949 the SorrentoPortsea Surf Life Saving Club was formed to protect the less experienced surfers. At the inaugural meeting of the Sorrento-Portsea club, Mil Napthine was elected President, publicity officer and Inter-club representative. The Club Captain, Arthur Burge formerly a member of Torquay, was backed up by eight active members, all local residents. These founding active members were: Sam Stirling, John Kirchubel, Ron Knight, John Wishart, Len Coker, Cliff Smeaton, Stan Sonsie and John Robertson. The active member subscription was ten shillings per annum. Arthur Burge represented Australia in the Water Polo team at the post war 1948 London Olympics. The need for patrols was underscored when 34 people were rescued in that first summer, 24 requiring resuscitation. When the patrols were not on duty, there were three fatalities by drowning. Generous support and donations were forthcoming from many quarters including the Sorrento-Portsea Citizens League and the Portsea Ocean Park Committee of Management. Most useful was the small shed donated by the Flinders Shire Council to serve as a temporary Surf Clubhouse. In 1949 there were only two other Surf Clubs in Victoria; Torquay and Warrnambool that were at that time affiliated with the New South Wales Surf Life Saving movement. Sorrento-Portsea joined them in founding the Victorian Branch of the Surf Life Saving Association. Inaugural Club Committee President Club Secretary Club Captain Treasurer Vice Captain Patrol Captains Milton M Napthine John Scott Arthur Burge Neville Morgan Len Coker Len Coker John Wishart John Kirchubel Committee meetings were held at Morgans funeral parlour, later to become Morgans Bar in the ground floor of the Koonya Hotel 1st Delegates to State Centre Mil Napthine Arthur Burge John Kirchubel 1st Club House A group of keen surfers wanting to stay close to the surf over summer built a hut which evolved into the Back Beach Kiosk. The kiosk lasted throughout the years until destroyed by fire following an arson attack in the 1970's. The original clubhouse was a car packing crate which was replaced with a small shed donated by Flinders Shire Council to serve as a temporary Surf Clubhouse. The shed was located 200 metres east of the current clubhouse site. This temporary clubhouse quickly proved inadequate and extensions into a substantial two storey structure commenced in 1950 under the supervision of Club Secretary John Scott. The building was completed in January 1951 and during the carnival being held at the Portsea Back Beach was dedicated to the memory of the late Squadron Leader Simon Fraser DFC who died on active service on 11th October 1942. Simon was one of the pre-war unofficial lifesavers. Matt Hall after hs Bronze Exam 1950 The need for a surf club at the Mount Levy Ocean Beach behind Portsea was foreseen during the early 1930's. The beach was remote and only good swimmers ventured into the surf. The first recorded organised presence on the Back Beach is reported in The Argus on Friday 31 December 1937 where members of a Bayside Life Saving club holidaying at Portsea rescued 4 swimmers in difficulties. Many rescues were conducted in the late 30's but the outbreak of World War 2 interrupted any plans for forming a surf lifesaving club. Launch of The John Wishart 1958 The first permanent structure was erected on the present site in 1960 and was upgraded in 1972 with the addition of more storage areas. In 1985 the Committee and members of the Club commenced a rebuilding project to restore the premises which were severely damaged in a storm. Considerable assistance was given by the Peninsula residents, business community and local service clubs. 1951/1952 SLSC Members Aussies 2001 Portsea Mens Surf Team Extract from the 2nd copy The Club's annual Dinner will be held at the Nepean Hotel, Portsea on Saturday 11th August 1956 at 6:00pm. John Wischart In 1980 - 1981 a new format Portsea Boomer was re-launched and has been printed every month since that time. The Portsea Foundation was formed by a number of associate members towards the end of the renovations when the club had exhausted its reserves of funding for the work. A further remodelling took place in 1999 - 2000 which included a decking extension to the western end of the clubhouse and the addition of IRB storage and kiosk A beach access ramp from upper car park to the clubhouse and then down to the beach was completed in 1996. The original badge of the club was surf reel inside a circle with the wording Sorrento Portsea Surf Life Saving Club. Competition teams shown in early photographs show a cap with only one single stripe. Ladies Auxiliary In the 1975 - 1976 season the ladies Auxiliary was founded by Gwen Reardon sister of Life Member Russ White with a major raffle which raised $1,007. A street stall in Sorrento run by Mrs Margaret Law raised funds towards necessary lifesaving equipment. Another notable member was Lois Eva, mother of long serving President and Life Member Brian Eva. The Ladies Auxiliary was disbanded in 1981 following the introduction of female active members into the association. Club Newsletter In 1956 the Club magazine "The Boomer" Was launched by Portsea's Public Relations Officer John Nugent. In 2007/2008 under the Boomer underwent a total redesign printed in full colour and distributed quarterly supplemented by a fortnightly email distributed publication titled The eBomer. 1st Portsea Carnival The first carnival to be held at the Portsea Back Beach took place on 7th January 1951. John Wishart In The News On Monday 21 October 1929 in an article in The Argus it was reported that as Alec Barlow with passenger Hugh Hughes was attempting to take off in his light plane from a paddock he realised he was not going to clear the power lines so dipped down under them. He clipped his undercarriage on a fence and ploughed into Stringers Grocery Store. The incident was observed by Mrs Margaret Mary (known as "Biddy") Wishart nee Lonergan, wife of James Michael Wishart (manager of Stringers). Mary and Michael were the parents of Portsea legend John Wishart who was in the store in his pram at the time of the incident. No serious injuries were sustained however the veranda of the store was demolished in the accident. Incorporation The Club started life as an unincorporated Association and was incorporated on 13th January 1983. The driving force behind the incorporation was then current President Gerry Reardon and Secretary Brian Eva. Televised Carnival Portsea was the host of the first Victorian Carnival to be televised. The carnival was held on January 5th 1958 before a crowd estimated to be in excess of 15,000 making it the largest carnival of the season. A mass rescue of 50 swimmers carried out by reel and line was undertaken at the carnival. Portsea Nippers In 1969 Jack Bednall started the Portsea Junior (Nippers) section for boys aged 9-13. The temporary clubhouse was now inadequate for our purposes and work started on a two storey structure under the supervision of Club Secretary John Scott. Sorrento-Portsea appeared in inter-club competitions for the first time at the Victorian Championships held on the Torquay beach. 1950/1951 Active membership reaches 15. 37 people rescued during the season. Work commenced on the second storey of the new clubhouse. 1951/1952 Portsea was selected as the venue for the Victorian Surf Lifesaving Championships. Nine Clubs competed but unfortunately exceptionally heavy surf permitted only the beach events to be held. A lifesaving demonstration was hastily arranged to provide entertainment for the very large crowd that attended. The Club's funds were augmented by £140. The Championships were held at a later date at Torquay. 1952/1953 Active membership has now reached 37. 47 rescues carried out over the season with the most being performed during one four day period. On the 2nd January 1953 member Tom Willis dives from London Bridge in a valiant attempt to rescue a fisherman who had been swept away. John was one of Victoria's top surf lifesavers, had represented the State and personally been instrumental in 30 rescues. His passing was a great loss to the Club . A number of members transferred to the new Point Leo Club, leaving only 24 members to start the season. However a big recruiting and training effort by Roy Boyce, Mal Hall and Sam Stirling doubled the active membership by January. The estate of the late Thomas Baker donated the Club a surf boat named the "Lady Nelson" named after the first Royal Navy Ship to enter Port Phillip Bay. We had a very good competition year. The Club won a surf reel at the first carnival and a surfboat, donated by B.P. at the last carnival which was held at Ocean Grove. The deciding factor in winning the surfboat was the points earned by outsider Terry Smith who came in fourth in the senior surf race. The Club committee started to plan the construction of a new clubhouse. 1960/1961 Jack Hopper is made the first Life Member of the club. Both Mr Nick Thom and Mr Kevin Morris were awarded the Bronze Medal in 1962, the following is taken from the archives of the Royal Humane Society. The Portsea Surf Life Saving Club was phoned for help, and a party of life savers arrived, quickly followed by a reel and line. When Morris arrived he saw Opie and Bishop about 100 yards out with Offor on their surf board. He swam out to help them, and as he neared them they were swept from their board. He swam to Offor and, with difficulty, swam with him through the surf to the shore. When the reel arrived from Portsea, Thom put on the belt and swam 150-200 yards, accompanied by Peter Campbell. They commenced to bring Wentworth ashore. When they reached the breakers Campbell left Thom in order not to hamper him, but when still 30 yards from shore Campbell was exhausted and had to be rescued by another beltman. Wentworth did not respond to treatment. The rescue operations were abandoned because of the worsening conditions. The following Portsea members and local people were awarded Royal Humane Society. Paul Offor: Bronze Medal Ronald Percival Opie: Bronze Medal Allan John Bishop: Bronze Medal Kevin Francis Morris: Bronze Medal Noel Rodney Campbell: Certificate of Merit Peter Neil Campbell: Certificate of Merit Nicholas Thom: Bronze Medal Graeme Lindsay Schlipalius: Certificate of Merit James Douglas Farfor: Certificate of Merit Ian Robert McCorkell: Certificate of Merit Harold Noel Clarke: Certificate of Merit The following two people who lost their lives had their names recorded in the archives: John Edwin Strahan, Bundoora (Vic), aged 21 years, who lost his life in going to the rescue of Robert Evans Harvey Townshend Wentworth, Frankston (Vic), ambulance driver, aged 33 years, who lost his life in going to the rescue of Robert Evans and John Strachan at Koonya Beach, Sorrento, on 10th December 1961. It was the best equipped in Victoria, with an excellent first-aid room, ready to meet any emergency. Andy Wright was one again chosen for the Victorian State Team to compete at the Australian Titles but regretfully relinquished his place on the team due to impending examinations. The second Portsea shield which was created around 1958 is replaced by the current design. 1964/1965 Our Club Champion, Mike Phelan, won the State Belt Title and was selected to represent Victoria at the Australian Championships in Western Australia. Secondly, Tony Briglia and Jeff Hart organised a Bronze Medallion training camp. Eleven prospective new members participated in an intensive week-long course of Bronze Medallion training. We hope these new activities will encourage young men to join our Surf Lifesaving Club to participate in both patrols and competition. The legendary Portsea Bronze Camp is born! 1970/1971 Angus Milligan is awarded Life Membership of the club.
