Annual Report - Catholic Social Services
2015 Impact Report GOING WIDER for Seniors GOING DEEPER for Families Hope and Dignity for All Dear Friends, Last year, Catholic Social Services had the honor to serve 13,000 seniors and families. By helping seniors live independent, connected lives and by helping families thrive, we continued our 70-year tradition of providing services that address the community’s unmet needs. While we are proud of our efforts, we are not satisfied; we see an urgent need to do more. Seeing the population of seniors grow rapidly and families facing more complicated challenges, we recognize an opportunity to provide more meaningful help. Rachel Lustig President & CEO That is why this year, we developed and implemented a strategy to Go Wider and Deeper. ‘Go Wider for Seniors’ to help more seniors age with grace and independence. ‘Go Deeper for Families’ to provide more holistic care to help families thrive. We made huge strides in 2015! We served 17% more seniors last year, helping an additional 420 of our elderly neighbors to age with dignity and independence. We provided more intense care in each of our family programs, and the 96,000 meals provided became entry points to individually focused opportunities. And, we keep building as there are exciting initiatives being launched in 2016 for both seniors and families. Thomas R. Winters Board Chair But, we didn’t do this by ourselves. We could not have done this without YOU. YOUR generosity ensures help for seniors and families when they need it most. YOUR time spent in strategy, companionship, volunteering and prayer more than doubles our capacity. YOUR passion inspires us to see the dignity in each person. YOUR hope helps us imagine a brighter future in each situation. YOUR trust makes it possible for us to build new opportunities for our clients. YOU are living Pope Francis’ call to have “our every word and gesture, ought to express God’s compassion, tenderness and forgiveness for all.” YOU are Catholic Social Services! Rachel Lustig Thomas R. Winters MISSION Motivated by faith, Catholic Social Services helps poor and vulnerable seniors and families reach their potential. VISION Catholic Social Services envisions a world in which all who are in need are able to meet their potential to live with dignity, hope, and purpose. While the gift of life is a tremendous blessing, aging can be a challenge – especially in the face of poverty, disability, or isolation. Many seniors have compounding challenges, such as declining health, limited mobility, and shrinking incomes. According to the “Report to the Community 2015” by the Ohio Association of Area Agencies on Aging, the senior population in Ohio will grow by 47% by 2030. CSS’s services are a scalable solution to care for our growing population of seniors. It is our goal to grow the number of seniors we serve by 8% each year, so we can double the number of seniors we serve in 10 years. Currently, we are positioned to meet this goal. In 2015, we served 17% more seniors. SENIOR IMPACT REPORT We are helping seniors remain independent. 100 % living needs met Our services are a solution to care for our growing population of seniors. It is our goal to double the seniors we serve in 10 years. 4 n 95% of Supportive Services clients and 98% of Transportation Services clients said CSS helped them remain independent n 100% of clients have living needs met through Payee and Money Management programs We are combating isolation that homebound seniors face. n 95% of our companionship clients feel less lonely In 2015, we served 17% more seniors than in 2014 ANNE’S STORY At 71, Anne was working 18 hours a week to supplement her Social Security funds, and she was still struggling to make ends meet. On most days she ate only one meal – a hot dog and one slice of bread. With some persuasion from her granddaughter, Anne agreed to meet with Tania, a social worker from Catholic Social Services in our Licking County office, and she slowly allowed Tania to help her work through her depression and obtain food and affordable housing. Today, Anne lives in subsidized senior housing and “loves” her new home. She says that before, “I was like a robot, just getting by each day,” but since moving, Anne has made new friends who have brought joy back into her life. Now she has the freedom to visit her neighbors, go to the community center and join in the activities or have a meal, and she can even afford to “order a pizza now if I want.” Anne is proud of her independence and amazed by what a positive difference Catholic Social Services has made in her life. See more of Anne’s story on the video on our website: www.colscss.org. 5 We are proud to say we served 10,114 people through our family programs, and we have a 95% satisfaction rate. Our family services range from food assistance to intensive counseling and case management support. People come to us when they need just a little help, but more often, their challenges run deeper, and they need more help to get back on their feet. Going DEEPER for FAMILIES That is why we are strengthening our efforts to “Go Deeper for Families” to build a deeper, trusting relationship to help families thrive through more holistic and intensive care. Together, we can help families build a stable income and network of loving and accountable relationships. We are helping families to thrive by growing our intensive services. FAMILY IMPACT REPORT How did we go deeper? n 100% domestic violence survivor housing stabilization n 96,000 100 % stable housing meals provided n 90% depression improvement in counseling n 98% of graduates of violence intervention class stayed out of jail n 54% increase in services at the St. Francis Catholic Outreach Center 6 90 % depression improvement BRIAN’S Story Brian had a hard life, and he had made some bad choices. By the age of 22, he had been and out of jail with a history of drug abuse was separated from his wife. But when his son was born addicted to heroin, it was a wake-up call. He knew he needed to be a better father, and to learn how to do that, he sought help the St. Francis Catholic Outreach Center anger management and parenting education classes. As we got to know Brian, we were able to support his efforts to stay clean and find a stable job. The classes helped Brian learn how to walk away from bad situations and stop and think about the consequences of his actions before reacting. Today, Brian has a steady job and was recently awarded custody of his children. He is determined to make a better life for himself and his sons, and to give them the life all three of them deserve. in and at for 54% increase in services AT St. Francis Catholic Outreach Center St. Francis Catholic Outreach Center, Portsmouth Staff, Leadership, and Volunteers 7 VOLUNTEERS We want to thank our volunteers for their kindness, generosity, and service to seniors and families at Catholic Social Services. Friend Raisers Because of people like Tom and Andrea Mackessy and John and Linda Mackessy, who brought their friends together, we were able to invite more people into our mission. These events were opportunities to tell guests more about our programs and community impact and the difference their support can make for our seniors and families.
