The Rose Cup Races, set for July 29 - 31, 2016 will still be a highlight Sanctioned Event on the Festival’s calendar of events. The Rose Festival will turn over operational controls to the group, made up of experienced racers and race management personnel from the Sports Car Club of America, the Cascade Sports Car Club and dedicated PIR volunteers. “The Rose Cup Races have been a part of the Rose Festival since 1961, and continuing that tradition is very important,” said Jim Franzen, long time Race Chairman for the Rose Festival. “Looking ahead, the Rose Festival felt having FOPIR working with the “Turning this historically significant racing event over to these dedicated professionals of FOPIR, will ensure the Rose Cup Races have the best opportunity for future growth and development,” said Jeff Curtis, CEO, Portland Rose Festival Foundation. “Although we are stepping back from the controls, the Portland Rose Festival will continue featuring the race as a prominent event. We know that the expertise and energy this group brings will grow the race in exciting new ways.” FOPIR is a 501(c)(3) non-profit committed to the preservation and enhancement of Portland International Raceway (PIR) as a resource for those who use it, sustaining and expanding PIR’s civic contribution as an institution in North Portland in a manner that assures its ongoing value as a venue for motorsports and other diverse forms of recreation and entertainment. The first step is for a Race Committee to be formed with event planning following quickly thereafter. More information regarding the 2016 Rose Cup Races is expected after the first of the year. Loud Pedal 3 Oregon Region SCCA - Annual Meeting and Banquet Photos by Sandra Ferrick and Jeff Zurschmeide Loud Pedal 5 By Lacey Otis Solo Director The annual Solo awards banquet was held on November 7th. In addition to the awards for class championships, there were 3 special awards given out. The special awards were for Driver of the Year, Novice Driver of the Year, and the Doug Barrett Sportsman of the Year. Solo Special Awards Presented to Dan Bullis Aaron Safstrom, and Mina Ingraham Dan Bullis (l) and Aaron Safstrom. The Doug Barrett Sportsman of the Year award was given to Dan Bullis. Dan received this award because he went above and beyond to help make Solo events happen. Dan had initially volunteered to chair one event during the season, but he ended up chairing 3 events because a member became injured and was no longer able to participate. When we needed someone at the last minute, Dan was there. Dan also took it upon himself to help out novice members at the events. Dan likes to have a good time and he brings a lot of fun to the Solo group. The Novice Driver of the Year award was given to Aaron Safstrom. Not only is Aaron an excellent novice driver (he won E Prepared), but he also jumped on board the Solo committee right away. Aaron was willing to help out wherever he could. There were multiple times when Aaron showed up at 6:00am to help set up the event and he stayed late to help with the tear down. 6 The Driver of the Year award was given to Mina Ingraham. The 2015 season was a great one for Mina. Regionally she won the Street Touring Ultra championship. At the Packwood National Tour, Mina won Street Touring Ultra Ladies and at the Packwood Pro Solo, Mina Oregon Region SCCA won Ladies Class 3 and the Ladies Challenge. Mina then went on to win the National Championship in Street Touring Ultra Ladies. Mina accomplished quite a lot in 2015. Congratulations to everyone who won an award! By Todd Harris, Regional Executive The 2015 racing season has come to a close. The holiday season is now in full swing, with Christmas lights and music everywhere you turn. A perfect time to reflect on the past year. It’s also a time to start dreaming about the upcoming year (and racing season). Every racer, worker, official, and race fan has many wishes they would like to have Santa bring them. A new helmet, tickets to the Indy 500, a regional championship, or even a new Rose Cup….. As Oregon Region SCCA’s newly elected Regional Executive, I’ve spoken to many of our members recently in an effort to hear their thoughts about our club. Through these discussions it has become clear to me that our membership holds the Oregon Region near and dear to their heart. Fantastic stories about “the good old days”are tempered with concern about our racing future. Ask Not What Oregon Region Can Do For You How do we increase the fun factor at our events for everyone involved? How do we entice more racers to join us on our race weekends? How do we bring new, and younger, people into our club? These are just a few of the many questions I’ve heard. While there may not be clear answers to these questions, it will be up to myself and our Board of Directors to lead Oregon Region into the 2016 season and beyond. Our board is composed of several smart, passionate people willing to put in the hard work needed to create opportunities for the success of our club. members. We will be looking for people to step up and contribute in many different ways in the coming months. To paraphrase President Kennedy, “ask not what the Oregon Region can do for you – ask what you can do for Oregon Region.” Now go relax by the fireplace with your eggnog as Bing Crosby sings White Christmas. You’re going to need some rest…..we’ve got work to do next year. But the BOD can’t do all the work without support from its Loud Pedal 7 By Jim Weidenbaum Area 13 Director We’re not in Kansas anymore… No wait, actually, I will be in Kansas shortly for my first SCCA Board of Directors meeting, representing SCCA Area 13. I’ve already reviewed an 83 page BOD brief, followed by supplemental brief, various financial statements, and deep dive studies commissioned by the current Board. Having been in corporate leadership positions, I understand the Board must focus on issues, get to the crux of the matter, then determine a course of action without making every decision a mini-series in length and/or drama. What’s unique to the SCCA is it needs to run like a business, yet be highly aware that every decision likely impacts someone who is passionate about its outcome. At our core is the need to build SCCA’s current membership base of drivers, workers, and stewards. Yet, SCCA has a huge opportunity to expand our presence among those who love “playing” with cars, but who may not be part of the racing community. Track Night in America and Street Survival are two current programs that introduce non-members and non-racers to SCCA. Top Dead Center - Heading for Topeka current, traditional SCCA Club Racing, Solo, and Stage Rally. The Board can develop new initiatives and build up exiting programs, but where the rubber hits the road/tarmac/dirt/snow is at the Region level. It is incumbent on the Board to ensure there is a clear path for the Regions to succeed. There is sure to be animated Board dialog on Club Racing classes, the Majors, and continuing to rotate the Runoffs around the country. There will also, most assuredly, be some direct conversation regarding when new programs, such as Track Night in America, become a regular event that Regions “own,” i.e., apply for a sanction and run the event, with its success or failure owned by the Region. I am determined for our Vintage racers to be getting a fair shake at the national level and will be interested to see how the Board supports this key group. Having raced many SCCA weekends at Heartland Park, including FV races against our CEO, I look forward to returning to Kansas … this time to do my best to ensure SCCA members are the clear winners. Loud Pedal 11 15-Race Formula 4 United States Championship Calendar Unveiled SCCA Pro Racing today announced the dates for the inaugural FIA-certified F4 United States Championship Powered by Honda season. The 2016 calendar features five tripleheader race weekends to decide the season-long Championship. The entry-level, cost-contained open wheel series has generated significant interest since its September launch, with chassis manufacturer Crawford sending, to date, 92 purchase agreements to teams, drivers and schools. “At the F4 United States Championship launch, we stated that we were searching for a five-stop, 15-race schedule on premier tracks, M REALTY concentrating on the eastern half of the United States to start,” Steve Oseth, SCCA Pro Racing GM said. “We’ve done that, and now can let those interested in the Series know not just what they can race, but when and where.” portland homes for cars.com specializing in homes with large garages I have buyers waiting for homes today! • Forest Heights area • 5 bedrooms • 4800 square feet • 3 car garage if you are thinking about selling your • 900 square foot shop home, now is a great time. The following two stops on the schedule are at New Jersey Motorsports Park, June 1012, and Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, August 13-14. Both events include participation from SCCA Pro Racing’s Trans Am Series, with the MidOhio date highlighted by the NASCAR Xfinity Series. Road Atlanta, September 17-18, will be shared with HSR’s fall vintage weekend. The inaugural championship will conclude at Homestead-Miami Speedway with Trans Am, October 9-10. A mid-season break was built into the schedule to allow each team a chance to reset before the push to the end of the season. With two events still on the calendar, everyone can examine data from the first part of the season to optimize both car and driver for a chance to capture the inaugural series championship. The F4 United States Championship will join FIA Formula 4 championships already established in Australia, China, Germany, Italy, Japan, Northern Europe and the United Kingdom for 2016. An American-built Crawford carbon-composite chassis and Honda K20 C1 2.0-liter engine, producing the FIA-mandated 158 hp, leads the series. Pirelli P Zero racing radial tires complete the package, which will meet the FIA price cap of $45,000 for the chassis, including paddle shifters, data acquisition and camera. The Honda engine will carry a oneyear lease price of $6,600. Tires will be priced at approximately $250 apiece, with a maximum allotment of six tires (three front, three rear) per race weekend. Cars will begin delivery to customers in January. At the September launch, the Series announced a prize plan of $1,000 to win each of the three weekend races, with an additional $1,000 prize to the “weekend champion,” the driver who scores the most points in the three-race event. $500 and $250 goes to the additional podium finishers in each race of the season. A cash prize is also up for grabs for the top three season-long Championship finishers. More information on the F4 United States Championship Powered by Honda can be found at F4USChampionship. com. Only Compact SUVs sell more units. As a result, the mid-size sedan is absolutely critical for every automaker, and they do a good job of keeping feature lists long and prices low, to please the widest possible group of buyers. In this rough-and-tumble market competition, Toyota Camry is the most popular choice, followed by the Honda Accord, and then the Nissan Altima. All of these are strong contenders, but I believe the 2016 Kia Optima is the best mid-size sedan on the market today, and I’ll tell you why. The Optima starts at $22,665, beating the Camry and Accord by over $1,000, and the Altima by over $600. All the contenders have comparable base engines, but with the Optima, you get a very well refined 2.4-liter direct-injected engine rated at 185 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque. The 16 Optima also offers optional engines including a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine at 178 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque, or a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine at 245 horsepower and 260 poundfeet of torque. The Optima with the 1.6-liter turbo engine starts at $24,815 and the 2.0-liter turbo Optima starts at $36,615. With almost all Optima trim levels, you get a 6-speed automatic transmission, which is a big step up from the continuously variable transmissions offered by many competitors. The sporty 1.6-liter turbo Optima comes with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, which is unusual at that comparatively low price point. In all grades of the Optima, you get competitive fuel economy, ranging between 22 to 28 MPG in the city, and from 32 to 39 MPG on the highway. The best fuel economy of 28/39 comes with the sporty 1.6-liter Turbo model. Inside the Optima, Kia has really raised their game over the past Oregon Region few years. All trim levelsSCCA give you a comfortable and well-equipped cabin, with all the technology and safety features you expect in a new car. With the exception of the base model, you can get Kia’s UVO data services feature with GPS navigation, and most trim levels offer the Harman/Kardon QuantumLogic premium stereo system. Bluetooth hands-free phone and music streaming is standard across the line, as is a rear-view camera and a host of other comfort and convenience features. Out on the road, you’ll find the Optima delivers a solid ride, confident handling, and a driving experience that far exceeds its price tag. The cabin is quiet, even on Portland’s rough freeways. Most importantly, all safety and stability control features are standard across the entire line – you don’t sacrifice any safety features by buying the base model, which is good for budget-minded families. If you’re shopping for a mid-size family sedan this year, I strongly encourage you to put the 2016 Kia Optima on your list. Cross-shop the competition, and I think you’ll find that Kia Optima will deliver value, features, and a satisfying driving experience throughout the line. Looking for Speed in the Off-Season? By Paul Goudy, Road Racing Director The trophies have been handed out for the season and now the big question; “How can I become faster for next year?” For many racers the focus is on the car, “what can be modified on the car to get more power, more traction, better handling and better braking”? A better question is; “What can I do myself to become a better and faster driver?” This past week I found myself running laps in a Race Simulator at Maher Solutions in Hillsboro, Oregon Maher Solutions is a local company that specializes in Race Simulators. It is owned and operated by Keith Maher. Keith offers a full service, state of the art Racing Simulator to both Amateur and Professional Race Drivers and Teams. How about a different car? Keith has the ability to put you into a wide variety of cars, at no additional cost. Try that on a race weekend. How about passing drills or working on specific corners or sections on a particular track? Keith can custom program the Simulator to a wide variety of situations, including working on specific driver needs. Do you get easily frustrated with slow drivers who block? (Who doesn’t?) The Simulator can be programmed to put the driver into circumstances that require him/her to deal with these types of challenges, allowing the driver to gain the necessary skills and patience to deal with specific situations effectively. It becomes understandable why several top professional race teams have their own Race Simulators and why many top drivers use them on a regular basis. For more information go to: www.SimToWin.com or call Keith at 503-877-9647 Tired of spending big money on the car and not going any faster? Why not invest in yourself? Our photo-realistic world class racing simulator allows you to practice and test before the race weekend at a fraction of the cost of test days. So you arrive prepared to win! www.mhrsols.com 503-267-4226 These Simulators are not toys nor are they games. They go way beyond toys and games. I had used a Simulator several years ago to learn a new track. My visit to Maher Solutions showed how the technology has advanced. Want to learn a new track? A Simulator can help, not only to learn the corners, but also the rhythm, braking points, shift points, etc. Loud Pedal 17 October 2015 Board Meeting Minutes OREGON REGION SCCA B O A R D O F D I R E C TO R S MEETING MINUTES APPROVED: D AT E 1 0 / 2 1 / 2 0 1 5 PLACE: Raccoon Lodge Restaurant P R E S E N T: B O A R D M E M B E R S : J i m We i d e n b a u m , C h r i s H a l e , P a u l G o u d y, L a c e y O t i s , Ti m F e r r i c k OFFICIALS: Mary Thompson, K a re n M c C o y MEMBERS: Donna Battin, A a ro n B u c c i A B S E N T: B r u c e Wi l s o n , Ti m F e r r i c k , H a n s G u t m a n n , To d d H a r r i s , J e ff Z u r s c h m e i d e , Carrie Sutherland, Kim McFarland C A L L TO O R D E R : R E J i m c a l l e d t h e m e e t i n g t o o rd e r at 7:05 MEMBER/NEW BUSINESS COMMENTS: Minutes a p p ro v e d L a c e y / C h r i s T h e s e c re t a r y p re s e n t e d t h e election slate as submitted to h e r b y Ti m F e r r i c k .
