Remembering Two Great Men of Our Time Ron Tonkin and Bobby Plotts
By Jeff Zurschmeide,
Loud Pedal Editor
T
The other great man we lost this
month is Bobby Plotts - and if you
never met Bobby, you missed out.
But if you can’t bring his face to
mind, Bobby was the guy who
drove the white Dodge Dakota flattow truck at many SCCA, Cascade,
and Historic races over the years.
You might recall him as the short
and portly fellow with a trucker cap
and a ready smile.
Bobby was a great collector - an entire room in his home was devoted
to complete collections of car magazines from the 1950s and 60s - many
titles I’d never even heard of!
What I will remember most about
Bobby - besides his encyclopedic
knowledge of old cars and the
people who raced with us back in
the day, is that I never once heard
him say an uncharitable word about
another soul.

rolet dealer in the United States at
age 29 in 1960. His dealership was
also a gas station, and Ron pumped
gas 7 days a week to keep it going.
But the dealerships did go, and over
the years Ron Tonkin became synonymous with cars in Portland. He
brought our city its Ferrari dealership - and Ron Tonkin Gran Turismo is now the oldest established
Ferrari dealer in America.
Ron was genial and friendly - and
well known for driving his bright
Giallo (yellow) Ferrari 330 convertible around town and on special
events such as the Monte Shelton

the featured speaker a few years
ago, and recounted his early years
in the auto business with his trademark humor and humility.

Owner Derrick Ambrose Publishes Performance Guide
T
he most common thing in the
automotive world is advice - it’s
more common than scuff marks on
wheels or badly-applied stick-on
bling. And most of the advice that
you pick up on forums or enthusiast
websites is worth exactly what you
paid for it.

can trust that he knows what he’s

ficulty of installation, and approximate costs. The back of the book has
a section on common engine codes,
and a spotter’s guide.
That’s why a good book written
by someone who has actually been
elbow-deep in performance modification is worth paying for and reading. You can be sure that the author
isn’t just reciting what “everyone
knows” because someone heard it
somewhere else.
Derrick laid out his book with a
good idea - and respect for his readers’ intelligence. Chapter 1 is “Why
Modify?” where he gives good
reasons to make a change. Then he
dives into what you need to think
through and plan before you begin.
That’s rare, because it encourages
you to think before you buy. Follow
Derrick’s rules and you’ll not only
succeed - you’ll like the car when
you’re done with it.
One of the genius aspects of the
book is the production - a lay-flat
spiral binding, and the paper is
extra thick to survive use. It’s all

That’s just one of the good things
about Derrick Ambrose’s new book
- The Ultimate Mazda Performance
Guide for 2004+ models. You already know Derrick; he drives the
little gray Mazda2 in B-Spec and
won the Western Conference Majors championship last year. He’s
also the owner of CorkSport Mazda
The balance of the book is laid out
in sections covering Power, Handling, Styling, and Packages. In
each section, Derrick covers the
available products, why you want

From Stock to Street Changes for the 2014 Solo Season
Flying Solo with
Lacey Otis
T
he 2014 Solo season will bring
changes to the current Stock
Category. The Stock Category is
for series produced cars with very
limited modifications. Although car
modifications in this category are
very limited you are allowed to run
on R-compound (race) tires. It is
not mandatory to use R-compound
tires, but they are needed if you
want to be competitive. This has
always been a bit counter-intuitive
considering the category is called
Stock.
National level participation in the
current Stock Category has been declining over recent years. Feedback
provided by the membership revealed that the majority of members
are in favor of the Stock Category
using street tires. At the regional
level, classes that use street tires
have also had the highest number of
participants.
One of the great things about Solo
is that it is very accessible; it is also
relatively inexpensive compared to
other forms of motorsport. However, up until now if you planned
to compete in a Stock class at the
national level you needed to budget
for R-compound tires.
While R-compound tires can be
very fun and provide for a better
handling car, they also carry an additional level of cost and complexity.
Street tires provide significantly
longer competitive life than R-compound tires, which can substantially
reduce tire costs over the course of a
season. Many of the top street tires
10

are also very capable in both wet
and dry conditions.
The 2014 season will bring with it a
new category known as Street. The
Street Category is effectively replacing the existing Stock Category;
it includes nearly all of the same
cars and permits many of the same
modifications, but with a few key
differences.
The most substantial difference is
that the Street Category requires
the use of tires designed for highway use on passenger cars with a
minimum treadwear rating of 140
(increasing to 200 for 2015). This
means no more R-compound tires
for the category previously known
as Stock.
The Street Category also adds a
wheel diameter allowance of plus or
minus one inch. The transition from
Stock to Street also brings the reclassification of some cars between
classes.
This is a significant set of rule
changes, so 2014 is being handled as
Oregon Region SCCA
a transition year. The previous Stock
Category will remain in place for
2014, but will be renamed Street-R
(SR). The class will follow the same
rules as Stock did for 2013. In 2015
Street-R will be reduced to a single
class known as Super Street-R, reserved for higher horsepower cars.
Oregon Region has had a long running “Street Tire” class that was
originally created as a place for
Stock Category cars to compete on
street tires. Predictably the transition from Stock to Street has made
this “Street Tire” class unnecessary so it has been replaced with a
new class called “Open PAX”. (The
existing “Open PAX” class has been
renamed “Pro PAX”)
The new Open PAX class will allow
competitors from undersubscribed
classes to combine together and
compete for season trophies. Cars
from any class are allowed, including ones running street tires, Rcompound tires or even full racing
slicks.
The results will be calculated using
the RTP/PAX index just as we do in Pro PAX
(and in the old Street Tire class).
The rule changes for 2014 are substantial, if you
have a Stock/Street class car I highly recommend you take some time to review the 2014
SCCA Solo Rules posted at scca.com.
If any of this information is as confusing to
you as it was to me when I first learned of the
changes, please feel free to join us at our next
committee meeting or our upcoming kick-off
party. There will be several people on hand to
help explain the new categories and classes. For
information about Solo Committee meetings
please visit the Solo website from the Oregon
Region home page (oregonscca.com). You can

OREGON REGION SCCA BOARD OF
DIRECTORS MEETING MINUTES
UNAPPROVED:
DATE: 11/20/13
PLACE: Caro Amico Restaurant
PRESENT: BOARD MEMBERS: Bruce

ABSENT: Bob Brands, Andrew Foley,
Jim Weidenbaum, Carrie Sutherland
CALL TO ORDER: RE Bruce called the
meeting to order at 7:00 pm. Minutes
were approved (Kim/Terrill)
MEMBER/NEW BUSINESS COMMENTS: Dan spoke about the planning
for this years Rose Cup event. The
committee will meet tomorrow to work
on planning. Besides our SCCA groups
they are looking at GASS, Karting, and
perhaps Pro 3. Sorry that Pirelli will
not join us this year, the date does suit
them.
Dan mentioned that Todd Butler has
suggested a purse. This will be discussed at the meeting.
Bruce stated that this event is not only
good for our club but also makes us
a part of the community. He thanked
Dan for all of his efforts on the regions
behalf for this great event.
REGIONAL OFFICE: No issues Karen
presented balance sheets
Karen did want to discuss the Tow
Fund as we presently have it.
Now it is $10 per Ntl. Entry and goes to
OR. Region drivers who
Go to the runoffs. This year we had 229
Ntl entries and 11 drivers went to the
Runoffs.
Some comments were:
Shows we are there for our drivers and
other regions take notice of the fact that
we support our drivers this way.
We already pay SCCA Ntl. an additional tow fund on entries.
Suggest we do it on Regional’s as well.
Don’t get rid of it, ask for it to be voluntary.
Try for sponsorship of tow fund
Terrell suggested that he and Karen call
each driver and get their opinion on the
disposition of the 2013 funds.
Dan suggested that we have a mandatory driver’s mtg. There, these types of
issues as well as other concerns can be
communicated to those involved. This
works well for SF Region who has done
this for several years.
It was also mentioned that we should
look at a worker tow fund.
TREASURER: Absent
LOUD PEDAL: Jeff reports that everything is, “Groovy”
The Dec. issue will be on line and a
printed one will be in Jan.
He would like us to pursue being able
to do a, “blast” to members when an
issue is produced on line.
DIRECTORS REPORTS:
SOLO II: George said the 2014 schedule
is close to be finalized. There are still
some conflicts to be worked out.
Karen mentioned that Norpac has a
presentation packet that can be used to
show land owners just what Solo is and
their needs. S
He suggested that they use this to help
in their search for sites.
They do know that Packwood will see
them for three events and that the Drifting program there is cancelled.Evolution is a new program being introduced
by Solo. This is training type venue.
More to come on this program once
they have more concrete information
on it.
George announced that he has a replacement in Lacey Otis. He will still
attend some future meetings to get her
acquainted with the group and her role.
RALLY: Chris advised that the next
Rally X is next weekend at Lobster
Creek, which in down by Alsea.
2014 schedule is pending to be completed soon.
VINTAGE: Hans said that he is hopeful
that the championship structure will be
an asset to help OR & NW Regions to
interact.
There is a lot of work to be done to
retain drivers. We need new ones to
replace those retiring. As the figures
show right now, the 2014 forecast will
be low.
The question was asked as to what
draws drivers to Sovren. The answer
was: they have similar driving skills
and attitude and cars are newer and
more comparable.
Dan suggested getting together with
Sovren & share ideas.
Loud Pedal
DIRECTOR I: Absent
DIRECTOR II: Kim had good feedback
on the banquet. There were more in attendance this year than for several past
ones.
Karen provided the budget figures for
the banquet.
ROAD RACE: Terrell discussed a tire
issue rule change involving Spec Miata.
(Fast Track gives all of the info)
Bruce stated that we need to be mindful of Conference Racers who join us.
Karen said that they usually go along
with SCCA rules.
There will be more discussion on this
issue and any exceptions that we may
need to address.
The issue of our racers being able to
accumulate points for the runoffs was
discussed. He mentioned that SF Region is having a Majors invitational in
June. How can we compete to get more
points?
Bruce explained that every club gets a
Majors. We could have a festival race
which is restricted, so it would not
include all groups as a Majors does.
Karen mentioned the fact that Conference has two races on top of ours this
year.
PAST REGIONAL EXEC: Absent
ASST: REGIONAL EXEC: Absent (report via e-mail)
My Ass’t RE report: It’s all good! No,
wait, it’s all great! Terrell and I have
talked some on SM tires and subspecies (i.e., SMT or CSM). I support
Terrell’s position of following national
rules IRT tires -- we do not need to
create a sub-class of SM, so a few folks
can run Toyo’s. They’re tires for goodness sakes -- a consumable racing staple
-- and Hoosiers are accepted by (need
to check) all of the Regional sanctioning
bodies. As discussed with most folks connected
to Road Racing, Rose Cup, schedule is
still up in the air -- need to lock down
Pro3 in or out. Who’s going to do that?
We need to justify the added expense to
SCCA participants. If it’s not more track
time than a standard 2X Regional, but
it’s more money and time (taking a day
off from work), then we’re leveraging
the heck out the premium for the glory
of running in the Rose Cup. I agree

Zen and the Art of Instructing Teen Drivers

Our first Tire Rack Street Survival
(TRSS) event of 2014 takes place at

fall event scheduled for Sunday,
October 12th. Oregon Region SCCA

As Oregon’s largest group of newspapers, Pamplin Media Group is focused on providing great journalism
for our communities and state.
We believe that our newspapers give our readers essential knowledge about important issues and the
inspiration to contribute to the quality of life and economic futures of the place we call home.
But information and knowledge is not enough.
Great communities, and a great future for the people who live here requires individuals and institutions
to work together to make things better.
As a business and community leader, we pledge to work with the Portland area auto industry, other
businesses and community residents to promote the economic success of this important industry and to
participate in efforts to improve the environmental impact of vehicles in our community, and to promote
effective transportation systems and solutions.

a premium is in order, but let’s give folks more for more -- as
possible. If Pro3 bails, I’d really like to have wings & things run
group -- perhaps we can create a Formula V Challenge or Pro
FE or something. I plan on attending the RC meeting. Street Survival sanctions have been sent to National: we’ve got
2 dates for next year: March 9th and Oct 12th. I believe Dr.
Gary Chapman, from Porsche Club will be joining us as a lead
classroom instructor, which will allow me to have free range
during the event. Gary Bockman will still be lead classroom
instructor, if he’s available
REGIONAL EXEC: Bruce expressed that OR. Region is not just
Road Race. We are also Rally & Solo and as such we need to
work with those groups to help in finding sites for their events.
He will make this a priority and would like to meet with Solo
and Rally planners to see just where we might be of assistance.
He expressed thanks for his nomination and election. His
theme for the year is communication. He is willing to meet
with any group or individual to discuss issues or concerns they
might have.
He also suggests that they bring concerns to a BOD meeting.
Members are always welcome to attend and give input.
Bruce has requested that Mary and Carrie stay on as Secretary
and Treasurer. They both graciously accepted.
He also verified that having the BOD meetings on the third
Wed. of each month is still the best fit for the group.
