Board Chair
A first graduation can only happen once. Cristo Rey High School Sacramento’s
first graduating class made history this past spring, and it set the bar high – all 53
graduates were accepted to college.
Sr. Eileen Enright, RSM
President
This inaugural class is a shining example of how Cristo Rey’s unique model truly
makes us “The school that works.” The graduates accomplished a great deal, both
inside and outside the classroom, balancing academics with professional work.
These students accomplished more than their average cohorts – they left high
school with diplomas and over a thousand hours of real-world work experience.
Patrice Coyle
This historic year would not have been possible without the cooperative support
of the community. Students, families, school faculty and staff, employers, board
members, volunteers and other community members came together to invest in
Cristo Rey High School and its students.
Jeff Holden
On behalf of the Cristo Rey High School Board of Directors, I’d like to thank
everyone who devoted their time, resources and energy to this unique effort. We
value your support and know that because of all of you, there are bright futures
ahead for our first graduates, and the future graduates of Cristo Rey High School.

WHAT IS CRISTO REY?
Cristo Rey High School Sacramento is a Catholic college-preparatory, co-educational high school dedicated to
the educational advancement of low-income youth from multi-ethnic- religious and-cultural backgrounds. In
partnership with the Sisters of Mercy West Midwest Community, the California Province of the Sisters of Notre
Dame de Namur, and the California Province of the Society of Jesus, Cristo Rey embodies MERCY, GOODNESS,
AND SERVICE – transforming lives now and for the future. All students participate in a unique work-study
program where they learn professional work skills and generate income to offset the cost of their education.
CRISTO REY TODAY
Cristo Rey currently serves approximately 240 students in grades 9-12 from Sacramento, Yolo, Placer, San
Joaquin and El Dorado counties. The school is located in the south area of the city and is evenly divided by
male and female students. This year, the ethnic representation is 88% Hispanic, 4% Multi-cultural, 3% Asian,
3% Caucasian and 2% African American.
“these students
accomplished
beyond what any of
us could dream.”
Ward W. Fansler, President
WARD FANSLER
A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
A promise was made four years ago to provide a Catholic, college
preparatory education with a unique work-study component to students of
limited financial means.
Thanks to the support and efforts of so many, that promise has been kept.
To date, the greatest measure of our success is our first graduating class.
This extraordinary group of students took a chance on Cristo Rey. Four years
later, these students accomplished more than what any of us could dream:
• 100% of our 53 seniors were accepted into college.
• Almost half are attending four-year colleges, receiving nearly $2 million
in financial aid; the other half are attending local community colleges.
• 10% of our 2010 graduates are currently working part-time for their
former Work-Study employers while attending college.
The inaugural graduating class of 2010 has established an exciting
legacy at Cristo Rey, and we are thrilled to see our first alumni begin their
bright futures.
Our work is just beginning. To build on the successful momentum
of our first graduating class:
UPDATE
For the first time in its five-year history,
Cristo Rey High School will have a woman
religious serving as its President.
Sr. Eileen Enright, RSM, began her new role
on January 3, 2011. As a member of the
Sisters of Mercy, one of the co-sponsors
of Cristo Rey, Sr. Eileen brings 40 years in
church ministry and 25 years of education
experience to Cristo Rey. "I am very grateful
and enthusiastic that Cristo Rey High
School will reach new heights and legacy
status under her leadership and direction."
• We are now a school of 240 motivated, hardworking students, with the
plan to reach 400 students within four years.
• 93% of our students are in paying jobs, a significant increase from the
60% employed at the beginning of 2009.
• As of November 2010, The Mercy Goodness Service Campaign has
received more than $1.7 million in committed gifts. The purpose of
the campaign is to provide funding that will enhance scholarships and
curriculum and provide basic upgrades to our campus.
• Our religious sponsors continue to significantly invest in Cristo Rey and
to provide members of their congregations as school staff.
Cristo Rey High School’s success is a result of the ongoing dedication of our
students and their families, dedicated faculty and staff, supportive workstudy sponsors, a selfless Board of Directors, generous benefactors and our
religious sponsors. This collaboration allows us to provide college access to
students with limited options. We will continue to deliver that promise for
generations to come.
WORK-STUDY
How do you make private, college preparatory education affordable for high school students with
limited financial means? Students offset a portion of their tuition by working for Cristo Rey High
School Sacramento Work-Study, Inc., a 501(c)3 public charity.
In addition to a rigorous academic schedule, Cristo Rey students work five days a month in a
professional environment. The Work-Study program teaches students invaluable skills, lessons, and
confidence in preparation for a successful future. Students interact with adults and gain confidence
in themselves and in their abilities while working in industries as varied as law, healthcare,
construction, finance and social services. Isabella (2011) states, “I feel that working throughout
my high school years has matured me. I am so grateful from the bottom of my heart that CAL FIRE
Academy has helped me pursue my future goals.”
But it is not only the students who benefit from the Work-Study relationship. Work-Study sponsors
agree that students make a positive imprint on corporate culture. Noelle DeBortoli of Western Health
Advantage: “After unforeseen circumstances, Chris very admirably stepped up by answering phones,
taking payments and handling walk in customers for over an hour all by himself. Chris handled
himself in the most unbelievable way and refused to take any kind of extra kudos from staff."
Learning the value of work has a tremendous impact on the students. Vanessa (2011) remembers
her early days of work, “At first, I thought I was just doing tedious, time consuming tasks. However,
through all the paper cuts, broken copy machines, toner spills and other tiring work, I began to
discover that no job is too small. I learned so much working at Pacific Coast Companies. It was a very
fulfilling experience and helped me learn how to interact in the workplace. I learned not to let people
look down on me because I’m young.”
To learn how you can sponsor students at your company please call David Brown, Work-Study
Director, at 916.400.3386.

THE MERCY + GOODNESS + SERVICE
CAMPAIGN
Cristo Rey is the only college preparatory school in Sacramento exclusively for students from limited financial
means and is the perfect complement to the other outstanding catholic schools in our area. It is Cristo Rey’s
goal that the cycle of poverty that challenges our students' lives will be broken as we help them re-imagine
themselves as successful and productive leaders, who will benefit their families and our community at large.
As Cristo Rey seeks permanency, we must grow financially to meet the educational needs of our students. In
collaboration with our three sponsoring communities, Board of Directors, and Work-Study partners, we have
identified three strategic goals we must meet.
1. ENHANCE THE STUDENT EXPERIENCE
The strong curriculum will remain a core priority as Cristo Rey High School grows to an enrollment of 400
students. Cristo Rey’s overarching goal is to encourage, promote and facilitate the pursuit and completion of
post-secondary education. Cristo Rey will provide a thorough and intellectually stimulating college preparatory
high school education for all its students. We will:
• Expand the offerings of the curriculum by introducing an intensive freshmen year experience which will
provide students with an academic curriculum and professional skills training to ensure high performance
their first year.
• Dramatically increase scholarship support.
• Upgrade technology by equipping classrooms with computers that could be integrated into the classroom
experience and could assist in student training for work-study placements.
• Secure public and private-sector work-study partners to provide meaningful employment.
2. CAMPUS IMPROVEMENTS
Cristo Rey is limited by the lack of classroom space available. Funding is needed to renovate and renew
existing classrooms and add new academic spaces. Capital needs include:
• Four general purpose classrooms
• One science laboratory
• Two locker rooms/bathrooms
• Increased capacity to offer students adequate textbook resources
• Three additional passenger vans to transport students to work-study jobs
3. FINANCIAL STABILITY
Operational Needs – Cristo Rey High School seeks to create greater financial security through unrestricted
funding of operational needs. Cristo Rey must operate at its full potential as enrollment grows and the
academic program expands.
School Endowment – Financially healthy secondary schools are defined by strong, long-term strategic planning.
Endowing a portion of the school’s funding will allow for investment income to supplement the operating
budget on an ongoing basis. Endowments would support increased financial aid, teacher salaries and benefits,
and facilities management.

Carlos Perez, Senior
SENIOR PROFILE
Carlos Perez, 2011
Carlos Perez sits in his British Literature class and dissects Beowulf with the eyes of a
literary critic. His laugh is infectious and he has an easygoing nature that makes other
students gravitate to him. It is hard to believe that by his own admission, if he weren’t
attending Cristo Rey High School right now, weren’t in that classroom, he would be
“gang banging and into drugs because it’s part of my neighborhood.” Instead, Carlos
believes that Cristo Rey “takes away the pressure to behave badly and is preparing me for
my future. I am learning to break bad habits as I become more responsible.”
Carlos’ goal is to attend Sacramento State University to pursue his dream of becoming
a radiologist. He believes the academic expectations at Cristo Rey “make you stronger
than other students at other schools, and prepare you for what lies ahead.” Carlos also
appreciates the work experience he is receiving as part of his education. “I learned how
to do medical billing, and it wasn’t just busy work—it was actually learning the aspects
of having that career.” Carlos also recognizes the significance of having a working
relationship with employers. “You have to be serious at your job. If you make friends in
high places, you can have these connections for a better future.”
For Carlos, the future is the best one he can imagine. “Cristo Rey is preparing me for
my future."
ALUMNI UPDATE
Christina Solis, 2010
Christina Solis is a member of the first graduating
class of Cristo Rey High School and is now a
freshman at Sacramento State University where she
is studying Criminal Justice and learning how to
balance work, school, life and homework as a college
student. What surprises her most about this first year
of college is the fact that her campus has so many
resources and “It is not as hard as I thought it would
be my first year.”
Christina credits her high school education at Cristo
Rey as being the preparation she needed to succeed
in a college environment. “My classes during senior
year, like English, were a bit difficult for me, but I
learned a lot and they really helped me out for my
classes now.”
What is in front of Christina is the future and the
accomplishments she hopes to achieve—like “having
a successful career and buying my own house some
day.” What her high school education at Cristo Rey
provided was the opportunity to have choices, to
make decisions and to achieve goals. “I see myself
starting a new life in five years,” she says. She knows
she can have any life she chooses now.
Christina Solis, Alumni,
reflects on her first year at
college: "It's not as hard as I
thought it would be."
OUR MISSION
Cristo Rey High School Sacramento exists to provide a Catholic, college preparatory education to motivated students
with limited financial means. All students participate in a unique Work-Study program learning professional work
skills and generating income to offset the cost of their education. Our school embodies MERCY, GOODNESS, and
SERVICE – transforming lives now and for the future.
