There’s a flower for every bride
Your wedding day is the perfect time to stop and smell the roses - or
the daisies or the tulips or the hydrangea. A bride’s flower options,
from her bouquet to the centerpieces, are virtually limitless. if
you’re having a difficult time choosing the right blooms, consider the
type of bride you are. there’s a perfect flower for everyone. Here
are some suggestions depending upon your own personal style.

Silver-screen star Grace Kelly comes to mind when you
think of the classic bride: Simple, sophisticated and timeless.
She follows all the rules of wedding etiquette and she takes
tradition seriously. The classic bride's current celebrity role
model might be someone like Jessica Simpson, who walked
down the aisle carrying a bouquet of stephanotis in 2003.
White roses or stephanotis with pearl pins in the center are
the ideal flowers for the classic bride’s bouquet. The classic
woman’s bridesmaids carry cascading roses in shades that
match their dresses. Her groom and ushers sport rose and
baby’s breath boutonnières. Long-stemmed white roses
in tall vases that allow guests to see one another make for
traditional, tasteful reception centerpieces.

The Modern Bride
The Romantic Bride
This bride is up on all the hottest wedding trends, and
she’s more than happy to include them in her big day. She
is in vogue and willing to think outside the box. Debra
Messing, the “Will and Grace” star who carried a tall bouquet
of calla lilies at her wedding in 2000 to screenwriter Daniel
Zelman, is someone the modern bride can emulate. When
it comes to the bouquet, she should consider single-flower
monochromatic nosegays or calla lilies in white or a bright
color. Calla lilies in various shades - from yellow to crimson
- are ideal for the modern girl’s attendants. Her groom might
stick with the traditional rose boutonnière or simply a silk
handkerchief tucked in his front pocket, depending upon the
affair’s degree of formality. Wildflowers for centerpieces or
towering trays of cookies or another conversation piece are
key signs of a modern bride.
She wants to be a princess for a day and often wears a big
frilly dress with lots of regal details. The late Princess Diana
is her role model. The romantic bride chooses flowers that are
cascading and pastel. Consider dahlias, a baby’s breath cloud
or a nosegay in a silver or gold cone-shaped vase called a
tussy mussy. Tea roses are a great choice for the bridesmaids,
and the flower girl wears a wreath of baby’s breath in her hair.
Decorative reception flowers should be soft and demure in
color.
The Glamorous Bride
Diva is the first word that comes to mind when you hear
about the glamorous bride. Everything she does makes a
dramatic statement. And her flowers - or lack thereof - are no
different. Think Melania Knauss, who wed Donald Trump in
January 2005. She clutched rosary beads in lieu of a bouquet
as she walked down the aisle solo. A glamorous bride who
prefers to make a statement with flowers should choose
something like orchids, peonies, giant peonies, or black-magic
roses. This bride often chooses more sleek and simple flower
arrangements for her bridesmaids - if she includes them because she should be the center of attention.
The Beach Bride
This girl knows when the surf ’s up, and she wants to smell
the salt of the ocean when she says, “I do.” Beach brides
often dress in a slinky dress with little detail. Therefore, the
bouquet should be eye-catching. Mira Sorvino carried a burst
of tiny white and yellow blossoms when she got married on
the Italian island of Capri overlooking the Mediterranean.
Something like spiky blue veronica with hydrangea, white
amaryllis, sunflowers or birds of paradise can make a
statement. The groom wears linen and goes sans flowers. The
bridesmaids are more likely to have a tropical flower in their
hair than in their hands. Reception décor that features shells
in lieu of flowers make for fitting centerpieces.

Select the perfect wedding gown
Laura Rosenberg, 26, a lawyer in Philadelphia, could not stop thinking about
the very first dress she tried on when she began searching for her dream gown
shortly after her engagement last year. it was simple and strapless with a dropped
waist. But she says she couldn’t believe finding the perfect wedding dress could
be that easy, so she trekked to four more shops and tried on 25 others, only to
finally settle on her first love. the best part? it was under her budget, she says.
The truth is that finding a wedding
gown that makes you feel like a princess
does not have to be stressful. In fact, it
can be a whole lot of fun - if you know
the secrets of navigating
the sea of bridal salons,
designers and outlets.
Even better, your
dream wedding gown
does not even have to
cost a fortune. Really!
Finding the right
dress is a lot like
finding Mr. Right.
Many of the same
rules apply:
1. It’s all about
the right fit. Most
likely, you have
fantasized about
your wedding
dress from the
time you were
a little girl. But
now that you’re
actually getting
married, you
probably feel
overwhelmed
by all the
choices - and
unsure of what
looks best on
your body
type. You
should start your search by scouring
bridal magazines and Web sites for
photos of all different types of dresses.
Keep a file of all the styles that are
appealing to you, and bring those
images with you when you actually
go to a bridal salon or dress shop. Use
magazine and online sources to find
suggestions for bridal salons in your
area, but also ask friends and family for
referrals, suggest experts. Then, make
appointments with a few of them.
You can bring mom and the maid
of honor to the appointment. But do
not bring too many people because it’s
ultimately your decision. Try on various
styles to see what looks best and use
those images you pulled as a guide. You
may want to bring a pair of shoes that
are about the same height as the ones
you’d like to wear on your wedding day
but keep in mind that alterations are
done after you pick a gown. “We also
recommend that you ask the person
assisting you at the salon to select two
or three gowns that she or he thinks
would look good on you - even if they
aren’t what you had in mind,” says
Rosanna McCollough, editor-in-chief
of WeddingChannel.com, an online
wedding resource. “The staff members
work with brides and gowns every day
and have an excellent eye for what
flatters.”
2. Good manners and charm
count. The gown you select should
also reflect the formality of your
reception. If you are having an
evening reception with more than
200 guests, then you can opt for
a floor-length dress with a long
cathedral train, according to the
magazine Contemporary Bride. But
daytime or semiformal brides should
choose simpler dresses with chapel- or
sweep-length trains that are shorter.
3. It should make you feel like a
million bucks. Most people cannot
afford a custom-made Christian Dior
Haute Couture dress like the one
Melania Knauss wore when she wed
Donald Trump that was rumored to
cost $100,000 to $200,000. But that
does not mean you have to forego
designer gowns altogether. Keep an eye
out for trunk shows or sample sales held
at bridal salons in your area. An olderstyle gown or one that’s been previously
tried on at a show or sale can be just
the gem you’re looking for - and it will
cost much less, says Tanya Coulthard,
city editor at WeddingBells magazine, a
national, quarterly bridal publication.
“Consider wearing a designer
bridesmaid gown in ivory or white,
which can make a simple yet stunning
wedding dress,” says McCollough.
Simple is the key word. Avoiding lots of
beading or sequins, which require lots
of detail from seamstresses, can keep
the price of your dress down. You can
also settle for a silk blend instead of
pure silk. Making concessions and being
flexible will help you keep your budget
in check. And you can certainly consider
designer knockoffs or bridal outlets such
as David’s Bridal, which sells off-therack gowns for a few hundred dollars
instead of a few thousand.
4. Never settle for less than the
best. No matter what your budget,
you should always pay attention to
the quality of the gown. Look closely
at the dress to make sure the seams
are straight, and any beads, sequins or
details are fastened tightly. There should
be no loose threads. And the hems
- particularly after you’ve been fitted
- should stay in place even after a firm
tug. You have to walk down an aisle,
dance, and spend an entire day - one of
the most important days of your life - in
this dress. It should be durable and fit
you well.
Once you pick a dress, it has to be
ordered (unless it’s off-the-rack or a
sample). When it arrives, you will go
through three to four fittings. Schedule
your last dress fitting one week before
your wedding day. Often, because of
nerves, brides tend to lose or gain a little
bit of weight just before the big day. So
it’s important to test the fit as close to
your wedding date as possible. Plus, this
way the shop or tailor will hold your
dress until almost the last minute - and
you don’t have to worry about getting
anything on it or having your husbandto-be see it before the big day!

Wedding receptions
How can you add some personal touches to your wedding?
• Slideshows. During the reception, present a
slideshow set to music with photos of you and your spouse
from birth to present.
• Themes. Incorporate you and your spouse’s heritage
into the décor and food. Some possible wedding themes may
also stem from your favorite hobby, a season, a historical
period (such as the Roaring ‘20s or Renaissance eras), or a
fairytale theme complete with a castle-shaped wedding cake.
• Creative table numbers. Instead of using
numbers to identify tables, name your tables after phrases or
words that have special meaning to you as a couple, such as
your favorite travel spots.
• Monograms. Make your name part of the day.
For example, wedding planner Tracie Morris had a client
whose new last name started with an “M,” so the couple put
the letter “M” on top of their wedding cake and on their
cocktail napkins. They also used a video projector to project
an “M” onto the dance floor during the couple’s first dance as
husband and wife.
• Poetry. Write letters or poems to one another and
read it during the reception

Wedding photography tip sheet
A wedding photo album is something that most couples
cannot do without. After all, photos in addition to a
wedding video are the only ways to capture the exact
moments and emotions of the day. As a result, you
want quality photos from your photographer so that
you’ll have wonderful images that will last a lifetime.
There are several steps
you can take to ensure you
receive beautiful photos.
Naturally, the key is finding
a reputable photographer
who can offer the types
of shots you desire. Here
are some pointers to keep
in mind when selecting a
photographer and arranging
wedding photos.
• When interviewing
photographers, ask to see
photos from a complete
wedding. Any photographer,
even a poor one, can piece
together a portfolio of his
best work. By viewing all
the photos from a particular
wedding, or even better, the
proofs, you can get an idea if
the photographer knows his
stuff. Your best bet is to go
with a referral. If you loved
your cousin’s photographer,
book with him.
• Set aside
enough time
for photos.
Don’t book your
ceremony and
reception back to
back, otherwise
the photographer
might feel
rushed, and it will
be evident in your
photos.
• Clearly spell out the
types of photos you’d like in
your contract. If you want
photos with all your family
members, a shot with your
prized pooch or any other
particular photos, be sure to
speak up.
• Get all extras and special
services in writing. Blackand-white photography,
digital enhancements and
extra prints may cost more.
Don’t be caught off guard
when the bill arrives.
• Confirm all details a
few days before. Provide
directions to and from your
home, church and reception
site. No one wants a
photographer who is missing
in action.

For an evening wedding, the groom may
wear a tuxedo (black-tie) or tails (whitetie). Another option is the white tuxedo
jacket.
During the day, traditional formal wear is
a morning coat: a gray or charcoal tailcoat
worn with a vest or waistcoat and ascot
instead of a bow tie and cummerbund.
Technically, tuxedos should not be worn
before 6 p.m., but that “rule” no longer
holds. If the reception begins around
or after 6, it’s okay to wear a tux to a
ceremony that starts in the afternoon.

How to Plan a Wedding on a Budget
From ice sculptures to fancy stretch limos to a
wedding dress that costs more than your mortgage
payment - with all these wedding temptations, how
can you possibly stay on budget and still have the
wedding of your dreams?
- January through March - tend to provide the best deals.
Consider planning your wedding on a day other than
Saturday to save money, too: Fridays evenings and Sunday
afternoons are popular alternatives. Receptions earlier in
the day tend to be cheaper than a dinner buffet or a fivecourse sit-down dinner, so consider an afternoon tea, cocktail
reception, lunch or brunch.
Become centerpiece savvy.
Wedding experts offer the following tips to
keep your budget in-check:
Borrow what you can.
Know a friend, neighbor or family member who recently
got married? Ask to borrow their cake server, wedding slip,
veil, headpiece, centerpiece items or even wedding dress.
Factor in the season, day and time.
Avoid the busy summer wedding months or the holidays,
when prices can be 10 percent higher. Winter weddings
Use candles to spice up centerpieces, such as using
votives on top of a mirror with small accents of flowers or
balloons. Have bridesmaids use their bouquets as reception
centerpieces, and your wedding ceremony flowers can pull
double-duty, too. Or pile nicely wrapped favors in a bowl or
basket at the center of each table.
Shop the bargains.
Many Web sites, such as eBay, offer discounted new
and used party favors, ring-bearer pillows, guestbooks, etc.
Attend bridal shows to collect special savings coupons for
bargains on wedding vendors and rentals. Some stores may
offer discounts for multiple purchases - such as discounts on

spruce up your locale: Borrow plants or trees from friends, or
rent them from a florist.
Look to cheaper alternatives for invitations.
Affordable photography.
Thermography typeset is less expensive than engraved
invitations. Also be sure to watch the weight of your
invitations - from the size of the paper to all of your
enclosures - so you don’t have to double up on stamps.
Consider designing and printing invitations and programs
yourself to cut costs. You might opt for cheaper, plain-style
wedding invitations and then embellish them by adding
ribbon, lace or silk, or dried flowers, say experts.
Find a photographer who will let you keep your negatives.
That way you can avoid paying high prices for reprints or
enlargements. Hire a capable photography college student,
but evaluate the quality of the student’s work first.
Get gown savvy.
Watch the sales, and buy off the rack. Scout sample sales
where you can nab dresses for 25 to 95% off regular prices.
Flower power.
Consider using silk flowers, which often can be cheaper
than real ones and can even be reused to decorate your
home. Mix in berries, fruit or greenery fillers to create large
centerpieces or bouquets at lower costs, and use flowers that
are in-season. Try a grocery store’s flower department, which
might offer better deals than regular florists. Another way to

Ways to save
Hire your photographer for just the
ceremony and an hour at the reception.
Keep prints simple; special treatments like
sepia tones (which create an antique look),
multiple exposures, and split frames cost
more because they require more darkroom
work. A photographer who views his
work as art may charge more than a large
studio with multiple photographers that
functions like a wedding-photo factory.
Go solo -- photographers who work
with assistants generally cost more -- and
choose a package carefully. For example,
some packages may include parents’
albums, but many don’t, which means
you’ll pay an additional fee later.

Couples often face
difficult financial
decisions
Once all the decision
making with regards to their
big day has been put to rest,
couples taking the plunge
often must make financial
decisions before or shortly
after walking down the aisle.
After deciding on everything
from the guest list to music
to menus, couples may
not be in the mood to do
any more planning once
everything has been put in
place for their wedding day.
But financial planning is best
done as soon as possible.
Perhaps the best place for
you to start when discussing
finances is your respective
thoughts toward money.
Discussing your resources
and your financial goals is
imperative to establishing
a relationship where each
of you becomes more
responsible or more flexible
with your finances. It’s also
a good thing to discuss if
you’d like to combine bank
accounts, or if you’d just like
to continue on with your
own personal accounts. Joint
accounts can give you both
easy access to funds, while
also increasing the likelihood
that you’ll avoid fees, as
your joint account will
boast a higher balance and
earn more interest on the
combined savings.
Keeping your own
personal accounts can
be beneficial, too. Along
with continuing what has
become a comfort level with
respect to your own personal
finances, by keeping your
own accounts, you’re also
maintaining some level of
independence as well.
For those couples who
have already walked down
the aisle, it is important
to consider the tax
ramifications of marriage.
While the standard
deduction for married
couples filing jointly in 2004
($9,700) was equal to the
combined deductions of
two people filing separately,
filing jointly and itemizing
your tax returns could be a
great option for newlyweds,
as two people are likely
to have more deductions
than just one person
filing alone. Keep track of
any deductible expenses,
including anything from
charitable contributions to
state and local taxes. And
if you’re among the legions
of newlyweds who have
purchased a first home
together shortly after getting
married, you can also deduct
certain mortgage expenses
and your mortgage interest.
It might not be a bad idea,
either, to adjust your W-4
form at work to withhold
more from your paycheck
each week. By increasing the
amount of money withheld
from your paycheck, you can
avoid the pitfall of a big tax
bill come April 15.
Health insurance is also
a decision most newlyweds
have to make once they’ve
officially tied the knot. Since
most people are covered by
employer-sponsored plans,
combining policies can often
be a less expensive way to
go without sacrificing any
health benefits. Typically,
one policy that adds a
spouse as a dependent is less
expensive than two separate
policies with no dependents.
For instance, those who are
self-employed and paying for
their own policy will most
assuredly find it cheaper to
join their spouse’s employersponsored plan.
While health insurance is
a chief concern, newlyweds
also need to consider
whether or not life insurance
is an avenue they want to
travel down. Particularly
for newlyweds who have
recently purchased a house
together, life insurance could
be a necessity to ensure
that one spouse can still
afford to make the mortgage
payments should the other
pass away. If you already
have children, life insurance
is a necessity. Also, if either
spouse has any pre-existing
policies, they should be
updated as soon as possible
after the wedding to list the
spouse as a beneficiary.
Examining the things
you own is also something
couples need to consider,
particularly if you already
own a home. If you have
expensive jewelry, for
23
instance, increase your
homeowner’s insurance
to add extra protection.
Also, with respect to auto
insurance, oftentimes
combining policies is the
most cost-effective way
to go. Typically, insurance
companies lower premiums
with each car added onto the
policy. Many auto insurance
companies also view married
couples as safer drivers,
which also leads to lower
premiums.
Finally, the last and
perhaps most difficult
financial decision to make
is whether or not to get a
prenuptial agreement. For
many couples, prenups are
irrelevant. But for couples
who already have substantial
assets or children from a
previous marriage, a prenup
can be the best way to
protect their children and
money should they pass
away prematurely or end up
divorced.

Did you know?
Personal style and preference aren’t the
only things that dictate certain wedding day
decisions.
According to the united States Census
Bureau (uSCB), more than 2 million couples
get married each year in the united States.
In fact, a host of style guidelines exist to help brides and
grooms make the right choices on their big day. For example,
while a man might have a specific tuxedo style in mind for
his wedding day, something such as the time of the ceremony
can dictate which styles are appropriate. A morning ceremony,
for instance, typically calls for a cutaway, or morning coat,
with the ushers in matching strollers. For early afternoon
ceremonies, however, it’s typical for men in the wedding
party to wear tuxedos without tails. Grooms who really want
to wear tails should only do so for ceremonies that begin
after 4 p.m., as tails are considered too formal for ceremonies
beginning earlier in the day. When wearing tails, a white
vest and bow tie, but no cumberbund, is the traditional
style. When planning a wedding, it’s best to keep in mind
that tradition as well as personal style should dictate certain
decisions. To learn of any additional norms and traditions,
consult a wedding planner.
The average bride is a shade over 25 years of age, while
the average groom is nearly 27-years-old. In a nod to the
changing nature of society, one-third of those getting married
each year have been married before. That’s especially notable
to those who make a living providing wedding services, be it
reception halls, videographers, photographers, or others who
make their living in the wedding industry. That’s because
the average wedding budget is roughly $20,000, meaning
weddings, even for brides and grooms who have been down
the aisle before, remain a costly expense for the participants
and a lucrative venture for those in the industry. In fact, $72
billion is spent on weddings each year. To put that in better
perspective, consider that only $8 billion per year is spent on
honeymoons, meaning brides and grooms are liable to spend
nine times more on their wedding than they are on their
honeymoon. June and August remain the months of choice
for ceremonies, as more weddings occur in June and August
than any other month. However, while July is the third most
popular month to walk down the aisle, September and even
October are becoming increasingly popular according to the
Association for Wedding Professionals International.
