FRIDAY Love Where You Live ArtsPlace Benefactors Room 161 North Mill Street Our World in Pictures is collaborating with local artist, Luella Pavey, to present a hands-on exhibit showcasing the photography of the young participants in the OWIP program. We will display the photographs taken by the participants while allowing the public the opportunity to help create a mural based on the pieces. Our goals are to highlight the artistic growth of our participants and raise viewers’ awareness of the context in which these artists reside and create. ArtsPlace Gallery 5 - 7pm Gretchen and Ray Papka ArtsPlace 161 North Mill Street Gretchen and Ray Papka construct elaborate three-dimensional assemblages using mixed media with found objects. The work rides a delicate balance between rustic and sophisticated in sensibility, and transcends time with multiple layers emerging from, and receding into, luminous encaustic surfaces. In addition to conducting the Chorale in performance on Saturday evening at 8pm, Mr. Graden will lead a conducting and repertoire workshop for choir conductors and choir singers in the morning. This workshop, free to all participants will spotlight Scandinavian choral music, music accessible to church, university, high school and community choirs. The group not only created pieces, but also wrote grants to support the publication, executed the manuscript layout, designed artwork, and even sewed individual book signatures. KaBooMers will answer your questions about forming a writing group, setting goals for the group, and carrying out a publishing project. It’s a challenging world these days - creative collaboration is more important than ever! 756 North Limestone: Reconsidered Quilting Bee 1 - 3 pm Third Street Coffee Quilting Bee & Story Gathering event at Third Street Coffee, 1-3 pm, on Saturday, February 6th. Everyone is encouraged to stop by, share a story about quilts, and create a block for a community quilt. Once completed, the quilt will be fashioned into slip-covers for the furniture in the used furniture store at 756 North Limestone. Though quilting supplies will be provided for the Quilting Bee, we welcome any donations of fabric, thread, or time towards the completion of this project. Come join in the fun as an extremely large canvas is painted by all involved. The concept and composition of the work will be developed through a collaborative process involving a professional artist and the youth participants. Start by creating your puppet(s) with paper, ribbon and fabric. Make up a short video sequence for your puppet to act out and then join Charlie Campbell in filming snapshots of various postures for your puppet to produce an animation clip. Clips will be emailed to each family. Limit 1 animation short per family. LAL encourages participants to arrive promptly at 2:30pm, ready to receive instructions. A Milonga is a dance event at which the Argentine Tango is danced. Everyone is welcome to come and dance, or just watch if you like. The free event will feature traditional festival music on Chinese instruments, Beijing opera and acrobatics. Chinese dance artist, Cheryl Pan, has trained over 50 local dancers to perform. Ming Ke’s Chinese Music Group from Cincinnati will perform traditional and contemporary music for the pipa. Free tickets can be obtained in advance to reserve your seat by contacting the Kentucky Chinese American Association through the website.
