HALFEN REBEND CONNECTION HBT
System description
Halfen HBT is a reinforcement continuity system designed to provide simple and
economic connections in concrete structures. The system consists of pre-bent reinforcement bars housed in a pre-galvanised steel casing and cover.
HBT rebend connections are the result of many years of development, taking
building site requirements into account:
ù
ù
Steel casing - profile with profiled back providing a key with the adjacent
concrete and resistance to shear loads.
ù
The casing has short side returns to keep the steel well back and provide
concrete cover (see “c” in drawing below).
ù Sufficiant space to give easy access for rebending tools.
U - shaped cover made from pre-galvanised steel sheet with
ù special flanges and preformed hole to facilitate the removal
of the covering from HBT casing profile.
ù
Casing can easily be nailed to the formwork.
HALFEN Rebend connection HBT meets the requirements in the DBV-code
ù of practice “Rebending” (2003), and in DIN 1045-1.
Building authority approval is not necessary for the HBT-System.
Technical specifications:
• Material of starter bars
a) BSt 500 acc. to DIN 488
(characteristic yield strength fyk = 500 N/mm²)
b) BSt 500 NR, stainless steel grade A4 available on request
•
Bar-diameters 8 - 10 - 12 mm
•
Bending roll diameter at the rebending point: dBR = 6 x ds
•
7 different profiles to suit wall thicknesses from 8 to 23 cm.
(Special versions are available on request for thicker walls).
•
Casings available for single or double bars 14 different bar shapes in the range.
Standard length 1250 mm
*) The necessary concrete covering “c” must be observed for all steel parts remaining in the construction
joint areas.

HBT Strip - special version with polystyrene strip:
the perfect connection for precast concrete elements
Prefabricated construction needs special requirements concerning dimensional
stability and accurate building execution. The HBT - Strip offers optimum preconditions:
HBT - Strip
• non-swaying location of interior bars
• precise keeping of required lap and anchoring lengths
• especially suitable for loop connections and corbel connections
• easy removal of the strip after removal of shuttering
• no hindrances at rebending
HBT 120 - 12/20
• available on request for types 6, 7, 8, 9 of HBT double bar rebend connectors
4
The polystyrene strip has to be removed after rebending the connecting rebars.
Order example: HBT - 120 - 10/15 -Type 5 - 1250

Advantages of Screw Connection HBS
1 Labour saving
No piercing of formwork, no bending or
rebending of reinforcement.
2
1
2 Can be nailed directly
The socket bar is simply nailed onto the
formwork. A protective cap prevents
penetration of fresh concrete.
3 No joint staggering necessary
All bars can be connected in one cross
section level. Anchoring and lap length
(lü) has to conform with national
standard.
3
4
4
5
5
4 Forged version
The socket bar and the connection bar
are both made from the same material.
No connection of parts and materials
with different properties and strengths
lü
5 Standard thread
Steel constructions can be screwed onto
the socket bar, using bolts with standard
metric thread (DIN 13).
6 100 % - connection
In the thread area the screw connection
has the same bearing capacity as the bar
itself.

Dimensional tolerances: allow for tolerance due to uneven surface of the ribbed
steel: this is particularly important in types HBS-D, -DU, -DG for dimensions L, L1,
L2, x1, x2 and c. It may be necessary to have a batten or HR-foam strips on the

HBS Combi-bars are reinforcement bars with a threaded socket on one end and a
connection thread on the other end. They are most commonly used in bar extensions if, for example the work is to be carried out without the use of lap length “lu”
or where there is not enough room for bar lapping because the reinforcement is very
congested (e.g. in heavily reinforced columns).

Do not remove the thread protection cap until just before installation. Especially
where there are long periods between removing the formwork and installing the
HBS connection bars (e.g. precast concrete components), take special care that the
thread protection caps are kept in place.
3
H
3
Remove the thread protection cap from the HBS connection bar. The thread of the
socket bar must be clean and rust-free. (see above)
4
HBS-socket bars and HBS-connection bars both have the manufacturer´s code
"H".
5
Screw in connection bar to entire length of thread, hand tight. If necessary, use
screw pliers.
6
Use the torque wrench HBS 140 (Order-No. 0063.030-00001) to tighten the
connection bars to the required torque. Set the torque wrench to the HBS
bar-diameter and check the scale.

HALFEN SHEAR REINFORCEMENT HDB
System description
The task: supported slabs without enlarged column heads
Flat concrete slabs without beams and without enlarged column heads are economic
to construct and provide optimum use of space as they do not obstruct mechanical
services.
Additional benefits:
• low cost formwork,
• pipes, ducts and other services under the slab are easy to install and easy to maintain,
• in many cases it is possible to reduce storey heights.
The problem: load distribution around column head
The load concentration around the column head generally
leads to high shear stresses which require additional reinforcement to prevent punching failure.
Punching failure at
column head
Not economical:
additional floor
thickness around the
column or over the
whole slab area.
Previously, this reinforcement has been provided by using expensive design such as thick slabs or downstand beams. This
has resulted in the need for increased storey heights to accomodate services.
The solution: HALFEN shear reinforcement type HDB
One important advantage of HALFEN shear reinforcement
HDB is the virtually slip-free connection.
Tests show that for conventional flat slab shear reinforcement (bent bars, cranked bars) the permissible load is limited, because the lack of rigidity induces slip, which allows the
reinforcement to be displaced. Thus a further increase of the
Flat slab with HALFEN
shear resistance is impossible and cracks occure around the
shear reinforcement HDB column, which finally lead to failure.
in column head zone.
The excellent anchoring properties of the double studded
reinforcement limit the occurance of cracks. By this means
the HDB system allows further increasing of the shear loads
in the column area.
HALFEN HDB shear reinforcement consists of double head
anchor (BSt 500S) with swatched ends. Spacer bars, which are
welded on the anchor heads, connect the single stud head
bars to punching shear elements.
28
HALFEN SHEAR REINFORCEMENT HDB
System description
The main advantages
Simple to use
Can be adjusted later
• The insertion of the HDB-N assembly is the last operation
after laying the lower and upper reinforcement.
• Any adjustments to the positioning can be made without
difficulty at this late stage.
• Top spacer bars are galvanised, ensuring preliminary corrosion protection. They also allow easy recognition when
installed (making work easier for site managers and supervision engineers)
• The available clip bars can be easiliy fixed to the reinforcement.
• HDB shear reinforcmenet is manufactured as standard elements with 2 or 3 studded bars.
Efficient dstribution of forces
• Structurally ideal and virtually slip-free force distribution
due to double studded reinforcement.
• No penetration of shear head assembly into column
section.
• No load-bearing welds.
Clip bars can be attached at
any place on the spacer bar.
The HDB elements can easily

HALFEN SHEAR REINFORCEMENT HDB
System description
Easy to install HDB assemblies - inserted from the
top through the reinforcing
cage and located on the
upper reinforcement with
binding wire.
Galvanised clip bars can be
used where necessary to fix
the HDB assemblies.
The galvanised space bars of
the HDB elements ensure
easy identification.
Galvanised clip bar:
can be fixed at any position
on the space bar.
The HDB double studded
bar elements are installed at
the level of the bending reinforcement to give optimum
combined action.
HDB-Elements can also be
installed from the bottom. In
which case, the elements are
placed on spacers to ensure
the required concrete cover.
