Wine Guide - Bergstraße
Wine Guide Where spring starts earlier than elsewhere in Germany and 1,600 sun hours bring golden autumn days, it goes without saying that this region is home to delicious high-quality wines. Not only the classic Riesling grape variety grows on approximately 840 hectares alongside the Hessische und Badische Bergstraße – Hessian and Baden Bergstrasse, but also Weißer Burgunder (Pinot Blanc), Grauer Burgunder (Pinot Gris) and Müller-Thurgau. The grape variety Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) dominates the field of red wines. Furthermore, the Bergstrasse winegrowers offer, of course, a range of sparkling wines – from traditional bottle fermentation to Secco. This product line-up is completed by fine spirits. The Bergstrasse offers numerous wine events for all connoisseurs. In spring, the “Bergsträßer Weinfrühling” – “Bergstrasse Wine Spring” and in the second half of the year, the “Bergsträßer Weinherbst” – “Bergstrasse Wine Autumn” invite you to enjoy the diversity of wine in combination with culinary delights, either on the occasion of the famous Weinlagenwanderung – walking tour through the vineyards or during a wine tasting. And, of course, you are invited to savour Bergstrasse wine on the occasion of one of the numerous Bergstrasse wine festivals. Dachsbuckel (single vyd) Heidelberger Mannaberg Our grape varieties – the classics Riesling One of the oldest grape varieties and, there is no doubt, the noblest one. Due to its late maturity, high requirements concerning the growing region have to be met. The special climate at the Bergstrasse is a guarantee for fine, racy and elegant Riesling wines – reaching from QbA to ice wine. Grauburgunder (Ruländer) – Pinot Gris Its diversity ranges from a tangy version with a fine spirited acidity to a full-bodied and oily-flowing wine. As a mellow wine, Grauburgunder – Pinot Gris ranges from a full-bodied wine up to a noblesweet Trockenbeerenauslese (a wine made of selected dry berries). Weißburgunder – Pinot Blanc A mutation of grapes of the Burgundy family. Due to its fine spirited acidity, it ranges among Germany’s most characterful and full-bodied wines and it is also stored in oak barrels (barrique) for aging. Müller-Thurgau (Rivaner) It loves warm loess and loam soil and therefore it ripens to high quality at the sunny Bergstrasse. The fruity and mellow wines are very aromatic and often have a pleasant nutmeg note. Silvaner Rather neutral wines of mild acidity are made of Silvaner grapes. There are also rustic varieties that go along very well with hearty regional food as well as fine wines. Spätburgunder – Pinot Noir This grape, indigenous to the Burgundy, is the leading red wine variety at the Bergstrasse. The “king of red wines” is known for its powerful and characteristic wines. Dornfelder This new red grape variety stands out through its dark, fruity and full-bodied wines of mild acidity. Portugieser (Portuguese) This type of wine is an uncomplicated, fresh and smooth one which is nice to drink. Without containing too much tannic acid, it may be enjoyed in spring already. St. Laurent Saint-Laurent wines are fruity, velvety and have strong fruit flavours in the bouquet. Wines of higher quality often mature in oak barrels (barrique). 67 Weingut und Weinschänke Rebenhof Winery and wine tavern Rebenhof Bernhard Gärtner GmbH Rieslingstr. 12 64673 Zwingenberg Telefon 0 62 51 - 7 63 68 Telefax 0 62 51 - 70 40 92 www.weinschaenke-rebenhof.de [email protected] Gärtner family Vineyard area7.5 hectares 5 6 7 8 VineyardsAlsbacher Schöntal Zwingenberger Alte Burg Zwingenberger Steingeröll Auerbacher Höllberg Auerbacher Rott Grape varieties Riesling, Ehrenfelser, Kerner, Morio-Muskat, Silvaner, Müller-Thurgau, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir, St. Laurent, Portuguese, Dornfelder Hessian Bergstrasse Contact Types of maturing 40 % dry 50 % off-dry 10 % mellow Characteristics/ Residency of the German Wine Specialties Queen 2001/2002.
