grassroots organizations. Led by our volunteer members, the tour takes
visitors through this “living” national monument on an amazing journey
of discovery.

Be enchanted by the energy and charisma of renowned Taiwanese Folk Song singer
Deng Zhi Hao (邓志浩) as he leads us through an evening “In Search of
A New Mood of Happiness” (寻找幸福新心境). Be captivated by his
heavenly voice and nimble fingers on his guitar, set against a 174-year-old
temple backdrop.

Liang Huang Bao Chan (梁皇宝忏)
Liang Huang Bao Chan is a book of repentance created by
a group of revered monks for Emperor Liang Wu Di (梁武帝)
(464-549) to save his demised concubine from sufferings.
Chanting the chapters is said to show one’s filial piety to
one’s elders and parents; and love and concern for one’s
family. In addition, during chanting, devotees get to realize
one’s wrongdoings, whether knowingly or unintentionally.
The chanting of the scripture is also believed to help one
repent.

(平安清醮法会/祈安礼斗法会暨过平安桥)
Traditional Taoist rituals to thank Mazu for her blessings, seek
longevity, peace and harmony. It is also a ritual to
mark deities’ birthday celebrations.
Traditional Items and Offerings
Devotees may purchase a wide range of auspicious items
and offerings including longevity bun (寿桃), noodles
(寿面), red bunting (妈祖灯彩), candy towers (糖
塔) and others to offer to Mazu to celebrate Her Birthday.

In 1973, Thian Hock Keng was gazetted as a national
monument. After its major restoration works in 2001,
the temple received four awards, including the UNESCO
Asia-Pacific Heritage 2001 Awards for Culture Heritage
Conservation Building.

The construction of Thian Hock Keng signified the
transformation of an immigration society to one that planted
its roots. The temple, hailed to be the biggest building islandwide then, took many years of sweat and toil and heavy
financial commitments to complete. It was also deemed to
be the religious centre for the Chinese community at that
time. Today, although Thian Hock Keng is primarily a temple
with min heritage, its worshippers are not limited to min
descendants. It has transcended dialect boundaries and
worshippers are from all walks of life. It is a rare temple that
encompasses Taoism, Buddhism, Confucianism and ancestral
worship.
NEW BRIDGE RD
Thian Hock Keng was built in 1840 along Telok Ayer Street,
a bustling meeting point among min (闽) businessmen and
an important congregation point for Hokkiens. Upon the
completion of Thian Hock Keng, southbound immigrants
who had just landed or northbound immigrants heading
back to China would always stop by the temple facing the
waterfront to pray for calm waves and a safe journey.
