Arctic Safari Guide 2013
Summer sunset near Qikiqtarjuaq, Baffin Island
Welcome
Dear Fellow Adventurer,
Arctic Kingdom is excited to present our exclusive collection of safari style
expeditions throughout the Arctic designed to bring you as close to the land
as possible – all in comfort and style.
Over the past decade we’ve been exploring the arctic hemisphere throughout
the seasons, perfecting our understanding of locations, climate and wildlife
populations. We travel to regions that, aside from scientific groups and local
Inuit, have been virtually unexplored. Our itineraries, arctic experts and local
Inuit guide support, provide you with access to some of the Arctic’s most
memorable locations, all in utmost comfort. The intimate wildlife interactions,
the Arctic’s breathtaking beauty and up-close encounters with Inuit culture,
will leave you bitten by the bug of polar exploration and discovery.
Experience the rugged Arctic in all its beauty, revel in its engulfing silence,
powerful weather and the raw beauty thousands of miles removed from the
cares and concerns of the “southern” world. This is the real arctic. And we are
excited to welcome you!

Why the Arctic?
Either you love the Arctic, or you have never been there.
Come fall in love.
Wildlife Mecca
Likened to the Serengeti, the Arctic is a wildlife enthusiast’s haven. Ivory-tusked Narwhal, grinning
belugas, majestic bowhead whales, thousands of migratory birds, to name a few – the Arctic is teeming
with animals. You just need to know when and where to go.
That’s where we come in.
Our expert guides and local knowledge allow us to match ideal locations with the best time of year. The
result? The best chance to get up close and personal with Arctic wildlife.
Culturally Rich
For thousands of years, Inuit have survived and thrived in this often harsh environment. Immerse yourself
and discover the Inuit way of life.
Arctic Summer Warmth
In spring (May/June) the Arctic reawakens with blooming exotic purple saxifrage flowers and massive
migrations of birds and whales. Summer brings fine days where t-shirt clad travellers bask on sun-kissed
ice. It might drop below freezing that night, but we enjoy our Arctic summer days when we get them!

About Our Trips
Private Expeditions
Think African Safari…in the Arctic
We specialize in creating custom Arctic adventures.
Our land based trips are operated from either cabins, lodges or luxury safari style
tented camps complete with wooden floors, heaters, electricity, super comfortable
beds, goose down duvets, ample standing room, etc. – they are located on the sea
ice a safe distance from the floe edge, or on a flat expanse of pebbly beach. Many of
these locations have been used by Inuit for generations and are still used to this day.
These remote camps are ready for you upon arrival and designed to provide you with
ultimate comfort and functionality.
Our strength is accommodating all needs, no matter how big, small or
complex. Families, photographers, corporate groups, clients who value
privacy, private jets, and yachts.
Contact us with your specific requirements and let us make your Arctic
dream a reality.
Our custom built base camps vary but typically consist of a kitchen structure for
our gourmet chef to call home, and a large central meeting and dining location.
Separate washroom facilities provide a private spot to freshen up with running water,
washbasins and hot showers.
Close partnerships with local communities
Each trip begins in a local Inuit community, where we meet soap stone carvers, Inuit
throat singers or drum dancers, and learn how seal skins are made into traditional
clothing. Here you can ease into the Arctic environment welcomed by the friendly,
local community.
Arctic Kingdom local guides and elders have been travelling and living on the land
all their lives. This knowledge is built into every one of our trips. We combine this
traditional knowledge with the very latest in expedition equipment including satellite
imagery for ice and wildlife tracking, rigid polar bear proof structures and the latest
spotting scopes to ensure a safe and memorable Arctic experience.
Luxury safari-inspired camps, incredible locations, exotic wildlife, advanced technology
and the highest calibre Inuit Guides are the ingredients for a real Arctic experience.

The Arctic Kingdom Difference
Why Our Travellers Keep Coming Back
Arctic Kingdom

Arctic Kingdom
Arctic Safari Trip Categories
We have designed three distinctly different trip styles to
experience the Arctic in the best way possible.
Small Groups
By travelling in small groups of 6-10 people, passing silently by glaciers and below towering
fiords, you truly embrace the Arctic wilderness. This allows you to enjoy the Arctic at your own
pace, without the rumbling of engines and crowds of people nearby.
Utmost Comfort
Having run multi-year, multi-month expeditions, we know that being comfortable and cozy is
crucial to your experience. We define comfort as lounging on raised beds, dining on the freshest foods and relaxing in custom designed tents. This is what sets Arctic Kingdom apart from
the rest – a luxury experience in the Arctic.
Unparalleled Knowledge
We’ve aerially scouted the far reaches of the Arctic for hundreds of hours, have a decade’s
worth of wildlife expeditions under our belt, and worked with the world’s leading wildlife and
culture filmmakers. We can safely say no other company knows the Arctic better than Arctic
Kingdom.
Arctic Safaris
Get up close and personal and experience the real Arctic
with all your senses.
Designed to allow travellers to spend as much time as possible experiencing
Arctic wildlife, people and landscapes. This could be on the floe edge, in
a zodiac boat, on foot, or by snowmobile. All safaris have been carefully
researched to offer the very best of polar wildlife and scenery. We have
scouted the locations, consulted with scientists, and worked hand-in-hand
with our local Inuit guides to bring the best the Arctic has to offer to you. From
the Great Migrations of whales or terrestrial animals such as the caribou, to
diving safaris along icebergs, there is an Arctic Safari for everyone.
Expedition Cruises
Unparalleled Access
See the Arctic the way you want to see it.
From land or ship or yacht or plane. For years we have worked closely with Inuit guides and
developed lasting friendships, to bring the best of the Arctic to you. Through these friendships
we’ve gained access and knowledge of the best locations, wildlife colonies and safe passageways, passed on through generations. You’ll also make new friends, while sharing stories,
tracking wildlife and scanning the horizons for polar bears.
Continuing our philosophy of small group size and highly personalized
experiences, we have hand-picked our vessels and locations to offer
scheduled and private charters from 6 to 12 persons to provide the ultimate
in expedition cruising options. A select few 120+ passenger expedition cruises
are also available for those locations that a smaller vessel is not able to go –
i.e the North Pole! Go where you want to go, see what you want to see.
Peace of Mind
Arctic Kingdom takes your safety very seriously. For every expedition we have a thorough
Arctic Safety Plan complete with training, field support and top of the line equipment. With
a mix of traditional survival and modern technology, our staff are well prepared to handle
minor to major emergency scenarios. Our expedition leaders are highly trained professionals,
equipped with instant communication to our headquarters and local response teams.
“ We’ve been home for a few weeks now after our trip with Arctic Kingdom.
We live in a sea-side town that’s as cute as cute gets, but still, in my heart
of hearts, I’m longing for Nunavut …. That far away place, so open, so
barren, so… Inviting. I can’t wait to go back. ” Carl and Terry, Canada

Arctic Safari
Witness from the air and on the ground, one of
Canada’s greatest unknown natural spectacles – the great
spring migration the Qamanirjuaq caribou herd.
Every spring, in early May, the Qamanirjuaq caribou herd begins to
gather together and the call to reach their calving grounds drives
them northward 300miles/480km. The Qamanirjuaq caribou number
in the hundreds of thousands and are one of the healthiest herds in
Canada. The nature of the northern topography where the caribou
David Vetra
roam, from treeless taiga and tundra, to river valleys, to large lakes,
form natural corridors that the caribou follow on predictable routes
that to reach their calving grounds. It is in these corridors that Arctic
Kingdom will establish a tented base camp to fly you into and allow
for unprecedented access to this natural spectacle.
itinerary (Groups size 8 people maximum)
Day 1
Arrive in Winnipeg and transfer to your local hotel.
Day 2
Depart Winnipeg for Arviat. Arrive at approximately
noon. We will get settled in your hotel and then visit the
local wildlife office to meet with the caribou biologists.
A town tour and local Inuit cultural performance and
community dinner will round out the evening.
Day 3-5
The Qamanirjuaq herd is a healthy population of
approximately 350,000 animals that winters below
the treeline in Manitoba and Northwest Territories
and then journeys each spring north to the calving
grounds on the tundra northwest of Arviat. Working in
close partnership with the territorial caribou biologists,
who have radio-collared a number of the caribou and
our local Inuit guides, Arctic Kingdom will situate the
caribou camp close to the migration route. Guests
will experience one of the world’s most fascinating
mass migrations outside of the Serengeti up close and
personal. The Spring Caribou viewing camp will be set
up in advance of your arrival.
On a privately chartered plane, we depart Arviat early
in the morning and will land directly in camp. Before
landing in camp, we will aim to take some aerial
photographs of the caribou as they stretch from horizon
to horizon. We will have local snowmobiles in camp do
conduct daily sorties to where the caribou pass by.

Remote tented camp
• Witness thousands of caribou on their
annual migration
The goal of this camp is access to the caribou and
an experience of a lifetime. We aim to make your
Arctic experience as comfortable as possible
with all the amenities of home despite being in
some of the most remote frontier territory in the
world. Inspired by mobile safari camps, this is
a basic camp intended to be mobile to move to
where the caribou are. It should be considered as
comfortable camping – complete with dining tent,
heated sleep tents and a latrine style washroom.
Set directly on the taiga/tundra known as the
Barrenlands, with hot food prepared by your
guides, the dining/lounge tent is a place to relax
with your fellow trip members, trade stories,
look at pictures just taken that day immediately
on your laptops in a warm, dry environment.
Afterwards, retire to your spacious warm tent,
through large door ways with ample standing
room. Relax and place your head on pillows
while stretching out on the raised beds with
down-filled sleeping bags. We have perfected
the art of a remote camp with all the amenities of
home. It is your Arctic home away from home.

Arctic Safari
Fernando Garcia
itinerary (Group Size 8-12 people)
Day 0
Arrive in Ottawa and overnight in hotel of your choice.
Day 1
Depart Ottawa for Iqaluit and ultimately Pond Inlet.
This is where your journey begins. After dinner, enjoy
a cultural presentation of Inuit throat singing, drumdancing and storytelling by local elders.
Day 2
After breakfast, meet your guides on the beach (yes, there
are sand beaches in the Arctic!) and depart for the floeedge where ice meets open water. You will travel Inuit
style by qamotiq (kam-oo-tik) and snowmobile across
the sea-ice. This journey of almost 90km (3-6 hours) may
include tea-stops at historic grave sites, hanging glaciers
and an abandoned whaling station. In the late afternoon
you’ll arrive at base camp, set up just back from the ice
edge (conditions permitting.)
Day 3-6
Your camp at the floe edge will enable you to enjoy warm
spring weather and engage in a variety of activities both
on land and on ice.
The first plunge on arrival will be a check-out dive in open
water. Explore the Arctic sea floor, sea anemones, urchins,
starfish and glittering jelly fish.
Each dive will build on the previous dive experience – from
open water diving off the floe edge to ice-pack diving
where ice can be 10 feet above the surface and then shoot
down 90 feet or more, in spires resembling a reversed
cathedral tower. Witness the surreal world of blue,
turquoise juxtaposed with the black depths below. The
play of light on ice and water is a photographer’s paradise.

“The feeling of achievement of crossing land not many foreigners would have
dreamt, was palpable among the small group. The scenery spectacular and the
hazards frequent, but we still felt safe because of the expertise of Arctic Kingdom.
A trip of exploration and unknowns is rarely undertaken by modern man -- so it
has been a great thing to do and I would love to do another.”

Arctic Safari
Arctic Safari
Experience the Real Arctic
Narwhals, polar bears, glaciers, Inuit culture and
icebergs make this an unparalleled adventure.
Observe the mystical tusked Narwhal on their annual spring migration
Day 0
Depart Ottawa for Iqaluit and onto Pond Inlet
(approximately 4hrs of flying time). Your journey
begins when you arrive in Pond Inlet. After dinner,
enjoy a truly authentic cultural presentation
of Inuit throat singing, drum dancing and
storytelling by local elders. Overnight in Pond
Inlet hotel.
While enjoying warm, spring-like temperatures,
watch for narwhals, ring seals, and more than 15
species of migratory birds. During the week there
is a chance to observe polar bears in the pack
ice possibly on the prowl for seals, and we may
get lucky and see bowhead whales. Pure white
ivory gulls, king eider ducks, low flying northern
fulmars, thick-billed murres and kittiwakes are
just a few of the bird species in the area. Ice
conditions permitting, we’ll visit Bylot Island’s
nearby bird cliff sanctuary in Sirmilik National
Park.
Day 2
Day 7
After breakfast, meet your guides on the beach
(yes, there are sand beaches in the Arctic!) and
depart for the floe-edge where ice meets open
water. You will travel Inuit style by qamotiq (kamoo-tik) and snowmobile across the sea-ice. This
journey of almost 90km (3-6 hours) may include
tea-stops at historic grave sites, hanging glaciers
and an abandoned whaling station. In the late
afternoon you’ll arrive at base camp, set up just
back from the ice edge (conditions permitting.)
Return to Pond Inlet late in the afternoon, explore
the hamlet and possibly purchase soapstone
carvings or local prints. Overnight in Pond Inlet.
Arrive in Ottawa and overnight at hotel of your

Ultimate scenic and wildlife splendor
An intensely remote experience in the heart of the Arctic
among stunning scenery, Inuit culture and wildlife – land of

spectacles
• Camp directly on sea ice in an upscale safari
camp with private chef
• Kayak amongst towers of ice or even

“The best dive I’ve ever had. The scenery was inspiring. One can spend days
looking at it. This trip had some unexpected perks for me; Listening to ocean
sounds through a hydrophone, and especially diving under a frozen in iceberg.
The latter was spectacular and rates in its own class. It takes a very wide angle to

Ice islands draped with walrus, bowhead whales,
polar bears and all-night sunsets.
Observe bowhead whales spyhopping, finning, and slapping their flukes on the water
Day 0
Arrive in Ottawa and overnight in hotel of
your choice.
Day 1
Depart Ottawa for Iqaluit, the capital of Nunavut.
Change planes and arrive in Igloolik/Hall Beach the starting communities from which our journey
begins. Transfer to our waiting snowmobiles and
boats and travel out to the luxury outpost safaristyle base camp where our chef has prepared a
welcome dinner.
Day 2
We take our first visit to the floe edge – where
sea ice meets the open water. Here we familiarize
ourselves with this new environment. Wonder at
the numerous sea birds diving and swooping over
the water.
Day 3
We travel by boat far out into the Foxe Basin where
we may come upon a pair of walrus huddled on
the ice pack. We quietly watch these enormous
animals and take photographs from both the ice
and boat getting as close as our expedition leaders
and Inuit guides will allow. We enjoy a hot lunch
on the very same piece of ice as the walrus, which
are not at all concerned by our presence. On the
journey back we spot a few Bowhead whales
cruising the icy waters.
Day 4
We journey out again by boat. The bright sun
reflecting off the crystal-clear flat waters is simply
magical. We come upon four large floating islands
of ice covered with Walrus. At least a hundred
animals sit on each island. Steam rises from the
group as they sun themselves. We observe the
walrus diving for clams and repeatedly hauling
themselves out of the water and back up onto their
resting platform on the ice.

Inuit ancestors have travelled throughout the

ancient sites that were home to the Inuit in earlier
times such as Hebron (the site of an abandoned
Inuit village complete with remnants of buildings
and a restored missionary church) and Sallikuluk

The Torngat Mountains have one of the most
thriving polar bear populations in the world. Black
bears also patrol this territory – which makes this

ARCTic Safari
Designed and led by fitness professional Elizabeth Clarke, this
one week retreat will have participants seeking to connect
with the natural beauty of Baffin Island and also deepen their
awareness of their own conscious living.
We depart Ottawa at 9:00am and head north to
Qikiqtarjuaq which is on the southeastern coastline of
Baffin Island and formerly known as Broughton Island.
From Qikiqtarjuaq we board our waiting boat and travel
through the many islands and stunning coastline of Baffin
Island towards our summer base camp set outside one of
Canada’s most stunning areas - Auyuittuq National Park.
It is here, in the comfort of Arctic Kingdom’s safari-style
base camp – complete with a spa tub, that you will enjoy
the long days of the Arctic Summer and seemingly “all
night sunsets”.
Day 2 – 6
From the pebble beach base camp you will experience
the true essence of the Arctic summer. The sun’s
magnificence is a powerful force for nature as well as
humans. The timeless teachings of yoga reflect upon this
power and you will be invited each morning and evening
to spend time with Elizabeth Clarke, a yoga teacher,
saluting the sun through a yoga practice. A relaxed and
comfortable environment ensues for beginners, as well
as those experienced with yoga. The sanctuary of the
summertime Arctic may bring your body and mind to a
stillness of consciousness, a retreat from the constant
pressures of western living.
The remainder of the day will be at nature’s discretion.
Experienced and professional Inuit guides will lead you
on breathtaking hikes of vast and daunting landscapes.
It is in these calm and serene vistas where one hopes
to encounter arctic hares, fox and perhaps even a polar
bear. Birds of immense beauty soar above both land and
water waiting to be captured in your imagination. Marvel
at ancient Thule and Dorset tent rings used hundreds
or perhaps thousands of years ago while you picnic and
listen to the cultural stories of the Inuit people.
The speckled icebergs and waters of the Arctic Ocean also
beckon to be explored by kayak or dry-suit snorkeling.
Gentle Bowhead whales may chance by for a brief
connection. Arctic Char teams in the sparkling river
alongside the camp for those who wish to test their
fishing skills.
Spiritually these sights will nourish your personal
connection between nature and your being. To help
nourish the physical body, natural whole foods will be
thoughtfully prepared. All the menus have been planned
with the expert guidance of a holistic nutritionist and
executed through the skills of a professional chef. Rich in
vitamins and minerals, the natural whole food meals shall
be presented as a tool for health, a chance to rejuvenate
your bodily systems. For those who wish to broaden
their knowledge on the role nutrition plays in building,
cleansing and maintaining a strong and healthy body,
casual and educational seminars on healthy eating will
be offered each day by the nutritionist. Let Elizabeth
explain the history and natural goodness found in the
blueberries you picked that very day. (Yes! There is fresh
fruit in the Arctic!)
Impromptu pilates and stability ball exercise classes will
be offered at various times during the week - develop
your core while being energized by nature’s offerings. In
the evening, before retiring to your down-filled mattress,
enjoy the purity of the Arctic air while relaxing in the Spa.
In the hot tub reflect upon the day’s events in the warm
and mineral-rich ocean water and gaze upon the midnight
sun.

Arctic Safari
Caribou migrating photographed from the air and at eyelevel on the ground, combined with blazing autumn colours
and shimmering northern lights.
One of the greatest herds of animals outside of Africa, the
Qamanirjuaq caribou herd of over 400,000 situated on the tundra
of western Hudson Bay is the largest herd of caribou in Canada.
The annual autumn caribou migration spreads out over the
‘Barrenlands’ of Nunavut, with the reward of autumn colours of the
tundra - crimson reds, vibrant yellows and shimmering oranges as
a backdrop to caribou with full antler racks walking within meters

of you day after day. This is an experience you will never forget.
From Inuit guides who know the traditional migration corridors
of the caribou, shimmering northern lights in the evening, to the
silence of the tundra broken by passing caribou, this autumn Arctic
photography safari will surprise and delight at every step. This
uniquely Canadian safari is suitable for adventurous families as well
as the professional photographer.
itinerary (Group Size 8 persons maximum)
Day 0
Arrive in Winnipeg and transfer to your local hotel.
Day 1
Depart Winnipeg for Churchill. Transfer to your waiting
float plane for the transfer to your remote tundra
Caribou base camp. En route to camp we should get
some excellent aerial views of the migrating caribou
herd. Arrival should be around 1PM at the base camp.
Spend the day in camp, and explore the tundra with
your Inuit guides. With any luck we should have caribou
right at our doorstep!
Day 2-6
Day trips by boat or by ATV onto the tundra to locate
caribou. Caribou will be found in long ribbons crossing
rivers, lakes and large tracts of open tundra. We will use
boats to travel up the lakes and rivers that surround
the base camp to search for the caribou crossings
that day. There should be opportunities to witness
mother caribou with calves, large male caribou with
giant racks that are at their peak condition and size.
Guided by local Inuit guides who have hunted and
survived off the caribou for 1000’s of years, we can
watch as they track, and follow the caribou for the best
photography opportunities. We will also conduct
short hikes on the colourful tundra. In most cases,
the caribou are not startled by our presence and will
approach on their own out of curiosity where we are
close enough that we can listen to them breathe and
look directly into their eyes.

During your time here, we should also have a chance
of seeing muskox, arctic wolf, and arctic fox. If we are
lucky, this is also the home of black bears and we may
see one or more. Wolverines are also possible.
The prime northern lights band is at 60 degrees
latitude. The base camp, situated on the beach of a

northern lights occurrences giving us a high probability

Arrival in Winnipeg. Overnight in hotel of your
choice.
Day 1
Depart Winnipeg for Churchill. On arrival transfer
to your private charter for a 40-min flight to the
Arviat Polar Bear Cabins – your home for 5 days.
This is halfway between Churchill and Arviat on
the Hudson Bay Coast, just south of the mighty
Gellini River and right among “Polar Bear Alley.”
Here we live, observe and photograph these
great, white bears as they wait for both the river
and the Hudson Bay coast to freeze for the winter.
Day 2-4
Polar Bear observation, up-close photography,
trekking and Northern Lights. Our Inuit guides
will accompany you throughout your visit. They
have lived among polar bears for generations
and developed an intricate understanding of
how to stay safe in their presence. You will have
the freedom to trek beyond the cabin complex,
and approach bears from the ground for up
close viewing and photography. Often the bears
are friendly, in good spirits and will not approach.
At times a curious bear may come towards us,
but our guides will ensure we are always a safe
distance.

“There wasn’t a day that went by where we didn’t see a Polar Bear. These magnificent creatures, in

“We went to Nunavut to see Polar Bears, but ended up falling in love with the Tundra as well.
We ate berries that hugged the Tundra, discovered mushrooms in the middle of fields, heard
the eerie sound of whipping winds grazing the Tundra, and when the sun came out, you were
standing in a field of dazzling diamond sparkles in the snow. Nunavut is a place that takes your
heart easily. It demands respect, this unforgiving, harsh land …. And yet … it’s so incredibly
inviting, so heartbreakingly beautiful.”
