Nicola (right), now part of the
management team at Woodlands
Fitness Centre in Dronfield, has ten
half-marathons in her 2015 diary,
starting in April. Money she raises
through sponsorship will go to the
Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice.
Said Nicola: “I want to raise over
£1,000. We have a family friend who
recently lost a child and Bluebell
Wood gave them lots of support.”
Nicola took up running after first
taking part in the Dronfield 10k race.
Last year she was the first female
runner to complete the Chesterfield Half-Marathon and won a similar
event at Eyam. She also competed in the ill-fated Sheffield HalfMarathon and would have been placed fifth female if the finishing
positions had been recognised.
Nicola is, of course, half of a successful singing act with twin sister
Francine. The pair are to perform at Coal Aston Village Hall on Saturday,
March 28th. Tickets cost £5 (£3 children) and are available on 07817
063442. The evening will include a raffle and auction, with proceeds to
Bluebell Wood.

PORTS fans stopping up late to watch the recent England v
Scotland fixture from cricket’s World Cup were in for a
couple of surprises.
First of all the match provided an England victory to celebrate, then
there was the Sky Sports TV cameras picking up a St George’s Flag,
adorned with a logo of Dronfield’s Peel Monument.
The flag displayed at the Hagley Park Oval in New Zealand belongs to
Dronfield’s Tom Denton who, in addition to being a cricket fan, is also
clearly a follower of Sunderland AFC.

T’S all shaping up for a great year of live music here in Dronfield.
The Party in the Park bill is now complete, with Mud II being
confirmed to join Showaddywaddy, Rule The World and Planet Abba on
the big stage in Cliffe Park on July 11th. Now, Andy Fairweather-Low has
been signed up as the headline act at the 2015 DronFest event on
August 2nd.
Meanwhile, Dronfield Eye is organising an April 9th event at the Civic
Hall, with proceeds going to the Mayor’s Appeal. Details on page 36.

Tried and trusted
WHEN you make up your mind to give
the heart of your home a transformation, one
niggling worry might be over the tradesmen who
will carry out the work. Will they turn up when they
tell you they are going to? Will they be trustworthy?
Will they tidy up after themselves?
All those concerns are allayed when you deal with Sheffield Kitchen Interiors, the
Meadowhead-based design and installation specialists. The plumbers, electricians,
floorers and plasterers who supplement their team are all hand-picked, tried and trusted.
Indeed, when Sheffield Kitchen Interiors business owners Paul and Lisa Fish installed a
magnificent new kitchen in their own home, exactly the same people carried out
specialised tasks for them.
Explained Lisa: “We specifically hand-pick all the people we work with. They are
experienced and trusted.
“We would not let anyone go into someone else’s home on our behalf unless we would
be completely comfortable with them working in our own home... and now we are!”
When Paul and Lisa bought their home in Sheffield 6, they inherited an old-fashioned
kitchen with a mis-match of units, cubby-holes and a breakfast bar. All the wiring also
needed replacing.
Using their incredible imagination, all that was
swept away, to be replaced with a quite
stunning open-plan kitchen which is the
striking feature of their home. A wall was
removed and an RSJ installed to create space
for sweeping high-gloss painted British-made
units, sparkling quartz worktops and Bosch
appliances.
A self-cleaning Pyrolytic oven and
combination microwave are integrated into the
design and a fridge-freezer, dishwasher and
boiler are hidden away behind those glossy
doors. Extra depth was also provided to enable a free standing washing machine to be incorporated.
Units and upstands have rounded ends which, in addition to looking spectacular, also offer peace of
mind when Lisa and Paul’s three-year-old daughter is in the kitchen. No bumped heads on pointed
corners!
Curved highlights also show off the induction hob and an angled extractor fan adds a touch of the
spectacular.
In addition to transforming their own home, Paul, Lisa and their colleagues have delighted countless
other Sheffield area families with their exceptional standards of work. They pride themselves on offering
a friendly, personal service and first-class workmanship, utilising the very latest technology.
In addition to kitchens, the company can also create fantastic bedrooms and home studies - all at
affordable prices.

T
HIS month has been
relatively quiet. There was
the usual coffee morning which I actually enjoy - though
it is quite hard work, and, of
course it all adds money to the
Mayor’s Fund.
On February 22nd I was asked to
the 100th Birthday party of Mrs
Jeanne Vipan Jackson, who lives
in Meadow Grange Care Home. I
already knew some of the family,
but had never met Jeanne before.
Meeting Jeanne Vipan
What a lovely lady! We were able to
Jackson on her
have a delightful chat over a glass
100th birthday
of “bubbly”, and I had a really
enjoyable afternoon. Thank you to the family for inviting me.
This week saw our second fund-raising Indian Evening, held at The
Mint Leaf, Green Lane. It was well attended, and, as before, there
was music with Chris Firminger who was as popular as ever. The food
was also excellent and everyone had a great time.
My thanks go to Chris, his dad John, and Jonathan, to Ali and the
team at The Mint Leaf, and to all who supported the event which
made £470 for The Mayor’s Fund.
The next fund-raising evening is an evening of wine-tasting in
Gosforth Lodge, on March 31st. The tasting, which will be led by Dr
Andrew Loughran of Eckington Wines, will be followed by supper, and
tickets, price £20, will be available from the Dronfield Town Council
Office. If you can join us we will be very pleased to see you.
I am also looking forward to seeing Johnny & The Moondogs
perform again, on April 9th, in The Civic Hall. I suppose they remind
me of a long lost youth! I understand from Mike Firth of organisers
Dronfield Eye that they will be joined this time by talented young
singer/songwriter Max Restaino, plus Scuppered, a local group from
Coal Aston. Tickets, priced £10, again from the Town Council Office.
See you there!
Coun Sue Allsop, Dronfield Town Mayor
Traders’ group
full of ideas
D
RONFIELD traders are banding together to help give a
boost to local shops and services.
An ambitious new Dronfield Town Traders’ Group has been
launched with one of it plans being to stage a ‘Shop Local Week’ in
the summer when residents will be reminded of the sense of using
local shops, cafes, bars, garages, restaurants and other traders.
A suggestion was for ‘Shop Local’ to be highlighted during the
week June 27th to July 3rd, when there are galas at both Dronfield
and Coal Aston, plus the ‘Town Speaking in Flowers’ festival.
The inaugural meeting, hosted by Natascha Engel MP and
Ferndale @ The Forge, heard group members call for a rethink of
the town’s varied restricted car parking times. There was also a plea
for people to keep their eyes open for pockets of land which could
possibly be used for additional car parking.
The meeting heard that Dronfield suffers additional problems in
promoting itself as its shopping areas are spread throughout the
town, on both sides of the valley. Traders who attended - from a
wide variety of local businesses - suggested producing a map and
directory detailing where people can locate all local outlets.
The group’s second meeting is to be staged at the same venue at
6pm on Thursday, March 26th. You can register your interest by
emailing [email protected] - or just turn up on the night.

Town stitchers back
local CRY cause
T
HE time and talent of members of Dronfield’s
Sew & So’s group has raised £1,300 towards
efforts to test young people for heart problems.
Over the last year, volunteer stitchers have sold handcrafted items and raised money through other events,
including a Burn’s Night supper at The Barrack, at
Apperknowle.
The group meets weekly at the Gladys Buxton Centre, in
Oakhill Road, and since it was set up in 2006, many good
causes have benefited from members’ hard work.
A cheque was presented to Elaine Ward who, through
charity Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY), is arranging
cardiac screenings this year for at least 300 young people,
aged between 14 and 35.
A mobile unit will visit Gosforth Fields Sports Centre, on
12th July, with other sessions planned in Chesterfield and
Sheffield.
Undiagnosed heart problems cause the deaths of at least 12
apparently fit and healthy people each week in the UK. Elaine’s son,
Neil, died suddenly in 1992, aged 17, and she later went on to set up
the Neil Ward Memorial Fund.
The Sew & So’s chair, Joyce Emmens, said: “It’s a wonderful cause.
The screening in Dronfield last year detected heart problems in two

A number of other local organisations have adopted CRY as their
charity of the year.

New marathon mission
Liz Gregory is to pound the streets of London
once more, raising funds for the hospital
which has been caring for her cancer-suffering
husband, James. Deborah Wain reports
A
DRONFIELD mum is tackling her seventh London
Marathon to raise funds for the hospital which has
provided her husband with specialist cancer care.
Liz Gregory, a teaching assistant at Henry Fanshawe School, has
raised thousands of pounds taking on long-distance runs since
husband James was diagnosed with renal cancer in 2007.
She decided to ‘retire’ from marathon-running a few years ago but
recent treatment James received from Manchester’s renowned
Christie Hospital has spurred her on to again tackle the capital’s
famous run.
She said: “I’ve done it in my 20s, 30s and 40s and I’ll be 50 in
December. It’s my way of giving something back for the care James
has received and my target this time is to raise £2,500 for the
Christie.”
Surgeons removed James’ kidney during his initial treatment and
he was given the all-clear from cancer in 2012. However, he became
unwell again last year and underwent four rounds of immunotherapy
- a treatment that uses the body's own immune system to help fight
cancer - at the Christie between June and December.
Sadly, James has been told that the treatment wasn’t successful
and his cancer is incurable. He is now a patient at Weston Park
Hospital, Sheffield, and is taking oral drugs to block cancer growth.
On average, patients in his position will live for two to three years.
James, a school business manager, said: “I had to be monitored
every hour during the treatment at the Christie and the specialist
nursing team were brilliant. I never felt like a number but was treated
with a lot of dignity and humanity.”
The previous fund-raising Liz, of Barnes Avenue, undertook raised
around £5,000 for other causes including Sheffield’s Cavendish
Cancer Care charity, which provides emotional support to patients
and families through counselling and complementary therapies.
James and the couple’s children, Zack, 14, Joel, 12, and Leah, 10,
will be heading to London for Marathon day, on 26th April.

Gobsmacked!
R
ETIRED Dronfield couple
Brian and Hazel Staley
had high expectations for
the magic H2O Bathroom
Solutions could work in their home.
They’d seen other luxury jobs carried out
by the company featured in Dronfield Eye
and also had a personal recommendation.
But Brian and Hazel admit the finished
result has surpassed what they’d imagined.
How the
room used
to look
Brian said: “I’m absolutely gobsmacked
– the finish of it is far better than what I’d
expected. It’s a showpiece and our family
and friends think it’s lovely.”
Brian and Hazel moved into their dormer
bungalow in the Gosforth Valley 13 years
ago and wanted a completely new
bathroom in place of their old one, which
included a bath and a bidet.
The room has some height to the ceiling
and a skylight and, because the Staleys
chose solely a walk-in shower, the
revamp has opened up the room to great
effect.
Designer Richard Hardy has fulfilled
their request for greater storage space to
keep bathroom essentials, like shampoo
and towels, out of sight.
And there a few surprises including a
built-in laundry basket and hidden shaverpoint.
Said Hazel: “We wanted someone to
plan it all for us and that’s what Richard
did. We told him our budget and he
presented us with two options, a cheaper
one and the one we chose.”
Other useful details that have been
incorporated are a recess in the tilework
The new look
bathroom an amazing
improvement
at the back of the shower and a
demister unit in the mirror.
H2O carried out all aspects of the job,
which took about three weeks to
complete.
Summing up, Hazel said: “You can’t
fault any of the team and we'd
recommend H2O to anyone.”

Hazel is Dronfield’s
Citizen of the Year
A
LOCAL resident who took up novel-writing to raise
money for charity has been named as Dronfield Rotary
Club’s ‘Citizen of the Year’.
Hazel Helliwell, who was born one of eight children in Unstone and
moved to Dronfield aged 14, was presented with her award at a
recent meeting of the group at The Inn at Troway.
Widow Hazel, a retired secretary, has written and published seven
books, including her autobiography, since 2008. Hundreds of pounds
in proceeds of sales have gone to various local and national
charities.
Rev William Eardley, vicar of Holmesfield, who put Hazel forward
for the award, said she was well-known in the town, especially for
her warm smile.
He said Hazel found time to write despite being busy as carer for
her son Stephen.
“She is up early in the morning penning words and people have
said what a blessing her books have been,” he commented.
President Tony Bethell added: “Hazel’s story is one of faith and
perseverance and it’s in recognition of that, and her commitment to
the community of Dronfield, that we're presenting this award.”
Hazel said news of the honour had been a “tonic” and she had
been “humbled”.
As well as enjoying her writing, she said she had loved the contact
with others her charity work had given her.
“It’s been lovely getting an insight into what charities do," she said.
Hazel is donating her £100 prize to Unstone’s St Mary’s Church in
memory of her former Sunday School teacher, Roberta Barber, later
Moore.

Happy 100th, Jeanne
B
IG congratulations this month to Jeanne Vipan Jackson
who recently celebrated her 100th birthday with a party
for family and friends - and a visit from the Mayor of Dronfield,
Coun Sue Allsop.
Jeanne (seated) with some of her family
Born in Derby on February 22nd, 1915, Jeanne was a descendant of
the Vipan family of Stibbington Hall, near Peterborough. She had two
sisters and a brother who was a Squadron Leader fighter pilot in
World War II.
Jeanne, who lives at the local Meadow Grange care home, had two
daughters Gill and Hilary. Sadly, Hilary was killed in an air crash in
1971 while working as an air stewardess.
Jeanne is now a grandma to Lisa and Matthew, great-grandma to
Abbie and Luke and great-great-grandma to Ellie.
Throughout her life she has loved travelling and her passion was
Africa. Given the chance, she says she would go back there
tomorrow. She last went on safari in 2005 when she was 90!
Jeanne’s family reckon her longevity is probably down to her
enjoying a glass of gin every day!
So much to sing
about in Dronfield
D
RONFIELD can anticipate a musical feast over the
coming months.
The Jubilate Singers will perform Vivaldi’s 'Gloria' and other items in
St John’s Church on April 1st, at 7.30pm, and the Community Choir
plans to re-form for a concert on 28th June, in St John's as the finale to
the Feast of Flowers.
One of the highlights of the Churches Together in Dronfield and
District Choir’s 25-year career was a performance of Carl Jenkins’ 'The
Armed Man – a Mass for Peace' on Remembrance Sunday last year,
with a full orchestra, in commemoration of the centenary of the start of
World War One.
The Singers were joined by the Barlow Singers and members of other
churches and choirs to form the Dronfield Community Choir, totalling
over 90 singers. The event took place in the Civic Hall and £250 was
donated to the Mayor’s Charity Appeal, which includes the Royal British
Legion and SSAFA.
• If you have a passion for singing, Dronfield Singers want to hear from

Donation funds local
anti-drugs message
D
RONFIELD Junior School has received a £750 donation
to help pay for ‘Dare’ drug education courses for pupils.
The money was raised on behalf of the Drone Valley Rotary Club
by Coun Angelique Foster who has undertaken a number of
activities, including sponsored 10ks and bucket collections.
Angelique, a mum-of-two said: “The ‘Dare’ Project provides
education and training about a subject which can sometimes be
difficult for parents to address. ‘Dare’ officers do a great job of both
helping children understand the dangers of drug abuse and providing
them with the skills to resist drugs at a crucial time in their lives.”
“I’d really like to thank everyone who has supported and sponsored
the drive, I believe these courses can make a real difference to
children’s lives”
Triumph for Town
Y
OUNGSTERS from Dronfield Town FC triumphed 2-1
in the Rotary Club U12 football match against AFC
Dronfield.
Although AFC Dronfield scored the first goal early in the first half,
Dronfield Town FC levelled before half time with a penalty and then
scored the winner in the second half.
Following the game, at Gosforth Playing Fields, David Oldale
presented the 'Rotary Shield' to the winning team captain.
Dronfield Town FC will now represent the town in the district stage
on 22nd March, in Burton upon Trent.

Made to Measure
JUST a few months after moving into their thr eebedroom bungalow at Coal Aston, Andy and Alison
Richardson are well on their way with planned
renovations.
The couple’s master bedr oom, which has vie ws across the
Drone Valley to Chesterfield, was a completely blank canvas.
They asked local company Supafit to pr ovide a bespoke fitted
furniture solution which w ouldn’t only look great, but also giv e
them plenty of storage space .
Supafit had car ried out w ork at Andy and Alison’s previous
home, in Dr onfield Woodhouse, and lik e many satisfied
customers, they decided to go back. The couple are thrilled with
the latest project, which was completed in just o ver a week.
Andy said: “When you buy flat-pack furnitur e you really don’t
know what you’re getting until you open the box.
“We wanted something of good quality that will last and this has
been made to our own specific needs.”
The couple visited Supafit’ s showroom, in Wreakes Lane, and
knew immediately that luxury wood-effect Portofino cherry units
featured in one of
the displays were
just what the y
wanted.
Supafit’s Martin
Backhouse then
visited their home
and designed the
furniture across
three walls. Double hanging space in one of the units usefull y
accommodates dozens of shirts and other tops.
Andy commented: “The installation was all pr ecision stuff and
the finished job is of v ery, very good quality. I’d definitely
recommend Supafit to other people .”
Supafit Bedrooms & Kitchens, run by Martin and his wife Jayne,
has been designing, producing and fitting made-to-measur e
bedrooms for over 20 years with showrooms in Dronfield and
Sheffield.
The company has earned an extensive reputation for high quality
products and exacting customer ser vice at a competitive price.
“ We wanted something of
good quality that will last

Race day hints & tips
Planning to run a race or two this year?
Matt Sanderson from Woodlands Fitness
Centre offers some timely advice
W
ITH the hugely popular Dronfield 10k here again, I thought I
would make use of this column to add a few pointers for those
running the race - or similar events - and those with the ‘chief
supporter’ role on Sunday, 8th March.
It is well worth pointing out that we have a great race in our locality. It
has grown enormously in recent years and my experience of it has
always been how well it is organised by the Scout group and how great
the support is by the Dronfield public.
Even if you aren’t one of the ‘lucky’ ones to be racing on the day,
please turn out and give the runners a shout – it really does help!
So, in the lead-up to the race, the main tip for runners is not to do too
much – ditch the last minute ‘test’ runs and instead spend a few
minutes to plan the course in your head and think about how you are
going to pace it.
I appreciate lots will be running simply to ‘get round’ but following
these tips in Dronfield and at other events will benefit everyone on race
day, whatever your level;
Runners Race Tips!
1. Warm up for 15-20 minutes beforehand. Start with an easy run and
build the pace and add 6 x 20 second accelerations up to race pace.
Aim to finish the warm up five minutes before the race start. When
waiting to start; squat, lunge, swing your legs (careful with that one in a
big group!) and jump to keep the heart rate from falling back to resting.
2. At the gun, don’t run hard in the first mile! It is uphill in Dronfield and
while you feel superhuman because of all that adrenalin (fear!) running
through your veins, it will catch up on you!
18
dronfield
E Y E
EYE
on fitness
3. The key is to run harder on the downhill as this uses a lot less
energy than running harder uphill. Run the uphill with a tall posture,
shorter stride and relaxed shoulders – don’t force the pace!
4. Run the 2nd 5k faster than your first 5k. If you do this you will be
happy with your result, I guarantee. Very few people manage this
though most people plan to do it!
5. Learn from Woodlands’ own Nicola Gleadall who, at the 10K last
year, ran as though a crazed animal was chasing her for 9.5k and
collapsed (gracefully!) at the finish line. With a different approach to the
Huddersfield 10k in February this year, Nicola passed everyone late on
in the race and won!
Post Race
Woodlands will be on hand to offer free sports massage and also
biomechanics assessments, so if you have tight calves, sore knees,
stiff backs or just need to lay down – come over and see us! Our
marquee is on the finish line.
Inspired?
Perhaps 2016 is your year? If you want to get into great shape and
start running and work to a structured run and strength programme
give Woodlands a call.
We are ready when you are! We help new runners every year
achieve goals that were once just a distant a dream.
Stay fit & healthy.

From his initial consultation at our home in Sheffield, we were
very impressed how Chris Fields was able to interpret the
overall look and fit we required. We were invited to his studio in
Dronfield to agree to agree the overall design and to select the
materials and finishes from a wide range of quality products. We
were completely happy with Chris Fields’ management of the
complete project. Nothing was too much trouble, including the
refurbishment of some of our existing furniture in order that this
could key perfectly with the new scheme. We love our new
kitchen and we strongly recommend Chris Fields Design Ltd to
all looking for a friendly, reliable and, above all, quality service.

Eee, can yer
remember?
Retired administrator Hazel
Grainger’s memories of growing
up in Dronfield Woodhouse
inspired her to write this
poem, which we think many
readers will identify with.
O
NLY child Hazel spent lot of her time on
her grandmother’s farm in the village
and attended William Levick Primary - a
childhood she described as “care-free”.
She and her friends played in the recreation
ground and in local woods. Later, Hazel’s family
moved to a larger house in Holmesfield,
belonging to her uncle, which coincided with
her attending secondary school at Gosforth.
She commented: “Looking back, these
schools provided me with an excellent
grounding for the things that had influenced my
life. The teachers were firm but also devoted to
making you learn one way or another. The last
day at school was quite emotional, realising
that this was it and I had to find work.”
Hazel later married and
moved to Chesterfield
where she and her
husband had two children.
They now live in Barlow.
When things happened in order,
And all went to plan,
Yer mam were at ‘ome when yer came ‘ome
from school,
Yer dad followed later and laid down the rule,
A big pile o’ taters and maybe a stew,
All had to be eaten as you well knew ,
Cus those starving Biafrans had to go wi’out,
Clean that plate up or yerd get a clout,
Ee, can yer remember?
Wash day were Monday, I don’t know why,
Off came yer clothes, washed then to dry,
All had to be done even int’ rain,
It were all a bit of a pain,
A visit tut toilet were a bit of a laugh,
Yed have to go down garden path,
Around a corner, just past some nettles,
And there it was for you to settle,
Two great oles in a plank o’ wood,
In and out as fast as yer could,
Ee, can yer remember?
Us kids looked forward to t’ big Whit walk,
All from t’ village would come to talk,
We'd have new clothes and did look smart,
Little uns would sit on old Bill's cart,
Around all t’ lanes we'd sing out loud,
And follered Brass Band and felt right proud,
Back ‘ome we'd go and there to see,
Mam had best china out fer tea,
Cucumber sandwiches and a nice big cake,
It were all for show for Gran's sake,
Ee, can yer remember?
Things do change and move too fast,
Nothing seems safe as it did in t’ past,
Village shop is now an ouse,
Horses have replaced al t’ cows,
People don't gather or even talk,
Ride in their cars, don't try to walk,
Dad said Gran would turn in ‘er grave,
If she knew what I spent and didn't save,
But the kids need a mobile, a bike,
New trainers and all things they like,
But memories are precious and last forever,
Ee, can yer remember?

VERY weekday morning, I set myself four alarms (that
sounds even worse on paper) between 6:50am and
7:30am
Nine times out of ten, I get out of bed at 7:35am, then realise I don’t
have enough time, panic and rush out of the door at the last minute.
The reason? I and my fellow students really, really can’t be bothered
to get up and go to school. The stress of exams, “that” teacher that
speaks in a monotonous tone and the people who enjoy making your
life difficult aren’t much to want to get up for on some days.
However, recently, I read a book that changed my perspective
slightly. ‘I Am Malala: The Girl Who Stood Up for Education and Was
Shot by the Taliban’ is the autobiography of the Nobel Peace Prize
Winner, Malala Yousafzai.

For those that don’t know, Malala is a 17-year-old girl that alongside
her father, fights for all children to have an education. After speaking
out against the Taliban in Pakistan, she was shot on the way home
from school on 9th October, 2012. Left in a critical condition, Malala
came to the UK for urgent treatment and now lives in Birmingham.
The thing that struck me, was that in the UK, going to school is open
to everyone and it’s illegal not to go, yet, in Pakistan, if a girl went to
school, they were breaking the Taliban’s laws and risking their life.
I cannot imagine for the life of me what it must be like having the
bravery to go to school in those environments, every day. I don’t think
anyone reading this will be able to. Some of Malala’s classmates had
to beg their families to allow them to go to school as they thought girls
shouldn’t be educated. In 2015, why is this the case? How can the
country in which you were born and the chromosomes you possess
determine whether you will be able to succeed in life?
So as much as you hate getting up in a morning to go to work or
school, at least it’s not life threatening.

Recording star Andy Fairweather Low
is coming to Dronfield for the town’s
annual Charity Music Festival
O
RGANISERS of the annual Dronfield Charity
Music Festival - DronFest - have announced a
headline act who will be familiar to many.
Andy Fairweather Low was the frontman for Amen
Corner, a performer with a distinctive voice which
featured on hits including ‘(If Paradise Is) Half As
Nice’, ‘Bend Me, Shape Me’ and ‘Hello Susie’. He also
enjoyed a successful solo career, topped off with the
single ‘Wide-Eyed And Legless’.
Throughout his career, he has played with such
artists as Bob Dylan, Roger Waters, Eric Clapton,
George Harrison, Elton John, Jimi Hendrix, David
Crosby, The Band, Richard and Linda Thompson,
Dave Gilmour, The Who, BB King and Joe Cocker.
Andy Fairweather Low & The Low Riders are to
appear at DronFest on August 2nd. The event will
once again be staged on land behind the Sheffield FC
ground.
This summer’s bill is also to include Doncaster’s
award-winning duo, Rita Payne, one of the UK’s
fastest rising acts.
DronFest 2015, which is again sponsored by
Dronfield Eye, will feature approximately 18 acts on
two stages and there will be plenty for all the family to
do from toddlers to grandparents. Ticket information
will be announced shortly.
Over the years, the Festival has raised tens of
thousands of pounds for local charities and good
causes.

You don’t need a metal detector to uncover a valuable piece of gold or
silver... there could be one lurking in your cupboard or drawer. Have a
root around and if you find something interesting, helpful advice is
close at hand at D.W. Garrett
Have you had a post-Christmas declutter and found some unwanted gold, silver or
jewellery that you’d almost forgotten about? Help is at hand from Woodseats’ D.W.
Garrett, where owner David is ready to of fer expert advice and a fair price, if you
decide to sell.
All manner of items are brought in to the shop, in Woodseats, often leading to
owners walking away with an unexpected windfall. Some are objects bequeathed
following a bereavement that have been laid away.
David, who has more than 40 years experience in the business said: “It can be
years after someone has inherited an item that they call in to find out what it is and
whether it’s of any value. Often customers won’ t know where to start and this is a
good first point of contact. If items are in a specialist field and I can’ t help, I can
pass them on to specialist traders.
“It really is a case that the old tin or bag sitting in your wardrobe could possibly
contain something special and we do get ‘Antiques Roadshow’ moments here at
Garrett’s!”
David continued that although he's been in the business a long time, he still
enjoys being able to pass on good news.
"It’s welcomed at any time but, at this time of year when money can be tight, it’ s
especially appreciated,” he added.
More unusual items taken into Garrett’s recently have included a Georgian
marrow spoon, for scooping out bone marrow, a letter-opener with a horn handle
and a 1920s pedometer.
"It's amazing what finds its way to us. The oldest item brought in was a scarab
from an Egyptian tomb which had been made into a piece of 1930s jewellery!"

Jam, Jerusalem and
It’s been around for a hundred years and has
never been more diverse, with members mixing
their traditional skills and crafts with such
activities as burlesque dancing and cocktail
making. Dronfield Eye’s Deborah Wain looks at
the enduring appeal of the Women’s Institute
W
HAT do you think of when someone talks about the
Women’s Institute?
You’re apparently not alone if you imagine a group of rather strait-laced
women boiling up batches of jam and belting out hymns.
The reality, point out members, is very different and it’s not just down to
the so-called new wave of groups attracting publicity for daring photoshoots or pole-dancing classes.
The organisation has always had a campaigning role around issues that
affect women and their communities. That very much continues today,
alongside offering educational opportunities and the chance to build new
skills.
Not only that, members will tell you that fun and friendship is integral to
the movement and is perhaps what’s kept it going strong for 100 years.
The first WI was formed in 1897 in Stoney Creek, Ontario, Canada, as
a branch of the Farmer's Institute. It brought women from isolated
communities together and offered training in home economics, child care
and aspects of farming traditionally done by women, such as poultry
keeping.
In 1915, during the First World War, the WI was formed in Britain under
the auspices of the Agricultural Organisation Society to encourage
countrywomen to get involved in growing and preserving food to increase
supplies to the nation. The first branch was at Llanfair PG, on Anglesey,
North Wales.
By the end of 1917, 137 WIs had been opened, the first federation had
been created and the organisation was independent, although it still
depended on the Board of Agriculture for funding.
When the war was over, The National Federation of Women's Institutes
took over all responsibility and, at the end of 1919, the number of WIs
across the UK totalled 1,405.
Today, the Rutland Group of WIs comprises nine grassroots
organisations from areas including North Derbyshire and has a total of
around 250 members. It celebrated its own 70th anniversary last year.
Conveynor Debbie Waters, from Old Brampton WI, said, while all
groups shared a focus on “friendship and education”, no two groups are
the same.
She said: “When it comes to the WI, there is no rule of thumb, some
groups are crafty, some do a lot of community work and people’s level of
involvement varies too. For some people it’s just a monthly cuppa and a
chat but there are lots of opportunities. The WI’s Denman College, near
Oxford, runs all kinds of courses, from zumba to abseiling.
“I think the public face of it is still that its elderly fuddy-duddies making

jam but it couldn’t be further from the truth.”
So what does Debbie, who joined in 1990, find special about the WI?
“It’s the support you get. For example, if you’re not well, people gather
round and help. It’s just wonderful to part of it. It also provides a voice for
women at national level.”
Meryl Simpson, chair of Dronfield WI, which was formed in 1984, said
members had attracted a ‘Jam and Jerusalem’ label ever since the First
World War.
“Nowadays, however, we are more preoccupied with food for thought
and action on topical issues of the day, learning new skills, developing
creativity and personal development of our members,” she said.
“Membership in Derbyshire went up by three per cent in 2014 reflecting
the growing trend in women wanting to join a forward thinking, nonsectarian, non-political organisation that aims to inspire women and raise
their voices.”
Many of the original 17 women who set up the Dronfield branch are still
active members today.
Over the years members haven’t shied away from thinking and talking
about hard-hitting topics.
Added Meryl: “Thirty years ago, the issues discussed were help for drug
addicts, acid rain, world food, planning and conservation of the
countryside. Issues that we’ve discussed recently include saving our
town centres, Female Genital Mutilation, increasing organ donation and
improving the provision of midwives. These are all issues that have been
resolutions at the National Conferences.”
With so many forces competing for the time of women these days,
some local groups have fallen by the way side. However others have
sprung up and draw members not just from one geographical area.
In Rutland, for example, the long-running Foljambe group folded last
year, but another opened up in the form of Chesterfield Town WI. Since
April, its membership has grown to more than 60, across the age range
from just 22.
Founder, Karen Rogers, its president, said members, drawn from way
beyond the central Chesterfield area, were attracted by the fact it was a
new group.
She said: “It’s really taken off. I don’t think it’s where we are that
appeals to people as much as the fact that we’re new and they aren’t
coming into something that they aren’t a part of as that can be hard.
We’re passionate about the group not being cliquey and people sit with
different people each time.”
The group’s emphasis is on ‘doing’ during monthly meetings and so far
members have been involved in line dancing, cheese and wine tasting,

Seven Hills WI, in Sheffield, is longerestablished than Chesterfield Town but is
similar in that it has a younger membership
base.
The group was formed in 2009 by Lindsay
Garfitt and two of her friends and has enjoyed a
hugely successful first five years. With 135
members, it is now South Yorkshire's largest WI
group. Although members took part in a session
on how to make jam, they have enjoyed all
kinds of less traditional activities at meetings.
Lindsay, a former Dronfield Eye journalist,
said: “We never envisaged it would appeal to
such a huge range of women from all
backgrounds and lifestyles. I think Seven Hills
WI has been so popular because it offers
women the chance to be part of something very
traditional and established whilst meeting new
people and learning new skills that they might
never have done before.
“Our motto when we started was 'Less Jam
and Jerusalem; More Bellydancing and Bellinis'
and I think we have done a good job and mixing
the more traditional activities, like crafts and
cookery, with some different things, like cocktail
making, burlesque dancing and a talk from
band the Arctic Monkeys' former tour manager!”
Lindsay added that Seven Hills had been
warmly welcomed by the city’s more traditional
groups and worked closely with lots of them. In
turn, it had repaid the favour by advising new
groups.
“This year is an exciting milestone in the
national WI's history and I think I can speak for
all the members of Seven Hills WI when I say
that we are very proud to be part of such a
powerful, forward-thinking and fun
organisation," added Lindsay.
I
N 1968, Margaret Firth had not long moved to Coal Aston when she was asked by
a neighbour if she was interested in plans to start up a WI in the village.
Her response was “What’s the WI?”
She said: “I had moved from Sheffield and back then the WI was more of a country
thing, in rural areas but not towns and cities like it is now.”
Margaret, then a mum of two small sons, decided to go along to a preliminary
meeting to find out more and joined Coal Aston WI when it was later formed.
Today, aged 80, she’s the only founder member who is still involved with the group,
which has met at the Village Hall for much of its duration.
Margaret has many happy memories of time spent with her fellow WI-ers over the
last 47 years. Some of the friendships formed are still going strong.
She recalled that one highlight was when European music star Dave Berry officially
opened the group’s Christmas Fayre not long after its formation. She returned home
clutching an autographed picture. Other fond recollections include donning costumes
for the annual village feast parade. One year she was dressed as folk hero Robin
Hood and her fake moustache blew off the float en-route!
The village well-dressing, a now firmly established tradition, was first started and
made for many years by the WI.
For Margaret, belonging to the WI has not only brought a connection with other
women in her village, but from further afield.
She said: “The WI has always been very friendly and you can go to another group
and you feel as though you are among friends and there is plenty to talk about.”
Although membership numbers have reduced over time, the group continues to
have a varied programme of speakers and events.
In Holmesfield, the WI has been running for over 70 years. Like Margaret, Jean
Bown joined as a young mother. That was 1965 and she is still a member today.
Initially, Jean signed up so she could be part of a choir but got more involved and
spent three years as president. She said that in the early days, meetings were a
rather formal affair.
“The ladies were in their best bib and tucker and wore hats. Nobody wore trousers!
Over the years it became more casual.”
Jean said younger members joined who she became friends with and they had
great fun staging concerts and other events.
She said: “There was always something to prepare for.
“We once performed the can-can and I’ll always remember rehearsing at someone’s
house with the carpet rolled back. It was a riot.”

Refusing to be put off by negative comments
from a large home im provement chain,
one Woodseats man pressed on with his
ambitions for the bathroom of his
dreams... with help and encouragement
from local experts A61 Bathrooms
ANDREW Thorpe had long wanted a shower installed in
the bathroom of his terraced home at Woodseats.
When he approached a major home improvement chain
about the work, he was told his idea for the project wasn’t
possible.
Thankfully, he didn’t leave it there and called in at A61
Bathrooms, on Chesterfield Road, to speak to owner Craig
Leighton.
He explained: “I was told that I needed at least tw o solid
walls for a shower and I only had one, so I lef t it. A year
later, I was walking along Woodseats and saw A61
Bathrooms.
“I talked to Craig and he said of course I could ha ve the
work that I wanted done. Craig seems to know everything
there is to know about the business and is really easy to
work with.”
Andrew added: “The bathroom I had before had been in
for the 25 years I have lived here and it was shocking.
They were a smashing team at A61 Bathrooms and I’m very
pleased with what I have now.”
The walk-in shower has a large drencher and a body shower.
Instead of tiles on t he walls, the team installed Reef waterresistant tiling-effect panelling which is durable and easy to
keep clean, with no worries about grouting.
The work also included lowering and plastering the ceiling previously lopsided and artexed – for the installation of
spotlights.
At last Andrew has his long wished f or walk-in shower

Yes you can!!!
Another happy customer...
Even a small
space can be
transformed
THE bathroom in Geoff Knowles’ Greenhill flat wasn’t only old
and shabby, there was only a tiny amount of floor space. In
fact, the door wouldn’t fully open because it was restricted by
the bath.
A61 Bathrooms have stepped in to completely transform the
room, proving that clever design can make even a small space
work for you.
Geoff said: “I can’t tell you how bad the bathroom was before.
It had been in f or the 15 years I’ve lived here and I could
hardly turn around in it; it really needed doing.”
Geoff chose to hand the task to A61 Bathrooms because he
wanted someone to take responsibility for the whole job, rather
than just supply the bathroom furniture and other fittings.
“I talked to another company but they didn’t provide workmen
and I didn’t want to have to be ringing ‘round for plumbers and
tilers. I just wanted someone to get on and do t he work.”
Owner Craig Leighton and his team did as required and
completed the project in five days, on the last day working until
9pm.
The result not only looks good, it has r elieved the layout
problem Geoff has been putting up wit h. A curved shower
cubicle has significantly helped.
Other issues have been solved such as a stop tap to replace
one that didn’t work.
Geoff said: “Although it’s a small room, it was quite a big job.
The bath was in a hole and t he floor had to be levelled. But the
team were really good and I’m very happy with what I’ve got
now. It’s a 100 times better!”

My doggy diary seems to have a blank page on Sunday, April 12th,

We’ll be starting out

taking place in Chesterfield (September 13th) and High Peak
(September 20th). I reckon it would be a great idea for us Dronfieldarea mutts to do our bit too, so I’ll be persuading all four-legged
participants to get their owners and friends to sponsor them on my
walk.
The first to sign up to join me on April 12th is Tommy, a seven-monthold shih tzu, who I’m looking forward to meeting. Tommy - who loves

Growing
reputation
There’s a new look to Ferndale, with an
extended kitchen and larger dining area
to delight those in search of hearty, home
prepared food. Deborah Wain reports
C
AFES at some garden centres serve a welcome
purpose by offering a spot of refreshment as you wind
your way around the water features and clematis displays.
But they can be uninspiring and don’t much veer away from
traditionally-filled sandwiches and cake.
This is not the case at Ferndale Coffee Shop – in the longestablished garden centre beside Dyche Lane at Coal Aston –
where its eatery is a star in its own right.
Owner Neil Grant has recently doubled the size of the café’s
seating area and significantly invested in its kitchen so the days of
struggling to get a table due to its popularity are over.
The menu at the Ferndale Coffee Shop has been overhauled too
by new head chef Mark Bailey who previously worked at
Chatsworth House.
If you’re after a delicious home-cooked breakfast, lunch or
afternoon tea (all day) and have just an hour or an afternoon, this is
the ideal stop-off. Colleague Mike Firth and I called between
appointments around noon midweek and the place was busy.
The new seating includes a number of vintage tables and former
church pews and we settled down there. A centrepiece is a large
log burner which will add to the atmosphere on chilly days.
The café was offering three highlighted classic dishes on a winter
theme and Mike was instantly tempted by a Chicken, Leek,
Mushroom and Smokey Bacon Pie (£6.95). This was served with
buttered new potatoes and a medley of fresh vegetables.
Mike reported that the hot, flaky pastry had a hint of herby flavour
while the tender chicken breast melted in his mouth. Lovely and
tasty, all-round, he told me - and the vegetables also earned praise.
My choice was just as
colourful on the plate as
Mike’s pie. I opted for a
slice of Ferndale’s
popular home-made
Quiche (tomato) which, at
£5.65, came with a
generous salad and a
creamy coleslaw (none of
the bought stuff, you
understand). It was
delicious.
I added a side of homemade twice-cooked chips
(£2) and I will definitely
go back for more of those
as they were twice as tempting as your average fries!
Fridays and Sundays offer something extra special at Ferndale.
Fridays mean Fish and Chips with fresh fish battered in-house and,
on Sundays, you can enjoy 28-day aged, locally-sourced beef with
home-made Yorkshire pudding, creamed horseradish, rosemary
roast potatoes and fresh vegetables.
Children have their own menu too - all freshly made from scratch
so you can keep them happy and healthy.
There are plenty of special deals and events planned in the
coming months, so it's worth keeping an eye on the website at

Bikers want changes
When it comes to provisions
and facilities for cyclists,
Dronfield appears to be
lagging way behind most
other towns. But now a new
group is out to change all that
support such a campaign.
He said: “Cycling is a healthy activity for
the whole family but, at the moment, there
is very little locally to encourage people to
climb on their bikes.
“Both Sheffield and Chesterfield appear to
offer excellent provision, but here in the
middle, in Dronfield, there is nothing to
indicate where cyclists might be safer, or at
risk.”
The Dronfield group wants to hear the
views of as many local cyclists as possible.

We’re the best baa none!
Bob Brown is a dyed-in-the-wool property
expert. Now his EweMove business
is expanding into Dronfield, with a
shear determination to succeed
E
STATE and lettings agents EweMove have a spring in their
step as they expand their services into the Dronfield area.
Bob Brown launched the Sheffield part of the network from
Chesterfield Road, Woodseats, only a year ago – confident that the
team’s innovative approach would bring success.
This has proved to be the case with EweMove selling a total of more
than 200 properties, 45 within the first 14 days of going on the market.
Now, in response to requests from potential customers in the area,
the business is taking on properties in and around Dronfield.
Bob said that as well as honesty, integrity and great customer
service, clients can expect to harness the power of the company’s
extensive online reach. This is achieved through its eye-catching
branding, use of social media and attention to detail including quality
photographs.
“People love our style of marketing, which is to sell a lifestyle, and
we work together with vendors to present the best features of their
homes.
“We get results and are way ahead of where I expected us to be
after the first year. For example, in December we sold four houses in
24 hours.
“Just recently we had a property for which there were 74 viewings
in a weekend and it sold for well over the asking price within days.”
Bob anticipates that the housing market will get hotter and hotter
Team members from EweMove at Woodseats
this year with 300 first-time buyers on the business’s database.
On the lettings side, the team have been kept equally busy.
Bob, a landlord himself, points out several ways in which the
company provides over and above the traditional offering by agents.
This includes collecting rent by direct debit, doing video inventory
reports and carrying out a home check before would-be tenants are
cleared to move in. Every tenant must also have a guarantor to
ensure the landlord is protected if there are problems.
These measures mean, on average, EweMove tenants stay 44
months, compared to the national average of 21.
The company’s ewe-nique way of working netted prestigious
Times/Sunday Times 2014 awards for innovation, property
management and ‘Best Estate Agency Newcomer’.

M
ATTHEW Staves, 35, is a director of
Staves Estate Agents. He grew up in
Totley and attended King Ecgbert
School, then worked for Reeds Rains for
the next 15 years, progressing his way
up through the company to ultimately
manage both the Woodseats and Banner
Cross offices.
In 2009, Matthew opened his own
independent estate agency in Woodseats.
Staves Estate Agents has subsequently
opened a further office here in Dronfield.
Matthew lives in Norton with his wife Amy
and two young daughters, Eva and Freya, and
“on the odd occasion I find myself not at work”
enjoys spending time with his family in Graves
Park and cycling in the Peak District.
What job did you want to do when you
were growing up?
I remember wanting to be a fireman.
public
E Y E
He’s the face behind many of
the property advertising boards
throughout the Dronfield
district. Matthew Staves is put
in the hot seat with Deborah
Wain asking the questions
How did you get into estate agency?
My first experience of estate agency work was
during a two-week work experience placement
at a well-known estate agents in the city
centre at 15 years of age. This got me hooked
on the profession and I knew from that point
on that was what I wanted to do as a career.
The following summer I contacted the
manager and asked if I could work there free
of charge over the six weeks holidays to gain
experience, which I did. Once I had completed
my GCSEs I immediately started working for
an estate agency on Ecclesall Road and have
been in the industry ever since.
Estate Agents are up there with traffic
wardens when it comes to the most
hated professions. Do you think this
is fair?
No, I do not think this is at all fair and it
always surprises me that we are thought of by
some in this way.

Unfortunately, there are a very small number
of rogue estate agents out there who can give
everybody a bad name.
Any estate agent, as a minimum criteria, now
has to be registered with an approved redress
scheme and follow a strict code of practice for
both sales and lettings.
We at Staves are registered with The
Property Ombudsman as well as being
members of the Guild of Professional Estate
Agents which is a status that has been
awarded to us for providing and maintaining
the very highest standards of professionalism
and customer care.
Therefore, clients can use us with complete
confidence and peace of mind. I am also
professionally qualified in estate agency
through the National Association of Estate
Agents.
What piece of advice would you give
someone wanting to sell their house?
To give yourself the best possible chance of
selling your house, ensure that it’s presented
in its best possible light, both when the
photographs are being taken and when
potential buyers come to view.
This includes ensuring that it is clean
(particularly kitchens and bathrooms) and free
from any clutter. It sounds simple, but
presentation is so key to a successful sale.
Remember that you are selling a lifestyle and
not just bricks and mortar.
Why do you think Dronfield is such a
popular place to live?
I love the Dronfield area; it’s a fantastic town
with a pleasant village-like, community feel
to it.
Having the benefit of being situated between
Sheffield and Chesterfield, and within just
three miles of the Peak District, Dronfield
proves a very popular location.
There are excellent local amenities, with
great sports and leisure facilities and a
swimming pool which is currently benefitting
from being upgraded and improved. There is
also a weekly market held on a Thursday. The
Forge shopping centre is great for a spot of
lunch after my wife has finished browsing the
shops!
Dronfield also boasts very highly-regarded
schools with most of the infant and junior
schools rating good or outstanding in the
Ofsted reports. All in all, a great place to live
with good, friendly people!
Do you have any superstitions/lucky
charms?
No, not really. Boring I know.
What’s your perfect pub lunch?
Going for a Sunday Roast at The Peacock in
Owler Bar after a walk in the Peak District
with my wife and daughters.

Purple Sector Coaching provides coaching to individuals, through a process
that inspires them to be the best version of themselves, both personally and
in their work.
Leaders in organisations have different perceptions around what their title
means - skills, vision, power, status, a certain lifestyle perhaps. Whatever your
leadership position in the hierarchy, it can be a lonely place, with no one to
turn to. Sharing your thoughts with someone who brings no politics, has nothing
to gain and has no investment in your life or work, will enable you to ‘breathe
out’ - to think and speak openly about current issues and future choices.
