CHAIRMAN’S COLUMN
Hard to believe that summer is over, and what
a great one we’ve had. But after week upon
week of hot sunny days and still nights, the
few days running up to Coal Aston Gala
gave us some concern, with rain and wind in
the forecast.
GALA WEEKEND
We needn’t have worried, because once again
we were blessed with a stunning day which
brought the crowds out in their hundreds to
enjoy what must surely be the social highlight
of a Coal Aston year. Our Gala team excelled
themselves this year with new attractions
and stalls added to the usual favourites,
topped off with a fantastic flypast by the RAF
Spitfire. Combined with the wonderful well
dressing, and rounded off with Johnny and The
Moondogs in concert, we can look back on this
year’s Gala as arguably the best yet.
Once again, we enjoyed an excellent Gala Weekend. After
some early morning rain, the weather became very kind and
settled into a glorious day of sunshine and summer clouds. The
proceedings were formally opened by Dronfield Town Mayor, Cllr
Sue Allsop at 12:30, and the Blessing of the Well Dressing took
place at 13:45.

Throughout the afternoon there was great
activity at the numerous stalls, many of which
were raising funds for a number of local
charities. At 14:35, everything suddenly stopped
as we enjoyed another spectacular fly-past by a
Spitfire of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.
We were saddened recently to hear of the
passing of our long standing Trustee Terry
Barker, and our condolences go to his family at
this sad time. The role of Trustee is important
within the constitution of our charitable status.
Whilst not having any active involvement in
the day-to-day running of the Village Hall, the
Trustee would be called in the unlikely event
that the viability of the Village Hall became
fragile and a winding up of its affairs became
necessary. The Trustees attend our Annual
General Meeting where they are kept abreast of
all relevant matters which might affect future
viability. We may soon be obliged to appoint a
replacement trustee and would be pleased to
hear from anyone, preferably local, who might
consider taking on this important role.
To complete the weekend, on Sunday 6th July
in the Village Hall, there was an exhibition of
paintings, art works and crafts by the Royle Art
Group and Heather Vickers, together with a
display of Meccano models and photographs of

of May Pole Dancing. Visitors were also kept
entertained by the street organ, Punch & Judy,
bouncy castle, roundabout, fire engine, bowling,
and a fine display of classic cars. The afternoon
was rounded off when younger visitors keenly
participated in races, after watching the annual
Coal Aston aerodrome.

EVENTIES chart-toppers Showaddywaddy (pictured) are
to be the headline act at next summer’s Dronfield Party
in the Park.
With no fewer than 23 hit singles under their belts, plus 15 massive
selling albums and more than 50 appearances on Top of the Pops, the
Leicester-based outfit delighted in putting fun into the charts.
Their string of hits included ‘Under The Moon of Love’, ‘When’, ‘You
Got What It Takes’, ‘Three Steps To Heaven’, ‘Pretty Little Angel Eyes’,
‘Hey Rock & Roll’, ‘I Wonder Why’ and ‘A Little Bit of Soap’.
They remain a hugely popular act with their colourful live show and
perform the world over. Now, well into the 21st Century, the demand
for this legendary band is every bit as strong, serving as a testament
to their outstanding reputation as live artists.
The Saturday, July 11th, bill is also set to include Christie - famed for
their early 1970s recordings ‘Yellow River’ and ‘San Bernadino’ - plus,

Home happiness three times over
IT’S a case of thrice as nice with the latest
project from Sheffield Kitchen Interiors. For
Sue and Bob Highton’s new bedroom is the
third room transformed by the team!
The couple, from Fox Hill, began with a new kitchen two years ago to
accommodate their large family who gather each week for Sunday lunch.
So happy were the Hightons with the finished result, that they then
asked the Sheffield Kitchen Interiors team to revamp two of their three
bedrooms.
The first, a small guest bedroom, has been transformed into an
exciting studio space for the couple’s four grandsons when they stay
over. It has fitted wardrobes and shelving across the entire length of a
wall which provide plenty of space for Sue’s clothes.
In the second, larger bedroom, the team fitted new doors to two
original built-in closets and also created new shelves inside.
Sue is thrilled with what’s been achieved through owner Paul Fish’s
expert designs - in fact so much so that she plans to have Sheffield
Kitchen Interiors return to work their magic on her third bedroom.
Said Sue: “From the very start to the end of each job, Sheffield
Kitchen Interiors are brilliant. They involve you in the project all along
the way which was definitely not the case with the first kitchen we had
done in the house by another company some while ago. With that it
was ‘you’ve ordered it, that’s what you’re getting.’

HIS past month John and I have been on our main
holiday, a river cruise, with friends, on the River Danube.
Starting in Vienna, we went upstream as far as Passau, in
Germany, and then downstream to Budapest, in Hungary, making
several stops and excursions along the way. We then had a
further three days to explore Budapest, which turned out to be a
lovely city.
We walked miles, but had a wonderful time and where else can you
hold hands with Ronald Reagan? However, I can tell you, that the
Danube is definitely not blue!
Monday the 29th saw a highly successful “Indian Night”, held in
support of The Mayor’s Charity Fund, at The Mint Leaf Restaurant
Green Lane. My thanks go to Ali and his staff for all the trouble they
took over the menu. The food was, as usual, delicious.
Entertainment was supplied by Chris Firminger and friends who hit
just the right note, forgive the pun, with the music, so a big “thank you”
to them.
Everyone seemed to have a great time, and my thanks go to all those
who supported the event. Hopefully we will have a similar evening, at
The Mint Leaf, in the spring.
Meanwhile, there seems to be a definite “back-endish” feel, as my
grandma would say, to the mornings, and I suspect autumn is upon us,
in spite of the mild days we have been enjoying.
Of course, November will soon be here, and in this centenary year,
Remembrance Day will have special significance. I will be starting the
local Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal on October 25th and I hope
you will give your support, remembering that, for many, this is not
something which happens once a year, but is something that is part of
every day.

Trevor’s Vietnam mission
Facing a 470km
cycle ride in
tropical
surroundings is

Trevor Back
D
RONFIELD man Trevor Back is taking on a 470km cycling
challenge from Vietnam to Cambodia to raise funds for
the Alzheimer's Society.
Trevor will pedal from Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam to Angkor Wat in
Cambodia in tropical heat in February. He is self-financing the trip and
hopes to raise over £1,800.
Trevor explained: ‘I decided to take part after taking early retirement, at
60, after 37 years working as a social worker, 35 of those for Sheffield
City Council and the last 23 years as a mental health social worker. In
my work I came across people with dementia and saw the massive
impact on them and their families.”
In addition, the charity helped to support Trevor’s own family when his
father developed the disease during the final six years of his life.
Trevor continued: “I remember the distress I experienced the first time
he didn’t recognise me or know that he even had a son. As his condition
progressed, he didn’t appear to remember anything beyond his
childhood. He eventually had to live in a nursing home. He needed a lot
of personal care and didn’t appear to have any understanding of what
was going on around him. He could become disinhibited, volatile and
unpredictable. He was a Second World War veteran, a dignified man
and in his twilight years Alzheimer’s robbed him of his dignity.
“It’s great to think that I will be raising funds to help support people to
live well with dementia today and fund research to find a cure for
tomorrow.’
Jeremy Hughes, chief executive at the Alzheimer’s Society, said: “We
are delighted that Trevor is giving his time to support Alzheimer’s
Society. One in three people over 65 will die with dementia. It is more
than just memory loss; it robs people of their lives and has a devastating
impact on families and loved ones.”

LOCAL cricket club has
space to grow thanks to
£5,500 of funding from a
community grants scheme.
A
Hundall Cricket Club has two
senior teams and several junior
squads using its facilities at
Windmill Lane. It successfully
applied to Viridor Credits Environmental Company in order
to extend the club’s pavilion to store kit and to build a new
club garage.
The work was completed earlier this year and chairman,
Neil Vaughan, said the project was already making a huge
difference to the club, which takes players from the age of
five.
He said: “We’re a thriving cricket club with some good
players coming through the system and we really want to
build on that. Parents are realising that, like rugby, the

game has standards and is played
in the right spirit.
“We’re really pleased to have got
this funding. It’s greatly improved
facilities and will help us to attract
more players in the future.”
Other improvements at the club
over recent years include groundlevelling work, top quality covers to protect the wicket and
international-class nets, paid for by Sport England.
Viridor Credits Environmental Company, an independent
charity, was established in 2001 to distribute funding to
projects around Viridor’s sites via the Landfill Communities
Fund.

ARLIAMENT was recalled for a special sitting to decide on whether we should
go to war in the Middle East.
Whether or not to commit ourselves to military action is the hardest decision an
MP has to make because innocent lives will be lost, whether we get involved or not.
When Parliament was recalled last summer for a vote on whether we should intervene
in Syria, I voted against it. I was deeply concerned about who we were arming and who
we were fighting in Syria. Just because Assad is a monstrous dictator does not make his
enemies into our friends.
The events in Syria since that vote demonstrated that we did the right thing not
intervening that time. But I think over the last months, things changed. The emergence of
Islamic State (ISL) which has morphed out of al-Qaeda with added horrors, the pictures
of beheadings, the hostage-taking of aid workers, the brutal murder of men and male
children, the capture and enslavement of women and children, all these have changed
the way that people in this country feel about Iraq, Syria and the wider Middle East.
The shock of hearing the Jihadis speaking with English accents drove home to many
people that this is not only about foreign affairs. It is very much a domestic problem too.
So when the Government set out its case for responding to a call for help from the Iraqi
government for air power, I voted for it. I don’t think air strikes alone will solve the

problem that ISL presents us with but I think it is important that we take part in trying to
vote for the least bad option’
address ISL as a real threat to us and our way of life.
ISL has perverted the cause of Islam. It is not Islamic. It is terrorist. It is important that we in the West do not mistake
their actions and blame a religion which is historically peace-loving.
As many people said during the debate last week, terrorism is an ideology that must be defeated through education
and persuasion. At the same time as engaging militarily, we must engage equally with our communities from which
young men and women are being inspired to join ISL. We must address their disaffection and their alienation and
understand why they are turning against peaceful and democratic solutions in favour of barbarism and extreme,
sometimes suicidal, violence.
Dealing with ISL and the consequences of engaging in military action will last for many years. I wish we were not in this
position, that ISL did not exist, that there were peace in the Middle East, but I don’t think we can turn away from something
as important as this.
As awful as it is to vote for war, I think on this occasion it was a vote for the least bad option and the only chance of
finding a long-term solution as long as it goes hand-in-hand with education and support, both in the areas where we are
engaged abroad as well as here at home.

away from home a great deal over the last
11 years and, because of this, has spent
lots of time in hotel rooms around the world.
Some of the impressive high-tech designs he has
encountered, especially when it comes to lighting, have fed
in to what he wanted for the new-look bathroom at his own
home in Chesterfield.
Marc has lived in the two-bedroom canalside flat for nine
years and is now on his third bathroom. This time, as part of
a refurbishment of the entire place, he specifically wanted a
bespoke design and a walk-in shower.

sister, who lives in the Peak District.

you go into the bathroom during the night,” added Marc.

A
DRONFIELD schoolboy’s cool performances on the ice hockey rink have led to him representing his
country at an international tournament in Canada.
Eleven-year-old Alex Graham, a pupil at Henry Fanshawe School, will be the youngest player in the England
Under-13s ice hockey squad when they line up for the International Pee Wee Tournament, in Quebec, in February.
Alex was first gripped by the high-action sport when he was taken to a
game by parents Sara and Alan at the tender age of three and went on to
pick up his first stick not long afterwards.
The news that he had been picked to play for England was reward for his
years of dedicated training but Alex loves every minute on the ice.
He said: “It’s part of my life. If I could be anywhere, I would choose the ice
rink. I’d rather be there than on holiday. I love playing, scoring and winning.”
Alex, a forward, has played for two Sheffield junior teams - the Samurai
and Lasers - but now is a member of the Bradford Bulldogs. Over the years
he has won dozens of trophies and medals. His aim is to eventually play for
Great Britain.
Dad Alan, who himself played ice hockey while growing up in Scotland,
said: “Ever since we took Alex to see the Sheffield Steelers play when he
was three, he's been involved in the sport. He’s set himself targets and gone
on to make them. He’s done extremely well and we’re very proud of him.”
Alex will spend two weeks in Canada, staying with a local family.
Temperatures will drop to minus-20 during his stay and he will experience
skating on an outdoor pond.
Ice hockey isnt Alex’s only sporting interest. He is adept on wheels as well
as on ice and is a member of roller hockey team, Killamarsh Khaos, as well
as playing for Dronfield Rugby Union Under-12s and sailing with his family.
The Grahams have appealed for any local businesses who might be

RONFIELD Light Opera Group, which has been
producing live theatre in the town for more than 40 years,
is to change its name – but every other aspect of its
operation remains the same.

Chairman Alan Powell said: “We have decided to change the name to
Dronfield Musical Theatre Group to more accurately describe what we
do. We have found that people find the term ‘Light Opera’ difficult to
define, and because everything we do in now described as musical
theatre, we decided it would be sensible to change.
“But it won’t make any difference to what we actually do. We will still
be producing three shows a year – in May, October and a pantomime
in January. The group’s latest production is The Card, a musical
comedy based on a novel of the same name by Arnold Bennett.
It is set in one of the five towns in The Potteries and was recently reworked for a successful season in the Open Air Theatre in London’s
Regents Park.
The Card is a lively tale of a young entrepreneur, the son of a washerwoman, who through enterprise and roguish skill becomes mayor of his
home town. The show has lots of fun and humour and has a bundle of
catchy songs, says producer Gavin Ward. Opening night is Wednesday,
October 22nd, and it continues to Saturday, October 25th, at 7.30 with
a Saturday matinee at 2.30pm. Tickets: 01246 416364.

NERGETIC young streetdancers, many from Dronfield, put
in top performances in a contest for youngsters from
across the world.
Two crews and a duo trained by choreographers from Dronfield-based
Dancedaze triumphed in their categories in the United Dance
Organisation World Championships, in Glasgow. Other teams, duos
and soloists also did well.
Rich Hawke, owner of Dancedaze, said he was delighted with the
successes notched up by the talented youngsters who qualified for the
championships through regional events held throughout the year.
He said: “There were over 30 different countries represented over the
weekend and so the dancers did really well, and it’s credit to their hard
work and that of the choreographers who work for me.”
The group ‘Dark Cloud’ won the under-10s beginners/novice category
while ‘RJ Juniors’ won the under-14s novice section. Fourteen-yearolds Isobel Elston and Ellie-Rose Pickering, from Dronfield, won the
under-14s novice duo category. ‘The Business’ was fourth in the under14s advanced category and under-14s intermediate crew entrants
‘Rhythmic Jokers’ placed seventh.

Chris worked from plans, accommodated the client’s requirements

possible. Chris also produced detailed hand-drawn working plans,
complete with wiring and plumbing details for the builder and other
tradesmen and was always available for site meetings.
Explained a delighted Samir: “We were very impressed with the
inventive ideas and design skills of Chris Fields.
“He gave us a complete alternative design to the others, a design
Colette instantly fell in love with. It was a superb design, featuring
quality materials and superb installation - all within budget,”
Colette added: “I thought my dream kitchen with an island was
impossible but Chris designed exactly what was in my mind’s eye.”
Samir explained that Chris had been very accommodating with ideas
and advise outside his remit, for example his ideas for lighting were
invaluable and fully complemented the complete kitchen extension.

A
DRONFIELD woman who saved her
husband’s life by giving him a kidney is
staging her latest fund-raiser.
Tracey Fisher was found to be a transplant match for
husband Douglas and the couple underwent the
procedure in 2011. The experience itself, along with the
people Tracey met through the surgery, have inspired
her to so far raise more than £12,000 for the British
Kidney Patient Association through her campaign ‘My
Little Kidney Bean’.
Her next event will be a family fun day at Hill Top
Club, on 9th November, with all profits to the charity.
Tracey said: “Like other people, I was blissfully
unaware what it was like to have someone close who
is seriously ill. It’s been emotional and I want to help
other people in the same situation where I can.”
Douglas, a diabetic, had been ill for a number of
years and needed dialysis for renal failure when Tracey
was identified as a suitable donor.
Although Douglas still has some health problems, his

for pupils and staff!
UPILS at Henry Fanshawe School are making the most of
a new fitness trail for use in PE classes and between
lessons.
A total of 18 pieces of kit were installed at the school over the
summer holiday on land next to the sports hall.
Staff believe the school is the only one in the area to boast such a
facility, which cost £20,000 and offers a mix of cardio and muscular
exercise aimed at both students and staff.
Assistant head Kevin Pickles said: “This is something the school has
wanted to establish for a number of years. From the first day of the
new term, it's proved extremely popular with the children and there's
always someone using it.
“Healthy children do better in school. We hope the equipment will
encourage pupils to exercise more now and develop good practices for
the future.”

RONFIELD First Responders remembered two very special people in a presentation
ceremony at Coal Aston Village Hall.
An award, in memory of co-ordinator Mike Emmens who died at the beginning of the year, was
presented to the family of George Stephenson to recognise the outstanding work he did for the scheme before he
too sadly died.
Although living in Totley, George was a Dronfield Community First Responder for five years. He first volunteered
for the scheme after completing a first aid course through work.
Explained Joyce Emmens: “The award is to recognise Responders who have done something above and
beyond the norm. To come over from Totley every week to volunteer his time supporting people in our area was
terrific.”
Joyce presented the award to George’s proud widow Yasmin and son Peter.
Warning over PC
access scam
A
LOCAL computer expert has warned people to be on
their guard against cyber scammers.
Andrew Wardell, owner of Start2finish in Dronfield, is taking
up to 30 enquiries every week from people who fear they have been
targetted by criminals trying to gain access to their PC.
He reports a few cases each week when people have fallen victim
to the scam, requiring action to be taken to fix their computer.
Said Andrew: “I want to people to be aware of this scam and
prevent them from falling for it. The scammers trick people into
paying ‘support’ charges by running a fake site that offers anti-virus
downloads intentionally failing on installation and telling the user to
call the scammers.
“The fake tech support convinces victims that their machines have
a virus infection, install the software and charge annual fees. This
kind of scam has already cost victims millions of dollars around the
world.”
Andrew added that the criminals fraudulently use the names of
well-known companies like Microsoft and will also try to access
personal details and bank account information.
Andrew said internet users should be suspicous when ‘cold-called’.
“No reputable business should be ringing you up out of the blue
and asking for remote access to your PC,” he commented.

Imagine getting to grips with this monster-sized
squash grown by great-grandfather Billy Cobb at his
Dronfield allotment. Billy, aged 83, produced two giant
pumpkins from seed and says he could almost see them
growing before his eyes!
Billy has donated the pumpkins for 'guess the weight'
competitions to raise funds for Ashgate Hospice and
Sheffield Children's Hospital. The bigger of the two is
currently at Dunston Nurseries. Ashgate Hospice staff will

reveal the weight around Hallowe’en.
Billy, who has had an allotment at Snape Hill for almost
half-a-century, said he had been growing pumpkins for
eight years but this year's crop has been his best yet.
He said: "It amazed me how the larger of the two just
kept getting bigger and bigger. They have had lots of
water every day as well as sugar water. I'm hoping to
grow an even bigger pumpkin next year."

“The Armed Man”. The initiative came from members
of the Jubilaté Singers, who took up the idea
enthusiastically, soon to be joined by the Barlow Singers,
and members of other choirs.
The piece covers many texts relating to war and peace, from the
medieval to Hiroshima, Christian, Islam and Indian, and yet is as
relevant to the horrors and loss of 1914-18 as it is to World War II
and all subsequent wars, and in remembering the centenary of
the beginning of “The War to end all Wars” we must not forget
that it is also 75 years since the start of World War II.

HIS past month, the biggest topic on everybody’s minds
has been the Scottish Referendum. As I write this,
early this morning, the results were announced –
45% voted ‘’yes’ and 55% ‘no’, meaning Scotland will stay in
the UK.

Obviously, the vote was not a common occurrence; Scotland and
England have been united for 307 years and breaking the union would
have had many consequences, both positive and negative.
Another thing that made the vote unique was the fact that 16 and
17-year-olds were able to vote, compared to 18 in the General
Election, after the Scottish government legalised it for the
event.
Danny Alexander, Senior Lib Dem minister and Scottish MP,
commented that some of the best debates and discussions (about the
Scottish Referendum) had been with young people in schools and at
debates.
More than 100,000 Scottish 16-17-year-olds registered to vote
in the referendum, showing that many young people do care about
how their country is run for their future and know their vote
matters.
This contradicts one of the main arguments for not allowing under18s to vote; during the last election, fewer than half of 18-24-year-olds
voted, creating the impression that young people don’t care about
politics and lowering the voting age would be pointless.
Currently, for a General Election, the voting age stands at 18.
David Cameron and the Conservatives (along with UKIP) agree that
anybody under this age should not be allowed to vote. However,
the Lib Dems and Labour leader, Ed Miliband, along with a number
of other parties, believe 16 and 17-year-olds should be allowed to
vote.
Many in favour of voting from the age of 16 argue that most rely
on Government-funded public transport and schools but have no
influence over the policies that affect these. It also encourages
young people to be part of society and acknowledge their
responsibility.
Society accepts that 16-year-olds can make rational, important
decisions and in the UK it is possible to join the Army, pay tax, work full
time (currently) and make other decisions that could essentially change
a person’s life. So why not vote? Surely, politics affects their lives,
every single day.

For now, it is highly unlikely that the General Election voting age will
decrease in the UK, however, with the debate continuing, perhaps one
day, 16 and 17-year-olds voting will be a common event.

CHAIRMAN’S COLUMN
Hard to believe that summer is over, and what
a great one we’ve had. But after week upon
week of hot sunny days and still nights, the
few days running up to Coal Aston Gala
gave us some concern, with rain and wind in
the forecast.
GALA WEEKEND
We needn’t have worried, because once again
we were blessed with a stunning day which
brought the crowds out in their hundreds to
enjoy what must surely be the social highlight
of a Coal Aston year. Our Gala team excelled
themselves this year with new attractions
and stalls added to the usual favourites,
topped off with a fantastic flypast by the RAF
Spitfire. Combined with the wonderful well
dressing, and rounded off with Johnny and The
Moondogs in concert, we can look back on this
year’s Gala as arguably the best yet.
Once again, we enjoyed an excellent Gala Weekend. After
some early morning rain, the weather became very kind and
settled into a glorious day of sunshine and summer clouds. The
proceedings were formally opened by Dronfield Town Mayor, Cllr
Sue Allsop at 12:30, and the Blessing of the Well Dressing took
place at 13:45.
Throughout the afternoon there was great
activity at the numerous stalls, many of which
were raising funds for a number of local
charities. At 14:35, everything suddenly stopped
as we enjoyed another spectacular fly-past by a
Spitfire of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.
This year we welcomed Shine choir and once
again Lenthall Infants School gave a display
of May Pole Dancing. Visitors were also kept
entertained by the street organ, Punch & Judy,
bouncy castle, roundabout, fire engine, bowling,
and a fine display of classic cars. The afternoon
was rounded off when younger visitors keenly
participated in races, after watching the annual
tug-of-war. Gala Day ended with a Concert
in the Village Hall, featuring Johnny and the
Moondogs, hosted and supported by Scuppered.
We were saddened recently to hear of the
passing of our long standing Trustee Terry
Barker, and our condolences go to his family at
this sad time. The role of Trustee is important
within the constitution of our charitable status.
Whilst not having any active involvement in
the day-to-day running of the Village Hall, the
Trustee would be called in the unlikely event
that the viability of the Village Hall became
fragile and a winding up of its affairs became
necessary. The Trustees attend our Annual
General Meeting where they are kept abreast of
all relevant matters which might affect future
viability. We may soon be obliged to appoint a
replacement trustee and would be pleased to
hear from anyone, preferably local, who might
consider taking on this important role.
To complete the weekend, on Sunday 6th July
in the Village Hall, there was an exhibition of
paintings, art works and crafts by the Royle Art
Group and Heather Vickers, together with a
display of Meccano models and photographs of
Coal Aston aerodrome.
To the many who gave their support to the
Gala Weekend, the Village Hall Management
Committee members express their
sincere thanks.

The Village Hall was represented at the funeral
of Terry Barker on Wednesday 18 June. Terry
was a Trustee of the Village Hall and a member
of the Management Committee until he moved
to Chesterfield.
On 23 August the Village Hall was awash with
the talent of Margaret Firth. She mounted a
one-woman show of magnificent examples of
her talent including a portrait of the Queen,
which received royal congratulations. If you
were elsewhere you missed a real treat …. if you
were there you will know what we mean.

As usual this summer we took a break from the concerts after
a tremendous Gala night concert featuring our local Beatles
tribute band ‘Johnny & The Moondogs’. It has been our privilege
to see these lads blossom over the last two or three years into
what is without doubt the very best of Beatles tribute in this
part of the country.
Their attention to detail in equipment pays
off in bucketfuls with authentic Beatle guitars
including a Hofner Violin Bass, Rickenbacker
and Gretsch guitars not to mention a very
special John Lennon signature acoustic. These
are played through Vox amplifiers and with
‘Ringo’s’ Ludwig drums providing the percussion
and all four of the band being talented
singers, the result is uncanny. This time they
concentrated on Beatles Rock ‘n’ Roll material
with hit after hit combined with so many album
tracks, providing the perfect end to an amazing
Gala day. The Moondogs ooze quality in their
performance; close your eyes (‘and I’ll kiss you’)
and it’s just a perfect Beatles sound, we’ll look
forward to seeing them back before too long.
Now, we have some great music lined up this
Autumn at the Village Hall, with Fake Thackray,
John Watterson, making a welcome return with
his brilliant take on the songs and stories from
the late great Jake Thackray. Then a Friday
evening special concert on 31st October with
the delightful Rough Island Band from St
Agnes, Isles Of Scilly, who delighted a packed
house at the Village Hall one Sunday afternoon
Reminders of an
industrial past
A bio-diversity study of the Moss Valley
confirmed a long history of activity in this
valley in agriculture and industry. Some of
the plant species are indicators that parts of
the Moss Valley, including most of the woods
between Coal Aston and Norton, are ancient
woodland. There are six Sites of Special
Scientific Interest (SSSI’s) in the Moss Valley.
These are three species-rich sites known as
Moss Valley Meadows, situated in the middle
of the valley, two ancient woodlands, Whinacre
and Brownstorth Woods, and part of the
wetland along the Moss Brook to Eckington.
in April this year. They are making another
quick tour of the north and it’s brilliant to be
able to feature them once more. The Swing
Commanders are back in November, but this
concert has been sold out for several weeks
now, testimony to the brilliance and popularity
of this unique band. Hopefully they’ll be back
later in 2015.
The Valley is also rich in industrial archaeology.
There are reminders that woodland industries
once provided local people with their
livelihood. Mining for coal and ironstone
was carried out. But even before the benefits
of coal and coke were understood, coppicing
for charcoal and white coal production was
carried out here.
Saturday 20th December marks the occasion of
The Christmas Show, which each year attracts
a sell-out audience. At this stage we have
little idea of who will be appearing alongside
Scuppered, but rest assured we’ll put on a
great night’s entertainment with the traditional
Christmas fayre on the table.
We have developed a new emailing list
to promote these events. If you would like
to receive concert and Scuppered related

to the list. We promise not to deluge you with
material but will try to keep you up-to-date with
our events.
Charcoal was important in the smelting of
lead and later in the production of steel, but
white coal was introduced, because it produced
a greater heat than charcoal and was more
efficient.
There are remains of weirs and dams that
harnessed the power of the River Moss from
the early 19th century for local industries, such
as the manufacture of edge tools.
Some of the pathways we walk through
the woods today were used in former times
by people and packhorses for transporting
products made or grown in the valley to
markets in Dronfield, Sheffield and beyond.
When you walk through local woods, whether it
be for exercise or to see the carpets of bluebells
or admire the rich variety of trees, remember
this whole area was once a workplace.
ROOMS FOR HIRE
The Village Hall has three rooms available for
hire at various times. In addition to the Main
Hall, which is ideal for dances, parties and
concerts, there are two meeting rooms able
to accommodate up to 30 people, depending
upon the layout. One of these rooms is ideal
for serving a buffet or as a quiet room, for
events in the Main Hall, whilst the other has a
computer/video projector.
Seeing Double
Recently, one of our committee members’ wives broke an egg into the frying pan and was surprised
to see that it was double-yolked. The second egg was then cracked into the pan and it was the
same. With some anticipation, she then opened up a third egg and the result is shown in our
photograph. So, when it came to using the remaining eggs, she was getting really interested
and sure enough, they all did the same thing, giving a total of six double-yolkers from one box!
Apparently, the chances of this happening could be as high as 1,000,000,000,000 to 1.

But our story doesn’t end there. The eggs were purchased at McCalls Butchers on Barnard Avenue
and apparently quite a few people had returned telling the same story. So, what were the chances
of this happening? We don’t know, but it certainly proves that Coal Aston is a pretty special place

hidden behind later walls and
alterations, and some retain the same
features that they had when they were
built from the medieval period onwards.
But new research, which forms part of the
town’s Barn Project, is leading to a greater
understanding of how our forbears lived and
worked.
When The Barn Heritage Centre opens on

OW, that was a great summer! Well, I think it was. The
trouble is, being just 15 months old, I don’t have too
many other times to compare it to.
It’s been a case of walks, walks, walks and wall to wall sunshine with
hardly any time to paws in between. There has been hardly a drop of
rain. I hate rain. Well, it’s the puddles really that I don’t do; they’re no
fun at all when you only have little legs.
My favourite places are Graves Park, Millhouses Park and Cliffe
Park, which have two things in common. Firstly, they are all parks!
Secondly, they all have wonderful cafes and there if there is one thing
better than a walk it’s a walk with a biscuit break.
A great sunny Saturday afternoon was spent at Barlow Carnival
where I was awarded - paws to be impressed - three rosettes in the
fun dog show!
I’ve also been away on holiday, to a fabulous cottage down in
Cornwall, high up on the hills of Bodmin Moor. I heard my owners
saying something about “let’s see who he can annoy with his howling
in this out-of-the-way place.” I can’t understand what they could have
meant.
Anyway, welcome to my first column for this magazine. The editor
wants me to act as his repawter, but I reckon he’s barking up the
wrong tree unless I can get a little help from some of the other canines
out there.

there’s a local place which goes out of its way to offer the paw of
friendship to us four-legged boys and girls, I want to hear about it.

national charity in
providing a young
Dronfield girl with
a much-needed
special chair
A
12-year-old Dronfield girl is sitting in comfort with her family
thanks to a chair provided by a children’s disability charity
and Co-op staff and customers.
Mollie Johnson has quadriplegic cerebral palsy – which means she is
unable to sit, stand or walk – and has developed scoliosis which causes her
to lean to one side.
She has a specially moulded wheelchair which is designed to help delay –
or even prevent – an operation to insert a metal rod into her spine to keep
her straight. However, she desperately needed a specialised PPod chair to
relax in at home that would support the benefits of the wheelchair.
On the advice of Mollie’s occupational therapist, her parents turned to the
Newlife Foundation for help. Newlife’s charity partnership with Central
England Co-operative meant the application could be signed off immediately.
Central England Co-operative launched the charity partnership in May
2012, since which time colleagues and customers across the retail area
have raised a staggering £660,000 and, to date, funded equipment for more
than 280 disabled and terminally ill children.
Mollie’s mum Gillian said: “We have always wanted her to have a comfy
chair in the lounge so she could safely relax at the same height as everyone
else instead of always being on the floor. But until recently, when Mollie’s OT
told us about them, we didn’t know about these special ‘P Pod’ chairs.
“Because Mollie has a wheelchair provided through statutory services there

RONFIELD In Bloom’s gardening and school art competitions are
more popular year after year and there was a bumper attendance
at the recent awards night at the Civic Centre.
Deputy Mayor, Coun Angela Talford, presented dozens of certificates and
trophies to entrants of all ages.
Business in Bloom Gold Award winner was The Talbot pub and joint winners of
the Best Residential Home category were Brookview and Meadow Grange. Best
Front Garden winner was Sharon Brown, Best Hanging Basket Sharon Nolan,
Best Tubs/Planters Mr D. Ridal and Best Eco Garden Malc and Maggie Holland.

RONFIELD folk are being urged to remember, remember
hedgehogs this 5th November by children’s character
Alan the Hedgehog.

dreamed up Alan in a bid to
do something to help halt the
decline in numbers of
hedgehogs, and his

have attracted fans from
overseas, as well as the UK.

following advice so people
can ensure that their

your fire in advance, or
move the fire’s location
before lighting. If this isn’t
possible, then put a ring of
sand around the fire so you
can see if any little
footprints are made or build

UTUMN in Derbyshire. Warm and sunny or damp and bitingly cold. Fortunately, whatever the weather,
The Angel, at Holmesfield has it covered.
The October day on which colleague Mike Firth and I visited, fell into into the former category and we had a place
in the airy conservatory where we could enjoy views of the lush hills in the distance. But, on a dreary day, it would be
equally attractive thanks to its places by the fire and other snug, traditional features.
In the New Year, Malcolm and Mandy Drewery will have been at the helm of The Angel for three years. During that time,
head chef Malcolm has developed an extensive range of gluten-free dishes which have proved extremely popular with
people with and without special dietary requirements. The Angel’s lighter options have also been significantly developed.
You need to allow a little time to choose your lunch because, in addition to the comprehensive daily menus, there is a
huge specials board.
I jumped right in with a special, ordering a starter of smoked salmon with beetroot, orange and a
chive creme freche (£6). It was as fresh and colourful as it sounded and tasted delicious. In fact, I’d
have happily made a complete lunch of it with, perhaps, a chunk of bread.
Mike’s starter was Thai crab cakes with mixed leaves and a sweet chilli dip (£5.75) and he was just
as happy, impressed with the delicate balance of spices.
The Thai theme tempted me, too, when it came to the main course. I chose a tasty red curry, rice
and a naan bread from the lighter menu (£6.50). It was plenty for me, after a starter, but for heartier
appetites, or if you were ordering only one course, there is a main version (£9.50).
Mike was thrilled to find hake fillet (£13) on the specials board, and it looked splendid when it
arrived served with red onion and tomato relish, herb-roasted new potatoes and vegetables. He
reported it tasted just as good as it looked!
After we decided to finish our meal by sharing a dessert, Mandy produced the dessert board which
boasted several options (all marked with ‘GF’ apart from Bakewell pudding). After much deliberation,
we managed to ‘narrow’ it down to
three! In the end, we plumped for
raspberry and chocolate roulade.

to 9pm, Monday to Saturday, and
until 8pm, on Sunday. The second
Tuesday of every month is steak
night, which is a huge hit with
diners. A new draw is a lazy
breakfast, from 10am to noon, on

at Hilltop Sports and Social Club, with a committee being set up to run
events and activities.

celebrating its recent formation with a Launch Party at the Green
Dragon at 7.30pm on Wednesday, 29th October.

This year, Andy has come up with two new designs depicting local

The Forge. All profits go to BBC Children In Need. Last year Andy's
cards raised £250 for the charity.
Bolivian weekend

NSTONE’S Tony and Jill Bethell will be hosting their annual
fund-raising 'Bolivia Bonanza' event at their home,
Ramshaw Lodge, this month.
The event takes place on 1st and 2nd November, from 10am-5pm, with
lots of Bolivian goods on sale plus various stalls and food.
The couple's daughter Linda Lugtigheid, husband Pete, and their four
children have been working for the churches and farmers in Apolo,
Bolivia, for the last 12 years. The family is moving on to start a new
area of ministry and proceeds from the fund-raiser will support that as
well as continuing work in Apolo.

remain involved in the sport in a friendly, not too
competitive, environment.
