Hawaiian Kamali`i Summer Program
Our mission is to perpetuate and preserve the art of Hawaiian canoe paddling by providing an environment rooted in traditional Hawaiian values that promote personal growth, character development, and achievement in physical fitness. photo by 808photo.me Board of Directors President’s Message Dave Ward President Looking back on 2015, HCC continued to strive for excellence in our youth programs, competitive paddling, and leadership in the community. Kelsey Nae‘ole Vice-President HCC honored Coach Paul Ka‘uhane Lu‘uwai for 35 years of service. Considering the hundreds of lives Ka‘uhane has touched and his coaching accomplishments, he is truly one of a kind. As a leader in the sport of outrigger canoe racing, HCC seeks to maintain cutting edge equipment, and the Vortex is just that. The canoe was designed by longtime HCC paddler, Mike Giblin. We were thrilled that Mike was able to paddle Pi‘ilani in her first channel crossing, the Pailolo Challenge. (See photo of Pi‘ilani above.) The pinnacle of each year, however, is the HCRA State Championships. I am always awed and humbled watching our youth paddlers perform at their best. Our youth teams earned medals in 11 out of 13 races. HCC once again claimed the state championship title in Hilo this year, thanks in large part to our youngest paddlers. Mahalo to all of the innumerable volunteers who make all of this possible. We look forward to seeing you all in 2016! The seven-week cultural and educational program opens up opportunities for Maui youth to explore and learn about islands of Maui Nui. Kamali‘i immerses children in Native Hawaiian culture, history, language and values through huaka‘i (field trips). With each huaka‘i, keiki learn appropriate cultural protocols that are unique for each place and contribute to the ‘āina through projects such as clearing a lo‘i or planting trees. Children as young as ten experience open-ocean paddling as they voyage to West Moloka‘i and Kaho‘olawe. Many young people return year after year to the program, developing as leaders, and then working as paid youth leaders in their teen years. Mahalo to our generous program supporters this year! HCC received grants from the Peter and Debbie Martin Foundation, Saltchuk Resources, Inc., Kent & Polli Smith Foundation, Bendon Foundation, NFL Charities, HEI Charitable Foundation and the County of Maui. HCC keiki clearing the lo‘i in Hālawa Valley Coming Up... World Sprints in Australia! HCC will field several crews in the upcoming International Va‘a Federation World Sprints in Australia. The event is slated for May 5-15, 2016 with about 4,000 athletes representing 35 countries competing. World Sprints are hosted by a different country every two years. Our youth paddlers work all year long, preparing for this event. They fundraise to offset the costs of international travel and train under Coach Ka‘uhane to compete in OC6 and OC1 races. Also competing in World Sprints next year will be HCC open men, open women, 60 women, 70 women, 40 men and 50 men. 2015 State Champions Hawaiian Canoe Club claimed the HCRA State Championship at Hilo Bay on August 1. Our youth teams jumped to an early lead, earning medals in 11 out of 13 events, including 8 gold medals. HCC claimed the AAAA Division with 375 points over Lanikai CC with 348 points. Hundreds of HCC paddlers and supporters cheered through muggy and rainy conditions, greeting each team that returned to the beach with lei, hugs, and the notorious “HCC tunnel”. “States is about much more than paddling,” said Head Coach Diane Ho. It takes a strong team at all levels to bring the pieces together for a big win.” Mahalo, Coach David Hoonan-Amby in the tunnel! The leaders of HCC honored Coach Paul Ka‘uhane Lu‘uwai for 35 years of service to our keiki competitive paddling and educational programs. We celebrated Coach at the Annual ‘Aha ‘Aina at King Kamehameha Golf Club on July 19. Two longstanding keiki paddlers, Kellen Bean and Mogul Lu‘uwai, presented Coach with a gift of appreciation for his years of leadership and dedication. Three hundred people, including HCC paddlers, family members and friends, attended the event. The Pailolo Challenge Lake ʻOhana Scholarship The 2015 Lake ‘Ohana scholarship went to Tyson Felicilda. An H.P. Baldwin High School graduate, Tyson is attending Boise State in Idaho, majoring in Kinesiology. HCC provided Tyson the Lake ‘Ohana scholarship of $1,000 in recognition of his commitment to paddling, his work ethic and exemplary sportsmanship. The Pailolo Challenge was held on September 19, 2015. Widely known as “the world’s funnest canoe race,” Pailolo Challenge provides world class surfing experience from D.T. Fleming Beach to Kaunakakai. It was a record year with 97 teams competing, including teams from Washington, California, Singapore, American Samoa, Australia, Canada, Hong Kong and New Zealand. The 2015 Pailolo Challenge was made possible through grants from Hawaii Tourism Authority, Office of Hawaiian Affairs, A&B Foundation, Matson Foundation and sponsorships from Tobi’s Shave Ice, Kialoa Paddles, and Maui Adventure Sports. photo by 808photo.me Pi‘ilani Kupuna ‘Iokepa Nae‘ole blessed Pi‘ilani, the newest member of our ‘ohana.
