Attention All OVR Members All members are welcome to attend the monthly Socializer and Board Meeting on the 2nd Tuesday of every month. 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Firehouse Grill in Blue Ash. 4785 Lake Forest Dr. 3 Wine Tasting Josh Snyder - Editor, photos by Ted Hunter The weather was so nice on the evening of Friday, May 6, as I drove to the Little Red Schoolhouse in Indian Hill, that I just wanted to keep driving. By the time I arrived to the wine tasting, many of the 84 OVR members who attended had already parked, forming a colorful channel for me to drive through in the parking lot. Members milled about the parking lot in the spring sunshine and slowly moved the party into the historic schoolhouse while enjoying conversation, home-made hors d'oeuvres and the excellent wines chosen for the auction this year. President Grant Karnes auctioned off 22 lots of three bottles of wine each as several spirited exchanges took place over the different selections. Vice-president Dennis Okin often sweetened the pot by offering past Rallye 4 Porsche Mariemont posters and OVR logo glasses, while Treasurer Herb Beck kept busy taking payments at each auction's end. Toward the end of the evening, Zone 4 Representative Michael Soriano presented OVR with a certificate recognizing the 55th anniversary of the Region. Now that's something everyone could raise a glass to. Photos by Ted Hunter, clockwise from top: Susan Okin, Laura Karnes, Patti Godofsky and Sandi Beck prepare hors d'oeuvres. Bill Alvater pours Jill Buzzard a glass of wine. Ed and Pam Busam decide on their favorites from the wine list. Porsche Music Gary Nichols - Klink, your “retired” DE Chair My friend of fifty five years, Wesley B. Boatman, Jr. called a while back to catch up on the latest goings on in our lives, and the talk ran the gamut from music to cars to road trips and the inevitable “we need to get together soons” that always seem to be at longer intervals than they should be. Wes is more than an accomplished professional musician. He has nine Emmy awards for musical composition from his days of writing scores for daytime soap operas out on the left coast. He still plays occasionally with the old local band from his college days, Haymarket Riot, if you are old enough to remember them. Nowadays Wes lives on his farm in Kentucky, raises horses and Bull Mastiffs, and works for a Cable TV station as an executive for programming. Back in ‘68 Wes bought a four door ‘57 Chevy 283 with the “mighty two-barrel carb,” two speed Powerglide, that got outfitted with four Keystone Mags and a couple of Cherry Bomb glass pack mufflers. It had no oomph, but it sounded good except the radio, which flat out was beyond help. With the assistance of our friend Greggie Dietrich, whose father, “Big” Vince, a.k.a. “XL”, who ran a gasket shop behind the house, we tore into getting the sound system in the Five Seven up to snuff (read loud, with whatever quality could be had at the time, which was not much.) Now, none of us had a clue about electrical stuff, but being automotive, it was usually just two wires, hot and ground but which is which? None of us were acoustical engineer whiz bangs, so we just cut holes, added multiple speakers, and blew a bunch of fuses until the thing worked. Eventually we graduated to building all sorts of speaker boxes for the garage band before we could afford real brands like Marshall and Fender, stuffing 15” JBL’s into a reverse Eliminator bottom we made out of plywood and covered them in genuine fake naugahyde. It was another lifetime, one where your author “played at” playing bass with a Gibson EBO and a Marshall, but then cars, girls and other distractions ended my musical aspirations of rock stardom. Wes soldiered on. This all brings me to really get started on this woven web, when Rose wandered out to the Middle-Aged Men’s Club a while back while I was rooting through some old boxes of parts from the SC looking for some obscure clamp or widget, which escapes me now. I had my tunes on the old rack system I bought back in ‘79, cranked up with a random mix of Mountain, Cream, BS&T, Chicago, Boston, Santana, CSNY, Yes, and EL&P, at wall shaking decibels. As Rose calls it, “my sixties and seventies head banger music.” Guilty as charged, but the wall shaking sessions are fewer and further between than twenty years ago. Getting old, I suppose, but when the need arises… out at least twenty years ago as a weight saving gesture. With due respect to Blaupunkt and Porsche, the sound of that setup was less than sizzling. My old transistor radio had better sound quality. I may have turned it on a half a dozen times total. The real music was coming out of the back of the car. The combination of mechanical noises and exhaust note was far more satisfying than anything out of the wimpy speakers. Car nuts like exhaust notes, whether it is a flat six, big block V-8, or a Ferrari V-12, and good aficionados can even tell you what it is without seeing it. The only one that ever turned me off was the Viper’s V-10. It sounded like two Audi five cylinders hung together. It’s a shame it has all that power and no visceral satisfaction. Somewhere in the archives is a CD with an hour of nothing but Porsche exhaust sounds from LeMans, although the intro to the tape is a Top Fuel Dragster idling through and into a burnout. Makes my heart go pitty pat. But to this day, nothing will raise my blood pressure better than a 2.7 MFI with an uncapped Sport Muffler at full song. Loud, but not too, and all the mechanicals turn the tune into a pure symphony of the essence of Porsche’s air cooled era, music wise, so to speak. The newer cars are certainly magnificent in every respect of their performance abilities. The exhaust notes are different, the mechanical sounds subdued. Perhaps something has been lost in the transition, although no one can argue that the late models are anything less than stellar performance sports cars. But I suppose that can be chalked up to progress, which goes the route it needs to go without regard to the past. I pulled the covers off the SC on a Saturday in the middle of April and got the old girl fired up. I sat and listened to her for twenty minutes while she got her oil up to temp. Nobody around, and pure music to my ears. Mid-Ohio looms ahead in June and it can come none too soon. It’s been too long a break since October. The driving itch is getting harder to scratch away, it’s time to put her back on the track and listen to the special tunes coming out of the back end. The air cooled cars at the track are going away. Of the 180 cars that will be there, maybe ten percent will be of that venue. A few will keep the faith for the older cars in the foreseeable future; Richard Wartenburg, John Meyer, Jim Taber, Ted Hunter, Josh Snyder, Jeff Woodard, Andy Bennett, Dave Messmer, and yours truly to name a few. I asked Wes, what “music” stuff he was doing these days. He replied, “Not much, but I still like hearing my horses whinny, and the sound of the John Deere while I work my fields give me great solace and comfort." But he ended by saying, “I still miss the Five Seven.” I understand buddy. I stumbled across the old Blaupunkt radio that used to occupy space in the middle of the dash on the SC. I have been going to this place since I was 16 years old. My father took me there. I fell in love with it and make an effort to go back every year. I think as you get older you really notice how things change. The area I lived in as a kid just arriving in Cincinnati was a working dairy farm. The land my house sat on was a golf course 35 years ago. Today Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy and a Kroger the size of Utah rule the area. The Good Shepherd Parish was being built. The land behind the Parish was teeming with deer. Not so much anymore. Kiawah, despite some additions, some growth still looks and feels exactly as it did when I first saw it in the mid-1970s. It seems like one of the few constants that hasn't betrayed me and become something I no longer recognize. My wife and I got engaged there and it’s highly likely my son Tyler was conceived there. My two older sons have spent many spring breaks with me at this place. Is it the most perfect place in America? If you play golf it absolutely is, and I do not play golf. So what’s the allure? There’s not a lot to do except goof off on the beach and contemplate how very small you are. Which I enjoy doing and really need to keep things in perspective. There are some beautiful homes on the island and there is a great deal of money. Kiawah is a bastion of capitalism and I love that about it. Virtually every person I’ve met on this island is self-made and I’ve never met a person with a sour attitude or a big head. Reminds me very much of this Porsche club. the famed Ocean Course. Austin Healys, an entire chorus line of Porsches: 356s, 60s, 70s and 80s 911s, an array of 924s, 944s and 968s. Porsche had a company sponsored area that featured the new 911, a Cayenne and a Boxster Spyder. Another Porsche sponsored area let you take out one of 5 Porsches on a guided tour of the island. Soon enough it was about 73, sunny and not a cloud in the sky. We hung around for about 3 hours and saw what seemed like a couple of hundred vehicles. Sunday is the Concours. The crème de la crème were hand polished and grass was picked out of the tires treads with brushes and tweezers. The historically significant and exotic cars are presented. If Saturday was good and it was, Sunday was a mind blowing feast. Master of ceremonies Keith Martin of Sports Car Market magazine and “What's My Car Worth?” was seemingly astounded at some of the cars. Brass-era cars are the first eye candy you take in as you mill through the park. A 1912 Buick was being driven off the carrier onto the grounds. A perfect 1928 red Auburn Boat Tail, 1919 Pierce Arrow, 1931 Chrysler Imperial, 1949 Jaguar MKV, 1960 AC Greyhound. Next row: Ferrari Dino, 76 Porsche 911 Turbo, a 1959 Berkeley, Austin Healy 100’s, 3000’s Jaguars, a Porsche 550 Spyder. As we kept walking there were more cars, but there was also food. A shrimp po’ boy and sweet tea? I took all of it, diet be damned. Then just over the ridge past the Porsche drive experience was the true feast, the exotics. This year for our 12th anniversary we decided to make the trek because the island sponsors the Kiawah Island Motoring Retreat. We arrived Friday afternoon, shut off the car, ran to the beach, performed our family greeting to the ocean which is a taste of the water and then we got settled in our condo. It was cold in South Carolina when it’s typically quite hot and steamy. In fact, it was warmer in Cincinnati and warmer in Thunder Bay Ontario where my wife is from than where we were. When Saturday arrived, the sun was warming the island and by 7 a.m. the golfers were out. It was perfect. Saturday was the less formal car show on the park around Ty Clark sits in a Ferrari LaFerrari in full Ferrari kit at the Kiawah Island Concours d'Elegance. 8 Kiawah Island Koni Tech Session Jeff Clark - Rally/Tour Chair Rich Rosenberg - Technical Chair I could not have prepared for what we saw. From the Ingram Collection a 2015 Porsche 918 in a purple that seemed to change color depending on the angle and their Porsche 550 Spyder. A 1994 Jaguar XJ 220 (220 being the top speed of the car) I have never seen this car in the flesh. An extremely rare 1990 Jaguar R9R and a Ford GT40 in full Gulf Racing Livery. A 1953 Maserati A6GCS. The new Alfa Romeo Spyder, a McLaren MP-4, a bright red Ferrari F40, a Ferrari California, a yellow Ferrari F50 and a Ferrari LaFerrari owned by George and Janet Desko. You'll be able to tell the thirty or so OVR members who attended a Koni tech session on Saturday, April 30, by how much faster they are on track. Lee Grimes, 20+ year Koni employee and SCCA racer, taught the group the finer points to tuning a suspension. Lee is extremely knowledgeable and you can tell that he really enjoys what he does. After a very informative lecture we receive a tour of the working repair facility. A couple of members took the opportunity to test their dampers (not dampeners which refers to getting something wet which if it were the case your dampers would definitely need replacing) on a machine that lifts one end of the car, drops it and diagrams the performance of the shocks which generally shows if the shocks are bad or not. One of the major points made by Lee, contrary to popular belief, is that a shock cannot be tested by hand to determine whether it is good or not. A shock dyno replicates real time usage with many cycles of the piston in a short time period which is impossible to accomplish by hand. OVR was the first car group to return to Koni in many years because of the military contract restrictions that are in place. Who would have guessed that shocks for Humvees could have national security implications? As the chair of the tech committee I would like to thank Lee and his employees for their hospitality. Ty in front of a Ford GT40. My 8 year old son, despite being raised in a household surrounded by all things Porsche, has become a Ferrari guy. Maybe it’s our Italian roots. Ty insisted on wearing his Ferrari shirt and his Ferrari hat to the event and he looked every bit the part of a Ferrari aficionado. His jaw dropped upon seeing the LaFerrari. Only in pictures and on TV had he seen this car. Ty understands cars and car people and he’s very respectful and very polite. He knows not to touch. The owners of the LaFerrari, George and Janet Desko, walked over and started talking with Ty. It was one of the moments where you know you did a great job raising your kid, by watching how he engages with adults. Mrs. Desko asked Ty if he liked the yellow F50 or the red LaFerrari. He liked the red. She then asked if he’d ever been in one! He said no, but that the car was very beautiful. She reached for his hand, led him over and helped him into the car. OVR Members watch Lee Grimes demostrate a shock dyno. Amazing. My wife planned this trip for us, a testament to her enduring good nature and willingness to put up with her husband’s obsessions. I am already planning our trip back next April. Porsche 550 Spyder on Kiawah Island. 9 Periodic Oil Analysis John Patterson - Tech Committee WARNING! After reading this article, you should avoid discussing its content with your spouse or neighbors, as they already suspect you are excessive-compulsive about your Stuttgart steed, and there’s no need to confirm their suspicions. This article covers some of the details about periodically having used engine oil analyzed by a service company. We’ll avoid any controversy here about what type oil Porsche owners should use or how frequently they should change their oil and filters. After all, our purpose here is to enlighten readers, and not start a fist fight at the next PCA club meeting! Why bother with an oil analysis? Well, an oil analysis is like a periodic blood work, which is standard rigor for annual physical exams, especially for those of us “of a certain age.” In other words, it’s a diagnostic tool that provides a snapshot of your engine’s health and possibly the reasonableness of your oil and filter change intervals. Do real people actually have such things done? Well, yes. In fact, truck fleet operators, air freight flyers, heavy equipment operators, military maintenance depots, and many race teams routinely have engine, transmission, and differential oils analyzed to plan fluid change intervals and to study wear indicators for planning re-build requirements. (Full Disclosure: Some PCA members, whose names will remain unmentioned here, also get their oil analyzed for their daily drivers.) Blackstone (www.blackstone-labs.com) is a well known provider of oil analysis services. Contact them directly to obtain sample bottles for mailing and general information. Porsche of the Village favors Southwest Research Institute, and POV will gladly grab an oil sample for their customers and furnish the filled bottle ready for mailing. ExxonMobil provides a comprehensive service through their Mobil Serv Lubricant Analysis division, formerly known as SIGNUM. Simply bring an oil sample to one of their distributors, like PetroChoice (formerly Suburban Oil Company) in Mason at 513-459-8100. Such service providers typically utilize spectrometry technology to measure wear elements, additive levels, and contamination. I’ve been using ExxonMobil for some 8 years now for my annual engine oil analysis. Here’s what their analysis covers: • Wear elements - metals like aluminum, iron, copper • Contaminants - substances like boron, potassium, silicon • Additives - elements like magnesium, barium, zinc • Viscosity - the most important aspect of any lubricant. • Oxidation – a measurement of the breakdown of the base oil’s physical characteristics, usually attributable to age and/or operating conditions. 10 • Soot – measured in weight percentage…high levels relate to reduced combustion efficiency. • Traces of coolant and water. Their report includes some neat graphs, too, in which previous data is plotted to show trends and variances against industry norms. (Porsche AG does not publish data regarding acceptable wear factors or contaminant trace levels.) Blackstone provides a comparable report. The cost is about $35 per analysis and the results are typically sent via e-mail. So who should get such analyses? Why bother? As some PCA members may know, the author’s daily driver is a ’99 996 Cabriolet. Yes, the water cooled 911 with the dreaded frail intermediate shaft bearing. So I have my biases and fears for sure. Nonetheless, the following groups might consider periodic oil analysis as a useful diagnostic tool. • Driver’s Education participants. (Samples taken prior to a DE weekend and again following a DE weekend might make for an interesting comparison.) • Owners of Porsches with 50,000 miles or more in which the owner intends to keep the car for a long time. • Obsessive-compulsive PCA members who must have data to sleep peacefully. • 996/997/Boxster owners with the aforementioned IMS bearings. And here are a few examples of what unusually high trace element levels in engine oil might suggest: • Silicon = insufficient air filtration. • Potassium = an anti-freeze ingredient. Did someone mention “intermix” from a compromised head/intake gasket? • Lead = a sacrificial wear material in rod and main bearings. • Chromium = used in piston rings. • Iron = cam lobes and valve stem wear. • One or more = extended oil + filter change intervals. After compiling a trend of several oil analysis cycles, routine oil analysis users may decide to extend oil/filter change intervals by 1-2000 miles and then to start accumulating data for review in the future. Before extending such intervals though, discuss doing so with your P-car dealership Service Manager, analysis lab tech support, or other experts. Remember, lives are at stake here, folks. Sleep well...I do. Thanks to Dan Wideman, Senior Lubrication Engineer at PetroChoice, for reviewing this article and offering several excellent comments. FYI-Dan is an actual expert. With summer upon us, there are many events available throughout Zone 4 to entertain you each and every weekend regardless of what types of events you enjoy. There have been several detailing and tech sessions held to get us ready for the driving season. Quite a few regions began their autocross seasons hosting schools designed to teach and develop the basic skills necessary to participate in an autocross. By attending these schools and mastering the basic skills, it helps to encourage the students to participate in future autocross events by giving them confidence. There have been a number of DEs held, as well as several driving tours. And, there are always dinner drives and social gatherings, which provide plenty of opportunities to get together. Be sure to check your local region’s website and newsletter as well as the Zone 4 website http://zone4pca.org for the latest details on the many events close to you that are being planned. Here are just some of the events taking place this month: This year several regions are celebrating milestone anniversaries. Rally Sport Region celebrated their 20th anniversary at Stahls Automotive Museum, a private collection of extraordinary vintage automobiles tucked away in Chesterfield, MI. There was excellent participation from the members including a number of founding members. I had the honor of presenting several items to the region to commemorate this momentous occasion. • June 12 is Southeast Michigan Region’s Waterford Family Day The Ohio Valley Region’s 55th Anniversary is this year. On a beautiful night last month, I attended the region’s charity event and auction at the Little Red Schoolhouse in Indian Hill. There was a great turnout for this event and a record amount of money was raised. During the evening, we celebrated their anniversary. • Western Michigan Region’s Parade Orphans Dinner at Pereddies Restaurant is June 25 Later this month, we will be travelling to Jay Peak, VT, to attend the 61st Porsche Parade; a weeklong gathering that includes competitive and non-competitive events, seminars, workshops, tours and banquets. For those unable to attend Parade, there is another opportunity to participate in a national event. The event previously entitled Escape has been reorganized and named Treffen North America. It is a multi-event socially oriented long weekend focusing on camaraderie and friendship. The first one will be in September in Lake Tahoe, and beginning in 2017, there will be one in the spring and one in autumn. We are continuing to work on coordinating a master calendar, and are giving each region the opportunity to upload their calendar for inclusion. I highly recommend that you regularly visit the Zone 4 website, to check out the events page, which contains a calendar of some of the many events taking place throughout the zone. As many regions notify members of new and upcoming events via email, update your contact information with National to ensure 12 • June 3-5 is the Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix Porscheplatz • Central Indiana Region’s CruZionsville Charity Car Show is June 4 • June 4 is Ohio Valley Region’s Autocross at Forest Fair Mall • Maumee Valley Region’s Business Meeting is June 9 • June 11 is Michiana Region’s Autocross at TireRack in South Bend • Northern Ohio Region’s Autocross at Euclid Square Mall is June 12 • Motor-Stadt Region’s Board Meeting at Spagnoulo’s in Okemos is June 14 • June 16-19 plan to attend Rally Sport Region’s Grattan Weekend Track Days • MORPCA’s Basket to Bucket Drive and Dine is June 18 • On June 26, join ARPCA members at PNC Park for the Pirates vs. Dodgers game I look forward to having the opportunity of meeting each and every one of you at events throughout the upcoming year.
