MEETING GOD IN THE DARK AND
BROKEN PLACES
Now deep into winter, we are also deep into our 150th Anniversary Year of St. Thérèse Couderc’s
mystical experience of seeing God’s Infinite Goodness written on everything and everywhere. As a
winter lover, I am intrigued by how the bareness of our trees now allows for refreshing new ways
of seeing. Lovely, old statues usually encountered on hidden paths stand out in stark beauty. Pines
appear all the more majestic, laden with snow. Amidst bright stars glimmering these cold nights, I feel
breathlessly uplifted by God’s goodness and your goodness to us.
SPAT-1 $7.00 offering
Inside verse: “May the road rise to
meet you. May the wind be always at
your back.” “And until we meet again,
may God hold you in the palm of His
hand.” An old Irish blessing

OUR
MISSION
We work for the
transformation of the
world by awakening
and deepening faith
with and for the people
of our times.
It is with invigorating enthusiasm that we welcome Joan McGovern in her
new role as Director of Mission Advancement and Full Time Member of
the Retreat Team! Joan comes to us with solid professional experience,
most recently at JP Morgan Chase. She is a certified spiritual director and
has served as a Cenacle Staff Associate, giving programs and helping out
with hospitality. Through this integrated
involvement, Joan is bringing new ways
of seeing and promoting the goodness
of our Cenacle mission of prayer,
community and ministry. We as Cenacle Sisters surely know that
this mission is enduring and yet ever-new because through your
love, prayers, presence and contributions, you are reflections of
God as Goodness itself.
Amidst the beauty, serenity and challenges
of winter, we do not wish to forget this!

CELEBRATE ALL SAINTS/ALL SOULS AT THE CENACLE BENEFIT
“The souls of the just are in the hand
of God…” (Wisdom 3: 1)
Holiness abounded on November 1st
as we celebrated the saints who inspire
and intercede for us! Friends of the
Cenacle and Cenacle Sisters were
deeply moved by the opportunity to
honor the souls of loved ones who live
on in our hearts across time and eternity,
during an intimate Eucharistic Liturgy
celebrated by Fr. Larry Lewis, M.M.
Our chefs outdid themselves with the
elegant brunch that followed!
This benefit was a meaningful
expression of our new focus on
making our fundraising initiatives more
congruent with our Cenacle mission.

Joy boomerangs! This was surely the case
as members of the Women’s Group from
St. Margaret of Scotland Parish in Selden
gathered for a weekend retreat around the
theme of “From Miserable to Marvelous:
Negativity Out – Positivity In!” presented
by Sr. Barbara Medvesky, C.S.F.N.
Faith-filled contemplative singles gather
monthly to identify God’s desire for each
one. Discussions led by Joan McGovern,
focus on the theme for that session
followed by reflection, faith sharing and
our call to action in the Ministry of Single
Life.
Laudato Si’ “Praise be to you, my Lord!” was
surely our stance as Cenacle Sisters, as we
reflected upon Pope Francis’ encyclical on
the earth as our common home. What
a joy it is for us to allow the beauty of
our grounds here at Ronkonkoma to
embrace us!

The Ronkonkoma Cenacle Sisters invite you to join them
by making a gift for the Cenacle Retreat Center with
the purchase of a Memorial Brick. This is a unique and
personal way to memorialize your loved ones. These
purchases also support the Sisters in their ministries
of retreats, spiritual direction and adult faith formation.

Calling
You…
Mornings
for
Seniors
That Luminous Night
All was calm, silent and bright as Sr. Kathryn Madden pondered
with participants how on Christmas Eve, 1886, Jesus freed
St. Thérèse of Lisieux from the destructive pattern of needing
to please others and filled her soul with light.
People in their
wisdom years are enthusiastically responding to this
new program, envisioned by Carmela Bergman, Cenacle
Staff Associate. In Advent, Carmela invited participants to
journey with Mary from the Angel Gabriel’s message to the
birth of Jesus. All were invited by Mary to come closer and
look into the face of the Child.

Seeking illumination through alterations
of consolation and desolation…
Approaching significant decisions
holistically… Tasting the felt sense of
God at work in my life… These were the
“brilliant” dynamics of Ignatian Spirituality
that Sr. Mary
Spratt and Joan
McGovern shed
light upon with
participants
eager to
encounter God
at important
crossroads in
their lives.
Women from the Haitian Prayer Group
in Cambria Heights blessed us with their
prayerfulness and sisterly bonds. They
enthusiastically
embraced Sr.
Kathy Scott’s
invitation to
reflect on how
Pope Francis
is personally
inspiring them
to make the
coming year a
“Year of Mercy.”
And what to our wondering eyes should
appear, but a transformation of the Maude
Adams House kitchen into a storehouse
of vibrant handiwork and consciousness
raising! Pattye Pece, President of the
World Fair Trade Mobile, had beautiful
items from around the globe available
for purchase and movingly shared her
passion for the least in our midst.
