Audition and scene study workshop
This weekly workshop is perfect for the working actor who wants to sharpen or enhance their skills.
We begin by working on the actors’ instruments through exercises and relaxation. This will include
voice, body and movement, and sensory exploration tools that will provide a foundation for all other
work. As students progress, scenes and monologues will be chosen specific to each actor. Class
time will be used to work on rehearsed scenes by exploring various acting techniques.
Performance: In the final weeks, students will polish scenes for an invited industry showcase.
All actors will create a portfolio that will support them for auditions and readings.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR Derek Straat is the artistic director of Non Disposable Theatre: a collection
of artists and performers who provide sustainable, local, vibrant art that benefits charity. Mr. Straat
has been seen off-broadway and regionally as an actor, director and technician, and has appeared
on TV locally and in Korea, Malaysia and Brazil. He holds an MFA from the Actors Studio Drama
School and is a member of the Actor’s Equity Association (AEA).

The Eight Gates Theory and Practice PART I: THEORY
In Taoism the broken Yin line and the straight yang line represent the negative and positive dualism
existing in all things. Combinations of yin and yang lines form eight trigrams also known as the
eight gates. The eight gates can be arranged into 64 hexagrams which can be used to consult the I
Ching. The Taoist I Ching has been used for over 4000 years as an oracle of fortune, a guide to
success, and a dispensary of wisdom. Part I of this workshop will explore the Taoist theory of
dualism, and the consulting and interpretation of the I Ching.

Housed in a new state of the art facility, the Bernard and Anne Spitzer School of Architecture (SSA)
is seeking students for its pre-college and college level Architecture Career Lab. Uniquely positioned
as the only public school of architecture in New York City, the SSA Summer Career Lab exposes
those considering a career in design to the theory and practice of architecture through lectures,
computer and fabrication workshops, office tours, and design studios taught by our award-winning
and internationally recognized faculty. Through an emphasis on hand craft and digital fabrication,
interdisciplinary research, and ecologically and culturally sustainable practices, the Architecture
Summer Career Lab encourages a responsible engagement with the practice of architecture, while
cultivating rigorous exploration of new theories, materials, and technologies. The SSA Architecture
Summer Career Lab will expose students to college level architectural study, providing an important
advantage over those pursuing the major without this experience. Additionally, students will be able
to develop an architectural portfolio, which will greatly help in preparing applications to both
undergraduate and graduate level professional schools. The four-week, SSA Summer Career Lab
provides students with the practical experience required to make an informed and meaningful
career choice.
Pre-College Level Courses: Open to high school juniors and seniors 16 years or older at the start of
the program. No prior experience in architecture or design necessary.
College and Adult Level Courses: Open to college students and adults 18 years or older at the start
of the program. No prior experience in architecture or design necessary.
