Ticket sales are not yet over, the raffle will be on January 15, 2013, but last year they were able to raise a little over The holiday season always brings $11,000. “This year we hope to meet, out the giving spirit among community if not exceed, last year’s numbers.” members and businesses in Citrus said Doty. Most business owners would be County. It’s not uncommon to see food drive boxes in bank lobbies or toy pleased with this contribution to the drive boxes in real estate offices. Most community, not Doty & the staff at businesses choose one specific charity High Octane. Doty received word that Citrus United Basket was in need of to aid over the holiday season. This year one local business gave bicycles, toys, and meals to provide to deeply to not one, not two, but four needy families this holiday season. So local charitable causes – in a major he went to task. Every night he would way. Farnham and Doty put their heads Octane when the families came to pick together and came up with the concept up their bicycles. Doty was still convinced his business to do a benefit concert; that was 2 years and 3 concerts ago. Last year could contribute more. On Friday Doty contacted Harley Davidson December 21, 2012 the day the world of Crystal River, whom graciously was supposed to end, High Octane agreed to donate a motorcycle to be Saloon hosted an End of the World raffled off. This year Harley agreed Party. Doty used this event to raise again. Between the benefit concert money for the Boys & Girls Clubs of held at High Octane in November and Citrus County. Partnering with Will the ticket sales from the raffle of the Wilson of Citrus Sports & Apparel, they made t-shirts for this event. All Page 6 proceeds went to the B&GC. Overall more than $800.00 was raised. Having made three major contributions to organizations in Citrus County, Doty and the staff at High Octane could’ve stopped there and been content. Not a chance. When tragic news broke the week before Christmas of a young family with two small children who lost their father, Doty and staff again went back to work. Donation jars were placed in High Octane and Doty personally purchased bicycles and Christmas presents to make sure these small children enjoyed a full Christmas despite their huge loss. Just because the holiday season is over, High Octane has no plans of stopping contributions to charities. On January 13, they will host the Ride & Rockfest 2013 to benefit Heartstrings for Heroes, an organization that gives the gift of music to veterans. Citrus County always opens its hearts and wallets to take care of those in need in our area, but High Octane and the Doty’s have gone above and beyond this holiday season. 2013 Harley Street Bob Raffle Limited Number of Tickets Still Available $50.00 each Can be purchased at High Octane Saloon Only 500 tickets will be sold Drawing on January 15, 2013 Pictured below is the 2013 Harley Davidson Street Bob that is being raffled away to benefit Shop with a Cop. The Heart of Citrus: Operation Welcome Home gives heroes welcome to returning service members Editor’s Note: Citrus County is home to hundreds of non-profit organizations. Each issue will feature a different non-profit that is active in our community. If you have suggestions of non-profits to feature, email your idea to [email protected] Some people are called to teach, some are called to lead. Others are called to serve and protect. An elite group of people are called to all of these and join our Armed Forces. Here in Citrus County we are blessed by a large group of men and women who do just that. Operation Welcome Home is an organization that welcomes home the members of our Armed Forces after they return from a tour of duty overseas. Whether it be a tour in Afghanistan or Iraq, Operation Welcome Home provides a true hero’s welcome to our local hometown heroes whom have served in the war on terrorism. Started by Barbara Mills in 2007, Operation Welcome Home helps our heroes adjust to civilian life once they return home. Local businesses contribute gift cards and services that are compiled into welcome home baskets given to each hero. Gift baskets overflow with items from local restaurants and businesses. In addition to the gift basket, Operation Welcome Home hosts welcome home parties for each hero. At these parties, typically held at an American Legion or VFW post, friends, family, veterans, and community members are invited out to thank the heroes for their service. Recently, Operation Welcome Home in partnership with the American Legion Post 155 hosted a Welcome Home ceremony for Lance Corporal Joshua Langston White. White was injured in Afghanistan in August of 2012, White lost both of his legs as a result of the accident. As in true Citrus County style, the months since the accident held a large number of fundraising events for White and his family. After spending several months recovering at Walter Reed in Bethesda, MD, White was finally allowed to return home to Citrus County for a few weeks around the holidays. The community response to White’s homecoming was so overwhelming that the welcome home party that was originally planned to be held at American Legion Post 155 was moved to the Crystal River Armory – a much larger facility. A motorcycle escort picked White up at his house and escorted him down to the Armory, past hundreds of onlookers waving flags and holding signs of support. Once inside the Armory, which was filled to almost standing room only, White was greeted with a standing ovation. Operation Welcome Home and Post 155 organized the ceremony. Veterans groups from across the county took turns presenting White with various gifts and heartfelt gratitude for his service and sacrifice. The Citrus County Board of County Commissioners presented him with the proclamation that made August 28, 2012, Joshua Langston White Day. Crystal River Mayor Jim Farley presented him with a key to the city. Barbara Mills with Operation Welcome Home presented White with his gift basket. Wal-Mart of Homosassa gave White and his family a gift card for groceries. One after another various groups, businesses, and community leaders took their turn to thank White for his service. It wasn’t just because White was injured in the line of duty; Operation Welcome Home organizes welcome home parties for each and every service member who returns from a tour on the war on terrorism. There really is nothing that we as civilians will ever be able to do to give a proper thank you and welcome home to those who fight for our freedom and safety, but Operation Welcome Home does a fantastic job of helping every Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine, and Coast Guard member get a hero’s welcome back into the community. Lecanto Hwy Beverly Hills, FL 34465 352-527-7250 Open Tuesday through Saturday 8:00am – 8:00pm Sunday 8:00am – 2:00pm Prices Range from $6.99 - $16.99 For a first time guest walking in the door at Skeet’s Bar-B-Que one would be impressed by the shiny floors, polished booths, mirrored walls, and nice décor. Long time locals are far more than impressed because prior to Skeet’s moving into the building it was a local dive bar for decades. The owners of Skeet’s did a complete overhaul of the interior to create such a warm and pleasant atmosphere. Having been open for less than three years, Skeet’s has become a welcome addition for diners in the Beverly Hills area and beyond. Serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner the menu focuses on Southern & Bar-B-Que cuisine. Large portions served by friendly wait staff are standard. Skeet’s takes typical menu items and kicks it up a notch. Delicious slow cooked pulled pork is available on a sandwich or a dinner plate, for a twist try it in an eggroll, on top of Loaded Potato Skins, or with some homemade slaw in a wrap. Jalapeno is added to southern cheese grits for a new take on an old favorite. Fried okra, mashed sweet potatoes, and red skin potato salad are a few of the “sidekicks” offered with sandwiches, wraps, and entrées. In addition to standard bar-b-que items like pulled pork, smoked beef brisket, chicken, and sliced turkey Skeet’s also serves burgers, salads, appetizers, and seafood. Their Signature Salad comes topped with dried cranberries, pecans, walnuts, almonds, tossed in a red wine vinaigrette. Skeet’s famous wings come in close to a dozen flavors, try 10 or 20. Daily specials and homemade soups are also offered, homemade gumbo is available every day. Lunch specials are served from 11:00am – 2:00pm on weekdays, happy hour on beer & wine runs 3:00pm to 6:00pm. Don’t skip the banana pancakes offered at breakfast. Three egg omelets are available stuffed with several options of toppings. Traditional Southern style biscuits and gravy remain popular with breakfast diners. On Tuesday nights, Skeet’s offers free kid’s meals with the purchase of an adult entrée. Throughout the year, Skeet’s plays host to the Skeet’s Family Club. These are special events for the entire family. Past events have included pancake breakfasts and afternoon puppet shows. Follow Skeet’s on Facebook for details on these special events. Skeet’s has a large community room connected to the restaurant which is available for meetings, private parties, and special occasions. Perhaps you are having a special event in your home or office, call Skeet’s for catering. No matter what brings you in to Skeet’s the fantastic food and friendly service will bring you back for a return trip.
