We have been talking about the Federation trail maps for a few years now and we are getting closer to finalizing them every day. These maps will contain advertising space that local businesses will be able to use to promote their products and services to our target audience. As you may know, Acadie Média was mandated to oversee the production and sale of these ads and the printing of the seven regional ATV trail maps. The Region 1 map is complete with business advertisement. When an ad space is bought, it will remain on the map for two years and will also be added to the Federation website under the “Sponsors” tab. A Word from the Dungarvon ATV Club We at the Dungarvon ATV Club have enjoyed the summer. With the warm and sunny days and pleasant evenings ATVing was awesome. Our trails are in pretty good shape and pleasurable to ride, thanks to some dedicated people. In August we hosted the “Whoop n’ Driver” weekend which started on Friday the 24th with registration for various events including a poker run, a scavenger hunt, drag racing, and a sled pull to name a few and concluded on Sunday the 26th. Thanks go out to Ian Stewart and staff for a great weekend. People could bring their campers, trailers, tents and RV’s to stay for the weekend courtesy of Allan Washburn who owns the Power Track facility in Blackville. All in all, everyone enjoyed the event including music all day Saturday and dancing Saturday evening as well! A great time was enjoyed by all! We plan to organize a bigger and better event next year. Highway Usage Permit (HUP) for the Rusagonis ATV Club - Morrow Road Our club now has over 200 members and we are centrally located in New Brunswick with inter connecting trails throughout the province. We hold our regular meetings the third Wednesday of each month and usually have a good attendance. We can always use more volunteers for various duties but that too shall come to be. usage of Morrow Road to connect the trails of the As events are planned, I shall let the ATV newsletter staff know so all ATVers can come and enjoy our club’s hospitality and trails. Highway Usage Permit (HUP) The Hailes Brook Bridge, located at the entrance of the Musée forestier in Kedgwick, is now removed and the trail leading to the bridge is rerouted toward Route 17. A HUP was requested and approved by the Dept. of Transportation. New Trails for the Club VTT Haut-Madawaska The Club VTT Haut-Madawaska has done a lot of work on the trails in the St. Francois and Clair areas in 2012. They developed a new trail measuring over 4 km connecting the provincial trail to the town of Clair. They also installed a new shelter for those who want to do ATVing in the winter time. A second 4 km trail has been developed in the St. François area linking the provincial trail again to the village to avoid using the same trail as snowmobilers during the winter. This way, they can get to the gas stations and the local convenience store. They also had to build a bridge to cross a stream on the St. François trail. The club foresees adding a trail in the Lake Baker area in the near future for those who would like ride their ATV during the winter. Great Partnership to Improve the Turkey Hollow Trail The Sussex Valley All-Terrain Vehicle Club in partnership with the Kennebecasis Watershed Restoration Committee and with support from the NB Wildlife Trust Fund recently joined forces to enhance the aquatic habitat along Cedar Camp Brook by improving the conditions and alignment of the Turkey Hollow Trail. The project, which started in mid-August and was completed on September 14, consisted in placing log barriers to keep the stream from eroding the trail. In addition, a bridge was built to span the log barriers, two sections of the trail were rerouted to separate them from the stream, and two other sections of the damaged trail were repaired as well. Thanks are in order for the Kennebecasis Watershed staff, the ATV club volunteers and Sussex Rental for the equipment rental. ATV Safety Training A message from the Chief Instructor The Federation will soon launch its ATV safety campaign bearing the message: Get the gear! Get trained! Get riding! The main thrust of this campaign is the distribution of key rings and other advertising items carrying the above message, to all ATV dealers in the province who will distribute the items to their customers. The message will also air on the radio to encourage all ATV owners to register for a safety training course by using the Federation’s website: www.nbatving.com. Do not forget… Get the gear! Get trained! Get riding! Message du Président I have a hard time believing that our government has not yet responded to a number of our major issues. We are at the end of September and nothing concrete has been done by our elected officials. You probably remember the messages I communicated to you last July following the important meeting held at the office of Premier Alward that included the premier, the Minister of Natural Resources, the Minister of Transportation and several officials from various departments. Well, I have to be honest with you and tell you that in my opinion no progress has been made with respect to the issues discussed at that meeting. Several officials with whom we work cooperatively tell us that they are moving forward on a number of files. Unfortunately, I do not believe that story in light of the fact that we have heard the same old song and dance over the last ten years. It is now very difficult to trust anyone, because of the history of unfulfilled commitments and broken promises from politicians and even from government officials. To summarize, the following important issues are outstanding: Trail Permits A financial plan for the development of trails Recognition and promotion of ATVing as a tourism product DNR and DOT approvals for trails Legislative changes necessary for the proper management of our activity I think these requests are realistic and achievable without a huge influx of government funds. Our requests are similar to those of other organizations that want to promote their activities whether they are social, economic, sport, cultural or otherwise. I believe that the economic impact generated by our activity in New Brunswick justifies increased support from our government. The question I have been asking myself for several years is the following: why are we not treated equitably, like other trail organizations, by politicians? Why do we have to constantly defend our position in light of injustices? If I'm not mistaken, the New Brunswick Trails Council, which represents the interests of non-motorized users, is not investing in our joint trails and when it does, funds from the province are used which, by the way, also cover their operating expenses. And if I remember correctly, the New Brunswick Federation of Snowmobile Clubs also receives considerable financial support from the province to promote their activity. I have come to believe that if things do not move forward, we will consider taking legal action in order to be heard. This would not be the preferred course of action, but I sincerely believe that if nothing changes in the coming months, we will be forced to consider this option! In light of the fact that the province of Quebec honors volunteers who annually contribute to the development of the ATV activity in that province, one wonders if a similar event will ever see the light of day in New Brunswick! Thank You CFMoto! What more can I say about CFMOTO’s Snyper600, side-by-side I drove recently to discover new trails. After a run of more than 240 km in the woods of the Green River, in northwestern New Brunswick, we were very surprised by its great handling capability on the trails. At one point, on an appropriate trail, we reached 94 km/hour! This is quite surprising for a 600 cc. At this speed, the vehicle was quite stable and we did not encounter any looseness in the steering column or vibrations. It goes without saying that I do not recommend this practice to anyone, because the only reason that we have reached this speed was to evaluate its performance. Many users we met on the trails when we stopped for a break, especially groups from the province of Quebec visiting the region, were intrigued by this new model of side-by-side. Most were surprised that despite its small engine size, in this case more than a few cc then a normal ATV, this vehicle can ride on almost all the trails normally used by a regular ATV. With that, I say so long for now as other trails beckon and I will be back next month with other comments on this vehicle and its performance on the trails. Daniel Boucher, President Please do not hesitate to contact the Federation Office if you wish to see your event announced in our next newsletter. We also welcome any new ideas or special requests! The Federation aims to inform their ATV community. Page 7
