CEO Defends Pregnancy Center

conversation at the reception desk,” said
Angela Bennett, CEO of the Santa
Clarita Valley Pregnancy Center, who claimed she fell victim to false allegations in a recent column
questioning the accuracy of information and integrity of her clinic.
Laura Holton, writer for a local Santa Clarita area magazine, entered the SCV Pregnancy Center
minutes before closing, looking to receive information about sexually transmitted disease and teen
pregnancy in the Santa Clarita Valley.
In response to the recent shooting at a historic black church in
Charleston, South Carolina – perpetuated by white supremacist and Confederate flag admirer Dylann Roof – South
Carolina’s legislature, at press time, is debating a bill to
permanently remove the Confederate flag from State Capitol
grounds, where it currently flies.
Bennett greeted Holton at the front desk, slightly put off by the conspicuous demeanor of the
visitor.Holton asked about STD testing, and being a few minutes prior to closing, Bennett advised
her that they were unable to see her at the time and an appointment could be made for more
information.
But, the appointment was not made and, based on that brief encounter, Holton wrote an editorial
entitled “The Venus Flytrap,” where she accused the pregnancy center of issuing false advertising
and inaccurate medical information. Prior to her appearance at the clinic, Holton had emailed
Bennett a series of questions and set up an interview, but then cancelled and did not use the
interview responses in her editorial piece.
In the article, Holton states that the SCV Pregnancy Center fails to be transparent with its pro-life
status and is not a “comprehensive family-planning center,” though the clinic clearly states on both
its website and corporate documents that the pregnancy center’s services do not include providing
abortions or abortifacients (referring most often to drugs that cause abortions). The clinic specializes in providing early pregnancy diagnostics and evidence-based sexual information, education,
and risk prevention, according to Bennett.

The issue is a divisive one in that state. A November poll from
Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina found that
73 percent of that state’s white population said the flag
should continue flying, while 61 percent of black residents
said it should come down.
The flag’s fate has been commented on by public figures
around the country, with President Obama arguing that its
removal would be a “modest, but meaningful” step towards
improving race relations.

Curfew: Keeping the Youth in Line

Every teenager in Santa Clarita knows
that to live and breathe in the armpit
between the Antelope Valley and Los
Angeles is a gift from the heavens – a precious allowance that gives off the corporate aroma of a generation.
in Santa Clarita, it’s just not the same. If
we can’t target people in dark, oversized
hoodies with cargo shorts, then we might
as well just turn in our neighborhood
watch vests and lease a townhome somewhere else.
But what makes this city so great are the
humbling restrictions on our youth. I
mean, without soul-crushing regulations,
how are we supposed to grow up into
responsible adults? And that’s exactly
what our City Council had in mind when
adopting the golden rule in 1997: The
Curfew Ordinance.
Besides, a little martial law never hurt

would be shoveling Slurpees at Central
Park in the wee hours of the morning,
much like they do in other booming cities
with lots of activities for young people.
And that is exactly what the city saved us
from – credit card-stealing, bloodthirsty
hooligans of the night, knocking over
garbage bins with skateboard wheels of
destruction.
But, a curfew also ensures that fundamental profiling is still prevalent in our
community. Because, without profiling
youth in line like nobody’s business. The
youth are our future, and we can’t let
them out when it is dark outside, because
Lancaster is not that far away: it is just
too risky.

But don’t you worry – curfews bring
families together – in court. If a
youngin’ decides to ruin his future by
loitering outside of Pier-1 Imports at
night, he will be issued a citation: an
invitation, if you will. An invitation
to spend quality time with a parent
testifying in a court of law. Turning
lemons into lemonade is what our
legal system was founded on.
A fine of $200 may seem like a hefty
fee, but the fear of losing an iPhone

Feedback from residents of the Santa Clarita Valley
are sought at a meeting concerning the opening of the
Canyon Country Community Center. The City of Santa
Clarita will host its second public workshop to discuss the
facility’s master development plan on Wednesday, July 15
from 6-7:45 p.m. in the Community Room at the Canyon
Country Jo Anne Darcy Library, located at 18601 Soledad
Canyon Road. No RSVP is needed to attend.
The public is invited to shop to the music free of charge at two locations in the Santa
Clarita Valley on Friday nights.
A public engagement process completed in the spring of
2015 generated a conceptual floor plan for the proposed
20,000-square-foot community center facility, which will
be located on a recently purchased 6.5-acre site at Soledad
Canyon Road and Sierra Highway. Following the first
public workshop, the project architects are returning to
present a draft concept plan based on feedback received
to date. The goal of the workshop is to collect any
additional thoughts and ideas from members of the public
for the exterior improvements that will surround the new
community center facility.

Construction
on City’s Webcam
The widening of the Golden Valley Road Bridge over the
14 Fwy is a project that residents – at least those on the east
side of the SCV – have been waiting for.
Now that the wait is over, the watch is on, and the City of
Santa Clarita has responded with a live webcam, whereby
residents can watch the construction progress of the project
from their web browsers. The Golden Valley Road Bridge
Widening Construction Cam is available 24/7 on the City’s
website, Santa-clarita.com.
The webcam displays a new photo of the construction
site every 30 minutes and is positioned to view the City’s
Golden Valley Road Bridge project site at State Route 14.
Site visitors have the option to scroll through previous
image captures by date or time, compare images and share
them directly from the site.
The $11 million Golden Valley Road Bridge widening
project will add an additional two lanes of travel, one in
each direction, for a total of four through lanes on the
bridge, as well as a dedicated left turn lane to access the
southbound State Route 14 and two left turn lanes to access
the northbound State Route 14.
This project will also add a pedestrian walkway on the
north side of the bridge and a bike path on the south side
of the bridge.
The Valencia Marketplace on Newhall Ranch Road hosts a variety of bands each summer
that appear on Friday nights just for the free listening pleasure of shoppers. The groups
are set up next to Starbucks in Valencia Marketplace and the concerts begin at 6 p.m. For

It’s summer, which means it’s time for the
City of Santa Clarita’s Concerts in the Park,
presented by First Entertainment Credit
Union. Now in its 26th year, the line-up has
a diverse set of all-new acts, including awardwinning tribute bands highlighting some of
the top genres and artists of all time. The
free, annual concert series kicks off at 7 p.m.
this Saturday, July 11, 2015 in Central Park,
located at 27150 Bouquet Canyon Road.
Joel the Band will treat audiences to Billy
Joel covers at this Saturday’s show. Fresh off
the national tour of the Tony Award-winning
rock musical “Movin’ Out,” Piano Man Kyle
Martin and his fellow musicians will light up
the Central Park stage with premier rock and
roll.
The series continues on July 18 with Marie
Wise-Hawkins, a recent local and state
champion in the world’s largest country music
talent competition, Country Showdown. Her
performances of both original and modern
country songs will have audience members
line-dancing all night long.
On July 25, The Pettybreakers will recreate
the sights, sounds and concert experience of a
Tom Petty concert in Central Park with all the
hits – “American Girl,” “Break Down,” “Free
Fallin’” and “Mary Jane’s Last Dance.”
The webcam is live on the City’s website now and will
remain in place for the duration of the construction, which
is expected to be completed by July of 2016.

AirPlay will bring the ‘90s back to Santa
Clarita on August 8 with high-energy
performances of upbeat dance numbers
played on radio waves from the 1990s to
today. Lively, choreographed dances will
entertain Concerts in the Park attendees.
Underground American rockabilly will rock
Central Park on August 15 with Three Bad
Jacks. Selling out rooms from Hollywood to
New York City, the hot trio displays a mastery
of big beat heritage with a rebel spirit.
The familiar sounds of Earth, Wind and Fire
will delight audiences when Kalimba takes
the stage on August 22. With the combination
of lead vocalist Thomas “Chazz” Smith and
drummer Jeff Haile, Kalimba offers all eyes
and ears their lively renditions of the band’s
popular classics.
Finally, on August 29, the concert series
culminates with Mirage – Visions of
Fleetwood Mac. The five-piece band recreates
the superstar group with vocalist Michelle
Tyler, whose performances were praised by
Stevie Nicks herself.
In anticipation of this year’s summer
concerts, attendees are encouraged to arrive
early to set up chairs and enjoy a selection of
various food vendors. Out of consideration
for others, guests cannot reserve areas by
staking or roping. Umbrellas and canopies
are welcome, but must be disassembled before
show time.

Karma: When the
Hackers Get Hacked
Although much of my commentary keeps a separation between defense, politics
and business, sometimes the lines between those industries become blurred.

brings yet another indication that, whatever we do as citizens, our information isn’t
safe. Not only does the software provided to governments by Hacking Team allow
these governments to intrude in their people’s data surreptitiously in the form of
malware, but they also allow these agencies and governments to access your data
even if it’s been encrypted.
Because this company sold hacking software to governments, allowing them to dig
into the personal lives, data and emails of their citizens.
And unfortunately, Hacking Team is far from alone. As the age of cybersecurity
becomes more evident in our world and the advent of cyberwar becomes more of

Letter to the Publisher
Mr. Sutton,
Reading your rant on gay marriage makes for many
concerns on my end. I understand and applaud
your respect for your gay employees and workers. I
want you to know I am a straight man who writes
this reply to you and that I have been acquainted
with several gay, lesbian, and transgender folk. Time
and time again I hear from them their concerns for
discrimination and violence that is done to them;
perhaps more important, however, is how the word
of God does not match up with their ideals or their
beliefs.
When you believe that “the Bible is truly God’s
spoken word,” you are not alone in these beliefs.
Our country is built upon a mish-mash of different
opinions and beliefs; thanks to our policies we come
to pride ourselves as Americans on free speech,
free press, and free opportunities for all. Yet a good
chunk of people have said to me that America is
God’s land, that this is where the Heavenly Father
inspired America’s Founding Fathers to adopt the
ideas and principles that went into our Constitution.
There are people I have met who do not believe this.
However, seeing as we have a Christian president,
what is to be said? We have a president who supports LGBT rights, and I am sure that you do too,
Mr. Sutton; yet there are people who do not support
them under the perspective that everyone needs to
abide by “God’s spoken word.”
“You know your readers will be expecting something.” Yes—this is true. I am simply respecting the
readers when I say that there are Christians who are
LGBT and still come to find what they consider to
be His love for them and presenting this complement
in addition to your current rant.
I do not have children, I am merely a college
student, but I have heard from parents how they
like to raise their children Christian, regardless of
denomination, because of the good virtues that the
Church establishes. I was raised Mormon by my
parents and by my free will I choose to leave the
faith when I was 16; I don’t regret that choice, I am
not a Christian nor do I belong to any faith but my
own towards this timely world. Your God says good
things that should form principles for those who
aspire to live out good lives. But, at some point, we
have to admit that isn’t possible—it’s an ideal to live
up to, but one that cannot be achieved as long as we
are trying to impose Christianity or any other belief
system onto others.

change even as Pope Francis recently did?
“No matter…what side of the spiritual fence you
stand on, no one will know the consequences of
anything we think and do here on Earth until after
we take our last breath. At that point, each and
every one of us will find out one way or the other.”
This is what I am responding to—those who ruled
in favor of gay marriage respected making life better
for those living on Earth. We know the consequences of what we think when we look and see hatred
bottled up in the country as ministers leave churches
because they refuse to marry gays and lesbians. Or
even around the world when we look at the Cabrerra
couple in Australia that looks to getting a divorce
and killing their children if same-sex marriage becomes a reality. The Church aspires good values, but
it mocks itself when people refuse tolerance towards
the LGBT community; most are tolerant, most respect these people, but it is “God’s word” and its interpretation that drives people to extremes, whether
it is to violence, to discrimination, to suppression, or

Maybe turning “to Jesus for forgiveness and help”

need to do (John Piper quote). For me, at least, I
plead myself not guilty. I am only guilty for not
respecting my friends, for not living according to
this world’s beauty and not sharing this with others.
I am not guilty for the hatred of my ancestors or for
the death of the man on the cross that so many have
come to believe; instead I can listen to him, get the
meaning of his words, thank him, and be inspired by
my world now. I don’t have to indoctrinate myself to
his words or to others. I need to show respect. But I
don’t have to obey them, or if I do obey them to the
printed letter like some do too literally.
I respond to your article, Mr. Sutton, because to
have your belief and for me to have mine is not
enough to protect LGBT people from the pains and
woes that are to arise from the current rebellion
Christians propose as a result of the Supreme Court
ruling. Bill O’Reilly would say that the Supreme
Court is wrong. Don’t listen to the Supreme Court,
go to the church and be told what marriage is—respect the church, respect what marriage is to the
church. Some say to call “marriage” between two
people of the same sex “a civil union,” but not
“marriage” as this defiles the words of God. It is as
Mark Sandlin says: To call homosexuality a sin is
for you “to have to admit that you are a sinner for
Mr. Sutton, I thank you for your words on the matter of gay marriage. While I do not comment on the
political rant below your position on gay marriage,
I only have to say that the political and the religious
are closely connected. God’s word can become
policy, whether it is the actual implementation of
God’s words into law or inspiration from the Lord
onto whatever laws may be going through Congress
at the moment. Americans can both be religious and
free to think for themselves. Let Americans think,
but let’s not have this country become only “tolerant” of our own LGBT brothers and sisters; we have
to include them as we have done for everyone into
the interpretation of “God’s word,” and as we have
done for everyone else, we need to allow them to
have families and kids as others have been able to do
before them.

I Rant, You Decide
They’re Just Freaking Words!
The rock band Foo Fighters have a line in a song
that goes “They’re just freaking words!” (“freaking”
paraphrased, if you know what I mean). They really
are just stupid words (can a word be stupid?). Why
are so many so worked up about words people say?
Why do so many condemn people because of words
they disagree with? Why do words evoke such anger
and hate towards people? Whatever happened to
freedom of speech without persecution?
There are so many out there that hate Rush
Limbaugh (especially Sylvia Turner) because of the
words he says, yet they don’t recognize the millions
of dollars he has raised and donated for charity. Me
thinks what really matters is what’s in a person’s
heart that leads to their actions and that’s where our
concern should lie. This day and age of political
correctness makes blood want to spurt out of my
eyes. It has gotten so ridiculous it makes me want to
spew, shout and write any freaking words I want, just
to piss people off! Wait a minute – it happens all the
time.
Trump & Messina:
Both The Donald and Joe Messina (Hart School
District board member and radio show host) are
causing people to throw up all over themselves for
opinions they have expressed.
Donald Trump’s mere mention of the type of people
who cross our border illegally has set off a fire storm
that you would think is actually catching people’s
pants on fire. All the guy said is that some of them
are rapists and drug runners. Oh my gosh, that is
the most hateful, disrespectful thing I have ever
heard! Millions of people are going to be harmed
by that statement, so much so that Trump should
be punished in any form possible. Never mind that
what he said is true (just pay attention to recent
horrific crimes committed by illegals). Never mind
that people he spoke of are breaking our law to begin
with. And never mind that his words did not affect
anything in this world one iota!
The Mayor of New York City said, “Trump’s
comments do not represent the values that define us
as New Yorkers.” Trump didn’t say a word about
New Yorkers, Mr. de Blasio, and now you’re going
to review contracts your city has with him? You may
cancel contracts that are beneficial to your citizens
because of words he said? Sir, I’ve heard words
you’ve said about police, and if they thought like you
do, one of them would have shot you right between
the eyes by now.

Locally, Joe Messina is catching all kinds of heck for
"Loving God...
Loving Others"
words he posted regarding the Supreme Court ruling
on gay marriage. Oh my, you would have thought he
called the board president a dumb bitch or our mayor
a mindless broad, or even that every LGBT should
be shot. No, all he expressed was his opinion on the
ruling, as millions did last week. Here are some of
the comments made about him because he expressed
his right to free speech (there were dozens more):
“We have an outwardly hateful person sitting on our local
SCHOOL BOARD in Santa Clarita. Shame! In light of
yesterday’s change in America, I call on Joe Messina to
either vow to begin to learn how to love all Americans and
begin the healing process with LGBT students, or resign
from our children’s School Board immediately. His choice.”
“For how long have they denied being hateful homophobes?
This will smoke them out. OFF THE SCHOOL BOARD!”
“Joe wants his religion to be law, just like ISIS does.”
“What an over privileged, decadent, pompous, pretentious,
pampered, obese talking head.”
“Your first words are insulting. As an adult, I learned that
if I want people to listen, insults are not a great way to
start. I am very happy you wrote this because, I am going
to do everything I can to make sure you are not on the
school board.”

without some oppressive bureaucracy to call the shots.

Unbelievable. These comments represent complete

expressing. They come off as foolish with comments
like this, if Messina’s opinions represent his spiritual
heart then these comments represent their hateful
hearts.
Get a grip, people, do you really think his opinion
on this matter is going to flow down to violate any
student’s rights or wellbeing? If I were to go rant crap
crazy on a board member for coming out in support
of the ruling, you would go nuts on me for doing the
very same thing you did!
This type of political correctness crap is how
oppression of free speech starts and ends, with good
people getting horribly persecuted for only the words
they spoke.

rights issues has already risen to the surface. These
cases were going on before the ruling, but you can
imagine the concern that these types of cases are

-In Oregon, a judge ruled that owners of a bake shop
pay $135,000 in damages to a lesbian couple for
their emotional suffering after the owners refused to
provide cake service for their wedding. If they have
to pay this fine, the bakery will go out of business.
-In Colorado, a bakery is facing a similar fate for the
same thing.
Mr. President, the answer is not government. Conversely,
the problem is government, a government that has doubled
the national debt, increased unemployment, lowered takehome pay, increased food stamp participation and disability
claims and introduced socialized medicine.
You support teachers unions, which take political activism
more seriously than education.
You misled the American people about your stand on
marriage being between a man and woman, and continue
to when it is politically expedient for you to do so.
You surround yourself with inexperienced ideologues and
political yes men and take the advice of individuals who are
swimming in waters way too deep for them.

“There are all sorts of diseases related to the fecal waste left behind by dogs;
giardia, coccidia and parvovirus are just a few,” he said. “A lot of people
will actually let the waste pile up for weeks at a time before finding the time
to get out and take care of it, and those are our main customers. We want
to help those people prevent their dogs from getting sick, as well as their
families.”
Pet owners themselves, the Petersens first realized the growing need for this
type of service while cleaning up after their own dogs.
“We came up with it one day while taking care of my own backyard and
wishing that there was some kind of service that would provide a relief
from this,” Petersen said. “I did some research and I found that there were
some, but there weren’t many in the Santa Clarita Valley. … This seemed
like a great idea, and my wife was on-board 100 percent, so we went for it.”
While Doggy Repooval mostly provides services for private residences,

treat everyone exactly as we would want to be treated, whether it’s from the
service or the payment options that we have available. Chances are, you’re
not going to come across a situation where we can’t solve a problem that

Library Summer Reading Program Sign Ups
The Santa Clarita Public Library invites readers of all ages to participate
in the free 2015 “Read to the Rhythm” Summer Reading Program.
Registration opened on June 8, but sign ups continue. The program runs

The “Read to the Rhythm” program, presented in partnership with the
Friends of Santa Clarita Public Library, encourages residents to celebrate
literature and music with a variety of summer programming available at
the Canyon Country Jo Anne Darcy, Valencia and Old Town Newhall

Although a few weeks into the program, there are still many specially
themed story times and literary character programs, DIY crafts, dance
classes, musical performances and other events scheduled for the month of

Families participating in the program won’t want to miss Rusty presents
Let’s Go Save the Butterflies, a special “Rhythm ‘Round the City” event
on July 17, 2015 at 6:00 p.m., held off-site at West Ranch High School
Auditorium, located at 26255 Valencia Boulevard in Stevenson Ranch.
Performed by Christopher Yates, this interactive educational program
teaches the audience about the science-related environmental challenges of
the great Butterfly Migration.
Readers may also join the Five Book Summer Challenge, which encourages
kids and adults to read five items this summer to be entered into drawings
for prizes. Once five reading items are logged, children grades first to sixth
will receive a free book from Barnes & Noble Valencia by showing their
Summer Reading Program certificate. Other prizes for kids and teens will
be raffled off to readers who completed the challenge.
On Saturday, July 25 at 10 a.m., the program will end in festive style with
a free Summer Reading Program Music Jamboree Finale at Newhall Park,
located at 24923 Newhall Avenue. The event will feature prize drawings,
sponsor booths, an award ceremony and live performances from The
Wacko Show, The Terns and Nathalia Palis.

Spotlight Arts Center

After-School Arts Program Inspires Creativity in SCV Youth
With summer almost halfway gone, Spotlight Arts Center staff
members are gearing up for their third year of free after-school arts
classes for SCV youth. Local children age 6 to 18 can choose from
more than two dozen different music, dance, theater and visual art
classes taught by art students and industry professionals.
The unique after-school program was created to provide a creative
outlet in a safe environment for the 14,500 teens living in the SCV
who will have at least five hours per day of unsupervised free time
when not in school, according to Spotlight Founder Lisa West.
“Recent years have seen a decrease in the number of after-school
arts programs designed to offer safe, engaging and constructive
environments for Los Angeles youth who lack adult supervision
during non-school hours,” she said. “The passage from adolescence
to adulthood for every teen should be a positive one. But for an
increasing number of youth, that is not the experience.”
While participation in programs like Spotlight’s can help deter
negative behaviors like alcohol and drug use, studies show that young
artists are also more likely to be recognized for academic achievement
and school attendance, be elected to class office, read for pleasure,
perform community service and win awards for essays or poems, West
added.
Because classes are sponsored by local businesses, students are asked
to “give back with gratitude” by volunteering for community service
projects, helping instill the value of giving back to the community and
helping others.
“This allows us to teach the kids how to respond with gratitude and
support their local community,” West said.
In addition to providing quality arts education for local youth, the
Spotlight after-school program also allows time for homework in a
study room with the help of volunteer teen mentors and professional
tutors.
“It is important to Spotlight that the youth living in this community
are provided with the opportunity to thrive, learn and express
themselves creatively,” West said.

Hero of the Week - Alexa Dell

started taking classes at Spotlight Arts
Center when she was 9 years old and in
search of a positive community of friends
who would accept and encourage her.
Over the last few years at Spotlight, Alexa
not only found the support she needed
but also took on the responsibility of
becoming the organization’s first Junior
High Ambassador.
“Alexa is an amazing leader and ambassador for the Spotlight program,”
said Lisa West, Spotlight’s founder. “She has been able to overcome her
own personal adversity and focus on giving to others. At a young age, she is
already helping and influencing the lives of her peers.”
As an ambassador, Alexa acts as a student leader and assists the program
instructors with acting, dance and art classes.
“At Spotlight I feel a lot more confident about myself,” she said. “The
people are different here. They don’t judge. Everyone is treated well here.
The teachers are encouraging and supportive. When I am having a bad day, I
can always count on my Spotlight family to support me.”

Male Athlete of the Week
Scott Ogrin
With only one year left at Valencia High School, Scott Ogrin has already made his mark on
the baseball program. He was selected to the All CIF Southern Section Division baseball first
team recently and led the Southern Section in hitting, with a .509 batting average and hits with
56.
“Scott had an amazing year,” said Valencia High School Baseball Coach Michael Killinger.
“He was a team leader in almost every category and was named to multiple all league, all
area, and all American teams this year. I’m so proud of his performance this year and I’m glad
I’ll see him again next year.”
Female Athlete of the Week - Mary Contreras
Castaic Woman Doubles Her Fun
When Mary Contreras of Castaic grabs a racket and heads to a local court
to hit balls, she gets double the pleasure that most tennis players get. That’s
because she’s learned to play ambidextrously.
She actually brings two rackets – both for her own use – because she
doesn’t just have the skill to lob tennis balls with both hands, she plays
with both rackets simultaneously. It’s a skill that she has learned over the
last eight years from her friend and tennis coach, Roger Garland.
What’s even more unusual than a woman refining a rare athletic ability in
her 50s is the fact that Contreras, now 62, actually learned the skill twice.
Two years ago, she had a severely detached retina and lost sight in her left
eye, so she had to go back to square one when she returned to the tennis
court.
“I kind of feel like I’m in a place now where I’ve actually learned it all
over again, with one eye,” says Contreras.
Both Contreras and Garland see a broad benefit to the unusual sport, in
addition to sheer enjoyment as a hobby.
“It’s helped me knowing that I can do this,” she says. “If people would just
try this sport … playing tennis with two rackets is so much fun.”

Ben’s Favorites
I thought I would take this opportunity to list my favorite restaurants here in
the Santa Clarita Valley. I have reviewed 75 restaurants for the Gazette, with
68 of those being here in the valley. Many have become and remain favorites
that I return to over and over again.
Prior to listing the restaurants by name, I will also let you know why they are
my favorites. I believe the restaurants should be clean and have courteous,
friendly and competent staff. The atmosphere should be one where the patrons are welcome and appreciated. A friendly and sincere greeting is always
meaningful.
Whether patronizing a theme or non-theme restaurant, there should be a
variety of food offered. The choices must be high in quality and presented in
an appetizing and pleasant manner. Of course, taste is of paramount importance. I also believe menus should be easy to read and provide accurate
descriptions of the offerings. Reasonable prices for the food that meet the
above criteria are readily accepted and cannot be disputed. If the restaurant is
a theme restaurant, the food should be representative of the theme.

The owners of my favorite local restaurants, as well as the staff members,
serve me very well and provide great service. The majority of the restaurants
I repeatedly patronize have earned 5 out of 5 acorns. The restaurants have
earned repeated patronization because they meet the criteria I believe is
important. Further, no matter if the restaurant is a bakery, sandwich shop,
high-end dinner house or any type of “eatery” on the spectrum, consistently
meeting the criteria is an accomplishment restaurant owners, managers and
staff can be proud of.
My Favorites; All Star Sports Grill, Backwoods Inn, Bagel Boyz, Bergie’s
Steakhouse, California Bakery and Café, Cousin’s Burgers, Eggs ‘N’ Things,
Egg Plantation, Halfway House Café, La Tradicion Mexican Restaurant,
Mom Can Cook, O’Sushi Japanese Restaurant, Route 66 Classic Grill, Sabor
Cocina Mexicana, Salt Creek Grille, The Social Restaurant and Martini Bar,
Tiny’s Submarine Sandwiches and Vincent Hill Station.
Service, too, is something I consider, as does everyone. I enjoy interacting
with a server who is attentive, timely and genuinely interested in our enjoying
a positive experience. Also, I prefer a server who is mindful of my needs, as
well as my privacy. Servers who are clean and neat in their appearance add
to an enjoyable dining experience. These strong and welcome attributes in a
server are always reflected in a generous gratuity.
I hope you have some of the same favorite restaurants as I do and that you
have other favorites that you patronize as well. I look forward to continuing my reviews of the fine and outstanding restaurants and developing more
favorites.
If the restaurant serves alcoholic beverages, I appreciate a server who is
knowledgeable about the beverages and provides patrons with those beverages
and other services in an appropriate manner.

There are certain people one likes to have around in case of an emergency,
and it’s usually a resourceful type with a calm, cool demeanor. Sometimes
you’re lucky enough to have a heavy-hitter like Stephanie Cornthwaite.
You might say that she is in the business of creating more of those calm, cool,
resourceful types you want to have around in an emergency. She offers classes
in almost every imaginable form of safety training, including basic CPR, first
aid and life support. Safety Steph regularly brings her expertise to professional
rescuers and healthcare providers, including paramedics, doctors and nurses
needing certification.
If you’re a safety “civilian,” so to speak, there’s a spot for you too. Cornthwaite will “custom design” the class you need, bringing her expertise onsite to
you and others looking to learn.
She teaches 3-4 classes a week, most of them at Home Care Services on Cinema Drive in Valencia, but she also travels to teach classes in corporate settings, driving as far north as Santa Barbara and as far east as San Bernardino.
Safety Steph is a nationally registered EMT, American Red Cross and
American Heart Association qualified instructor for CPR, first aid and AED
(Automated External Defibrillators). It doesn’t stop there – Cornthwaite has
other subject matter, including “blood-borne pathogens” and “wilderness/
remote first aid.”
Cornthwaite arrived in Santa Clarita two years ago, after living in England for
six years with her British husband, David. While in the UK, she was a volunteer instructor for the British Red Cross. She was born in the gold country
in Northern California, and later lived in Kenai, Alaska. The couple resides
in Valencia, and David Cornthwaite is an IT professional working in Beverly
Hills.
Stephanie Cornthwaite’s talents do not begin and end with safety course
instruction, however. While living in England, she worked as a professional
photographer, and she currently brings her vocal music talent to Church on
the Way in Valencia.
You may see Safety Steph wherever there’s a natural disaster, as she is the
community ambassador in Santa Clarita for the American Red Cross. And if
you choose to take one of her classes, some of the Red Cross certification fees
go to the Red Cross Disaster Fund.

LAPD’s Mental Health Evaluation Unit Good for the Community

The LAPD is comprised of about 10,000 officers
who fill a variety of roles. The officers most citizens
have contact with are likely patrolling the streets,
but there are other groups as well. You’ve probably
heard of the K-9 unit – officers who use police dogs
to sniff out drugs or help apprehend suspects, and
the S.W.A.T. Team – officers trained in heavy weapons. There is one unit that you may not have heard
of, but serves a vital service on the police force. It is
the mental health evaluation unit.

Were this situation to occur in another city with a
different police force, an officer’s first instinct may
be to arrest the man. However, LAPD officers are
required to call the mental health unit whenever
they encounter a situation like the one above. The
unit’s purpose is to deal with situations like this so
that street cops can get back to work more quickly,
while ensuring that the individual to whom they are
responding receives the care that he/she needs.
The mental health unit is comprised of 89 individuals, 61 of whom are police officers, while the other
28 are mental health workers from L.A. County.
Their duty is to assist officers on the streets when
they come into contact with individuals who may
have mental health issues. When an officer encounters someone who may not be of sound mental
health, the officer will call into the triage desk on
the 6th floor of the LAPD headquarters to determine if one of their clinician teams can assist.
Recently, the LAPD mental health unit received a
call from an officer who was responding to a report
about an elderly man who had urinated outside of
a bank in Los Angeles, and had then entered the

legal director, Peter Eliasberg, the LAPD is taking
the “correct approach” to situations like this. “The
goal is to make sure people who are mentally ill,
but are not a danger to the community, are given
treatment instead of just being carted off to jail.”
So far, the mental health unit has been successful in about two-thirds of the calls the teams have
received. The ideology behind the pairing of a
police officer and a county mental health worker is
that both professionals share communication that,
individually, they might not be privy to. The police
officer provides legal information, such as the
individual’s prior criminal record (if any), and the
mental health worker can evaluate the best course
of action for getting the person help.
The success the LAPD mental health unit has
achieved has prompted requests to train similar
units both in and out of the country over the past
decade. In cases where the mentally unstable are
suspected of low-grade, non-violent misdemeanors,
the unit is trained to divert individuals into treatment rather than arrest them. Felony offenders,
though, are still taken to jail. Even when individuals are taken to jail, the unit tracks them through
the system and, upon their release, will attempt to
reach out and get them treatment.

A 40-year-old aerospace program manager from Valencia was picked up for corporal injury on a spouse/
cohabitant, etc.
A 37-year-old construction worker from San Fernando
was arrested for cruelty to a child likely to produce
great bodily injury/death.
A 24-year-old Newhall man who refused to give his
occupation was charged with assault likely to produce
great bodily injury.
A 46-year-old janitor from Newhall, a 68-year-old Canyon Country man who works as general counsel and
a 42-year-old unemployed Valencia man were charged
with battery against a former spouse.
A 35-year-old network manager from Los Angeles was
picked up for assault with a deadly weapon, not a firearm, with great bodily injury. An unemployed 51-year-
old Valencia man was arrested for exhibiting/drawing
a deadly weapon, not a firearm. A 26-year-old assistant
manager from La Crescenta was picked up for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon/addict, etc.
An unemployed 42-year-old Valencia man was charged
with indecent exposure/illegal entry to occupy a dwelling. An unemployed 59-year-old Lancaster man was
brought up on charges of violating probation.
An unemployed 34-year-old Valencia man was arrested
for robbery. And a 29-year-old manager from Los
Angeles, a 28-year-old tile layer from Sunland and a
50-year-old unemployed Saugus woman were brought
in for theft of personal property.
An unemployed 19-year-old Newhall man was picked
up for shoplifting after a specified prior conviction.
And a 21-year-old unemployed Bakersfield man was
picked up for taking a vehicle without the owner’s
consent.

Motorist Repeatedly Crashes Vehicle into Newhall Building
A motorist suspected of repeatedly driving a white

Wednesday morning is being sought by Santa Clarita
Valley Sheriff ’s Station deputies, officials said. The
incident occurred around 12:50 a.m. Wednesday
morning at the 24000 block of Main Street, where
KHTS AM-1220 shares a building with Total Financial
Solutions.
“The vehicle rammed the front glass doors,” said Lt.
Rob Hahnlein. “He ran into it about four or five times
and then left in an unknown direction.”
While initial reports indicated it was KHTS that
sustained damage during the collision, radio station
owner Carl Goldman said that the vehicle actually
collided with the business next door.
“It impacted Total Financial Solutions’ section of the
building, which is still under construction,” Goldman
said. “It’s unfortunate what happened, and we’re lucky
no one was hurt.”
The damage to the building was minimal and repairs
were already underway Wednesday afternoon,
according to Arif Halaby, Total Financial Solutions’
owner.
“The windows didn’t even break, so it just caused the
aluminum casing to come loose,” he said, adding that
renovations are still on track to be completed by the
end of the month.

While there has been speculation that the crash
was deliberate, Halaby said it would be difficult for
someone to target his business because there is still no
signage on the building, so “there’s not a way to know
whose building it is.”
“It’s the time the bars were closing, so they think that
it was someone that had too much to drink,” Halaby
added.
The suspect had not been located as of press time
Wednesday afternoon, Hahnlein said, and the
investigation remains ongoing.

SCG: Many argue that the Confederacy
is America’s moral equivalent of the
Nazi Party; do you agree with this?
RM: It is always troublesome when
making comparisons with Nazis, so
overall I would say no. But there is one
important comparison. The Germans
have dealt with the fact that they have
ancestors who committed mass murder,
and I think they have done a great job
of doing that. They don’t pay tribute to
that. And we haven’t done that yet as a
society. With Reconstruction, we tried
to forgive the traitors to let the country
come together; but after 150 years, that
still isn’t working. The South needs to
come to terms with their ancestors the
way Germany has.
SCG: What would you say to the young
black man or woman who sees the continued honoring of noted Confederates,
and the Confederacy as a whole, by
their government, and who subsequently comes to the judgment that the powers that be in their society do not value
them as much as their white peers?
RM: We are seeing change, and you
know, there are many who are fighting
against that, but there are more fighting
with us. As long as we keep fighting together, there will be substantive change.
SCG: Some argue that it is okay to con-

RM: They are saying they are trying
to honor history, but they are actually
trying to re-write history. The Civil War
was about preserving slavery, and we
shouldn’t be honoring that. We should
remember it the way we remember the
holocaust.

SCG: When you see a Confederate flag,
what are your thoughts and why?
SCG: As a candidate for elected office,
how do you think we can all move
forward and progress on race issues in
America?
RM: By being really firm and sticking to
it, and really making change – not just
talking about it, but doing it.
SCG: In the LA Times it was revealed
that multiple schools in California are
named after Confederates. If elected to
the State Senate, would you advocate
for action to change the names of these
schools?
RM: A lot of that happens at other levels of government, but I would certainly
speak out for it; and if there was anything at the state level, I would certainly
want to act. We had the bill last year or
so about not selling Confederate flags
in museums run by the State, and we
KW: My immediate thought is racism
because of the fact that it is the Confederate flag and the confederacy was so
dead set on continuing slavery.
SCG: Some say if you rename buildings
and roads that are named after Confederates, you travel down the slippery
slope to re-naming almost everything,
including tributes to our founding fathers? Is this fear accurate in your view?
KW: I don’t think it is true. It isn’t accurate, because I think that by renaming
the roads and schools, it’s a way of acknowledging that what happened during the Confederacy and the way that
Africans and African Americans were
treated during slavery was absolutely
wrong. I don’t think that just taking
down the flag and renaming the roads is

enough, but I think it’s a very significant
step towards putting an end to racism.
SCG: William T. Thompson, the
designer of the Confederacy’s flag(s),
was very blunt in describing the purpose
behind the flag. He stated: “As a people
we are fighting to maintain the heavenly
ordained supremacy of the white man
over the inferior or colored race; a white
flag would thus be emblematical of our
cause…”. With this reasoning plainly
stated, do you feel there is any moral
way to stand up for the Confederate
flag?
KW: No, I don’t. After hearing that, I
think there is even less of a justification
in keeping the Confederate flag as a
way of honoring Confederate soldiers.
SCG: One could argue that there is a
hypocrisy in Northerners chastising
Southerners for honoring slave-holding
Confederates, while many buildings in
the North bear the names of Rockefeller, Morgan and Carnegie – men who
certainly did not treat their human labor
with the utmost compassion either.
Your thoughts?
KW: I totally agree. I think that’s absolutely true. We need to be very careful
about who and what we honor. That
includes looking back at what we’ve
honored and asking, “Is this who we
are as a people? Is this who we want to
be as a people? If that answer is no, it
needs to change.

Sports Highlights

Baseball
Hart High graduate Mike Montgomery is finally getting a chance to shine with
the Seattle Mariners. The 26-year-old rookie left-hander won his third game in a
row, 2-1, over the Oakland A’s on Sunday.
But it’s what he did in his previous two starts that have people talking. Montgomery threw back-to-back shutouts against the Kansas City Royals, the reigning American League champions, and the San Diego Padres. He is only the
fifth pitcher to throw a shutout within his first five major league starts. The last
pitcher to accomplish the feat was Kerry Wood for the Chicago Cubs in 1998.
He shut out the Royals, 7-0, for his first career shutout. Montgomery gave
up two hits and hit a batter to load the bases in the first inning. Two batters
reached base in the second inning before Montgomery struck out the side.
Montgomery was nearly perfect the rest of the way against the Royals. He
tossed a five-hitter.
He took a no-hitter into the seventh inning against the Padres. Yangervis Solarte
broke up the no-hit bid with a one-out double in the seventh. Montgomery
tossed a one-hitter, struck out seven, walked four and hit a batter. The Mariners
won the game, 5-0.
Mariners pitchers have thrown consecutive shutouts seven times. Randy Johnson threw three shutouts in a row in 1994. The last lefty Mariner to throw backto-back shutouts was Mark Langston in 1984.
W-League games over the weekend.
Kassi Massey has been leading the way. She scored three goals in the two games
against the Strikers.
The Blue Heat shut out the Strikers, 7-0, on Friday. Massey scores two goals in
the game. Samantha Pena had a goal and two assists.
Melissa Fernandez scored twice. Stacey Rodwell and Gabrielle Matulich also
scored for the Blue Heat. Kourtney Kutscher had two assists.
Massey scored the game-winner in Sunday’s game against the Strikers. The
Blue Heat won the game, 2-1. The Strikers took a 1-0 lead in the second half.
Fernandez tied the score with a goal in the 70th minute. Massey knocked in the
go-ahead goal in the 82nd minute.
The Blue Heat’s three-game winning streak started with a 5-0 shutout over the
Colorado Rush on June 28.
The Blue Heat are 4-5 after starting the season 1-5. Their next game is against
the Rush on Thursday.
Golf
Another golf star is on the rise in the Santa Clarita Valley.
Twelve major league rookies have thrown consecutive shutouts. The list
includes Dwight Gooden, Orel Hershiser, Fernando Valenzuela and Hideo
Nomo.
Against the A’s on Sunday, Montgomery extended his scoreless innings streak
to 20. Sam Fuld hit a solo home run, his first of the season, in the third inning
to give the A’s a 1-0 lead. Montgomery pitched into the sixth inning and left
with a one-run lead. He struck out two and walked one.
He improved to 4-2 and is definitely in the mix for American League Rookie of
the Year.
Swimming
Saugus High graduate Abbey Weitzeil won a gold medal at the World University Games in Korea as part of the 400-meter freestyle relay team for the United
States on Sunday.
The team of Shannon Vreeland, Madeline Locus, Lia Neal and Weitzeil set
the University World Games record in 3 minutes, 38.12 seconds. The previous
record was 3 minutes, 38.15 seconds set by Russia in 2013.
Japan was second and won the silver medal at the World University Games in 3
minutes, 41.15 seconds. Russia won bronze in 3 minutes, 41.34 seconds.
Weitzeil is also entered in the 100-meter freestyle and the 50-meter freestyle at
the World University Games.
Soccer
The Santa Clarita Blue Heat women’s soccer team has turned its season around.
They have won three games in a row and swept the Arizona Strikers in a pair of
Valencia’s Zoe Campos finished in third place in the American Junior Golf Association Taylor Made-Adidas Junior All Star Tournament at Stonehenge Golf
Club in Indiana.
The 12-year-old was the first-round leader after shooting an even par 71.
She finished nine shots off the lead. Alisaundre Morallos from Lakewood,
Calif., won the tournament by six strokes over Katie Hallinan from Loveland,
Ohio.
Campos was 1-over par in the second round of the tournament. She was 8-over
in the third and final round.
Track & Field
Two runners from the Santa Clarita Valley are United States champions again.
Canyon High graduate Alysia Montano won the 800 meters at the USA Track
& Field Outdoor National Championships in Oregon.
Santa Clarita’s Allyson Felix won the 400 meters at the U.S. Nationals.
For Montano, it was her sixth national championship. She won her race in 1
minute, 59.15 seconds.
Felix won her second national title in the 400 meters and her 10th national title
overall.

Assemblyman Wilk Keynote Speaker at VIA Lunch
The public is invited to attend the next meeting of the Valley Industry Association, where
California Assemblyman Scott Wilk (R-Santa
Clarita) will present an update about political
affairs in Sacramento.
As the keynote speaker at the July 21 luncheon, held at the Valencia Country Club
beginning at 11:45 a.m., Assemblyman Wilk
will give his constituents in the 38th district an
update from the Capitol.
The state Legislature is in the midst of determining funding for transportation
and Medi-Cal costs, and those will likely be two highlight topics for Assemblyman Wilk. State officials have said that California’s highways and bridges are in
need of $59 billion worth of repairs. Additionally, the tax levied on health plans
that manage Medi-Cal – netting about $1.1 billion per year – will not be allowed
under new federal rules next year.
“We’re looking forward to having Assemblyman Wilk give us an update of
what’s going on in Sacramento, as well as what lawmakers’ decisions mean for
businesses here in the Santa Clarita Valley,” VIA President and CEO Kathy
Norris said. “As a new fiscal year begins, this luncheon will be a good opportunity for VIA members to stay abreast of what our elected officials are doing.”
In addition to the latest updates from VIA committees, the luncheon will
include a VIA Spotlight, which provides an opportunity for VIA member businesses to present overviews of what they do.
Reservations are required for the luncheon. Members who reserve by July 11
pay $45. After July 16, the cost is $50 if seats are still available. The cost for
non-members is $65. “No shows” or cancellations made less than 24 hours in
advance will be billed. There is a $10 surcharge for attendees without a reservation. The luncheon starts at 11:45 a.m. The Valencia Country Club is located
at 27330 N. Tourney Road. The luncheon is sponsored by the City of Santa
Clarita, LBW Insurance and Financial Services, UCLA Health, Poole and
