Set Up for Rossiter
Family
To offset costs for the Rossiter family following the
recent off-road vehicle accident at Rowher Flats,
where their daughter, Madeline, was killed and their
son, Daniel, 23, was critically injured, a funding page
has been created. Local residents are encouraged to
support the family by going to the GoFundMe site:
http://www.gofundme.com/rossiterfamily.
Lancaster 24-year-old Terries Steven Walter also lost
his life in the accident.
Both Madeline and Daniel graduated from Canyon
High School. Madeline was very involved in “Yes I

In a statement, Canyon’s Yes I Can leader, Bret Lieberman, sent a statement
regarding the GoFundMe effort. “On behalf of Yes I Can, it is with the most
humble of hearts that we ask for monetary donations to support the Rossiter
family to help cover the costs of memorial services for their daughter Madeline,
medical bills for their son Daniel and any other necessities they may need during
this time of need,” said Lieberman.
“The Rossiter family is very involved with the community. They have been
attending Higher Vision church and were extremely involved at Canyon High.
Madeline dedicated her life to the Yes I Can program at Canyon High School.
Madeline leaves behind her parents Jerry and Mary Jo, her brother Daniel and
soon to be sister-in-law Kristi Larasen, two sisters Samantha and Kayla and her

ep. Steve Knight (R-Palmdale)
recently announced that he will be
joining a Republican effort to help understand and resolve general issues that
exist between members of law enforcement and the communities they serve.
Knight will bring 18 years of experience
as a Los Angeles Police Department
officer to the Law Enforcement Task
Force, which was formed following
recent tensions between various police
departments and communities across
the United States. Eleven lawmakers
with backgrounds in law enforcement
will comprise the task force, and are set
to meet in the coming months to gather
information and offer recommendations
to local law enforcement agencies.
“Our goal is to make sure police departments have the resources they need and
information on the best practices available to them so that they can be effective in their communities,” Knight said.
The task force, which is backed by the
Republican Policy Committee, will hold
hearings in Washington, D.C. and in
locations across the country beginning

anta Clarita Valley Sheriff ’s Station officials hosted another “Coffee with the Captain” event Wednesday in Stevenson Ranch as part of
an ongoing community engagement
effort, Sheriff ’s Station officials said.
Captain Roosevelt Johnson of the
SCV Sheriff ’s Station joined community members at the Starbucks located
on the Old Road from 8 - 10 a.m. for
a cup of coffee and casual discussion
on a variety of topics related to the
Sheriff ’s Station.
“The Santa Clarita Valley is split up
into eight different zones, and it’s
my goal to get out to every zone and
talk to the community members,”
Johnson told KHTS AM-1220 in an
earlier interview.

Senator Pavley Recognizes
City of Santa Clarita for
‘Green’ Efforts
Last year Johnson successfully visited
all eight zones for “Coffee with the
Captain” events, and recently began
the process again in Canyon Country, where he met with more than
25 community members. While the
most common topic discussed at
these events is traffic, other common
topics include red light cameras,
the Los Angeles County Sheriff ’s
Department’s budget, an increase in
the hiring of deputies, what training
Sheriff ’s Station personnel receive on
a weekly basis, and how law enforcement officials handle situations
involving individuals with mental
health issues.
“These events are important because
of my goal to make sure that we
are doing community engagement,”
Johnson added. “It’s important for
the community members to see that
their Captain here at the Sheriff ’s
Station is out and about, meeting
with the community members to find
out what their specific concerns are,
allow them the opportunity to meet
their zone leader deputies and also to
get some feedback for how we are doing and how we can improve service
delivery to the community.”

OPINION
Lean to the Left
On Being a Man
Leaning Toward Liberty
I
read an article with an interesting
concept this week. In it, writer Peter
Weber discusses which political party
is the party of liberty. Members of
both parties would claim it begins and
ends with them.
Not so. While President Lincoln was
a Republican, and he was pivotal in
granting freedom for slaves, he was
not so supportive of the states’ rights
to secede. Fast forward to Ronald
Reagan, elected in 1980. Says Weber,
“That election ushered in the GOP as
we know it today — anti-tax, antispending, anti-regulation, aggressive
on foreign policy — and marks the
point at which conservatives were able
to convince Americans that their ideas
were boons to freedom.”
He points out some examples of liberty being on the side of Republicans,
such as in 1980, when the Republican
platform stated: “Republicans reject
the elitist notion that Americans must
be forced out of their cars. Instead,
we vigorously support the right of
personal mobility and freedom as
exemplified by the automobile.”
So the right wing wanted less government regulation, despite the fact that
the Party’s own President, Nixon,
began the Environmental Protection
Agency and signed the Clean Water
Act.
Anyway, Weber believes the balance
has shifted. There is, most obviously and most recently, the Supreme
Court’s decision recognizing a constitutional right to same-sex marriage,
which was denounced by Republicans.
And the socially conservative Republican platform has increasingly reduced
personal liberties. It pushed for a
constitutional amendment outlawing
abortion; rejected gay marriage and
adoption/foster parenting; sought limited choices in entertainment, claiming the industry was “waging a guerrilla war against American values.”
After 9/11 Republicans pushed
through the Patriot Act, including
covert domestic surveillance practices,
and the TSA got a lot more invasive.
And how about the same era’s Bushinitiated “No Child Left Behind”
standardized testing?
T
By Sylvia Turner
Really, right wingers
only want to
grant freedoms to get them more
wealth (hence, their reputation for being greedy). The Tea Party called for,
Weber points out, “no government
intervention in banking, the housing
market, and auto company collapses;
less government in health care markets; fewer gun ownership restrictions;
and … fewer taxes, since the Tea Partiers felt Taxed Enough Already.
In the Democrats’ corner, Clinton
declared that “the era of Big Government is over” in 1996. And when John
F. Kennedy was President, the federal
government increasingly sided with
black Americans fighting for basic
civil rights, and mandating freedom
from abject poverty.
FDR laid out four freedoms, including
“freedom from want” and “freedom
from fear.” Weber lists some of those
supported by the Left, including fear
of medical bankruptcy and fear of
harassment by people who antagonize
women or minorities. And he describes the personal liberties protected
by Democrats, “like marrying the
person you love or trusting that police
officers can’t harass or harm you with
impunity because of the color of your
skin.”
And more examples of liberties
protected by the Left, he says, include
“less invasive national security/surveillance state, greater choice regarding abortion and contraception, loosened marijuana laws, less restrictive
voting laws, less censorship of popular
entertainment, (and) more freedom of
movement for immigrants.”
Weber summarized that, though both
parties have had turns at being the
“liberty lovers,” the Democrats are
in the lead. He ends the article with
a thought-provoking take on things:
“To put it another way, Democrats
want to let you be the person you
are and Republicans want to get the
government out of your wallet. … It’s
the liberty to be yourself, make your
own decisions, and enjoy a reasonable
measure of privacy and a reasonable
hope for safety. Today, in 2015, the
party that comes closer to that ideal is
the Democratic Party.”

he last place I tend to look for
examples of what it means to be
a man is in movies (or any of today’s
pop culture for that matter). I’m not
sure if it’s just me, but when I look
around at society I see a culture that
does everything it can to fight against
masculinity, manhood and testosterone.
On the one hand, we see someone
like quarterback Tim Tebow, being
ridiculed and chastised by much
of the mainstream pop culture for
expressing his religious beliefs and
going to God first, while the same
group congratulates Bruce Jenner for
completely denying his manhood by
labeling him a hero.
I’m not sure if it’s because our generation is the first where divorce is
the norm, but having gone through
divorce and custody battles myself
and seeing firsthand just how unfairly
the family court system always sides
with the mother, I’d wager that a large
part of the shaming of manliness
has come as a result of male children
growing up without the influence of
their fathers (even when the fathers
want to be a part of their children’s
lives).
So, when I went to the movies last
night and saw “Jurassic World,” I was
very impressed. Not so much because
of the plot, story or writing (I don’t
think it’s too plausible that any insurance company or investors would
fund a Jurassic World after the dinos
got loose in Jurassic Park – the first
one), but rather, I’m impressed by one
character.
The character is named “Owen,” and
he’s played by Chris Pratt. Now, I
know Pratt didn’t write the lines or
create the character, but after seeing
the YouTube video of him teaching
his son the Pledge of Allegiance, and
then seeing this movie, I’m definitely
in his fan base.
But, the essence of his character,
Owen, is one of complete manliness,
one that we haven’t seen since John
Wayne or Humphrey Bogart a la
“Casablanca.” And it really got me
thinking about the lack of testosterone
and true class in our culture today.
The problem with real manliness
in our culture is that it seems to be
mischaracterized all too often, overlooking that a real man is multi-faceted, classy and agile (feeling just as
comfortable in work dungarees as in a
well-fitting suit). I’ve been fortunate to
spend my life around some amazing
men, and each has taught me something about the art of manliness.
I’m currently working on a book for
my son and other fathers searching
for advice to help their young sons
grow into real men, but felt it would
be good to share a few of my thoughts
and insights here about what makes
a man.
It’s not just being tough
Although being physically and
mentally tough are requirements for

manliness, they
aren’t the
only ones. By Robert Patrick Lewis
A real
man can spend all day working, fixing
or building, in backbreaking labor, or
sometimes just tinkering, and then
come home to be as gentle with the
woman he loves (whether it be wife,
girlfriend or daughter) as snowflakes
falling on a fresh field.
It’s always choosing the hard right over
the easy wrong
Each of us face decisions throughout our day where it would be much
easier to just lie, slack off or take the
easy route. But, a real man doesn’t
choose the path of least resistance just
to have an easy day. Part of being a
man means making the hard decisions for the best outcomes and doing
what’s best, not what’s easiest.
It’s understanding that slow and steady
wins the race
Speed and impatience has become a
huge part of our culture, and is one of
the largest factors I see as causing the
massive credit debt most Americans
now carry. A real man understands
that no matter what the speed, forward progress is still progress.
Whether it’s in your role as father,
husband, son or brother, a real man
always puts family first, and will go
to any lengths to help. Manliness has
become confused in many ways in
today’s society, and one that I have
personally battled with is the “as the
father, it’s my job to provide, which
means being in the office until late
every night.” Yes, I’m a workaholic,
and I want only the best for my family; but, a real man understands that if
you’re not spending time with them,
all the money in the world is worthless. Time is the most precious commodity to a real man, and he gives the
most of it to those he loves.
It’s leaving the world a better place than
you found it
There’s a reason the Boy Scouts teach
you to always leave a place in better
condition than you found it; it’s because this is an essential part of being
a man. As a father, I know my kids
are going to grow up in this world,
and so it’s my duty to do everything I
can to make it a better place for them.
If you consider yourself a man, this
should be a constant goal.
While these aren’t the only attributes
necessary for a real man, they are
some of the most important. I’ll keep
you updated on the release of my
book, “Words from a Father.” But,
until then, let’s do what we can to
bring (real) manliness back into our
culture. Our kids are depending on it.

Fox News and Grandchildren Don’t Mix
We just got back from spending four
days with our son’s family in Indiana
(the weather was nicer than here, by
the way), which includes our threeyear-old granddaughter and one-yearold grandson. Of course, they are the
cutest, most personable and adorable
kids you’ll ever meet. Before we left,
the sickening Planned Parenthood
videos were in full swing and the
dentist killing that lion in Africa
was breaking. Sitting on the plane,
pondering what to rant about this
week, I decided not to go with those
topics, as they were going to be beaten
into the ground by the time I got back.
As I’m playing with the grandkids
on the living room floor, I felt my
normal urge to check out Fox News
(much to the chagrin of my daughterin-law), not wanting to miss a thing
while away from home. Big mistake!
I saw the outrage of many over the
killing of the lion and new videos
of the Planned Parenthood doctors
taken undercover, without the type of
outrage the lion story got.
Sadness Instead of Ranting?
As I’m having the time of my life,
playing with those kids with an eye
and an ear to the TV, instead of my
usual anger at the completely upsidedown mess this nation has become,
molded by progressive, liberal, twisted
and sick philosophies, I actually
became sad. What on earth has our
society become when an accidental
shooting of an animal causes more
outrage than the selling of aborted
baby parts?
The dentist who did the shootings
had to go into hiding to protect his
life. He had to shut down his practice
to protect himself and his employees
from harm. Some left-wing nut job
actress gave out the guy’s address.
Those doctors and workers from
Planned Parenthood who were in
the videos talking about how to kill
babies, while preserving the right body
parts to sell, are the ones who should
have been vilified, not some dentist
who made a mistake that reportedly
wasn’t his fault.
What on earth has our society
become? As I’m looking at my
grandkids and seeing the sickness on
TV, I wondered how anyone could
want to do something to end a life as
precious as can be, let alone do it for
personal financial gain.
-I would cheapen human life as much
as possible, so that the life of animals
is valued more than human beings.
-I would dupe entire states into relying
on gambling for their state revenue.
What will it be like in 30 years when
my grandkids are adults? If this trend
continues as it has been, God help
them; it could be a society that is only
written about in futuristic books.
-I would convince people that
character is not an issue when it
comes to leadership.
Then Anger!
-I would attack the family, the
backbone of any nation.
Next was the vote in Congress to
defund this organization that has zero
reasons to be given $500 million a year
to help fund these barbaric acts!
So, what happens? Despite the
horrendous acts that were uncovered,
our President basically said, “No,
no, no, you can’t do that.” Then his
freaking left wing “ball-less” buddies
say the same thing and our impotent
Republican Senate leader, who has the
leadership and people skills of a cow,
couldn’t muster enough votes to get
the defunding bill to first base.
How can any senator with at least a
half brain, half of a conscience, half
a clue as to right and wrong, not see
that we shouldn’t spend a dime of
taxpayers’ money to support such
barbarianism? It is a true indication of
the depravity this nation is falling into,
when elected officials can’t or won’t
see absolute hideousness, and worse,
vote to keep funding it.
Of the Devil?
Have you seen this? (read the
following) It is attributed to the late
Paul Harvey, who supposedly wrote it
in the early ‘60s. No matter who wrote
it or when it was written, it sure hits
home, don’t it?
If I were the Devil . . .
-I would promote an attitude of
loving things and using people, instead
of the other way around.
- I would make it legal to take the life
of unborn babies.
"Loving God...
Loving Others"
-I would make divorce acceptable and
easy, even fashionable. If the family
crumbles, so does the nation.
-I would compel people to express
their most depraved fantasies on
canvas and movie screens, and I
would call it art.
-I would convince the people that
right and wrong are determined by a
few who call themselves authorities
and refer to their agenda as politically
correct.
-I would persuade people that the
church is irrelevant and out of date,
and the Bible is for the naïve.
-I would dull the minds of Christians,
and make them believe that prayer is
not important, and that faithfulness
and obedience are optional.
-I guess I would leave things pretty much
the way they are.

“The way you live, work, travel, retire,

going to change. Some of it in ways most
people do not expect. This period is going
to be particularly tough on seniors and
anyone relying on a fixed income or money
from the government.” (Ron Paul on

“This isn’t just a take-out-the-big-kid-onthe-block kind of invasion. They’re here
for most of our resources. We pissed off
most of the world, our bankers bankrupted
everyone and when we bailed them out
and destroyed the dollar, the people holding
our debts decided our money was no good,
but our oil, natural gas, minerals and such
definitely were. The second China realized
we couldn’t pay back the trillions of
dollars we owed them, the wheels went into
motion.” (From the book “The Pact”

“All the while, state sponsored Chinese and
Russian hackers have been working for the
past decade to learn how to take down our
energy grid and communication network.
Day one, the communications and energy
went down and the terror cells caused
chaos. The big boys, Russia and China,
started flying their troops and sailing their
troop transport ships as soon as the grid
was down and here we are.” (From the

Carousel Ranch
Disguising Therapy as Fun for
Local Disabled Children
A
t Carousel Ranch, disabled children build strength and find healing
every day while perched on the backs of therapy horses like Callie the
Belgian mare and Mookie the Icelandic pony. The vision of the dedicated
team at the ranch is simple: provide equestrian therapy to disabled children
while disguising that therapy as fun.
“The horse is an amazing motivator,” said Executive Director Denise Redmond. “Children simply do things here that they may not ordinarily do, as
they simply don’t see it as therapy. That’s the beauty of it—therapy disguised
as fun.”
Through a combination of gymnastics on a moving horse, called vaulting, and therapeutic horseback riding, the staff at Carousel Ranch combine
instruction in traditional horsemanship skills with concepts of physical
therapy to improve strength, balance
and self-esteem for physically and
mentally disabled children.
child’s specific needs and goals, and a small group of dedicated volunteers
are on-hand to help lead the horses and assist during therapy sessions.
SCV residents can see first-hand the ways Carousel Ranch is making a difference in the lives of disabled children at the annual “Heart of the West” event
set for Saturday Aug. 29, where children who receive equestrian therapy at
the ranch will perform demonstrations on horseback.
“During our children’s demonstration, guests are able to see first-hand how
their support makes a difference—literally one child at a time,” Redmond
said. “Amazing things happen every day at Carousel Ranch: kids shatter
doctors’ prognosis and expectations and get to feel what it is like to just fit
in; parents, instructors, staff members and volunteers exchange smiles and
experience overflowing hearts as
they watch and work with these
exceptional children. As guests
enjoy dinner under the stars, they
know that their generosity has a
huge effect on a child’s life.”
The result? A teenage girl confined
to a wheelchair can discover what
it feels like to walk for the first time
while sitting atop a horse. A little boy
who suffered a stroke before he was
born and has limited use of his right
side can build up his strength, perhaps
even enough to grip the handlebars of
a bicycle or catch a ball someday.
“The motion of the horse inherently
works the body in amazing ways,”
Redmond explained. “The horse’s movement causes an inherent response
from the child, relaxing muscles that are tight, increasing tone in muscles that
are weak and building balance, coordination and control, which in turn enables children to use their hands and arms, and to sit, stand and even walk.”
The benefits of equestrian therapy also go beyond the physical body, helping
create changes in behavior, attention span, self-esteem, confidence and social
skills, Redmond added.
“To an individual with a disability, horseback riding takes them into a new,
unexplored world, and provides a sense of independence and freedom that
defies their disability,” she said. “Therapeutic riding challenges our riders in
ways that they have seldom been challenged before.”
Every week about 80 children of all ages-- with disabilities that range from
cerebral palsy, mental retardation, autism, brain injury, stroke, learning disorders and emotional problems --come to the ranch for therapeutic riding sessions. Instructors create a unique and individualized program to meet each
For the first time, the event will
be held at the ranch itself, allowing guests to experience the
newest facilities and long-awaited
covered arena while they enjoy a
gourmet western dinner catered
by Salt Creek Grille, line dancing, photo booths, casino games,
a live and silent auction and
more.
“Not only is this event a lot of fun, with great food and auction items, it is
an event where literally every dollar that you spend goes toward serving the
children,” Redmond said. “When you are the highest bidder on an auction
item, you win, but a child wins too. Each casino ticket you buy, every drink
you order at the bar and every donation you make goes directly toward a
child’s therapy costs.”
She continued, “Carousel Ranch is a place where we ignore limitations and
focus on the things our children can and will do instead. We look toward the
future with optimism and hope, because we know that Carousel Ranch will
remain strong for years to come with … our friends, families and supporters
by our side.”

Restaurant Review
Firehouse Subs
L
ast Sunday in the late morning,
after a great hike in the Los
Padres National Forest, I stopped
at Firehouse Subs in Valencia.
The hike, while challenging, was
both rewarding and beautiful. I
was hungry and had heard good
comments about the shop, both the
décor and food.
I walked into Firehouse Subs and
observed the decorations, which
included firefighting equipment
and fire-related photos. The table
tops sport a Dalmatian pattern.
The place was spic and span, just
as one would imagine the kitchen
and dining area of a firehouse to
be. The staff, too, was welcoming,
cheerful, also neat and clean in
appearance.
The menu, obviously, offered
primarily sub sandwiches. There
were also offerings of salads, kids’
combos, fire house chili, platters of
cold cuts, box lunches and desserts.
All sounded appetizing.
From the many choices, I selected
the “Hot Turkey Salsa Verde Sub
Sandwich.” The sub consisted of
hot smoked turkey breast, Monterey jack cheese, Salsa Verde
sauce, lettuce, tomato and onion.
Very quickly, my sub was prepared
and nicely served to me. I found
the combination of foods plus the
sauce to be extremely delicious.
The food was satisfying and reasonably priced.
While reading the walls of Firehouse Subs I noticed the company
has a non-profit foundation, called
Firehouse Public Safety Foundation. It was founded in 2005 to
support fire, emergency medical
services and police organizations
throughout the United States. I
was curious about the foundation and “Googled” it when I got
home.
The foundation has and continues
to provide the following and much
more to organizations: life-saving
equipment, public safety education, scholarships and continuing
education, support for members of
the military and disaster preparedness and relief.

Sheriff’s Station Empowering Youth
to Combat Substance Abuse
by Robin Sandoval
A
new program to fight substance
abuse among local teens is being
launched by the Santa Clarita Sheriff ’s
Department. Beginning next month,
deputies will meet with teenagers
from grades 9-12 to discuss the harsh
realities of drugs and substance abuse.
It’s no secret that once a child reaches
their mid-to-late teens, peer pressure
and the increased availability of drugs
and narcotics can be too much for
some to overcome. The program goes
into great detail, using group discussions, lectures, videos and worksheets
to illustrate to students the harsh realities of drug addiction and attempt to
empower them to “just say no.”
Programs like this, as well as
D.A.R.E., which targets elementary
school students, have existed for years
to attempt to educate and dissuade
the youth of the country from getting
into drugs. Sadly, a lot of parents don’t
know that their children are on drugs
until they receive a phone call from
the jail informing them that their son
or daughter has been arrested on drug
charges. No parent wants to receive
this phone call, but it does happen
from time to time, and when it does,
parents are often caught completely
by surprise and unsure of what to do
next.
There are typically two schools of
thought when it comes to a son or
daughter being arrested on drug
charges. There’s the “tough love”
mentality, which typically includes allowing them to remain in jail and deal
with the consequences of their actions.
Then, there are those who want to get
their child out of jail as soon as possible and deal with the situation as a
family. Both have their merits, and depending on which option you choose,
the outcome can be quite different.
When someone is in police custody,
they have the “right to a fair and
speedy trial,” per the 6th Amendment
to the U.S. Constitution. Often, the
defendant will see a judge after about
two days, as long as they were not
arrested during a holiday weekend
when the courts are closed. Once
they’re in court, the judge will decide
whether or not to raise the bail, lower
it, keep it the same, or release the
defendant pending the trial. What
the judge decides will depend greatly
upon the circumstances in the crime(s)
the defendant was charged with, and
whether or not he or she has any prior
criminal record.
When parents choose to bail their
child out immediately, they have a few
different options. When someone is
bailed out, the “right to a speedy trial”
is waved, because they aren’t in police
custody anymore. They can immediately enroll their child in rehab, which,
depending on the severity of their
drug use, may be necessary. Additionally, attending rehab before the trial
can sometimes have an effect on the
judge’s decision (but always discuss it
with your lawyer). However, pushing
the trial back can cause problems if,
once bailed out, the defendant continues to use drugs or is re-arrested during this time. These incidents happen
so often they have a name: crime-bailcrime, and usually result in having the
defendant’s bail raised - sometimes
even doubled. Suffice it to say, having a child arrested on a drug charge
(or any charges, really) is a situation
nobody wants to be in.
The Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff ’s Station’s pilot program begins September
9, 2015 and ends November 10, 2015.
If you›d like to sign your child up, be
quick! The classes will be held at the
Santa Clarita Activities Center located

Disney Imagineering at
The ARTree
E
very month, The ARTree brings
to the community the talents of
individuals from different arenas of
creativity, and the “Speaker Series” guest
in August is no different. Michael Jung,
a producer and director at some of the
nation’s leading regional and children›s
theaters, will discuss details about his
career developing theatrical experiences
for Disney theme parks, cruise lines and
resorts.
Jung develops shows and parades showcasing characters from “The Lion King”
to “Finding Nemo,” and has been
involved with creating entertainment
programs enjoyed by millions of visitors.
F
You can hear from him at the meeting on Thursday, August 27, 2015 at
6:30pm in the Old Town Newhall
Library, 24500 Main Street in Newhall.
The series is presented by the CalArts
Community Arts Partnership (CAP) and
The City of Santa Clarita’s Thursdays @
Newhall program. For more information,

Single Mothers Outreach
Adds Social Work Students
A
local non-profit working to
stabilize single-parent families is
expanding its services. Single Mothers Outreach Director DaAnne Smith
and her staff members are garnering
the skills of students from California
State University, Northridge who are
in a graduate social work program.
They plan to take on four interns this
fall, including a second-year student.
SMO recently hired Digna Yepez, a
second-year intern from last year, as a
therapist. By expanding the opportunities for therapy to clients, they can
seek to relieve the many single parents
needing mental health services.
Aug 7 - Aug 13, 2015
or anyone who has wanted to
learn more about Santa Clarita,
they can get a virtual tour and have
ice cream with the Mayor. Next
week, on Saturday, August 15 from
1–2:30 p.m., Mayor Marsha McLean
is conducting a “Virtual City Tour
and Ice Cream Social” in the City
Council Chambers, on the first floor
of City Hall, located at 23920 Valencia Boulevard.
Visitors will get an overview of the
City of Santa Clarita’s aim to provide
and maintain a high quality of life for
its residents. She will discuss parks,
trails, open space, transportation
services, libraries, sports programs,
events and more via a “virtual tour.”
Ice cream with all the toppings will
be served from an ice cream truck, all
free of charge.
Additionally, patrons will have an
opportunity to collect information
about resources and events available
in the City. Representatives from
various city departments will be on
hand to answer questions. In order to
attend the event, residents must RSVP
to [email protected] in
advance.
For more information about the Mayor’s Virtual City Tour and Ice Cream
Social, contact Jessica Thompson at
(661) 255-4939 or [email protected].
Almost 80 percent of new parents
joining the SMO program are suffering from either anxiety or depression
or both, says Smith. They have had a
wait list of women seeking those kinds
of services.
With the increase in case workers,
SMO will be open longer hours to
meet needs. Beginning in September,
the office on Main Street in Old Town
Newhall will be open Monday - Friday
from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and will possibly
stay open late one night per week. For
more details, visit Singlemothersoutreach.org.

Sports Highlights
I
t has been the “girls of summer”
for athletes with roots in the Santa
Clarita Valley.
Saugus High graduate Abbey Weitzeil
and Canyon High graduate Alysia
Montano gave us a Summer Olympics preview at the World University
Games in Korea and the Pan American Games in Toronto.
West Ranch High graduate Janelle
Lindvall shined on the international
stage in softball at the Pan American
Games.
Valencia High graduate Alison Lee
is making some noise in her debut on
the LPGA tour.
Let’s start with Weitzeil.
The swimmer was selected as the Cal
Hi Sports Female Athlete of the Year
last week.
But, her accomplishments span well
beyond the prep sports scene.
She won a gold medal for Team USA
in the 4 x 100 meter freestyle relay at
the World University Games. She also
won a silver medal in the 100 meter
freestyle, a bronze medal with the 4 x
100 medley relay team and was fifth
in the 50 meter freestyle.
In her senior season at Saugus High,
she sets two national high school
records in swimming. She broke her
own records in the 50 meter freestyle
(21.64 seconds) and the 100 meter
freestyle (47.09 seconds).
She collected her seventh and eighth
CIF Southern Section individual
championships.
Weitzeil will continue her swimming
career at UC Berkeley. But, before she
begins her collegiate career, Weitzeil
is reportedly taking a year off to train
for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio
de Janeiro, Brazil. She has one more
meet this summer.
She is entered in the FINA World
Championships that start this weekend in Russia.
Alysia Montano
Montano won the silver medal in
the 800 meters at the Pan American
Games in Toronto. Melissa Bishop
from Canada won the 800 meters in 1
minute, 59.62 seconds. Montano was
0.14 seconds behind her in 1 minute,
59.76 seconds.
Montano won a gold medal with
Team USA on the 4 x 400 relay team.
Lindvall hit .308 with Team USA
at the Pan American Games. The
United States reached the gold medal
game, but lost to Canada, 4-2, in extra
innings.
It was the only loss of the tournament
for Team USA at the Pan American
Games.
Lee has three top-10 finishes in her
rookie season on the LPGA. She
finished in a tie for eighth place at the
Meijer LPGA Classic on July 23.
Her best finish was at the Kingsmill
Championship on May 14. She was
third.
She finished in fourth place at the Kia
Classic on March 4.
She was tied for 26th place at the US
Women’s Open at Lancaster Country
Club in Pennsylvania.
She has made $367,483 in her rookie
LPGA season.
IndyCar
Gabby Chaves, driving for Bryan Herta Autosport on the Verizon IndyCar
Series, was 12th in the Honda Indy 200
at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.
Chaves started the race in 21st place.
He moved up to fifth late in the race,
but was shuffled back during the last
series of pit stops.
The United States beat Canada, 5-2,
in the semifinals.
“We had a really good strategy, the
car felt pretty strong,” said Chaves,
the rookie driver for the team owned
by Valencia’s Bryan Herta. “I was
trying to charge, I was trying to be aggressive and the second to last restart,
restarting from seventh, I got a good
run on the fifth and sixth place guys. I
had a line on the outside and I just got
squeezed, got left no room there. You
know it’s a bit of dirty driving from
the other drivers, I did put myself in a
tough situation, so I could’ve done it a
little bit different.”
Lindvall hit a three-run triple against
the Dominican Republic in round
robin play. The United States won
that game, 11-0.
It was the best finish for Chaves since
the Firestone 600 at Texas Motor
Speedway on June 6. He was 10th in
that race.
Alison Lee
“I am still happy with the way the
race went,” Chaves said after the race
Janelle Lindvall
Lindvall started in five of the seven
games for Team USA. She went 2-for3 in the gold medal game against Canada. She had a triple, three RBIs and
scored two runs in the Pan American
Games tournament.
By Tim Haddock
at Mid-Ohio.
“We had a strong car out there today,
so I’m very glad with all my crew and
the No. 98 Bowers & Wilkins, Castrol
EDGE car. I’m very proud of them.”
Graham Rahal won the race at MidOhio. It was his second win of the
season.
The next race on the IndyCar Series is
the ABC Supply 500 at Pocono Race
way in Pennsylvania on Aug. 23.
In the Red Bull Global Rallycross
Series, Patrik Sandell won the race in
Detroit and gave Herta his first win as
a team owner in that series.
“This means a lot to our team. I’m
so happy for Patrik, the team, and
Kobalt Tools, and to give Ford a win
in Detroit,” Herta said. “Everyone on
the team has worked so hard this year,
we’ve had our share of bad luck, and
now it’s all come together.”
The next race in the Global Rallycross
Series is in Washington, D.C., on
Aug. 15.

Understanding Your HOA
A
s a resident of Santa Clarita, I,
like most dutiful citizens living in
this orthodox utopia, understand the
importance of being safe, presentable,
and submissive. This valley is chained
together by the camaraderie of likeminded individuals who hold themselves to a higher order. This higher
order, the Homeowners Association, is
founded on the morals and virtues of
community, beige colored walls, and
vanilla colored walls.
to prevent undesirables from ruining
property values, these organizations
are filled with locals passionate about
the fences and lawns of others.
Let’s face it, tract housing without
rules just isn’t tract housing. And
what’s Santa Clarita without tract
housing? The mall?
HOAs are formed to shed light on the
discrepancies of your home not normally noticed by the average person
with a busy schedule. Perhaps your
grass is a quarter of an inch too long.
Or maybe the color of your house
“just won’t do.” Cream, not eggshell
for the window panes. This team of
investigators makes double sure that
your $300 in dues and six-figure mortgages are not ruined by radical home
furnishings.
But, what exactly is an HOA? Originally a pseudo-government designed
We all know that the three C’s (community, conservatism, and conformity)
are indeed essential to a safe, perfect
neighborhood. In Santa Clarita, the
HOA allows residents to feel safe,
knowing that the people next door
aren’t planting exotic trees or leaving
garbage cans out for too long. You
know, things that can really damage
our moral values.
And what about pets? As long as they
are less than 50 pounds, neutered,
short-haired, well-behaved, quiet, registered, licensed, vaccinated, and there
are only two of them, you should be
A-OK!
On one hand, many would consider
this type of militia to be tyrannical.
On the other hand, those people just
don’t understand the importance of

detailed newsletters and fence length.
As long as citizens suppress my right
to private property and NOT the government, all is well.
When being a part of an HOA gets
frustrating, just remember that it all
pays off in the end. Unless you do
something that is against HOA regulations, then a lien can be put on your
house and you will be fined until the
day you die, or become bankrupt –
whichever comes first. So, sit back and
enjoy the heavily chlorinated community pool. You’ve earned it.

Mario Soto Grade 7
Life: Sometimes people try to bag on what’s wrong with you, but it’s because
they can’t handle what is right about you.
Eliza Padula Grade 4
If I were an orphan, like Orphan Annie, I would not like it because I would not
be able to get a good breakfast, lunch or dinner. It would be horrible. I would
have to clean all day and everyone would be mean and sad. I would not be
happy, that’s why I’m thankful for my family, especially my Mom and Dad. I
am happy because I have a house, I do not have to share a room, and I get nice,
clean clothes. I’m very thankful that I can go to college because orphans might
not be able to. I can get a degree and have a wonderful life. That’s why I’m
thankful to not be an orphan.
A man’s most powerful and precious possession is his self-respect, not what he
has or owns or his job.
Inside Out by Jake Padula Grade 6
The movie Inside Out was a good movie for kids of all ages. The movie is sad
in the middle and ends when a character is forgotten. At the end, two characters make it back to their headquarters. I give it 4.5 stars because it was not
clear what the main idea was.
In my opinion, I think it is a good movie, but not one I would maybe see again.
My favorite part of the movie is the end when all the characters are shown going into different heads. I thought that was cool!
When I went to see the movie, I thought it was not going to be good because
it was for little kids. But, it proved me wrong. It was a good movie and a sad
movie, but I did not cry.
Jasmine Laham Grade 5
Antarctica is cold, like the North Pole, but it is in the Southern most part of the
Earth. It is a desert landscape with hard ice and snow. There are orca whales
and penguins, but there are more animals that live in the North such as the
Arctic Fox and Polar Bears. I like the North Pole and cannot wait to see Santa
again.
Lola Padula Grade 2
If I was an orphan, I would be sand and lonely. I would not have a family to
hug and love or care for me. I would have to clean for the caretaker like in the
movie Annie. Nobody would be kind or nice and I would get bumps and lumps
because of my eczema. That’s why I am thankful for having my family.
Gabriella Grade 1
My name is Gabriella. I like C.A.R.E. because it is fun. We swim and the
teachers read books to us. I like to read books and play with my friends.
Crystal Yera Grade 1
I loved learning about the continents. My favorie was South America. We
got to make vegetable fried rice in cooking class. I can’t wait to see what we
are making next week! We will learn about Antarctica. It’s cold there, like ice
cream.
Liam Grade K
I had fun at Camp C.A.R.E. because we went on field trips. I liked going swimming at the Aquatic Center and the Science Center. I learned a lot. Learning
things is fun.
Alana Grade 1
I have had fun at C.A.R.E. because i get to learn about different things like the
states and continents. Lots of different things happen there. I learned about
different songs, foods from around the world and about land. Some places are
boring, but most are not.
Once Upon a Fox 2!
By Kirra Wagoner
Where am I? Is this heaven? Am I alive? I look around and I see my two brothers, Jay and Jake lying on the floor, of course, sleeping. Then I see a sign that
says fox and I realized … I ..I …I’m in an ANIMAL SHELTER!!!! Oh my
gosh, oh my gosh, omg!! Umm wait….Where is mom? I look over to a little
stone engraved with the words “here lies rose, the mother of three little foxes.”
I hear rain and thunder, perfect timing! I lay around all day watching people
passing by. The birds were chirping, the cage was as peaceful as ever, and I
woke up to my brothers’ snoring AGAIN! I turn, but only to find my mother’s
grave. I look up and see three people wearing blue shirts. I hear them say “I’m
naming that one kiwi because she has a green collar.”
I look to the girl pointing to me. her mom gave the manager a ton of money
and then next thing I know I’m in a small cage.
BRIDGE BITES from The American Contract Bridge League
THE SCISSORS COUP
By: Brian Gunnell
This week’s deal features the Scissors Coup, so-called because it cuts communications between the two defenders.

As West, what’s your opening lead? It would be reasonable to lead ♣K, attempting to set up a Club trick while you still have the ♠A entry. That doesn’t work on the
actual deal because of Declarer’s Club singleton. A more promising plan might be
to lead the singleton Heart, later winning the ♠A, then underleading the ♦A to East’s
hoped-for ♦K, and getting a Heart ruff for down one. As you can see, that plan is
the winner. Well, not quite, because there is a clever counter-measure. How can
Declarer deprive West of his ruff?
Enter the Scissors Coup. Declarer wins the Heart lead in Dummy, and before touching trumps she cashes ♣A and leads another Club, pitching a Diamond when East
plays low. By this maneuver Declarer trades a Diamond loser for a Club loser, in the
process thwarting West in his plan to reach East with the ♦K. Now, with the defensive communications snipped, Declarer loses only the ♠A and a Club (but there is no
Diamond loser and no Heart ruff).
Post Script: As West you no doubt found that well-thought-out Heart opening lead.
Then as Declarer you made a clever play to bring home the 5♠ contract. Next,
imagine that you hold the East cards, but with the ♣6 replaced by the ♣J. Now, after
dent that you would alertly hop up with that ♣J, foiling the Scissors Coup. Nice play!
