EIGHTEENTH CENTURY ARKANSAS
by
Winston DeVille
One area that has always thwarted the efforts of researchers of colonial Louisiana families is that of the early Arkansas settlements. Little is known about exactly who lived at
these half-way points between New Orlea,ns and the Illinois posts, a,nd few records are extant
to enlighten the scholar.
Though very short i.n content, t.~e following compilation is, nevertheless, invaluable to
genealogists searching for a,n eighteenth century A rkansan. In the summer of 1967, I visited
various Ca,nadia,n archives under the sponsorship of the American Philosophical Society.
Through the cooperation of Dr. W. V,. Garnier of Bastrop, Louisiana, who is actively building
a significant collection of early Louisiana records at the Morehouse Parish Library, I
secured a copy of the following church records. The correct citation for this item is: Public
Archives of Canada, Mss. Group 8, G14, Vol. 1, pp. 858-871. The document was translated
by Mrs. Hubert Uptigrove and edited by Mrs. Linda M. Smith.
--- Winston De Ville, 1101 st. Paul st., Apt. 801, Baltimore, Maryland, 21202
(EDITOR'S NOTE: The Village of St. Philippe cannot be definitely located, but was probably
not in what is now Arkansas. Margaret Ross of the Arkansas Gazette says .. , ''It was about
five miles from Fort Chartres, on the road to Cahokia, and was about a mile from the Mississippi River. It was in the French District of the Illinois, which doesn't necessarily mean
it was in the present state of Illinois, though I think it probably was.")

THE FIRST FOUR GENERATIONS OF THE CARTER FAMILY
Compiled 11y the late Miriam Carter Douglas, Pasadena, California
Taken from the Handwritten Record of Mrs. Douglas which begins in the Year 1620 and
closes with the Fourth Generation.
Compiled from Mrs. Douglas's Record by:
Willma Humphreys Newton (Mrs. Lawrence Newton)
p. O. Box 41, Hampton, Arkansas 71744
February 18, 1970
COMPILER'S NOTES: I have tried to faithfully and accurately reproduce Mrs. Douglas'
work by use of the typewriter. I have tried to make an exact copy, using her spelling, etc.
The dates shown in the column at the left are as they appear in the Douglas record. Where
I have included a page number in this column, it denotes that the information aRPears on that
page in the Douglas record. Mrs. Douglas did not number all of her pages, and I supplied a
number.
There were evidently two books of the descendents, one for the living and one for the
dead, when Mrs. Douglas concluded her work in 1908. The names herein are those of the
dead in 1908.
Mrs. Douglas descended from John and Ann Whipple Carter, the oldest son of Nathaniel
Carter and Ann McPherson. I descend from William Carter and (Mary Jane Elliott?) through
their son, William E. Carter, who married Martha Chipman.
Through Martha Chipman
Carter I descend from John Tilley and John Howland, who came to America on the Mayflower.
Jane Chipman Carter, daughter of Willi.am E. and Martha Chipman Carter, married William
Blanton Humphreys. They were my grandparents. Their son, William Fletcher Humphreys,
who married Nellie Pledwell Himler, was my father.
Mrs. Douglas continued her record in the Fifth generation with the descendents of John
and Ann Whipple Carter.

I am making a record of all the Carters (of the family to which I belong)
Post Offices that I have at this time who are not liveing in order that I may
have the record of all both liveing and those not living. Those of who are
liveing are in another book but this book is to be used for those not liveing
at this time. There are a few names in the book of the liveing who have died
since 8th month 1907 who will be in this because since that time they have died.

THE FOURTH GENERATION
4 Mo. 19, 1734
John Carter. The first one of the fourth generation; his father (Nathaniel
Carter of Dublin, Ireland) came to Chester Co., Pa. about 1731 or 1732,
a single man 24 or 25 years old. Philadelphia was his P. O. from that
time until he removed to Orange County, North Carolina in 1766. There
his Post Office was in that part of the state but it was new country. I do
not know the name of the P. O.
12 Mo. 15, 1732
In 1733 1 mo. 15th, John Carter's father was married in the old Sweedish
Church, Wilmington Delaware (Holy Trinity) with Ann McPherson the only
daughter of Caniel and Ruth Shires McPherson who lived near Kennett
Friends Meeting in Chester Co. Pa. and Nathaniel Carter and wife settled
near that Friends Meeting and t!lere .John Carter their first child was born
and that near Philadelphia his P. O. must have been in that city until he
removed in 1763 to Orange Co. North Carolina. There I do not know his
P. O. Both Nathaniel Carter and his wife Ann McPherson Carter and their
son John Carter and wife Ann Whipple Carter remained in N. C. the remainder of their lives. Nathaniel died in 5th Mo. 1795 and his wife in

Nathaniel and Ann McPherson brought up a family of children and they
are all that I know of anywhere either in America or Europe who constitute the fourth generation of My Carter family.
Nathaniel Carter had but one brother who lived to mature age and his
name was Nicholas Carter whose home was in Dublin Ireland and who
bore the same name as his father and also of his grandfather. There
were three Nicholas Carters, 1 in the first generation, 1 in the second
generation and this one in the third generation in Ireland. This brother
Nicholas in the third generation was born 10 mo. 7, 1702, married by a
priest in 1725, had no children to come to maturity. Consequently he
wished his brother Nathaniel Carter of Chester Co. Pa. to l'eturn to Dublin Ireland and take his (State legal place - NOTE: this term almost illegible - may be something similar) as his heir. Nicholas came to America to see his brother and try to induce him to return but Nathaniel who
was thE> ~oungest of his parents children would not go.
and never did
return to Ireland.
In the third generation besides Nicholas Carter and Nathaniel sons of
Nicholas and Margarett Benningham Carter (of the 2nd generation) there
was one son John who was born in 1701 and died in his parents home died
1715. There were in this third gE>neration three daughters Anne born in
1698 or 99 married by a priest Mar. 1716 in Dublin, Ireland

Page 8
Rebecca married Thomas Rutter from Cheshire England and
Elizabeth Carter married by a Priest in Dublin, Ireland.
The above account ends until this time a clear deffinite knowledge of these
sisters of Nathaniel Carter as he came to America about 1732 or 33 maybe
as early as 1731 and now in 1908 nearly 200 years in the past gives no
written facts as to their posterity.
1907 & 8
I am now corresponding with some of the Rutter family in England to find
if I can whether they are descendants of Rebecca and'l'homas Rutter of
Cheshire or not.

GARLAND COUNTY FAMILIES -
1880 CENSUS
The Garland County Historical Society publishes a year book and features a political
township each year. This year we are doing two of, the smaller ones in the eastern portion
of the county -- Sulphur and Phillips that includes the Lake Catherine and Lonsdale area.
I would like anyone who had ancestors living there on the 1880 census to contact us. We try
to learn ancestry and list descendants of each family and have pictures when possible. We
already have quite a bit about some of them, but others are blank. Address all queries and
response to: Mrs. Frank Cline, 914 Summer st. , Hot springs, Ark. 71901

NEAL OR VAUGHN CEMETERY, HCWARD COUNTY, ARKANSAS
Go ten miles west of Nashville on Highway 24, turn left and go south
to the first road to the right. This -land leads to the Bearden place.
The cemetery is across their south pasture on the hill in the woods to
the east. Compiler's uncle helped make a mineral survey of this coun-ty
in 1936 and to his recollection this cemetery had 30 to 40 stones. The
area has had a forest fire since this time, so it is assumed that many
of the stones are buried beneath the fallen logs and many pine needles.

TOLLETT FAMILY CEMETERY, HOWARD COUNTY, ARKANSAS
This ,cemetery is located on the J~ff Tollett place On Highway 28 E,
about 5 m~les from Nashville, Ark.
It is in terrible condition and the
reading of these few markers was made possible by Miss Jamie McConnell,
Mr$. Juel Tollett and Mrs. Francis Reed.
A tree has fallen across the
cemetery and knocked the stones down. Too, the grass, thorn bushes, etc.
have been allowed to grow. These are the few markers that were found.

HESTER CEMETERY, HOWARD COUNTY, ARKANSAS
This is supposedly one of the oldest cemeteries in our county. It
is located between Center Point and Dierks on Highway 4. It is not far
from the site of the New Salem Church and School, which is long past.
Although about 100 yards from the highw~y, it is completely lost in the
Dierks Forest. It is directly east of the Jerry Jacob's place. It was
a large cemetery but the Jacobs family keep their Stone lot and the rest
are lost to oblivion.

OLD SARD IS CEMETERY, HOW'ARD COUNTY, ARKANSAS
Located one and a half miles north of Wakefield Methodist Church,
this cemetery is much neglected, but I am told that at one time there
was one of the largest Baptist Churches for those days near by. There
were three stones
that , I could not reach because of weeds, briars and
. . .
big holes.
If there were graves betwen the present standing stones,
then it was a very large cemetery.

During Thanksgiving, 1968, Mrs. Kristin Dildy Plummer and I made a quick survey of

They are not complete ... only names of our interest and perhaps some of the older ones.

(Family tradition says that Carter Markham was hung during the Civil War by Yankee
soldiers and left for dead. Then later he was hung again by the bushwackers. Neither
hanpng 'took', but left deep scars on his neck. Later he supposedly married four
more times . " so indeed he fought a good fight. I can't find one thread of evidence
to back this up. This was my great grandfather, a Baptist preacher. -- Jo Dildy.)

I am trying to trace the ancestry of William Preston Hickman, b. Jan. 18, 1804 in N. C.,
who bought property in the Parish of Natchitoches, La. on Dec. 30, 1830. The deed says he
was "of the Terr. of Ark." and another record says "of Hempstead. Co. i Ark." Family custom says his father was William, and his mother we know was Mary Webster Hickman. His
widowed mother came to La. with him and his two brothers, Peter Terry Hickman and Thomas Jefferson Hickman, soon after 1830, so his father must have died sometime betweenthen
and 1812, when the last son was born in Tenn. It is believed the family came across Tenn.
from N. C. during the beginning of the 1800's. In the 1830 census, I find a Wm. Hickman In
