Duration: 1 hour and 30 minutes Max Number Participants: 17 Like reality, the game of Monopoly reflects the inherent logic underpinning neo-liberal urban processes, in which the city mirrors economic, political and social relations. This version of Monopoly is intended to offer a unique exercise - an opportunity to question the kind of city that we want to build. Using the city of Porto as the board, this version subverts some of the game’s traditional rules, involving players in a process of participatory urbanism. CONTEMPORARY DANCE THE BALL COREOGRAPHY BY ALDARA BIZARRO AND MUSIC BY ARTUR FERNANDES Partners: Câmara Municipal do Porto, Porto Lazer, Projecto Manobras no Porto; Rancho do Douro Litoral, Associação Recreativa e Desportiva São Pedro de Miragaia, Grupo Os projectos apresentados no Centro Histórico do Porto têm o apoio de Musical de Miragaia, Centro Social da Paróquia de MiragaiaATL e Centro de Dia, Junta de Freguesia de Miragaia, Curso de Música Silva Monteiro e Conservatório de Música do Porto, Academia de Música de Costa Cabral, Imaginarius – Festival Internacional de Teatro de Rua de Santa Maria da Feira, Associação Orquestra e Banda Sinfónica de Jovens de Santa Maria da Feira Co-Produção: Municípios da Cultrede – Pombal, Gouveia, Seia, Ponte de Lima e Paredes de Coura – da Cultideias e Jangada de Pedra PORTO’S HISTORIC CENTRE, LARGO DE MIRAGAIA, RUA DE MIRAGAIA 1 JUNE, 19H00 Repeats on 2 June, 19h00 and 3 June at 18h30, in Serralves. Duration: 1 hour and 30 minutes The Ball is a dance performance inspired by Ettore Scola’s film “The Ball” (Le bal, 1983), in memory of the public balls organised in urban neighbourhoods, villages and towns of Portugal. On the basis of research into traditional public balls, dances and their various forms, an attempt has been made to recreate a contemporary ball, which is modern and pertinent, as a unique place for social gathering and partying, idealised by the participants and the artistic team. The first part of this project involves people from various ages from the Parish of Miragaia, a riverside district in Porto, who together with the dancers, actors and choreographer, will collaborate in performing the work. In this manner each person is an active element and will contribute with their experience and memories with their body and voice in a joint creation and festive atmosphere, in which the general public is also invited to take part. As part of this participation process the performance also includes a band formed by people from Porto’s various schools and associations who together with the musicians will collaborate in this festive ritual. Co-financiadores EXPERIMENTAL MUSIC NON-MUSICIANS ENSEMBLE Nuno Rebelo Partners: Câmara Municipal do Porto, Porto Lazer, Projecto Manobras no Porto, Balleteatro, Teatro de Marionetas do Porto ITINERARY THROUGH PORTO’S HISTORIC CENTRE, STARTING IN THE CASAMUSEU GUERRA JUNQUEIRO NEXT TO SÉ CATHEDRAL 2 JUNE, 11H00 Repeats on 3 June at 18h30 in Serralves. Duration: 1 hour Nuno Rebelo is an inventive and versatile musician. His work and ongoing research with the electric guitar has led to the development of a personal style of experimental guitar-playing. He’s considered to be one of the most innovative guitarists in Portugal and has also achieved well-deserved international recognition. He composed the anthem for Expo 98, the music and sound design for the performance “Oceans and Utopias”, in the Utopia pavilion of Expo 98, and also the music for the fireworks spectacle that opened “Porto 2001 European Capital of Culture”. In the project, Non-Musicians Ensemble the main challenge is to create a musical work in 1 week, that may be performed by someone who doesn’t know how to play any instruments, but nonetheless aims to ensure that the performance presented will be interesting from the beginning to end. Without writing a single melody or defining a single note, the project uses the organization of sound events and their musical and scenic results. Above all, it will be based upon the availability, generosity and commitment of all those who take part in this adventure. EXPERIMENTAL MUSIC OH BRASS ON THE GRASS ALAS Alvin Curran Partners: Câmara Municipal do Porto, Porto Lazer, Projecto Manobras no Porto; Banda Sinfónica Portuguesa; Academia de Música de Costa Cabral, Conservatório de Música do Porto, Escola de Música Óscar da Silva, Academia de Música de Paços de Brandão, HardClub, Escola de Música de Leça da Palmeira, Academia de Música de Vilar do Paraíso, Associação de Cultura Musical de Lousada / Conservatório do Vale do Sousa PORTO’S HISTORIC CENTRE, TERREIRO DA SÉ 2 JUNE, 16H00 Repeats on 3 June at 16h00 in Serralves. Oh Brass on the Grass Alas, by North American composer, Alvin Curran, is a large-scale project involving 200 musicians, that is performed outdoors. Adaptation of this work to Serralves Meadow and the Terreiro da Sé in Porto includes the involvement of various music academies and schools and their students, together with the invaluable collaboration of the Portuguese Symphony Band and a partnership with the Manobras no Porto Project. Alvin Curran has commented in relation to Oh Brass on the Grass Alas that: “I got the idea to write a piece for 350 amateur brass band musicians in Germany, at Donaueschingen, when I was sitting in the Kaestner Schule at a concert of a very interesting Indonesian group of improvisers.... For a moment my mind wandered, and as I looked out the great glass window I began to imagine hundreds of musicians performing on the sloping grass and fields just behind the school and in full view of the audience seated inside. “Oh Brass on the Grass Alas” was born. Nonetheless, “Oh Brass uma iniciativa on the Grass Alas” was the most difficult work I have ever undertaken, because of the sheer numbers of musicians involved; the logistical, musical and choreographic organization; the acoustic risks of playing outdoors; the not indifferent job of winning the confidence of a mass of skeptical new music-shy performers on whom everything depended. aeroporto do Porto PUPPET THEATRE MONO, THE AMBULANT MONKEY Electric Circus Partner: FIMP 1 JUNE AT 10H00, 12H00 AND 15H00 Repeats at Serralves on 2 June at 13h15, 15h30 and 17h30 and on 3 June at the same schedules Duration: 30 minutes Mono, a little stubborn circus monkey, is the latest creation of Electric Circus. Mono can ride his bike, play the organ, he screeches and squeaks, makes everybody laugh and gives some people a fright and some even burst out in tears… Electric Circus is a collaboration between inventor Fred Abels and puppeteer Mirjam Langemeijer. This duo explores modern robotic techniques, seeking new paths, in an interesting fusion between mechanical engineering, electronics and puppeteering. The robots look truly lifelike and are moved by remote control: a technique borrowed from the film-industry known as "animatronics". Mono immediately responds to the audience’s reactions, but where is the performer-operator? promotores Performance BLUE TIRED HEROES Massimo Furlan 1 June at 14h00, 15h30 and 17h00 and 3 June at 10h30 Repeats at Serralves on 2 June at 13h00, 16h00 and 18h00 Duration: 40 minutes There’s an airport. A circumscribed place. An enclosed space. People leaving on a trip, with suitcases. Passports. A Venuee, whose rules can’t be breached. A micro-society living in vast corridors, constituted by agents, air hostesses, passengers. The supervisors keep watch. And there’s another space, a park. A demarcated area where people can stroll around. They feel fine, wander and argue, as children play. This is a place of rest, a place where we go to meet others, a place where we’ll see others. And suddenly we see a Superman. We see him in different places. Indeed, there are lots of Supermen. They’re everywhere. Incarnations of our childhood dreams: at night, dressed in pyjamas, a scarf around our necks, we were once all Supermen. Today we’ve grown up. Small, large, skinny, fat – ordinary people. Fragmented images that express a sense of incongruity, revelation and fall of a myth. Blue Tired Heroes by the Swiss stage director, Massimo Furlan, is a play about the geography of place, mobility and fragmentation of action, and the long term - a series of images within a narrative, made up of gaps, voids and enigmas. colaboração 4EM FESTA CONTINUOUS ACTIVITIES SERRALVES MUSIC VEXATIONS Partner: Casa da Música 2 June, from 08h00 to 24h00 and 3 June from 08h00 to 16h00 and from 20h00 to 24h00 Venue: B2 Biblioteca de Serralves Free admission subject to available space Vexations is Satie. There is no other way to define a work that is as eccentric and enigmatic as its author. Vexations reflects the inherent originality of the French composer and pianist, Erik Satie (1866-1925). The score is a confusing manuscript, based on an unusual combination of harmonies, which are familiar when considered in isolation. Satie’s work would be a miniature musical exercise, of only relative interest, if it hadn’t been for the note he left in manuscript: "To play this motif 840 times in succession, it would be advisable to prepare oneself beforehand, in the deepest silence, by serious immobilities." It is impossible to discern whether this was a serious indication or a provocation, typical of the composer. Vexations is a challenging and timeless composition, which was only disseminated many years later. Its first full performance occurred in 1963, in New York, in an exhausting 18-hour marathon organized by John Cage. Since then it has been performed throughout the world, revealing a phenomenon that makes it even more intriguing: despite its apparent simplicity and successive repetition, it’s extremely difficult to remember - the performer can’t discard the score and the listener only retains a vague idea of what he’s been listening to. Vexations is brought to Serralves em Festa by the Casa da Música, in a new format: a concert/installation using the Disklavier, which will be scheduled to play the same motif 840 times, on an uninterrupted basis, but nonetheless with subtle variations throughout the performance. Conception: Filipe Lopes ViDEO / RADIO/tHEATRE SOUNDS AND IMAGES FOR CHAMELEONS Partner: Teatro Nacional São João 2 June, from 10h00 to 24h00 3 June, from 10h00 to 22h00 Venue: F2 Capela e Sacristia da Casa de Serralves Free admission subject to available space Sounds and images for chameleons is based on the projection of videos of theatrical works produced in recent years by the São João National Theatre, directed by various filmmakers, in which exercises of transposition range from discreet adaptation to more transgressive “rewriting”. Forms of recording the ephemeral theatrical event for posterity, and also to create new stages for the scenes. Alongside the video projection, the audience will listen to radio theatre objects, created from radio plays and also from texts whose characteristics are not necessarily dramatic. In this collection, entitled “The Sounds, Girl!…”, actors included within the cast of some of São João National Theatre’s most memorable performances give unexpected force to the sounds of playwrights and poets… THEATRE THE WORLD’S SMALLEST THEATRE Graeme Pulleyn 2 and 3 June, 20 presentations a day, every 15 minutes, from 10h30 to 12h45 and from 15h00 to 17h15 Venue: A3 Clareira das Azinheiras Duration: 10 minutes Max Number People: 15 The World’s Smallest Theatre present stories from various different authors and origins. IMPRESSIONS OF RAYMOND ROUSSEL IMPRESSIONS OF África II, 2002, cristina iglEsias EXHIBITIONS LOCUS SOLUS. IMPRESSIONS OF RAYMOND ROUSSEL 2 and 3 June, 40 hours non-stop Venue: B3 Museu Serralves Museum, in partnership with the Reina Sofia Museum (Madrid), is staging the first major exhibition about the French poet, playwright and novelist, Raymond Roussel (Paris, 1877 – Palermo, 1933). “Locus Solus. Impressions of Raymond Roussel”, emphasises the tremendous influence that Roussel exercised on contemporary arytists, not only in the field of literature, but in the visual arts. the exhibition features approximately three hundred pieces – including paintings, photographs, sculptures, readymades, installations and videos, aside from books, documents, magazines and original manuscripts – that recreate Roussel’s universe and allow for a reflection on his prodigious legacy, which inspired some of the avant-garde movements, notably surrealism. Some of the well-known artists with works in the exhibition include Marcel Duchamp, Francis Picabia, Max Ernst, Salvador Dalí, Jean Tinguely, Joseph Cornell, Rodney Graham, Marcel Broodthaers, Man Ray, Roberto Matta, Guy de Cointet, Ree Morton, Terry Fox, Cristina Iglesias and Francisco Tropa. ...NAVIGATIONS/ DIVAGATIONS... BETWEEN REEFS AND SHALLOWS... Artur Barrio 2 and 3 June, 40 hours non-stop Venue: B3 Museu Artur Barrio (Porto, 1945) returns to the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art with the exhibition … navigations/divagations … between reefs and shallows…, which will ‘inhabit’ the central room of the Serralves Museum. The exhibition will reinvent the room with a new specific project, and transform it over several weeks, before and after the opening. The oeuvre of Artur Barrio is surprising in the way in which the artist constructs ephemeral situations where the experience of art and life subverts the place for the presentation of the artwork as well as the condition of the viewer. The viewer is forced to abandon his passivity and discover and interpret each of the artist's projects as a physical and conceptual experience that will expand his awareness and knowledge of the world. In many of Barrio's projects, perishable organic materials, such as bread, fish, meat, wine, water and coffee, are combined with text, drawings and photographs in order to propose new experiments of the sensible and knowable world. The place, time and discourses of art are often the subject of criticism in the artist's work, when detached from human experience of the world, which uniquely combines a simplicity of elements and complexity of ideas. TO WHOM WHO KEEPS A RECORD Mathieu Kleyebe Abonnenc 2 and 3 June, 40 hours non-stop Venue: B3 Museu This is the first exhibition in Portugal of French artist Mathieu Kleyebe Abonnenc. He has a particular interest in the liberation movements of the former Portuguese colonies, namely Cape Verde and GuineaBissau, as well as in the analysis of image production, including illustration for education manuals, photographic reportage and propaganda films that translated ideas of revolution and militancy in the 1960s and 1970s. In this exhibition, Abonnenc shows a series of original works in Serralves, particularly a medium length feature, shot in Porto and starring Bia Gomes, the lead actress in most films shot by the famous Guinean filmmaker, Flora Gomes), that was conceived specifically for the Museum rooms. Produced during his three month stay in Porto, the projects are based upon his research in several Portuguese archives and museums (including CIDAC - Amílcar Cabral Information and Documentation Centre, the Mário Soares Foundation, and the National Ethnology Museum), which allowed him, for instance, to rethink the scope of Amílcar Cabral’s contribution towards a free Africa, or return to the work of Sarah Maldoror, a filmmaker who is a symbol of militant cinema and the cinema-verité movements. GROWTH AND CULTURE Ricardo Valentim 2 and 3 June, 40 hours non-stop Venue: B3 Museu Ricardo Valentim is a Portuguese artist who has been living in New York for the last eight years. This exhibition will constitute the first opportunity for the Portuguese public to confront the full extent of the graphic material — posters, catalogues, leaflets — produced by the artist in recent years, and which Valentim considers as a fundamental part of several pieces featured in international shows (from Manifesta 7, in 2007-08, to the Medellín International Festival, in Colombia, in 2010). ‘Growth and Culture’ also features two original projects, conceived for the Museum rooms and for the Auditorium: an installation titled Content of the Lecture “Models of Democracy”, in which the artist resorts to obsolete projectors to confront us with a very unique ‘classroom’, and a twopart film Inkblot Perception and Personality, which is based on a psychological test invented in the early 1960s in the USA and whose highly questioned efficiency soon proved completely out of proportion in relation to the efforts, time and money put into its creation. The Holtzman Inkblot Technique, was patented by Wayne H. Holtzman in 1961, after 7 years of expensive research and was disclosed at a time when the scientific community was no longer interested in personality tests. WALLS TO THE PEOPLE João Paulo Feliciano 2 and 3 June, 40 hours non-stop Venue: F2 exterior da Casa de Serralves The installation Walls to the People, whose canvas is the walls of Serralves Villa, is constituted by the typical inscriptions and graffiti that we normally find inscribed on the walls of public spaces. The virtual inscriptions can’t be seen at first. We invite members of the general public to explore and discover each of the inscriptions, by walking inside and outside the Villa and pointing their augmented reality smartphones or tablets at the walls. MY BEDROOM HAS NO WALLS 2 and 3 June, from 10h00 to 22h00 Venue: B3 Museu, Sala do Serviço Educativo The project for schools during the 2011-2012 academic year, is entitled “Bedroom, Place of refuge, identity and evasion”. The project suggests drawing closer to the individual’s universe, via the most intimate space within the house: the bedroom. This approximation obliges movement of the body, an attentive gaze, with time, of each of the scale models presented. Visitors will have to move around and make an effort to observe the intimate details of the other person: of the neighbour above and below, or of the building next door. OTHER ACTIVITIES SUPER BOCK CREATIVE EXPERIENCE 2 June, from 12h00 to 01h00 and 3 June, from 12h00 to 24h00 Venue: F9 Quinta The Super Bock Creative Experience will produce a collective work. Each participant will receive a coloured stick that they will attach to others and so on successively. These sticks, identical to those used in a Mikado game, the symbol of the Super Bock / Serralves National Creative Industries Prize, will be added by participants to an organic progressive structure with an unpredictable shape. The evolution of the work, which will extend throughout the Serralves em Festa event, will be articulated with the arched pavilion that will be previously installed in the same space, built from crates of beer and connecting elements. This modular assembled building may be crossed by people and sticks, according to the collective will. The result will combine a high-tech appearance with a lowcost aesthetic. In parallel, in the space next to the pavilion, people will be challenged to play a large-scale Mikado game. 6EM FESTA SATURDAY SERRALVES program 2 june © Geraldine Aresteanu © Carlos Laredo THEATRE BIBEU & HUMPHREY THEATRE Desayuno Fragil 08h00 GUIDED VISIT OUT-OF-HOURS VISIT Orientation: João Almeida and Ana Luísa Oliveira Ponto de partida: B1 Entrada Duration: 2 hours The out-of-hours visit to Serralves Park, which is organised outside the times when the Park is normally open to the general public, makes it possible for visitors to gain an experience of the landscape in Serralves which until now has been reserved to the Foundation’s employees, and appreciate it in the early hours of the morning. 10h00 Performance mONOPOLY? The investigation and construction of new musical instruments has accompanied the evolution of musical creation from the very outset. Alongside the first electric devices, the first musical instruments using electricity as a sound source also emerged, such as the Musical Telegraph (1874), Theremin, (1917), Martenot Waves (1928) and Hammond organ (1935), amongst many others. Technological advancements in the second half of the 20th century led to an exponential increase in the variety and quantity of resources and techniques for musical creation, in particular with the development of computers and synthesisers. The 1990s indelibly marked the entrance to the new millennium with concepts such as Web 2.0, open-software and open-hardware, which rendered these resources available to an even broader community of artists and interested amateurs. The Electronic Music and Musical Production course of the Castelo Branco Higher School of Applied Arts has carefully monitored these developments and trends, including several of these topics in approaches for a diversified development of tools and knowledge, in order to foster technology-based musical creation. In order to provide an effective response to fast technological development, ESART’s Electronic Music Ensemble was set up in 2007, which primarily focuses on artistic exploration of instruments which have been designed and built by students allying knowledge of acoustics and organology to musical programming for the creation of new timbres and possibilities of musical expression. but sometimes by introducing new material. In this manner, standard common reactions may be weakened and structured polyphonies may arise. For this project, the participating musicians (including resident musicians in Berlin with musicians from Porto and Coimbra) will organise a two-day workshop, in which participants will be introduced to the sign system of Adapt/Oppose and the selected parts will be combined via various forms which will finally result in two versions for nine musicians. Participating musicians: Ana Luisa Veloso (electric guitar), Antoine Chessex (saxophone), Diana Combo (turntable), João Martins (saxophone), Jorge Queijo (percussion), Liz Allbee (trumpet), Marcelo dos Kings (acoustic guitar), Mario Costa (percussion), Werner Dafeldecker (double bass). 14h50 Partner: FIMP Itinerary in the Park Repeats at 17h30 and on 3 June at 13h15, 15h30 and 17h30 Duration: 30 minutes POP ROCK MUSIC PAD SHOWCASE Old Jerusalem / a La La Ressonance / The Astroboy / Dear Telephone / peixe : avião Partner: PAD Records Venue: D3 Ténis Duration: 1 hour and 40 minutes PAD will attend Serralves em Festa 2012 for a special showcase, featuring a selection of artists from its catalogue. The dancers movements are structured around fragile and temporary constructions, sustained by the interweaving of gestures and intervals that move through space thus creating volatile configurations. The dancers often suddenly move across the space, as the bodies disperse, attract, become disorganised and are diluted within the landscape and in the contact between the parts of the whole. The work presupposes intense sensorial activity, highlighting the use of touch and creating movement textures, guided by games of proximity, distance and friction between the bodies. The performing duo, constituted by Rafael Lamata and Jaime Vallaure, works on the basis of more direct reality, including familiar situations, focusing on topics that form part of our everyday lives via a contemporary and ironical language. Their performances frequently involve questioning the audience and using a minimum amount of objects and resources in order to achieve maximum expressiveness and intensity. A play on the experience of 35 minutes. Thirty-five minutes are 2100 seconds. The dimension of time is not a material, nor an action - material and action "exist" thanks to the time variable. These 35 minutes are fundamental to the construction of the story. We cannot eliminate them, because otherwise the roof would fall through. In the thousands of millions of years of our Universe, these 35 minutes fulfil their own purpose, coming immediately after the last 35 minutes and slotting in nicely just before the next 35 minutes. Hugo Antunes is a young Portuguese double bass player who is normally associated to the world of jazz. However in "Roll Call", we can listen to his exploratory work in the field of improvised music and real-time composition. In MALUS he plays alongside two leading international musicians: Chris Corsano and Nate Wooley. Corsano is one of the most extraordinary drummers of the new generation associated to musical improvisation and experimentation. His tremendous expressive palette, developed using drumming techniques involving various objects, transforms this instrument into a source of melodic and rhythmic textures. The major aesthetic amplitude of his work is reflected in his involvement with a wide array of different musical situations, including participation in a group led by the “intelligent pop” singer , Bjork. In 2011 he performed in Serralves alongside Zeena Parkins and Dave Allen, in what was considered to be one of the main concerts of the year by the magazine, Jazz.pt. Nate Wooley (together with Peter Evans, Greg Kelley, Franz Hautzinger and Axel Dörner) is one of the leading contemporary trumpet-players – one of the small circle of musicians who are consolidating the emerging canon of new experimental trumpet-based music in the early 21st century. We have already become used to his experimentation with a wide spectrum of different approaches ranging from his constantly creative revisiting of jazz traditions to freer forms of improvisation. From avant-garde to “noise”, in a free approximation to composition, the recently formed trio, MALUS explores the possibilities of “sound as an invisible form of emotion”. Repetitive structures or patterns of daily life are often a starting point of his work. The representation of emotions in music is another topic. The Video “Etüde in bürgerlichen Gefühlen” 2009 and the opera “Barnes Dance” for 7 singers, 4 drummers and a joker 2010 are outstanding works. He regularly curates the Grand Prix d’Amour in Berlin. Dafeldecker was born in Vienna and has dedicated his career to European modern music and improvisation, in particular to the examination of graphical notations, fluxus, minimal music, electro-acoustic music, jazz and field recordings. His musical projects are often inspired and shaped by outside influences such as architecture, physics, photography and film. A trombone player and exceptional pianist, Brookmeyer forged legendary partnerships with Jimmy Giuffre, Clark Terry, Jim Hall and Gerry Mulligan. His fame is nonetheless based primarily on his work as a composer and musical arranger. From Claude Thornhill’s orchestra on the West coast, passing through Mulligan’s Concert Jazz Band and the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Big Band in New York until his New Art Orchestra, Brookmeyer played a key role in reviving interest in this type of a musical formation. His compositions are profoundly rooted in the big band tradition, but simultaneously demonstrate great freshness and originality. He had a vast range of interests and his writing reveals a wide array of different influences, such as Duke Ellington or Witold Lutoslawski. Brookmeyer was a mentor for a countless number of contemporary Jazz composers including Maria Schneider or John Hollenbeck. The repertoire chosen by the Jazz Orchestra of the Espinho Professional Music School as a tribute to Bob Brookmeyer, will make an incursion into the composer’s most prolific period and his seminal albums: New Works Celebration and Waltzing with Zoe. His solo works feature dense layers of sustained pitches reacting with the architecture of the space or massive clouds of amplified sax resulting in intense live actions in total immersion in the sound. Through the deep velvety voice of Mr. de Brito and alternation between the delicate or majestic harp of Mr. Raon, the 'song' format is rewritten, subverting some of the most characteristic places of the form, themes and situation of a concert. The obvious becomes interesting, sarcasm becomes sincere, naivety becomes postmodern, taciturn becomes festive and the ephemeral becomes classic. In live performances, O Espectáculo d'Ontem plays songs such as “A Última Canção”, “Lovesongs’ Words Are Unique” “Papel de Rebuçado”, which result from a challenge posed to Pedro da Silva Martins (Deolinda), amongst others. The members of O Espectáculo d'Ontem are Mr. Eduardo Raon (Bypass, POWERTRIO, Hipnótica, Ela Não É Francesa Ele Não É Espanhol, Ou, Rive Gauche) and Mr. Joaquim de Brito (Bypass, Melting Pot, SW). In this improvisation-based concert, Allbee will be joined by several Portuguese musicians. Hugo Antunes, a Portuguese bassist based in Belgium who has made his mark on the European jazz and improvised music scene. This play proposes the possibility of reducing distances between imaginary, fantastic and concrete universes. The insignificance of the human being in relation to the cosmos is a source of cultural production. Cosmic distance has a similar value to mental distance. Our relative distance to the planets is as significant as the difference between the reality and fiction that we build. The contemporary world produces a great deal of rhetoric in relation to the problems created by itself. We almost always find hope in the heavens. 21h30 CONTEMPORARY DANCE ACCORDS Thomas Hauert and Companhia ZOO Venue: B2 Auditório Repeats on 3 June at 21h30 Duration: 1 hour and 20 minutes Max Capacity: 250 people Swiss-German choreographer, Thomas Hauert has run his ZOO Company, based in Brussels, since 1997. Hauert arrived to the world of music through dance. He writes the musical scores for his performances on the basis of the movement that he practices, analyses and improvises. In this new work, Accords, his most in-depth work with his group of dancers, Thomas Hauert has continued his research into body and movement, focusing more specifically on the relationship between dance and music, and continued developing choreographic principles based on polyrhythmic music. Another principle developed in Accords is that of “improvised unisons”. Introduced for the first time in a scene from puzzled (2007), Hauert creates listening-based movement “between” the dancers, as opposed to movement decided on in advance by a single individual.. Although realised in unison, which might make people assume that it has been written, the movement in it is improvised within predefined rules. The status of “leader” constantly shifts from one dancer to the next. The movements, initiatives, impulses of each one are instantly picked up and transformed by the others. This process asks the dancers to be permanently listening and giving their complete concentration, and at any given moment to be responsible as well for leading the group. No one controls the movement, but at the same time everyone is involved in creating it. If the work on polyrhythmic movement juxtaposes several melodies from the same arrangement within a group or body, improvised unisons reveal a continuous line of movement. However, with the initiative shifting constantly between the dancers, who each hear something distinctive and gain different direction from it, over time this line can end up reflecting the different motifs in the music. The dancers are also free to break away from the group temporarily. Accords involves a “democratic” process, based on individual freedom and permanent attention being paid to others: a process aimed at obtaining a choreographic complexity beyond that of a written piece. Thomas Hauert chooses to rely on the intuitive intelligence of the body and his group of dancers. 22h00 CONTEMPORARY CIRCUS FOTÉ FORÉ MANDINGUE COMPANY, CRIATED BY LUC RICHARD AND RICHARD DJOUDI Venue: A3 Clareira das Azinheiras Repeats on 3 June at 22h00 Durationo: 1 hour Max Capacity: 1000 people “Enchantment, respect, happiness. We rejuvenate, we become more confident, concentrated, rigorous, disciplined, which makes us feel that our lives make sense, that there is a path, makes us stronger, gives us the pleasure to share our work with the general public, fills us with joy and emotion. When we’re on stage we forget our problems. We become other people. We have to confront our families in order to impose our passion for the circus. We are in a wonderful world and live a dream”. (Artists of the Mandingue Company) Mandingue is a circus company from Conakry, in Guinea, with a dozen acrobats and dancers. The company evolved from childhood exercises performed by the young artists in Conakry’s beaches and is based on their strength, joy and talent. In 2009, in the 2ème Festival Culturel Panafricain d'Alger, they met with Luc Richard, the Festival’s circus specialist who together with Richard Djoudi decided to development a project with the young Guinean circus artists - providing them with a structure and professional opportunities in accordance with their talent. The company’s first performance, Foté Foré, by Luc Richard and with stage direction by Luc Richard and Christian Lucas, resulted from an artistic residency in the Scène Nationale de Marne la Vallée – La Ferme du Buisson, in November 2010. This new work, filled with humour, vitality and poetry, is based on the life experience of each of the company’s artists, in which generosity and mutual assistance have constituted essential conditions for survival in a continent that has been pillaged and agitated by centuries of colonialism. The Mandingue Company has been recognized within the professional world of circus, and was invited for the opening ceremony of the 32nd edition do Festival Mondial du Cirque de Demain, in January 2011, where Foté Foré was included within the festival’s official selection and received three special jury prizes. 10EM FESTA saturday > sunday SERRALVES program 2 and 3 june music batida 23h00 POP ROCK MUSIC FILHO DA MÃE Partner: Bodyspace Venue: F2 Casa de Serralves Duration: 1 hour Free admission subject to available space With the launch of his debut album - the pathbreaking “Palácio” - Rui Carvalho built a reputation as one of the most promising names of Portuguese contemporary music. After playing in bands such as If Lucy Fell, I Had Plans and Asneira, where he gained musical inspiration from hardcore, and its close relations, Rui Carvalho has crystallised his acoustic guitar skills in an album which achieves an amazing degree of transparency and beauty, through its frankness and contrast between technique and emotion. In concert, Rui Carvalho transforms into a multiplication of hands, fingers and sensations. Seen from the other side, this duel between the man and guitar is truly disturbing. Every day, new compilations appear - directly from Musseke to the hands of the Kandongueiros (taxi drivers). Most of these compositions are dedicated to Kuduro and contribute, far more than local radio, to the sounds that that echo through the streets. Batida is also the name of a project created by the Angolan-Portuguese DJ, Mpula, aka Pedro Coquenão. With a distinct and vibrant contemporary feel, which is nonetheless firmly rooted in the past, Batida combines excerpts from 1970s Angolan songs with contemporary electronic dance music. The music is the starting point, but the project explores other fields via dance, poetry, graphic art, photography, radio and video, including political and social commentary but always maintaining a festive atmosphere. What began as a radio programme in order to promote new African music has slowly evolved into a collaborative project that cuts across continents and encompasses live performances with dancers, DJs, MCs and images, and now includes an album released by Soundway Records in 2012. Batida began with the weekly radio programme that RDP granted to Pedro in 2006, in order to disseminate new African music and African influences as part of an investigation by artists in relation to past influences in order to update new musical styles. Pedro soon discovered that there was a huge gap between tradition and new electronic music in Angola. In order to overcome the shortage of music for his radio programme he began to create musical tracks aligned with his perspective of establishing relations between these two highly distinct musical universes. With the contribution of rappers from Angola and Lisbon, the Batida project progressively solidified via hits such as “Bazuka”. The next challenge was to transform Batida into a live concert. As with the music, Pedro wanted the performance to encompass new and old elements. In the concerts he projects recent images and archive material - from the streets of Angola, including the tribal universe and fragments from tribal life - behind the drummers, MCs and dancers. The associated dancing also derives from the combination of tradition and new trends associated to electronic music. As a result, dancers accompany the group during live performances of Batida. There is a notorious and painstaking attention to details, costumes and set design, from the accessories to the images used, without ever forgetting the constant and contagious party atmosphere. 01h10 POP / ELECTRONIC MUSIC THE CRYSTAL ARK Venue: E7 Prado Duration: 1 hour and 10 minutes Gavin Russom was known in the DFA studios as “the wizard”. This title not only came from his masterful construction and manipulation of analogue synthesisers (which led him to join the live performances of LCD Soundsystem until their last tour), but also in his special interest in the magical and ritualistic potential of music, this “untameable force”. In his own words, “composing music is like taking this big unmanageable energy and channelling it into something that expresses something, giving it a meaning and a purpose.” Russom’s new project, The Crystal Ark, arose from this same spirit. Inspired by music he heard during a 2007 trip to Brazil, Russom returned to his Berlin-based studio and composed the first songs, which drew upon his love of psychedelic rave tracks and his long and deep interest in Latin rhythms, which he had nurtured for various years. He continued to seek out elements that would push the music’s arresting energy forward. Russom invited the charismatic filmmaker Viva Ruiz, to join the project and add fevered vocalisations to the raw tracks. Another musician then joined the group, Alberto Lopez, in a growing ecstatic enchantment, in which polyrhythmic drumming played a decisive role. On his return to New York, The Crystal Ark continued with its cross-blend of genres, languages, and sounds – and increasingly reflected the intensity, physicality and sexuality that pervades the city in which it was made. The band was also expanded in live performances with two vocalists and former members of LCD Soundsystem: the master of electronic music, Matt Thornley and the bass player Tyler Pope (who also performed with !!! and Out Hud). Live performances further the band’s body-centric agenda by seamlessly integrating the dancers into a vivid performance that contributes to express the physicality transported by the electrifying sounds of The Crystal Ark. 02h30 POP / ELECTRONIC MUSIC OST & KJEX Venue: E7 Prado Duration: 1 hour Over recent years we have seen growing affirmation of Norway as a source of some of the strongest dance and music propositions. In addition to acclaimed names such as Lindstrom, Prins Thomas and Todd Terje, other musicians have also appeared on the scene, such as Mungolian Jetset or their accomplices Ost & Kjex, a duo formed in around 2004 by “Terminator Kjex” and “Cheesy”. Ost & Kjex literally means “Cheese & Biscuits”. Their debut album resulted from two years of studio work and was entirely composed by sounds from – guess what! – cheese and biscuits. “Some But Not All Cheeses Come From The Moon” won a nomination for best electronica album in the Norwegian Grammies, which recognized the quality of their work, in which a painstaking digital construction of elements from House, Electro and Disco contrast with the mundane origin of the sounds and the comic nature of the themes. In this manner the duo has consolidated cult status in Norway. They achieved international recognition with their second album “Cajun Lunch”, in 2010. This work was released by the label Diynamic run by the Croatian house don, Solomun, one of Europe’s most prestigious producers and DJs with whom they have worked since 2008. The album is aligned with Diynamic’s exuberant and melodic House music, and presents various voices and guest musicians, supremely allying the beat of dance music with the construction of the songs. On the album cover, the duo appear in pastel coloured suits and bowler hats, which have become their trademark image. They have also worked with the DJ, Jamie Jones, in a project entitled Summertime and are currently working with dOP, a group which provided a powerful night-time performance in the 2010 edition of “Serralves em Festa”. Ost & Kjex have played in some of Europe’s leading clubs and most important festivals. Their theatrical performances include powerful live sets for dance floors. In Serralves they will be joined by a guest vocalist, who will combine with Ost’s distinctive falsetto style. 03h45 Dj Set GAVIN RUSSOM Venue: E7 Prado Duration: 1 hour Perhaps the main guideline underpinning the work of the musician, producer, DJ and visual artist, Gavin Russom is his exploration of the ways in which sound, vision and space can transform consciousness and connect the individual with the vital energy present in all earthly things. His well known link to analogue synthesizers, led to his design and production of machines and scenic devices for live performances, elements which reinforced his vitalistic convictions, allied to an interest in magic and ritualism. Russom’s first recorded output resulted from his intense collaboration with Delia Gonzalez. That multimedia partnership yielded albums and performances and also sound installations. His critically hailed album “The Days of Mars” draws upon disparate fields of influence including ritual drumming, devotional chants, spiritual jazz, 20th century minimalist composition, kosmische musik, European disco and Detroit techno. His next project, “Black Meteoric Star”, was inspired by the use of trance-inducing repetition in early electronic dance music and psychedelic rock. His current project, “The Crystal Ark”, which will also be presented in Serralves em Festa, is an ongoing musical endeavour focused on rhythm, physicality and movement, that relies heavily on innovative sound modules built and designed by Russom himself. His technological prowess is renowned, which previously led him to become the in-house electronics specialist for the DFA Records studio He has been commissioned to build synthesizers for label outfits such as Holy Ghost!, Black Dice and LCD Soundsystem, of which he was a touring member until their farewell shows. A prolific and inventive producer, Russom has remixed tracks for Cut Copy, The Juan Maclean and Caribou, and has DJ’ed extensively in venues around the world. 05h00 Dj Set SOLUTION Terrain Ahead Venue: E7 Prado Duration: 1 hora Attentive and demanding clubbers in Porto are sure to have heard the name of Tiago Carneiro. Thanks to him, Porto can already dance to the sound of some of the most surprising DJ sets, with careful dynamics and selections and structured elegance. With a robust musical culture resulting from continuous and systematic research work, Tiago is one of the leading DJs of his generation. He is influenced by the sounds that, since the genesis of electronic dance music, have reached us from Detroit, Chicago, Berlin or London. With the birth of the label, Terrain Ahead, which he founded with Ivo Pacheco and Luís Dourado, he has assumed the name of Solution for his own work, as a DJ and musician. Following the editorial principles of open exploration of contemporary electronic musical production in various aesthetic dimensions, the music produced by Solution has been based on combining foundations of Techno, House and Electro with a discreet, firm but contained experimentalism, with a distinctive personality, typically exploring the more murky territories of minimalism, including constructions based on crystalline precision. His aesthetic devotion finds a parallel in the exemplary graphic design work that Tiago has also produced, which together with the dedication with which he always works, constitute vital elements for the set with which Solution will respond to the challenge of playing in this year’s edition of “Serralves em Festa”. 11EM FESTA SUNDAY SERRALVES program 3 june 10h00 Performance MONOPOLY? Stereoboy is a twothousandandsuch response to his experiences that began in the eightiesnineties. His work has been tailored to his process of growing up. At the time, the label of "teenager" was associated with straightforward t-shirts, real denim jeans, dirty trainers, unkempt hair, recorded cassettes that led to re-recordings, genuine sketches and garage bands who really played in garages. Of course this attitude seemed to make sense in Portugal. Stereoboy has complexified accumulated years of pop and rock music, resulting in the almost infantilejuvenile simplicity of someone who doesn’t have to prove himself. He just needed to explore another path, show another style, cede space to the "beautiful" and "well made", as a means of perpetuating that unique period of time in which being a "teenager" was associated with straightforward t-shirts, real denim jeans, dirty trainers, unkempt hair, recorded cassettes that led to re-recordings, genuine sketches and garage bands who really played in garages. Of course this attitude seemed to make sense in Portugal. Stereoboy is Luís Salgado. Beins is recognized as one of Europe’s most important percussionists working within the field of free music, improvisation and composition, distinguished by his refined sense for temporal structures and timbre. Dafeldecker is a leading composer and improviser who in addition to his work with the double bass, has pursued research within the field of acoustics and electronics and constituted a personal sound archive on the basis of this work. Wooley is one of the world’s most accomplished trumpet-players, and a leading figure in the vibrant world of jazz, improvisation, noise and sound exploration which reaches us from Brooklyn. The Portuguese participants include the musician and sound designer, João Martins. A composer and improviser, as a saxophonist, he also explores electronic processing tools and new instruments which he has built himself. He regularly works for the Visões Úteis theatre company and is a member of various collectives, such as the Space Ensemble, Lost Gorbachevs, F.R.I.C.S,, amongst others. Diana Combo, aka Eosin (an anagram of “noise”), has developed an experimental work in the field of sound performance and production. She began to work with warped vinyl records and then began to experiment with noises and textures deriving from records and field recordings. As with João Martins, she recently formed part of an exploratory project, combining musical, sound and gestural composition and improvisation, led by Andrea Neumann which premiered in the Trama festival in 2011. 15h00 IMPROVISATION/ EXPERIMENTAL MUSIC NATE WOOLEY Venue: B3 Museu, Sala de exposições Duration: 30 minutes Free admission subject to available space Nate Wooley has been gathering international acclaim for his idiosyncratic trumpet language. Time Out New York has called him “an iconoclastic trumpeter”, and Dave Douglas has said, “Nate Wooley is one of the most interesting and unusual trumpet players living today, and that is without hyperbole”. Wooley has consistently pushed beyond the physical boundaries of the instrument through deconstruction of the instrument itself and its historical context. In solo concerts, he has striven to achieve a special intimacy normally based on the combination of acoustic and amplified sounds that lead to virtuous abstractionism and melodic sincerity. His solo performances are appreciated for their human character emphasised by a certain sense of vulnerability and the desire to experiment with his own physical boundaries, simultaneously including the audience as part of this experience. © Susan Levenstein EXPERIMENTAL MUSIC OH BRASS ON THE GRASS ALAS HIP HOP MUSIC CAPICUA Partner: Vice Venue: D3 Ténis Duration: 30 minutes The name may seem to be new, but Capicua is a well-kept secret that has been guarded too long by Portuguese Hip Hop. Specifically since the mid-1990s in Porto, when she painted in the streets with boys, and was invincible amongst the first writers and was a powerful MC. A lady in charge of her own destiny, an eternal militant of the unexpected, Capicua isn’t easy to label. Although she is far from the typical "robot portrait" it’s Rap which makes her heart beat at 120 bpm's. It was precisely her captive out-of-the-box attitude that won the approval of her peers. In real life, Ana grew up in a happy family, had a Marxist education, studied sociology and then a PhD in Barcelona and as she approached the age of 30 forged her own identity as a cross between a tomboy, telenovela-addicted housewife and an iron willed resident of Porto! After two EP’s recorded with a group and a solo mixtape with beats by DJ Premier and countless collaborations in projects by some of Portugal’s most highly regarded producers and DJs, Capicua has confirmed her musical trajectory with a more ambitious album. With agile rhyming and pungent lyrics, she has grown in stature, backed by instrumentals by D-One, Ruas, Sam the Kid, Xeg or Nelassassin. She faces the moment and movement, with her own distinctive identity, with sensibility, good humour and a sense of daring. Tender and ferocious, intimate and torrential, Capicua rhymes with her own identity, as a rare and precious thing. Her album was released by Optimus Discos in February 2012. The single has a beat by Sam the Kid and its title, "Maria Capaz" (Streetwise Tomboy), runs the risk of becoming her nickname. The company’s name is based on a book, which served as the basis for its study material. This choice suggests an interest in animal species and their behaviour. Improvisation is one of the methods used in order to explore the universe of movement and its potentialities – thus constituting a tool that is used in the analysis of forms, rhythms, qualities and mutual relations with space and other external influences such as sound and music. Hence, taking advantage of the architectural potential of Serralves Villa and the presence of one of the most imaginative improvisational drummers working in the field of free improvisation, Chris Corsano, we have invited Hauert and his dance Company to work alongside Corsano in an unprecedented collaboration. Corsano’s free spirit and his mastery of both exploration and construction of textures and surprising rhythmic metrics has ranked him amongst post-free jazz and improvisation musicians (such as Paul Flaherty, Evan Parker or Thurston Moore, of the Sonic Youth), and also in partnerships with jam rock groups connected to new psychedelism, such as the Sunburned Hand of the Man, Six Organs of Admittance or the Vibracathedral Orchestra. With vast experience of musical collaboration, Corsano will be challenged to expand his field of improvisation, by working with the movements of the dancers of the ZOO Company. The collective was found in the spring of 2007, at the initiative of the German Music Council, in order to serve as a cultural ambassador for Germany, Portugal and Slovenia during their respective presidencies of the European Community. Since then, the orchestra has encouraged the creative development of young musicians from the three countries and served as an important means of disseminating their work. In 2007, the EMJO staged various concerts in Portugal, including the concert that marked the closure of the Portuguese Presidency of the European Community, coordinated by the double bass player Zé Eduardo. Internationally acclaimed as one of the most original European contemporary jazz groups, the EMJO has already forged its own identity, based on a series of original works that have been primarily commissioned from its own musicians. Its repertoire includes themes composed by Zé Eduardo, Paulo Gomes, Andreia Pinto-Correia, Paulo Perfeito, Susana Santos Silva (in addition to the “naturalised” musicians, Claus Nymark and Lars Arens), who are just some of the Portuguese names who have successively participated in the adventure of the EMJO. In 2012, the Portuguese musicians playing in the orchestra are Susana Santos Silva (trumpet), Rui Teixeira (baritone sax), Paulo Perfeito (trombone), Rui Bandeira (trombone) and André Carvalho (double bass). The creative energy and ideas underpinning John Cage’s work combine a mixture of renewal and rupture with the structural and creative principles of the music of his time. He turned his back on tradition and broke with established forms and conventions and rejected harmony as the main subject of composition, thus assuming a pioneering role and counterweight to established dodecaphonic thinking, following in the footsteps of his mentor, Schoenberg. Based on the challenging music of John Cage and Tom Johnson, this concert - which reproduces the core concept of the Promenade Concerts of the Coliseu do Porto, offering informal interaction and explanations with the public - will explore some of the new musical possibilities engendered by contemporary musical creation. 18h30 Performance MONOPOLY? Their strong desire to continue to play together has spawned this new concert in Serralves em Festa. Costa has a Jazz degree from ESMAE and his work has recently achieved national and international recognition through his participation in the project, Nebulosa by Hugo Carvalhais, performing alongside Tim Berne. Queijo also has a Jazz degree from ESMAE and has participated in various projects, ranging from improvisation to pop music. He is a member of the Educational Service team of the Casa da Música and has specialised in producing workshops on percussion and installations, in particular in special contexts such as working with blind people. Nicholas Bussmann has shed his skin once again, now transforming into Nicholas Desamory to release “like you” – a House album of such warmth and rough elegance, it will leave the scene all excited. House has always been an open genre, allowing to sample, adapt and incorporate other styles. On “like you” however, each of the 7 tracks opens a new window, one leading to Bollywood, another one to Bernhard Herrmann, and the next time it might be Morton Feldmann. It’s the reduced string and vocal arrangements that lead to this album’s specific sound – the warmth – and evoke the great Norman Whitfield. But all of the sudden the sound changes direction again to make us realize: It is 2012! And this is how House music has to be in 2012. In recent years, Nicholas Bussmann has brought manifold works into being. His last release was a co-operational album with Chico Mello: Telebossa – a mélange of Brazilian songwriting, precise electronics and minimal music, receiving rave reviews and gaining nominations for many rankings of the year. In addition, together with drummer Martin Brandlmayer (Radian) Nicholas Bussmann released two complementary electro-acoustic albums: Kapital Band 1 “2 CD” and “Playing by Numbers” and in 2010, he brought to stage a concept for a modernized opera with Barnes Dance. Hence it is not surprising to find several illustrious guests on his new record: Hanno Leichtmann, Florina Speth and Todosch support as instrumentalists. And alongside Nicholas Desamory, Charles Ndubisi, Yusuf Ergün and notably Lucile Desamory lend their voices to the album. At Serralves, there will be the music The Irrepressibles world premiere of the project in an original live format which combines Bussmann with the guest Portuguese vocalists. “like you” will be officially launched at the end of June 2012. 20h30 IMPROVISATION MUSIC ALVIN CURRAN Partner: Câmara Municipal do Porto, Porto Lazer, Projecto Manobras no Porto Venue: F2 Casa de Serralves Duration: 30 minutes Free admission subject to available space Alvin Curran was the co-founder of the seminal group, Musica Elettronica Viva (MEV). He continues to belong to its core nucleus, together with Richard Teitelbaum and Frederic Rzewski. Created in the 1960s, MEV proposed to break with the conventions of contemporary erudite music, refusing, in particular, the musical score, and also attempted to break free from conventions imposed by jazz. Improvisation thus became an essential working instrument, and Curran became one of the leading musicians associated to this practice. It should therefore come as no surprise that he has collaborated with the likes of AMM, Steve Lacy, Anthony Braxton or Evan Parker amongst many others, with whom Curran normally plays keyboards and various electronic instruments and devices. 21h30 23h00 CLOSING CONCERT Venue: B2 Auditório Duration: 1 hour and 20 minutes Max Capacity: 250 people POP ROCK MUSIC NUDE THE IRREPRESSIBLES CONTEMPORARY DANCE ACCORDS THOMAS HAUERT AND ZOO COMPANY 22h00 CONTEMPORARY CIRCUS FOTÉ FORÉ MANDINGUE COMPANY, CRIATED BY DE LUC RICHARD AND RICHARD DJOUDI Venue: A3 Clareira das Azinheiras Duration: 1 hour Max Capacity: 1000 people Venue: E7 Prado Duration: 1 hour The closing act of the 2012 edition of Serralves will be provided by the British band, The Irrepressibles. The band is constituted by 9 musicians, some with classical training while others hail from the world of pop music. The group’s central figure is the vocalist Jamie McDermott (who also plays the guitar). His counter tenor voice, using falsetto and dark timbres, conjures up universes that have enabled comparisons with Elvis or Bryan Ferry, and also the Swan Prince in Matthew Bourne’s “Swan Lake” or Titania, the imperious queen of the fairies in “Midsummer’s Night Dream”. The band’s compositions are melodic, complex and denote extremely refined emotional power. The entire orchestra becomes involved in a magical environment, marked by careful staging and burlesque theatricality, in which the musicians become performers, who don’t only perform the music but also the choreographic elements. The concerts of The Irrepressibles are powerful and spectacular artistic projects. The music is fluid and sophisticated, the atmosphere is meticulously staged, the lighting, multimedia projections, wardrobe, makeup and choreography are mixed together in a sophisticated manner. Sound landscapes with natural timbres are created, which are sometimes electronically manipulated, in which instruments that are typically associated to rock, such as percussion, electric guitar and keyboards, coexist with the violin, viola, cello, double bass, clarinet and saxophone. This orchestra has achieved major international acclaim and has participated in top international festivals such as the Latitude Festival and the Paris Quartier d'Été. It has also performed in leading European institutions and performance venues such as the Victoria and Albert Museum, Barbican and Queen Elisabeth Hall, in London, or the Storchi Theatre, in Modena, Italy. An article in the Sunday Times described The Irrepressibles as "an enchantingly theatrical pop extravaganzama ".
