Auto-Join
This tutorial explains how to use the Auto-Join command in Editor. This command will join
selected objects automatically. Each new (joined) object will be smaller than prescribed
maximum size. Of course, you can join the designs also manually (see tutorial Joining
Designs), but auto-joining will save time in some cases.
Please follow these steps:
1 - Run Embird and click on "Editor" menu.
2 - Open the first design you want to auto-join using "File -> Open" command.
3 - Add the other parts using "File -> Merge" command (Picture No. 1).
Picture No. 1
4 - Select the objects you want to auto-join. In this example, we want to auto-join all objects;
we selected "Edit -> Select All" command. (Picture No. 2).
Picture No. 2
3
5 - Select "Edit -> Auto-Join" command. A dialog box will appear on screen, allowing you to
specify the maximum size of each new design (Picture No. 3). Click "OK" button in this
dialog box to continue with auto-joining.
Picture No. 3
6 - Embird will join selected objects. When you look at the Object Order Bar, you will see
that these single characters were automatically joined into 2 objects (Picture No. 4).
Picture No. 4
7 - In this example, we have moved each part to show how the characters were joined
(Picture No. 5).
8 - Finally, save each object to hard disk. Select the first object by clicking on its icon on
Object Order Bar (or on Working Area) and then select "File -> Save Selected As" command
to save only this selected design. Repeat this step for all objects.
Picture No. 5

Auto-Split
This tutorial explains how to use the Auto-Split command in Editor. This command will
automatically split selected objects into parts. Each part will be smaller than prescribed
maximum size. Of course, you also can split the design manually (see tutorial Splitting Interactive Free-Hand Splitting), but auto-splitting will save time in some cases.
Please follow these steps:
1 - Run Embird and click on "Editor" menu.
2 - Open the design you want to auto-split by selecting "File -> Open" (Picture No. 1).
Picture No. 1
3 - Select "Edit -> Auto-Split". A dialog box will appear on screen, allowing you to specify
the maximum size of each part (Picture No. 2).
Picture No. 2
4 - Select "OK" in this dialog box to continue with splitting. Embird will auto-split the design.
When you look at the Object Order Bar, you will see that "EMBIRD" was automatically split
into 3 parts: "EM", "BI", "RD" (Picture No. 3).
5
Picture No. 3
5 - In this example, we have moved each part to show you how the original design was split
(Picture No. 4).
6 - Finally, save each part to hard disk. Select the first part by clicking on its icon on Object
Order Bar (or on Working Area) and then select "File -> Save Selected As" to save only this
selected part. Repeat this step for all 3 parts, so that you end up with 3 separate files. Example
for Viking software would be em.hus, bi.hus, rd.hus.

Creating Custom Giant Hoop-It-All(tm)
You can create custom Giant Hoop-It-All(tm) in case the built-in hoops do not suit you. The
following tutorial explains this process. When you add new Giant hoop into Embird, the
settings for this hoop will be saved to C:\EMBIRD32\GHIA.INI file. If you send us this file,
we will be able to add the new hoop to the list of built-in hoops.
1 - Run Embird and click on "Editor" menu.
2 - In Editor, click on "Options -> Hoop Size" menu.
3 - In the dialog box that appears on screen choose "Giant Hoop-It-All(tm)" tab and then
click "Create" button.
4 - The "Custom Giant Hoop-It-All(tm)" dialog box will appear on screen. (Picture No. 1).
You will have to measure several distances with the hoop attached to your sewing machine
and then fill in the data into the boxes. All measurements are explained below.
Note: All measurements must be in millimeters.
Picture No. 1
5 - Measure the total inner hoop width and height. (Picture No. 2).
11
Picture No. 2
6 - Size of sewing area in each section is the maximum area you can sew out with your
embroidery machine and standard hoop. For example, Viking can sew out 100 x 100 mm in
standard hoop, Janome can sew out 125 x 90 mm in standard hoop, etc. (Picture No. 3).
7 - It is supposed, that on each side of Giant hoop you can sew out in 5 sections - marked as
A, B, C, D, E. Sections A, B, C, D usually correspond to lines marked on the rails of your
Giant Hoop-It-All(tm). Section E could be the bottom of the rail. In case there are no lines
marked on the rails, you should define the 5 sections yourself and mark them on the rails. Of
course, the sections should be defined in such a way that they cover the maximum available
area for sewing.
8 - Attach the Giant hoop to your sewing machine and slide the bracket to sew in section A.
Measure the starting position of needle. Important is the vertical distance between the top
inner hoop edge and needle position, and the horizontal distance between the right inner hoop
edge and needle position. Repeat this step for sections B, C, D and E (Picture No. 3).
9 - You should also specify the not-usable area around the hoop inner perimeter, which is
reserved for needle mechanism.
12
Picture No. 3
10 - In case of Giant-L hoop and sewing at the left side of Giant hoop, the top section at left
side will be "E" and the bottom will be "A". You must measure the distances at the right side
of hoop (red crosses in Picture No. 4). Mark the starting position of needle for sections A, B,
C, D, E while the Giant hoop is attached to your sewing machine (white crosses in Picture
No. 4), then rotate the hoop by 180 degrees and measure the distances as shown in steps
above.

Downloading Embird and plug-ins
This tutorial explains delivery of installation files in e-mails. Normally, you can download all
installation files for Embird and plug-ins from http://www.embird.com/sw/embird/down.htm.
You will find evaluation (demo) version of Embird and plug-ins there. The evaluation version
will change into full version after inserting registration password. You will receive this
password
in
e-mail
after
purchasing
Embird
and/or
plug-ins
at
http://www.embird.com/sw/embird/register.htm.
Registered users: Please note that there is no special installation file for registered users, they
must download the evaluation (demo) version too - see also Installing Embird tutorial.
Warning: Many problems with downloading are caused by premature termination of
download process. When the downloading lasts too long, the process is interrupted. The
downloaded installation file is incomplete and cannot be used. Unfortunately, some internet
browsers do not delete these incomplete files, nor display any error message, and users
consider the file to be complete. Therefore we strongly recommend you to use some
download manager, which allows more sophisticated downloading and is capable to continue
with downloading even after interruption - for example GetRight® software, free full
functional demo available at http://www.getright.com. Another way of solving this problem is
to receive the installation files in e-mail - this is explained in the tutorial below.
Receiving installation files in e-mail:
1 - Run your internet browser and go to http://www.embird.com/sw/embird/down.htm. When
the page is displayed, type in your e-mail address and hit "Submit" button. (Picture No. 1)
Picture No. 1
14
2 - New page will be displayed, informing you that confirmation e-mail had been sent to your
address. (Picture No. 2)
Picture No. 2
3 - Run your e-mail application and wait for confirmation e-mail from "[email protected]".
(Picture No. 3). Read this e-mail and choose which file you want to receive in another e-mail.
In this example, we have clicked on the link with "Embird Plus v8.00", because we want to
receive this file.
Picture No. 3
15
4 - New page will be open in your internet browser. Hit "Yes" button to continue.
(Picture No. 4)
Picture No. 4
5 - Another page will be displayed, informing you that your request was accepted.
(Picture No. 5)
Picture No. 5
16
6 - Run your e-mail application and wait for the e-mail with attachment. (Picture No. 6).
Please note, that it can take several hours till the file is delivered to you, depending on the file
size and the traffic. Therefore you should wait for the file and not require it again. Otherwise
it might happen, that you obtain the e-mail with large attachment multiple times.

Entering Registration Password Into Embird Auto-Copy to Clipboard
This tutorial explains how to enter the registration password into Embird using "Auto-Copy to
Clipboard" feature. Normally, you should be able to insert the password from e-mail to
Embird using Clipboard (Ctrl+C to copy the selected text from e-mail into clipboard, Ctrl+V
to paste it into Embird "Help -> Registration" box). However, if you are not familiar with
using Clipboard, please try to use "Auto-Copy to Clipboard" feature. It is supposed, that you
have paid for Embird registration and received an e-mail with registration password.
Please follow these steps:
1 - Run Embird and check whether it is "Unregistered" - read the text in the blue bar at the top
of Embird Manager window (Picture No. 1).
2 - In case you have an unregistered copy, run "Help -> Auto-Copy To Clipboard"
command.Picture No. 1
3 - Embird will display a dialog box with instructions. (Picture No. 2).
Picture No. 2
18
4 - Run your e-mail software (in this example it is Microsoft Outlook Express) and open the
e-mail with passwords - the one you received after paying for Embird registration at
http://www.embird.com/sw/embird/register.htm. (Picture No. 3).
Picture No. 3
5 - In e-mail, double click on the text with password. (Picture No. 3). Embird will display a
message informing you about the recognition of passwords (Picture No. 4). In case you do not
obtain this message, please repeat this step - double click again on e-mail with password until the message appears.
Picture No. 4
6 - Once the password was recognized and inserted into Embird, you will see in the blue bar
that Embird is registered (Picture No. 5). You can also check which plug-ins are registered in
"Help -> Installed Plug-ins" menu.
7 - Please back-up your passwords using "Help -> Passwords" menu - see more details in
Passwords Back-up tutorial.

Font Engine Plug-in
This tutorial explains how to use Font Engine plug-in. This plug-in allows to create lettering
from TrueType and OpenType fonts, i.e. from fonts installed in your Windows system. You
can even use fonts, which are not installed (to save the system resources) - find more
information in Font Engine Plug-in - Using 'Not Installed' Fonts tutorial. In Font Engine it
is possible to create lettering with satin (auto-column), plain and motif fills and with thin,
satin and applique outlines. Please note, that if you want to use Font Engine there is no
special file to download and install. Font Engine plug-in is installed together with Embird
software. However, you must pay for it if you want to use it. In other words, the registration
fee for Embird does not cover the registration of Font Engine plug-in.
Note: There are no TrueType nor OpenType fonts included in Font Engine. Font Engine is
just engine, which is capable of converting these fonts into stitches.
Read the following tutorial to find out how to create lettering in Font Engine:
1 - Run Embird and click on "Editor" menu.
2 - Click on "Insert -> Font Engine Text" menu to create lettering from TrueType/OpenType
fonts (Picture No. 1).Picture No. 1
2 - Font Engine dialog box will appear on screen. (Picture No. 2). Choose the font you want to
use in "Fonts:" box. You can also choose bold and italic attributes by clicking on "B" and "I"
buttons located at the right side of "Fonts:" box. Type your text into the "text:" box at the
bottom of "Insert" tab.
Picture No. 2
21
3 - Click on "Properties" tab to change the size, type of fill and outline and other properties of
lettering. (Picture No. 3). If you want to change more fill and outline parameters, click on
"Parameters" button.
Picture No. 3
22
4 - Click on "Layout" tab to change the layout parameters of your lettering (Picture No. 4).
For example, you can change the "Baseline", place the text on the other side of baseline,
create bridge effect by choosing some of the "Envelope" etc. Also, please note that there are
several points shown on layout area, allowing you the following:.
A. Use red points to move the character along the baseline.
If you depress CTRL key it will move only selected character, otherwise all characters placed
after selected character will move.
B. Use green points to rotate the character.
If you depress CTRL key, the angle will change by 15 degrees.
If you depress ALT key, the angle will be set to 0 degrees.
C. Use teal points to resize the character, either horizontally or vertically.
If you depress CTRL key, the size will change in larger steps.
If you depress ALT key, the aspect ratio of width and height will be kept.
D. Use purple points to skew or mirror the character, either horizontally or vertically.
If you depress CTRL key, the skew will change in larger steps.
If you depress ALT key, the selected letter will be mirrored.
If you depress SHIFT key while moving the point, the operation will be applied to all
characters.
Please note that undo/redo/reset operations are available for changes in Layout - use the

Font Engine Plug-in - Using 'Not Installed' Fonts
This tutorial explains how to use Font Engine plug-in with fonts, which are not installed in
Windows system. All fonts installed in Windows use system resources and therefore they
slow down the whole operating system. However, Font Engine plug-in supports also fonts
which are not installed in system, i.e. you can use hundreds and thousands of fonts you have
stored e.g. on CD or in some folder on your hard disk.
Note: There are no TrueType nor OpenType fonts included in Font Engine. Font Engine is
just engine, which is capable of converting these fonts into stitches.
Read the following tutorial to find out how to use 'not installed' fonts in Font Engine:
1 - Run Embird and click on "Editor" menu.
2 - Click on "Insert -> Font Engine Text" menu to create lettering from TrueType/OpenType
fonts (Picture No. 1). Please note the 2 buttons located at the right side of "Fonts:" box. The
first button allows you to specify 3 folders with your 'not installed' fonts. Embird will scan
these folders and all their sub-folders for 'not installed' fonts and it will add them to "Fonts:"
box when the scanning is finished. Use the second button for scanning the folders for new
fonts (use it only when you copy some new fonts to these folders and you want to let Embird
know about this change).Picture No. 1
3 - Click on the first button to specify the folder with 'not installed' fonts. A dialog box will
appear on screen, allowing you to enter 3 folders. (Picture No. 2). It is recommended to copy
25
your 'not installed' fonts to 'C:\EMBIRD32\FONTS' folder, but you can choose any other
folder with fonts. Please note, that Embird will not copy the fonts, it expects, that you already
have them in these folders. Use e.g. Windows Explorer to copy the fonts into the folders
before running Embird.
Picture No. 2
4 - You can click on the small button with "folder" button (Picture No. 2) to choose the folder
from the list. (Picture No. 3). Please note, that Embird will scan this folder and also all its subfolders for fonts. In this example, we want to support 'not installed' fonts stored on CD-ROM
(the CD must be inserted in D: drive).
Picture No. 3
5 - Embird will add the D:\ folder to the dialog box. (Picture No. 4). Hit "OK" button to
confirm new settings.
Picture No. 4
26
6 - The scanning process will start. (Picture No. 5). Please wait until it is finished, it may last
several minutes, depending on the number of fonts you have stored in chosen folders. Once
this process is finished, the recognized fonts will be added to "Fonts:" box and you can use
them as normally installed fonts - see also Font Engine Plug-in tutorial.

Objects Order Bar
Objects Order Bar is the bar at the right side of Embird Editor screen. Objects Order Bar
defines the order in which objects would be embroidered if you join them into single design.
You can change the order of objects using drag-and-drop on their icons on Objects Order Bar.
This tutorial explains how to change the sewing order:
1 - Run Embird and click on "Editor" menu.
2 - Open the first design you would like to join using "File -> Open" command.
3 - Open the other designs using "File -> Merge" command. We use 6 characters in our
example. Their order on Object Order Bar is "MEBIRD", but we would like to exchange the
sewing order of first and second character, to sew the word "EMBIRD" from left to right.
(Picture No. 1)Picture No. 1
4 - Move mouse pointer to second object on Object Order Bar (icon of "E" character) and
click on it to select it. (Picture No. 2).
Picture No. 2
39
5 - With the mouse pointer still on the icon of second object, depress left mouse button and
hold it down. Drag the mouse pointer to the icon of first object on Objects Order bar
(character "M" in Picture No. 3). Here release the left mouse button. A popup menu will
appear (Picture No. 3)
Picture No. 3
6 - In the popup menu, choose "Swap Objects" command to swap the order of sewing of "M"
and "E" characters. Check the results in Picture No. 4.
Tip: You can also check the sewing order using "View -> Sew Simulator" command.

Passwords Back-up
In Embird Plus 8.0 Build 2 (and above) you can back-up your passwords easily using the
'Help -> Passwords' menu. This command will create 'PASSWORD.INI' file on chosen disk
(e.g. on floppy disk A:), containing all passwords that are in your copy of Embird. We
strongly recommend to back-up the passwords regularly to avoid problems caused e.g. by
reinstallation, hard disk failure or virus attack. The 'Recover' button is 'Help -> Passwords'
dialog box allows to insert the passwords into Embird and thus to change the evaluation
(demo) version into full version. You can also use the 'Back-up' and 'Recover' commands if
you want to use Embird on some other computer, e.g. on your laptop, and you need to transfer
the passwords to have it registered. However, please note that you may transfer Embird to
another computer only as long as the other computer is owned by you and as long as it is used
on only one computer at a time.
1 - Run Embird and click on "Help -> Passwords' menu item. (Picture No. 1)
