Gardening
Having your own herbs and vegetables throughout the summer can be so
wonderful, however keeping up with a full scale garden takes
tremendous effort. Some of the following ideas can help you keep your
garden, but on a small scale. 1. Save a few n cans and plant
herbs in them. Simply a.ach a
string and then you can hang
your herbs wherever you
please, within arms reach!

2. Take a spice rack, or closet
organizer, and line each basket. This
vercal planter will increase a small
gardening space. What a great way to
grow a variety of le.uce. 3. Stack up flower pots for a
decorave flower arrangement or for
a few select veggies. This can even
liven up your stoop! New Orleans
In April we visited New Orleans, LA. The Big Easy was an experience to be
remembered! The morning we le9 was a bit treacherous, as there was
snow piling up and the wind along I70 was blowing fiercely. Our faithful bus
driver, Bobby, braved the storm and got us to safety. Along our journey we
saw the Oklahoma City Memorial that was dedicated to the lives lost during
the bombing. While in Louisiana we saw the oldest recorded plantaon
home in the state, wandered the French Quarters, indulged in the beignets
and café au laits, ate the amazing Cajun food classics, visited their unique
cemeteries (picture on page 3), listened to live Jazz music, and had so many
unique experiences. If you want to travel with us, we are going to Boston
this fall. Call Larissa for more info! (970) 475Ͳ1131 Page 2 • Evans Senior Center
Mothers Day
Mothers Day
Honoring mothers is a privilege and joy during the month of May. Never Enough
© Reanna Almeida Somemes I know the words to say to give thanks for all you've done, but
then they fly up and away as quickly as they come.
How could I possibly thank you enough, the one who makes me whole, the
one to whom I owe my life, the forming of my soul.
The one who tucked me in at night, the one who stopped my crying, the
one who was the expert at picking up when I was lying.
The one who saw me off to school and spent sad days alone, yet magically
produced a smile as soon as I came home.
The one who makes such sacrifices to always put me first, who lets me test
my broken wings, in spite of how it hurts.
Who paints the world a rainbow when it's filled with broken dreams, who
explains it all so clearly when nothing is what it seems.
Are there really any words for this, I find this queson tough, anything I
want to say just doesn't seem enough.
What way is there to thank you for your heart, your sweat, your tears, for
ten thousand things you've done for oh so many years.
For changing with me as I changed, accepng all my flaws, not loving 'cause
you had to, but loving just because.
For never giving up on me when your wits had reached its end, for always
being proud of me, for being my best friend.
And so I come to realize, the only way to say, the only thank you that's
enough is clear in just one way.
Look at me before you see what I've become, do you see yourself in me,
the job that you have done?
All your hopes and all your dreams, the strength that no one sees, a
transfer over many years, your best was to pass me.
Thank you for the gi9s you give, for everything you do, but thank you
mommy most of all for making dreams come true. Page 4 • Evans Senior Center

a journey in my mind today
I watch the years fly, where is my li.le boy?
The pictures that tell a story of how you grew so fast.
Once a li.le boy with trucks and slides
to fill your day.
A grown man now who changed his name.
A precious li.le flower,
a kiss from heaven was born today.
She'll call him Daddy, looking in her eyes,
his reflecon he will see.
Finally, he will understand the love I feel for him.
In an instant, his world will change forever.
His journey in life on a new path, one filled with
Crayons, fingerͲpaint, and giggles.
Finding pleasure in everyday things, the world
Will look brand new.
I never thought I could love my li.le boy more
But on this day when he placed my grandchild in
My arms I swear I do.
I realize what a gi9 we received.
My child's child
amazed as I kiss her so9 cheek.
I will reach for my son's hand,
to offer encouragement and support.
Yesterday's memories tucked away in my heart.
Looking forward to what tomorrow will bring.
Amazed by the love I have for both of them.
A part of my soul he now passes to her.
The best father he wants to be.
A secret I whisper to him
A life filled with honesty and uncondional love
That, my son, is the key.

Memorial Day
A Mother's Tear
By: Amy Peterson There's more to the story,
than what just appears.
A war wri.en story,
from blood and from tears.
My son went to war,
a very proud man.
He fought in Iraq,
on the hot desert sands.
He witnessed his buddies,
his comrades, his men,
bleeding and dying,
he witnessed their end.
Where is Pvt. Tommy?
He's blown up all around,
his comrades spent hours,
picking him from the ground.
Sleeping in holes,
dug in the sand,
dreaming of home,
but it's become foreign land.
He can't tell his enemy,
from family or foe,
as he watches his friends sent out,
with tags on their toe.
He knows his Mama,
is sleepless like him,
and he tries to send word, whenever he can.
Page 8 • Evans Senior Center
He tries not to worry,
his family at home,
the horror that he faces,
he faces alone.
His mission is over,
he's sent back to me,
he fought for our freedom,
but he'll never be free.
He yearns for his buddies,
that died over there.
He's caught with the living,
in a doubled looped snare.
He screams in the night,
for the ba.le sll roars,
as he lays in his bed,
he reͲlives all the horror.
Nobody heard the fight,
he sll fights,
except for his Mama,
who comforts him every night.
He never will be,
the son I once knew,
the war killed that part,
for freedom, for you.
Great Naon, Great Leaders,
and all those who will hear,
Freedom began on a mother's first
tear.
Memorial Day
Backyard BBQs
With Memorial Day just around the
corner, here are some ideas for your
family get togethers. 1. Flag Fruit Tray
This side brings healthy options to
your party. You can substitute any
item to give it a dessert
(marshmallows and maraschino
cherries) or even a more savory
(tomatoes and cauliflower) spin.
2. Lawn Canvas
Cut a star shaped
stencil out of a scrap
piece of card board.
Pick up some
construction marking
spray paint at Walmart
or Home Depot and
viola!
3. Patriotic Eggs
After halving your hard
boiled eggs, and removing the yoke, soak the
whites in food coloring
until you get the desired
hue.
