Overall Winner is ‘Lost for Words!’
18-year-old apprentice, Robyn
Cooper was lost for words as she was
judged the overall winner of Salon
Cymru 2016 at Y Plas on Sunday 10th
April. Robyn, who works for Tonic Hair
Design in Pontnewynwdd, collected
the main award after earlier winning
Hair-up Level 2 at the annual
competition which attracted 120
competitors this year.
“I can’t believe it because I wasn’t
expecting it at all,” said Robyn, who
was competing at Salon Cymru
for the first time. “I am really happy
because winning this award is going
to be amazing for my career. It
means such a lot to me because I
have proved myself.

to travel when I have qualified and I
would like to work on cruise ships.”
“I have been practising for only
three weeks with my model Chloe

The Judge’s View
Judge Will Eagles, Artistic Director
of Cream salons in Cheltenham and
Gloucester, said: “I loved the new
venue which was fantastic. It was
much more contemporary than the
Swalec Stadium and gave everyone
a chance to get involved, especially
when they announced the results.
“The standard of work was really
good and I thought the colour
category was amazing, better than
the last time I judged at Salon Cymru
two years ago. Both the colour and
barbering categories were very hard
to judge because the standard was
so high.
“The big competition, avant garde,
was great because everyone stuck to
the Chelsea Flower Show theme and
there were a few stand out people
this year.
“Salon Cymru has a really nice feel to
it. The ISA staff do a fantastic job and
everything runs amazingly well.”
Rising Star Charlotte York
The Rising Star award, named
after ISA Training’s Chair of the
Board, Shirley Davis-Fox MBE,
went to Charlotte York aged 18,
from Nantyglo who is a level three
apprentice with Feodora Hair and
Beauty in Abergavenny. She was
also runner up in the Hair up Level
3 competition. The award is given
to someone who the judges think
will be one to watch in the future.
“I couldn’t believe it when my name
was read out,” she said. “I have
been preparing for Salon Cymru
for a while and it’s nice to be
recognised.”

Star of The Apprentice meets her
Inspiration
We were delighted to welcome
Welsh born star of The Apprentice
Charleine Wain to Salon Cymru to
meet Patrick Cameron.
When Charleine appeared on The
Apprentice she named Patrick in
her business plan as her inspiration.
They had exchanged emails five
years ago when Charleine was
establishing her salon in Plymouth
but they had never met.
“Patrick had always been someone
I wanted to meet,” she said. “He
is very inspirational, exactly how
I thought he would be. He gave
me some fantastic advice when I
was setting up my salon and he’s
someone I would absolutely love to
work alongside one day.”
Charleine left Neath as a 16-year-
old to join the Royal Navy and spent
nearly 12 years as a physical training
instructor before leaving to establish
a hair and beauty salon, which was
judged the best in Plymouth in 2013
and 2014.
Charleine was very impressed by
Salon Cymru, which she admitted
was much larger and more dynamic
than she had envisaged. She said
she would love to take the Salon
Cymru concept back to Plymouth.
“It’s a fantastic event and it’s so
good to see so many hairdressers
competing,” she added. “I think ISA
Training and Cardiff have got it right
because the event is very inspiring.”
“People don’t give hairdressing
enough credit. I work a lot harder
now than I have ever done because
it’s very technical and skilful and I
am on my feet all day.”
Patrick said he had enjoyed meeting
Charleine who had impressed him
on The Apprentice and with her
achievements to date. “She has so
much to offer,” he added.
Shirley Davis-Fox MBE said “It was
fantastic to welcome Charleine to
Salon Cymru. It was an amazing
achievement for a hairdresser with
Welsh roots to reach the final five on
The Apprentice.
“I am going to visit her in Plymouth
because she has agreed to support
the Hair Council’s campaign for all
qualified hairdressers to be state
registered.”

Patrick Cameron’s Modern
Vintage Masterclass
Inspirational ambassador for long hair
Patrick Cameron returned to Salon
Cymru to deliver another sell out
masterclass. It was the third time that
Patrick had attended Salon Cymru,
which he said continued to successfully
evolve. He gave a big thumbs up to
the new venue, which he described
as more intimate and exciting for the
competitors. “I particularly liked walking
into the venue and feeling the buzz,
which took me back to my competition
days,” he added.
Before the Modern Vintage Masterclass,
Patrick took a walk about and even
ventured onto the competition floor
during Hair up to have a close look at
the 36 competitors at work.
“Salon Cymru is important because
it focuses on skills,” he said. “It’s very
important for apprentices to hone their
skills and competitions will do that in
terms of timing, balance and shape.”
Shirley Davis-Fox MBE was thrilled
to welcome Patrick back saying that
“Patrick is absolutely brilliant because
he relates to the apprentices so well.”

Beauty Masterclass First at
Salon Cymru
We were extremely privileged to have
Chris
Howells,
International
Make-
up Artist for Laura Mercier at Salon
Cymru to deliver our first ever make-up
masterclass.
Chris flew in from Paris to be with us
and left straight after his masterclass
to catch a flight to Poland to deliver
training to Laura Mercier artists.
Everyone who attended said they
had learnt many new techniques in
such a short space of time in this really
enjoyable
masterclass
and
would
definitely return to another masterclass
next year.
What did you think of
Salon Cymru 2016?
Thank you to everyone who completed
an evaluation questionnaire this year.
The Learner Voice Team really enjoyed
speaking to you and gathering your
views.
We were delighted with the results. Of
those asked, 85% thought Y Plas was
an Excellent or Good venue to hold
Salon Cymru and 76% said that they
thought the new venue was better than
or as good as our old venue the Swalec
Stadium.

Patrick Cameron endorsed Shirley
Davis-Fox’s
Campaign
for
State
Registration during a speech at Salon
Cymru. He said: “State registration
defines who we are as an industry
and it sets standards of excellence.
“Because there are lots of different
standards out there from training
bodies, state registration helps us
to maintain the quality of what we
are offering in our salons. It’s really
important for the industry.”
Shirley Davis-Fox, MBE, is the Hair
Council’s Political Director and board
member for Wales. She encouraged all
