As usual normal activity slows down around Valle Vista. Most all of the work has been done for the year and it’s time to travel and get in the Holiday Spirit. In fact, when most of you read this I will be having holiday spirits in Jamaica! Many thanks to Board member Charlie Stutts who has single handedly transformed the front entrance with good old fashioned, back busting labor. Thanks to his efforts we have a better idea of what we need to do to put together a long term plan for the front entrance….Right after the first of the year. A big “Thank You” to Board member Wes Stewart and golf course superintendent Pat Friend for putting together a maintenance yard clean-up day. With the help of too many volunteers to mention (lots of NFL’ers) the day was a huge success. Not only does the maintenance area look great but $1200.00 was raised from selling scrap metal. That will be put to good use for various maintenance projects for the golf course. Some of you have asked me about complaints that were lodged against the restaurant and maintenance yard concerning unsafe conditions. Let me assure you the complaints were false. It is believed they were made by a disgruntled ex-employee. Both agencies contacted were extremely upset about the bogus complaints which were, of course, anonymous. I’ll keep this short. Have a good holiday and see you in the New Year! Page 2 of 14 Volume 4, Number12 Website: www.myvallevista.org Phone: 928-757-3213 December 1, 2012 9686 N. We would like to thank everyone who helped decorate the clubhouse and donated candy. Thanks also goes out to all of those who decorated golf carts and handed out candy to all of the trick or treaters. Thank you to our judges. Thank you for all of those who helped at the party. It is only with the help of the volunteers from this community that we are able to have events like our Halloween Party. Thank you everyone for all of your help and donations. Our Annual Christmas parade will be on Saturday December 15 at dusk (approximately 5:45 - 6:00 PM). As in past years, the route will follow the golf course, crossing in front of the clubhouse. This year’s parade route starts at Concho and Mesa Vista Dr. It will proceed down Stetson Dr., turning onto Medicine Point to Monte Tesoro to Concho Dr. We will then cross in front of the clubhouse and head up Mesa Vista to Vista to La Jolla to Oxbow, back down to Concho; it will then proceed to the Clubhouse where Santa and Mrs. Claus will get out of their sleigh and join everybody inside the clubhouse. This event gets bigger every year. We are looking for entries into the parade. We even have prizes for the best decorated parade entries. The parade entrants will line up at 5:00 pm next to the fire station. The judging of the floats will be at 5:45 PM. If you would like to enter your decorated car, boat, RV, motorcycle, golf cart etc., contact Karin Stephan @ 692-6750 or Don Leggett @ 681-2608. Immediately following the parade there will be a party inside the clubhouse. There will be story time, Santa Claus, food and drinks. In the unlikely event that weather cancels our parade again this year, the party inside the clubhouse will go on as scheduled. There will also be “Photos with Santa” this year. We will be asking for a $3.00 donation for this service. Just like Halloween, the pictures will be 5 x 7 and put inside of a folder. We would like to ask everyone to refrain from passing, or “driving through” the parade. We want to keep this event safe for those participating in the parade as well as those watching the parade. Thank You Page 4 of 14 Volume 4, Number12 Website: www.myvallevista.org Phone: 928-757-3213 December 1, 2012 9686 N. And this will be the sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger." Luke 2:11-12 Corrie Ten Boom, a prisoner at Ravensbrook Concentration Camp in Germany during World War II, and author of wonderful Christian devotional books, liked to tell the story of the old monk who sang a Christmas song every year at the special services. The townspeople attended and enjoyed his singing, in spite of his poor voice, because he sang from his heart, his love for God quite evident. One year the director told the old monk he wouldn’t be needed this year, because another monk was found with a beautiful voice. This young man’s singing was indeed beautiful, and folks were impressed. But that night the director was visited by an angel, who asked why there was no special Christmas Eve song this year. The director was quite surprised, and told him they had a beautiful song. The angel shook his head and said, ‘You might have liked it, but it wasn’t heard in heaven.’ And Corrie would say that the difference was: that the old monk with the raspy voice had a real relationship with the Savior he sang about, while the young monk was singing for his own benefit, not for the Lord’s. Christmas is that holy time of year when we celebrate the great love of God, that sent His Son to be born in a very unimpressive place, a humble stable among farm animals, with shepherds as His worshippers. Come and worship Him this Christmas. Page 5 of 14 Volume 4, Number12 Website: www.myvallevista.org Phone: 928-757-3213 December 1, 2012 9686 N. I hope this article finds everyone in good health, that everyone enjoyed their Thanksgiving and here’s to a great Holiday season. Pro Shop News: Not too much happening this time of year as we have been experiencing some frost delays, slowing the pace of play down just a bit. For those of you who are still wondering, we are hosting our Membership Drive again this year from December 15, 2012 to January 15, 2013. Our golf rates will be the same as last years with membership receiving 10% off the normal price when purchased during these dates. Please remember that your membership must be paid in full during this period to qualify for the 10% off. As always, don’t forget to stop by the Pro Shop and check out the deals we will be running for the Holiday season. Last but not least, please remember to be patient with the Pro Shop personnel when it comes to frost delays in the morning. We are only looking out for your investment, as we’ve been hired to do. Thank you. Golf Course News: I would like to start the news on the course by first thanking everyone who came out earlier this month to help with the Golf Maintenance Clean-up. I can’t begin to tell you how much this means to all of us here at maintenance, and how great it is to be working in a clean environment again. THANK YOU TO YOU ALL!!! ‘Tis the season for mainlines, so it may seem. Actually, it has been kind of nice so far this year, as we have had breaks in areas that are allowing us to install isolation valves on the back nine. This will help us cut down on labor, water, and parts in the long run. It will also help us to isolate a few holes at a time on the back instead of having to shut down nine holes at a time just for one small repair, allowing us to get the leaking sprinklers fixed as well. Once again, a thank you to all the people who showed up to give us a hand with our clean-up, and a huge thanks to all the employees and volunteers that give it your all each and every day…till next month, Happy Holidays Everyone!!! By Shari Schnell Hello friends! December is a month of diverse holidays and celebrations, many of which feature a variety of traditional and/or ethnic foods. Each culture has it’s favorites and interesting blend of flavors and textures which evoke a sense of familiarity and comfort as time passes. I still warmly recall the Christmases of my youth and the foods my mother lovingly prepared. The memories of those days are embedded with traditions I still follow today. It’s impossible to “do it all” at this time of year and the best advice I can offer is to “keep it simple” and avoid the stress as much as possible. If you can’t do a huge holiday production, do a few small things, but do them well. Bring out your best serving plates and some pretty linen along with fresh flowers and set your table. Presentation is everything. Spending quality time with family and friends over a meal or snacks can be memories in the making. This month’s recipes are quick to prepare, store well, and can also be packaged for gift-giving. Have a wonderful holiday season and happy cooking to all! Enjoy! HOLIDAY TEA A.) 2 cups powdered TANG B.) ½ cup sugar C.) ½ tsp. EACH ground cloves and ground cinnamon D.) ½ cup lemon flavored instant tea [unsweetened] Mix all dry ingredients & store in jar. Use 2 heaping tsps. per one cup boiling water. This is a year-round favorite and kids love it, as well! VELVEETA FUDGE A.) 1 pound butter [4 sticks] B.) 1 pound Velveeta cheese, cubed C.) 4 pounds powdered sugar D.) 1 Tbsp. vanilla E.) 1 cup cocoa powder F.) 1 cup chopped nuts of choice In heavy saucepan, combine butter and cheese and melt over low heat, stirring often. In a large bowl, sift together powered sugar and cocoa, adding in melted butter mixture. Stir well, adding vanilla and nuts. Pour into buttered pans of desired depth and refrigerate. Makes 6 ½ pounds of delicious fudge! Page 7 of 14 Volume 4, Number12 Website: www.myvallevista.org Phone: 928-757-3213 December 1, 2012 9686 N. We have some lovely new decorations this year, courtesy of Coordinator Kelly Dreyer. Look for the tiny reindeer peeking out of their stable in the needle pointed village. Just charming! Take time to make new friends or meet up with some old ones at our Holiday Cookie Exchange on Wednesday, December 12th at 2:00 p.m. You bring a batch of cookies to share and include the recipe too. We’ll be decorating a container to take cookies home in. The library provides tea and cookies for eating right away so you can actually try to make it home with your exchanges. This is part of our adult programming series and is not appropriate for children under 17. But the kids have a special holiday project too. On Tuesday, December 18th from 4 to 5 p.m. children get to make beautiful gingerbread houses to take home. All the construction materials of candies, crackers and so forth are provided free. The kids are so creative and every house turns out unique and so fun to see! Children of all ages are invited to this youth program at the library. So come join the fun; choose some holiday reading; view the decorations and enjoy your library. We hope we’ll see you there! As hard as it is for us to accept the passing of a loved one, we take comfort in knowing he is in a better place. A few words of advice. Please make sure your final affairs are in order. My father was a fastidious record keeper, and thought he had everything in order. I just spent a month back East helping my mother get things straightened out. No one gets out of this place alive, so make it easier for your loved ones when you’re gone. I would also like to thank everyone who voted for me in the recent VVPOA Board of Directors election. I think back to the time I was first elected to the board in 2008. Things are a lot different now. I’m happy to see that most of the controversies are in the past, and take pride in knowing I had a hand in changing things for the better. I am sorry I could not be at the meeting when the new Directors were announced. As I have been “out of the loop” for so long, it will take me a little time to get back up to speed on the affairs of the VVPOA. I see that some improvements have been made since I left the Board, but also some things have deteriorated. I have been asked by members of the Board to take on the responsibilities of the VV common areas and I have agreed to take on this responsibility. My first order of business concerns the condition of the front entrance. It is deplorable. Without the hard work of fellow board member, Charlie Stutts, it would look even worse. Regardless if you were for or against the changes made a few years ago, it’s there, and it’s our responsibility to maintain it. Because of the minimal maintenance in the last 2 years, the job of bringing it back will be a lot harder. With the recent success of the volunteer crew in cleaning up the maintenance shed area, it shows that by working together, we can do anything. In the next few weeks, I’ll be looking for volunteers to help me bring our main showcase back from the brink. The first thing people who may be visiting VV see is the front entrance. First impressions are lasting impressions. If I were a stranger looking to make VV my home, I’d wonder what the rest of the area is like, judging by the poor condition of the front entrance. My next are of concern is the pool and park area. While the park is looking good, I see a gradual deterioration of the pool. Equipment break downs and lack of general care are taking its toll on one of our most important assets. If not for the almost heroic efforts of Don Lewiston, Leon Franklin, and Wes Stewart, I’m sure things would be much worse. The incidents of vandalism and trespassing have been on the rise. My main goal is to reverse these trends. One of the highlights of the past few years has been our Volunteer program. It’s safe to say that VV would be in a dire state of affairs if not for the hard work and dedication of all of our volunteers. I want to thank each and every one who has pitched in to make VV a better place. We can always use more help, especially on the standing committees, so if you can donate some of your time for the betterment of VV, stop by the office, or see a Director, and let them know you wish to help make our great community even better. Lights strung on the chimney with care; diligence, diligence but with flair. There lived a nice couple enjoying the view, looking over the golf course as they toasted a few. When all of a sudden they heard such a clatter, they sprung to the windows to see what was the matter. Then low and behold they discovered a Bull! He belched and he snorted, his belly was full. He left them a gift all covered in dung, that silly old Bull as he went on the run. He veered to the left, he veered to the right and he headed out front, not a care in sight. Then he saw the fountain all glistening and still. It would be his, it was his will. He rubbed it all over pushing with all his might. It teetered, it fell, oh what a sight! “My work is done here,” he said with a sneer. “Maybe I will come back with some friends next year.” So that is the story of how our fountain got tipped. The water flowed out, nothing left, not even a drip. Merry Christmas. Jean Page 11 of 14 Volume 4, Number12 Website: www.myvallevista.org Phone: 928-757-3213 December 1, 2012 9686 N.
