Office of Tenebrae
The Lord Jesus loves us and gave up his life for us. Few of us will
be called to die the way he died. Yet all of us must lay down our
lives with him and for him. If we would be faithful to the gospel
we must take up our cross daily and follow him.

Office of Tenebræ
Tenebrae is the Latin for "darkness." This service, originally the combined offices of
Matins and Lauds on Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday, takes its name
from the responsory, Tenebrae factæ sunt, “darkness was wrought.”
Lamentations is a small psalter of communal laments over Jerusalem, following its
destruction by the Babylonians in 587 BC. The first four chapters are alphabetic
acrostics (with a stanza for each of the 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet), and the fifth
has the same number of verses as the alphabet. Each time the cantor sings the various
strophes of the lamentations, the choir first sings a brief chant-like setting of a letter of
the Hebrew alphabet in keeping with the structure of the book.
The gradual extinction of all lights in the Basilica symbolizes the temporary triumph of
the prince of darkness over the Light of the World, and the loud noise, or strepitus, at
the conclusion of the service suggests the earthquake described in the Passion narratives.
The single candle left burning is the symbol and promise of Christ's triumph over death
and darkness.

Concluding Prayer
The one remaining candle is borne down the center aisle. Only after the candle has completely
disappeared into the foyer of the Basilica is the “strepitus,” or sustained noise, to begin.
Once the candle reemerges into the Basilica, the noise ceases. The ministers, followed by the
assembly, then depart in silence.
Let the paschal fast be kept sacred. Let it be observed everywhere on Good Friday and, where
possible, prolonged through Holy Saturday, as a way of coming to the joys of the Sunday of the
Resurrection uplifted and with a welcoming heart. (Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, 110)

The Easter Vigil in the Holy Night
In accord with ancient tradition, this night is one of vigil (Exodus 12: 42).
We enter it as servants awaiting the Master’s return so that when he comes,
he will find us wide awake and seat us at his table.
