From 14 September until 10 November 2013, the cities of Mannheim, Ludwigshafen and
Heidelberg, under the title GRENZGÄNGE. MAGNUM: TRANS-TERRITORIES, presented
one of Europe’s most important festivals of contemporary photography for the fifth time.
The more than 1300 works by 80 international photographers and artists met with a greater
resonance than ever before at all eight exhibition locations. A four-fold leap in visitor numbers
has been achieved during the period from 2007 to 2013. With nearly 43,000 visitors currently,
Fotofestival Mannheim-Ludwigshafen-Heidelberg, ten years after it relocated from the Ruhr
area, is one of the flagship cultural projects of the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region.
With the focus on positions by photographers from the agency Magnum Photos, and a comprehensive supporting programme comprising more than 190 events, the Festival was widely
acclaimed by the press both within Germany and abroad. In addition to the Frankfurter
Allegemeine Zeitung and the Frankfurter Rundschau, the Sueddeutsche Zeitung, the Tageszeitung, and ZEIT, along with numerous specialist magazines (Art, Photo International, Sleek,
Monopol, Photonews, LFI, Fisheye Magazine, and many more), the international press also
reported on the Festival: publications included Der Standard and the Neue Zürcher Zeitung.

E X PA N S I O N
Existing international and regional co-operations were consolidated in 2013. In this its fifth
edition, too, the Fotofestival worked highly successfully with the French photography company La
Chambre from Strasbourg, as well as with the Internationales Festival für Performance, Live-Art
und Kunst Wunder der Prärie, which took place at the same time in Mannheim. The Fotofestival
forged links with other artistic spaces in the region as well in 2013: with Einraumhaus C/O and the
Stadtgalerie in Mannheim, and the Breidenbach Studios in Heidelberg.
For this year’s biennial, new partnerships with a total of three science faculties in Heidelberg
recognized the city’s standing as a place of science and education. Two projects were realized in
collaboration with Ruprechts-Karls-Universität Heidelberg. At a seminar on documentary photography, Art History students gained insights into journalistic work and compiled articles for the
Festival newspaper. Under the leadership of Prof. Cord Arendes, the Historical Seminar for Public
History offered a practical seminar on the history of photography in conjunction with a qualitative
visitor survey. In the Art faculty, the Pedagogical University Heidelberg held a practical photography
seminar that referred to the Festival project Insight/Out. The students’ works were exhibited in
parallel to the Fotofestival at the Breidenbach Studios in Heidelberg.
PHOTOGRAPHY
IN DIALOGUE
The new concept of involving 11 artistic positions in a dialogue (for example, by Veronika Veit at
the Wilhelm-Hack-Museum or Francis Alÿs and Sandra Schäfer at Kunstverein Heidelberg) went
into individual topics in greater detail, on the basis of exhibits from different artistic practices. This
extension of the curatorial programme was received highly positively and with great interest by
press and visitors alike.

MAGNUM:
TRANS-TERRITORIES
Inspired by the photo festival’s location in three cities, in two German federal states and at
various exhibition venues, this year’s Fotofestival presented photographic positions that dealt
with different territories and regions. The curator Andréa Holzherr discussed the Festival‘s
topic GRENZGÄNGE. MAGNUM: TRANS-TERRITORIES from different perspectives.
The exhibited works dealt, for example, with the concept of home, but also with its opposite:
with uprooting, exile and migration. They enabled a glimpse behind the walls of the excluded
and the locked-up in prisons, asylums and psychiatric institutions. The photographers showed
war and violent conflicts surrounding territories, but common ground, community and the
connectedness of communities of interest were equally present in their works.
The unification of the different photographic approaches made not only the enormous topical
diversity of the Magnum photographers apparent, but also their very different personal and formal
manners of approach. These were underlined by heterogeneous forms of presentation at the
respective shows: pinboard, object, image/sound installation, wallpaper, wall newspaper, or
vintage print.

UPROOTED
EXIL
Under the title “Uprooted / Exil” the topical exhibition at Kunsthalle Mannheim dealt
with lack of a homeland, uprooting, exile and migration. A refugees’ tent, loaned by the
UNHCR, brought the topic of the century – “persecution and flight” – palpably to life.
The variously sized photos mounted on wooden blocks and set up on a long shelf could
also be picked up, rearranged and thus grasped in the truest sense of the word.
ZEPHYR
DEUTSCHLANDREISE
At the initiative of the photo agencies Magnum Photos (Paris) and Focus (Hamburg), the
four Magnum photographers Olivia Arthur, Peter van Agtmael, Paolo Pellegrin and Moises
Saman travelled the length and breadth of Germany in election year 2013, in order to render
their personal image of the country. ZEITmagazin dedicated a special edition to the project.

KONVERSION
Stadtgalerie Mannheim was a venue for the Fotofestival for the first time in 2013.
With their photographic works, Alessandra Sanguinetti and Donovan Wylie reacted
to the withdrawal of the American soldiers stationed in Mannheim.

ZUHAUSE
The exhibition “No Place like Home / Zuhause” dealt with our roots and with the concepts home,
family, and identity. The photographs told unspectacular stories: of word-famous photographers’
own families, of private living space in the world’s biggest slums, or of a love affair in icy
Greenland.
KUNSTVEREIN LUDWIGSHAFEN
COMMUNITY
Under the title “Community”, the topic of the exhibition at Kunstverein Ludwigshafen was youth
culture: Gangs, clans and communities of interest. A slide show comprising photographs by 45
Magnum photographs from six decades was shown on four large screens – music and original
soundtracks from the respective time of creation could be heard in synchrony to this.

In the exhibition “Battleground / Afghanistan” the subject was disputed territories, war and
armed conflicts, drawing on the example of Afghanistan. Against the foil of the photo fresco
papered onto four walls, which enabled visitors to gain an overview of the country’s war history,
artistic contributions and anonymous war tapestries were presented, having been produced in
collaboration with prominent figures and artists from Afghanistan.

LOCKED UP
DIE ZELLE
Under the title “Locked up / Die Zelle” a number of photographic series were presented that
dealt with the topic of enclosure / exclusion. The photographic insights into the cells of psychiatric institutions and prisons were contrasted with the predominantly drawn and painted insights
and outlooks by institutional patients from the Sammlung Prinzhorn inventory. The focus of the
exhibition was formed by the walk-in reproduction of the artistically designed cell of psychiatric
patient Julius Klingenbiel.

The exhibition showed works by the young Chinese photographer and Magnum Foundation
fellowship holder Liu Jie. His photographs thematized the change in family structures among
the Chinese population, which is characterized by labour migration from the countryside into
the expanding cities.

The 256-page, abundantly illustrated, bilingual (de/en)
Festival catalogue reflects the exhibitions’ concept and expands the framework of reference through texts that go into
greater detail. As a compendium of different photographic
approaches, the publication additionally documents the
diversity of creativity within the photographic co-operative and could thus become a standard work in dealing with
Magnum Photos. The print run of 1500 copies was all but
sold out during the Festival.

Thanks to the voluntary dedication of young authors,
photographers, editors, copy editors, designers and the
great commitment of a number of co-operation partners

Heidelberg and Cewe Print GmbH) a 16-page Festival
newspaper in a print run of 6000 copies was published for
the first time. As an up-to-date medium published in step
with the Festival, it was a boost to active PR.

SUPPORTING PROGRAMME
The most extensive supporting programme in the Festival’s history so far, with 190 events, accompanied the Festival over its whole duration and often drew international visitors as well. Artist’s
talks, podium debates, lectures, excursions, performances, film programmes, workshops and the
Portfolio Review extended the exhibition programme specifically according to target group and
topic.

PERFORMANCE
IN MY EYES/IN MY BODY
Performance by Wolfgang Sautermeister on the topic of perception.
Together with a blind woman and her dog, the Mannheim-based artist explored the exhibitions
on the premises of Sammlung Prinhzhorn and the Wilhelm-Hack-Museum.
LOOKING INSIDE
Bus tour of the former US military compound with Larry Scavone (Director of Public
Works of the US Army, and others) and Dr. Konrad Hummel (commissioner of the
Conversion office of the City of Mannheim). The ensuing podium debate on aspects of
German/American cohabitation with Larone McCullom, Dr. Michael Schiffmann, Pablo
Rodriguez, Joseph Moore and Mathias Kohler was led by Cara Schwab. The Greg
Copeland Band played a concert to close the conversion-themed day.
T O U R D ’ A RT T R A N S F R O N TA L I E R
In partnership with La Chambre in Strasbourg, the Fotofestival organized a cross-border
excursion through the Mannheim and Ludwigshafen Festival exhibitions, which was rounded off with a visit to the opening of Retinal-Shift by the Magnum photographer Mikhael
Subotzky at the La Chambre gallery in Strasbourg.
WORKSHOPS
E X H I B I T I O N O F FAV O U R I T E S
The workshops with the Magnum photographers Chien-Chi Chang and Chris Steele-Perkins in
particular, which were on offer for the first time this year, drew many German and international
applicants – one participant travelled from Australia specially for the workshop. The wellattended public presentation of the workshop results on the Sunday evening formed the close of
the eventful opening weekend.
Once the portfolio reviews were over, the reviewers picked their favourites. The top three
favourites were presented as part of the 5th Fotofestival in a dedicated exhibition at Einraumhaus c/o in Mannheim..
PORTFOLIO REVIEW
The Portfolio Review on the opening weekend of the 5th Fotofestival offered 85 participants
the opportunity to conduct a concentrated and effective dialogue with selected photography experts. During individual consultations, art school graduates and freelance artists and photographers entered into an exciting dialogue with curators, publishers, gallery owners and art critics,
from whom they received feedback and new inspiration regarding their works.

Within the context of the Fotofestival the German Photographic Society (DGPh) handed
the Dr. Erich Salomon Award to the Magnum photographer Paolo Pellegrin, a globally
prominent and dedicated picture journalist who has dedicated himself to the conditio
humana for around 25 years of photographic documentation.

MEDIA ACCLAIM 2013
The Fotofestival has grown continuously since its inception.
In 2007 it was attended by 10,800 people; in 2009, this figure stood at 27,000 and in 2011, at
37,000. This year, more than 42,800 visitors saw the Festival‘s exhibitions. They were a public
made up predominantly of photography and art enthusiasts, but also of experts: for example, art
collectors and professional photographers travelled to the relevant city because of the Festival.
Most photography enthusiasts who already knew MAGNUM well were also pleasantly surprised
by the diversity of the photos and photographers.
The media across Germany reported on Festival’s exhibitions and events, which also widely
featured in the media abroad (including Austria, Switzerland). More than 1000 press articles
were published on the 5th Fotofestival Mannheim_Ludwigshafen_Heidelberg. 60 million
readers were reached via print media alone. The equivalence value (equivalent commercial
value) of the reporting as a whole was 3 million Euro.

Within the context of the 5th Fotofestival an internal visitor response analysis was performed
for the first time, with the support of the Culture office of Mannheim. 185 individual interviews
at seven exhibition locations permitted a survey of utilization of Festival offerings and how
visitors rated communication, service and the Festival programme. Individual questions were
aimed at visitors’ access to the topic of photography and at the Festival’s coverage. The findings
provide evidence of extensive interest and acceptance of the concept and topics among the
public. The findings will serve as a basis for organizing subsequent Festivals and are available
in printed summary form to those who are interested.

During the 5th Fotofestival up to 650 hits per day followed the website www.fotofestival.info,
fully re-conceptualized and re-designed since March 2013. The website recorded 107,000 page
impressions per Festival month. The 5th Fotofestival successfully increased its presence in
the social media and on WEB 2.0 platforms compared with the preceding festivals: for example,
Facebook coverage was doubled with currently 1900 Likes, a Festival blog was set up, the
Twitter platform was utilized, and newsletter activity and online marketing was intensified and
greatly expanded

THE FESTIVAL
IN BULLET POINTS
Over five editions, Fotofestival Mannheim_Ludwigshafen_Heidelberg has firmly established itself
as one of the most important European festivals of contemporary photography and Europe’s
biggest curated photography event.
The Festival, which takes place every two years, is devised by internationally successful and
experienced guest curators, who are each appointed by experts from the global photography
scene and selected by a high-calibre jury.
Not only the major exhibition venues, but also smaller venues and art associations in the three
cities are involved. The individual presentations are tailored to the participating institutions and
take account of their specific profile and target public.
Through innovative co-operations and the intensive collaboration of cultural event organizers
and promoters throughout the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region, Fotofestival Mannheim_
Ludwigshafen_Heidelberg sets a model standard Germany-wide.
BASF SE has been the Festival’s premium sponsor ever since 2005 and, with its financial contribution, laid the foundation for ensuring that the Festival found a new home after it relocated
from the Ruhr area to the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region. Sponsors and supporters such as
MVV Energie and Cewe Color AG & Co. OHG have since followed the example of BASF and
likewise contribute to the Festival’s success..
