Yamuna Zake Pre-Conference Workshop 7 Anatomy of the Thigh & Deep Lateral Rotators Using Virtual Experiential Anatomy As instructors of a movement-based practice you know that the best way to learn anatomy is experientially - you work your muscles and feel all the connections associated with them. This workshop focuses on the anatomy of the thigh and leg, which comprises one section of Yamuna’s Virtual Experiential Anatomy program. On a large screen you’ll experience the skeletal structure coming alive. You’ll see the virtual body get into position, and you’ll watch as a muscle gets worked from origin to insertion. With these images and Yamuna as your guide, you’ll replicate this in your own body. This experiential approach can then be used for troubleshooting with clients, and for teaching classrooms of students to understand their own anatomy. Amy Taylor Alpers, PMA®-CPT Your “Second Heart” – and Possibly the Missing Link! The Pilates method is first and foremost about circulation – the “internal shower” of oxygen-rich blood required to “return to life” as Mr. Pilates intended. We are all familiar with how our heart plays an essential role in that job. However, do you know you have a “second heart” too? Often, this second heart is not used as well as it needs to be and becomes the missing link in our vital health. This second heart is the powerful contraction of your calves and feet! In this workshop we will explore how our modern life-style – especially the chair – leads to a reduction in the ability of the second heart to help with circulation. Add to that the prevalence of hyperextension of the knees, which essentially cuts the leg off at the middle, and now our calves are nearly off the circulation map entirely. We will discover the many ways in which Pilates is specifically designed to keep the calves and feet - this key part of our ultimate health mechanism strong, flexible and connected. 2. Ruth Alpert, PMA®-CPT Delineating the Eve Gentry Approach to Pilates Eve Gentry had a unique approach and philosophy on being a teacher of the Pilates method. This workshop will give an overview of the essential components and hallmarks of the Gentry approach via lecture, demonstration, and visuals. Participants will also experience the Gentry Fundamentals as applied to the Pilates Mat work. We suggest that if you register for Ruth’s workshop, you should also consider registering for Marion Kessel’s workshop, Revisiting the Power of Pilates: Eve Gentry’s Legacy, on Friday, November 6 @ 2:30pm as it complements this session. 3. Jennifer Gianni, PMA®-CPT Diastasis Rectus Abdominis: How to Retain or Regain Fascial Tensioning More than half of adult women have pelvic floor dysfunctions such as loss of bladder control, bowel pain, pubic symphysis pain and prolapse. Most dysfunctions include a diastasis rectus abdominis which is the telltale sign of fascial loosening in the core corset. Put your foundational Pilates skills and biomechanics knowledge to work to learn simple and effective strategies to prevent and heal diastasis and dysfunctions that go along with the unraveling of this connective tissue. Learn sequences for healing and advancing the DRA client. Strategies on how to best work in conjunction with doctors and physical therapist will also be discussed. 4. Colleen Glenn-Wilson, PMA®-CPT Side Kick Series - Seriously The Side Kick Series progresses powerhouse control in side lying positions. The series also tones, stretches and strengthens the legs, hips and trunk while improving structural alignment and functional control. Learn the basic series and exercise progression to the more challenging sequences along with important rhythm and tempo variances. Investigate the biomechanics of the shoulder complex and hip flexion and extension patterns with corresponding spinal mechanics. This is not just a workshop on the Side Kick Series; it is an investigation of the Pilates system through the Side Kick Series. 5. Stephanie Jennings Marketing Strategies that Work – Business Session Spreading the word about your business can be done on any budget. This session will review the most effective and affordable guerrilla and online marketing techniques that help you promote your business, generate new clients and keep them coming back again and again. 6. Elizabeth Larkam, PMA®-CPT Balance, Coordination and Fall Prevention: Integrating Vision, Vestibular Function and Proprioception in Pilates Movement coordination and standing balance is guided by the person’s neuro-myo-fascial-skeletal-vestibular system to integrate information with the visual system and proprioception. Learn about the function and dysfunction of the vestibular system and its contribution to dynamic body stability. Learn about the vestibular ocular reflex and the importance of the vestibulospinal reflex that helps to maintain and regain postural stability in movement. Experience Pilates mat exercises that emphasize vision training. Reframe Pilates mat exercises to understand and improve vestibular function. Vary Pilates Mat exercises to challenge the vestibular system. Identify and correct kinesthetic blind spots in order to improve proprioception. Each exercise will be taught and cued for clients who have difficulty with upright balance and coordination. 7. Lise Stolze, PMA®-CPT, MPT, DSc, Schroth Scoliosis Physical Therapist Scoliosis Specific Exercise: Pilates Applications In 2014 the Scoliosis Research Society recognized Physiotherapy Scoliosis Specific Exercises (PSSE) in conjunction with bracing as a viable conservative approach for patients with scoliosis at risk for progression. The common principles of PSSE involve auto correction, elongation, and chest wall expansion with integration of the “corrected” posture into daily life activities. This presentation will examine conservative treatment principles for “at risk” adolescents and adults with scoliosis and clarify movement precautions and scope of practice as part of a comprehensive approach that includes the physician, orthotist, physical therapist specializing in PSSE, and the Pilates instructor. 8. The sixth largest school district in the United States established Pilates Day as an annual event in their district’s calendar. Florida’s Broward County Public Schools celebrated on May 1 with LIVE distance learning Pilates classes streamed into 22 elementary schools where 636 children participated during the day. Kathleen McDonough, PMA®-CPT, MA, PT Modern Running Form: What Current Biomechanics Research and the Pilates Method Have in Common In this workshop, we will cover the most current research regarding best running practices and how that relates to how you teach Pilates to your clients who run. We will review factors that contribute to running injuries, and the science that examines those injuries, and then outline best running practices. We will then go over how those practices relate to Pilates exercises. 4. Deborah Lessen, PMA®-CPT Teaching Technique: A Rubric For Teaching Movement The teacher’s skill in engaging the client in their own process has a direct relationship with the client’s perceived benefits from Pilates exercise. What is your rubric for successful teaching? How do you lead your clients toward self-sufficiency? The goal of this workshop is to stimulate and challenge teachers to mature in their work. How do you grow within your own scope of practice? 5. Andrea Maida, PMA®-CPT On the Order of the Pilates Mat Exercises Joseph Pilates tells us “Study carefully. There IS a reason!” We will explore Joe’s original 34 mat exercises and examine the reasons behind his brilliantly prescribed order of the exercises. Find the skills necessary in each exercise to prepare you for the exercises to come. Each exercise builds upon the previous ones to prepare you for success. We’ll take a look at several examples of exercise progressions throughout the entire series. Come prepared to work out - get the exercises into your body and experience the shapes of the exercises in a cohesive way to better serve your clients. 6. Allan Menezes, PMA®-CPT, MSc. All about the Core All About the Core will provide delegates with a more effective way to utilize the core muscles by ‘priming’ them prior to engaging them for your Pilates routines. We will review - what prevents the core from working effectively; why ‘navel to spine’ is ineffective; why the plank can be bad for your back; why your lateral core is so much more important than your six-pack; and how your breathing affects the core. You’ll be surprised by what you will learn in this workshop! 7. Jennifer Stacey, PMA®-CPT, MS Pilates from the Wings: The Power of the “Serape” and Scapular Muscles Through the Alignment of the Arm and Hand Discover the secret to moving from your wings (serape) and center. Effectively use the two “centers” to enhance performance, prevent and address injuries, back and neck problems. To recruit the trunk center you have to recruit the wings. To recruit the wings you need a properly aligned arm. Learn to align your arm, elbow, forearm, wrist, hand and fingers to connect to the armpit, wings and center while performing Pilates. Learn proper hand placement on the Pilates mat, pedal, handles and straps to promote efficient movement, enhance performance, and place less stress upon the back, neck, shoulders and wrists. 8. Megyn Taback, PMA®-CPT Getting Pilates into Schools – Creating an Irresistible Curriculum Proposal This workshop is designed to teach you how to get yourself and your Pilates curriculum into a public school. The workshop will review how to create a compelling curriculum proposal, including essential factors such as understanding the concerns of the school principal. Make it as easy as possible for them to say “Yes!”. We will explore curriculum content, such as teaching materials, sample lesson/unit planners, games, assessments, and activities for children. Whether it’s from scoliosis or just life, everyone has rotations of the pelvis. These rotations lead to compensatory imbalances. Strong here, weak there. . .it’s no joke. However, it is far easier to manage and rebalance than most think. The world has told you it is complicated. I am here to tell you that its not. I will teach you what you need to do and why. You will truly understand why pelvises rotate, learn a complete protocol of how to address these rotations in Pilates, and develop homework to give your clients so they can continue the process between sessions. 2. Montse Cosin, PMA®-CPT, PhD Pilates for Cyclists In the last few years, the number of people practicing cycling has grown considerably, both outdoor - recreational, cyclotourism, mountain bike, road - and indoor, mainly spinning. It is a fun sport, which remarkably improves our cardiorespiratory fitness, and has very few injuries. However, the repetitive nature of the cycle stroke gesture and the incorrect body alignment can cause discomfort at muscular and or joint levels. In this workshop, we will review how to use Pilates to improve muscular power and correct body alignment. We will highlight specific Pilates exercises that will strengthen and stretch muscles as well as prevent neck, spine, knee, lower back and arm injuries. 3. Juan Estrada, PMA®-CPT Real Men Do Pilates Pilates was invented by a man, and made for men! The misconception is that Pilates is for dancers and a workout for women. This workshop (useful for all teachers!) focuses on working with male clients who suffer from imbalances/tightness in the shoulder and hip area, and how to achieve strength when male clients are hyper-mobile. 4. Dawn-Marie Ickes, PMA®-CPT, MPT Pelvic Floor Precision in Cueing This workshop will explore the various ways to cue and identify proper recruitment of the pelvic floor for optimal execution of Pilates exercises. In the real world, most of us face multi-level classes on a daily basis. Sometimes one size does not fit all. Kathy Corey, PMA®-CPT Focus on Breathing Medical research shows that as we age our lung capacity decreases. We use less surface area of the lungs and they begin to shut down. The small muscles that connect the ribs become weak and they lose the ability to work optimally. We then begin to breathe using only the upper portion of our lungs. This shallow breathing diminishes oxygen delivery and CO2 elimination to and from all our organs. In contrast, deep core breathing increases oxygenation and provides the proper energy supply to all our cells. It removes toxins and brings oxygen to all of our organs including our most important organ, the brain, which receives one third of the blood flow in the body. 2. Benjamin Degenhardt, PMA®-CPT The Universal Reformer To “reform” means to improve by alteration, correction of error, or removal of defects; to change, refine, and restructure. When Joseph Pilates created his work, he was on the humble mission to reform the world, one body at a time. His Universal Reformer was designed as a corrective tool that teaches the quality of movement required to master the practice of his work. Exploring the history and purpose of the apparatus as well as the traditional exercises, this workshop is designed to highlight the dialogue our bodies enter with the apparatus the second we place our toes on the foot bar. 3. Kim Gibilisco, PMA®-CPT, MFA, MA Hip Me With Your Best Shot To date, there are no bona fide guidelines for the pre and postrehabilitation of hip arthroscopies. However, both physical therapists and Pilates teachers frequently encounter pre and post hip arthroscopy patients/clients. Successful outcomes incorporate identifying adequate ranges of motion with optimal alignment and efficient neuromuscular recruitment strategies in a pain-free environment. Lolita San Miguel, PMA®-CPT History of the Pilates Method I was present when a client said to Joe with compassion and curiosity, “What a shame you had to spend four years in an internment camp,” referring to the Isle of Man, to which he replied with surprise, “Oh, no! Those were great years. I had the time and the patients available to me to develop my method.” In this portion of my workshop, I will share many anecdotes, and the essence of Joe, Clara and the Elders as I have lived them. No, I don’t start Mat with The Hundred! Why don’t I start a class with The Hundred? I was taught to start with The Hundred by raising the legs two inches from the floor in the supine position followed by the shoulders, neck, head, arms and breathing pattern of five - a very challenging move for anyone, which can lead to “pooching abs,” arching spine, raising shoulders, and neck tension. Seeing this often convinced me of the need for Pre-Pilates exercises before The Hundred. We will also do my PostPilates standing work to give closure to the class, reaffirming the perfect Pilates Posture. Don’t be concerned though – we will include The Hundred and many other moves from our Pilates mat treasure chest. 7. Hadar Schwartz, PMA®-CPT, BPT Diaphragm Function as a Key for Rehabilitation with Pilates Did you know that your clients’ diaphragm function can become a key to healthy and efficient movement? Are you worried about intra-abdominal pressure during Pilates classes? Intra-abdominal pressure is a natural result of coordinated diaphragmatic breathing and can contribute to spine stability, increased strength and elongation. Sometimes the traditional Pilates breathing and abdominal activation prevent our clients from taking full advantage of this physiological pattern. This workshop will provide an in-depth view of the diaphragm, abdominals and pelvic floor coordination based on anatomy and biomechanics. Participants will receive an updated review on the role of breathing in rehabilitation, and analyze a fascinating case study where the rehabilitation process was mostly based on modified breathing patterns. 8. Spinal flexion is prevalent in daily life and in many Pilates protocols; therefore, we will focus on spine extension, as it is challenging to many and often forgotten by some of us, especially when using an electronic device, driving a car, cooking, working with a client, performing core exercises, and all manner of other daily activities. In this workshop, we will explore the opportunities that the Pilates system offers us to enhance spinal extension and other spinal motions that expand our movement potential in daily life. We will also introduce additional protocols that can be practiced while sitting, standing or lying on a mat/floor that can prepare us for more challenging and versatile spine/trunk usage. We will practice changing our relationship with gravity and equipment in order to maximize a comprehensive and balanced exertion of all the muscles of our trunk. Mindfulness regarding fitness levels, age and spinal conditions will guide our suggestions regarding the creation of personalized programs and the progression of those programs over time. 7. Jolita Trahan, PMA®-CPT Do You See What I See? Dysfunction along the Lateral Line, as described in the Anatomy Trains approach, can influence movement patterns in both the sagittal and frontal planes. Applying the principles she has acquired during her studies of Body Reading with Tom Myers, Jolita will guide participants through an evaluation procedure to determine possible muscle dysfunctions along this specific myofascial line and provide them with a Pilates movement program to address eccentric loading and concentric recoil. 8.
