RAIDERS SWEEP FIRST HOME SERIES OF THE YEAR
The Raiders are one of the hottest teams in ECAC Hockey
and it continued this past weekend with wins over #16
Dartmouth and Harvard. Colgate has know won four of its
last five, including wins over two ranked teams in its toughest portion of the schedule this year. Francois Brisebois and
Jeremy Price paced the Raiders to the 5-3 win over the Big
Green as Brisebois had two goals and Price tallied three
points on a goal and two helpers. Nick Prockow had two
assists in the 2-1 win over Harvard the next night, while
Robbie Bourdon tallied the gamewinner.
SCOUTING THE RAIDERS
Colgate enters the weekend with a 7-23-2 mark and will be
facing its fourth ranked team in the last five games as its
visits #3 Yale on Friday and Brown on Saturday. The Raiders
dropped their second ranked opponent in two weeks with
a win against Dartmouth last Friday. Colgate is averaging
well over their season average in the last five games with
3.2 goals per game and is allowing 2.6 a game.
Colgate is one of four teams in ECAC Hockey that
have had every skater score a point, but the Raiders are the
only team with two points for every skater. Francois Brisebois is the team leader in goals and points with 12 scores
and 27 points. He set a new career-high for points in a
season after two goals against Dartmouth. Four of his goals
came on the power play and he has at least one point in
10 of his last 13 games. Austin Smith is second on the team
with 24 points on eight goals and 16 assists. Kurtis Bartliff
leads the squad in assists with 17 and has seven points in
his last five games. Brian Day added to his career total with
an assist on Saturday night and has 21 points this season
and 106 in his career. Jeremy Price leads all blueliners on
the team with 15 points on three goals and 12 helpers after
a three-point night against the Big Green.
In net, Rookie Eric Mihalik has taken over as the
primary netminder with 11 starts in the last 12 games.
He has a 4-10-1 overall record with a 2.95 goals against
average. He earned his first weekend sweep of his Colgate
career with 60 saves in the two wins. Junior Alex Evin has
started 14 games for the Raiders and has a 3-10-1 mark. He
added his second career shutout on Dec. 4 against Army
with 24 saves and has recorded an .891 save percentage
and a goals against average of 3.22. Junior Bryan Bessette
earned his second start against Dartmouth on Jan. 29, but
was pulled in the second period. He is 0-3-0 and has a save
percentage of .892 and a goals against average of 3.91.
The Colgate power play had glimpses last weekend
with two goals against Dartmouth in four chances. It was
the first time since Jan. 9 at Princeton that the Raiders had
two goals with extra man. Overall, they are tied with Clarkson for 11th in the league at 12.6 percent (21/167). On the
kill, Colgate gave up two power play goals last week in nine
opponent opportunities. The Raiders dropped to last in the
league in the category with a 78.9 success rate, killing off
112 power plays in 142 chances.

3-TIME ECAC HOCKEY REGULAR-SEASON CHAMPION • 4 NCAA TOURNAMENT APPEARANCES
HEAD COACH DON VAUGHAN
18th Season St. Lawrence ’84
Don Vaughan enters his 18th year as head
coach at Colgate as the program’s all-time
winningest head coach. He enters this
season with a career record of 284-268-65
overall mark.
Under Vaughan’s tutelage, Colgate
has enjoyed four 20-win seasons, two
NCAA tournament berths, and 16 appearances in the ECAC Hockey tournament.
Additionally, he has guided the Raiders to
five ECAC semifinal clashes, including his
last in the 2007-08 campaign. The 2000
ECAC Coach of the Year has mentored
three Hobey Baker Award finalists, four
All-Americans, an ECAC Player of the Year,
an ECAC Goaltender of the Year, two ESPN
The Magazine Academic all-District I honorees, three ECAC Merit Medal recipients,
a Hockey Humanitarian Award winner and
42 All-ECAC Hockey selections.
In addition to his commitment to
success on the ice, Vaughan has continually demonstrated his commitment to
the success of his student-athletes in the
classroom. During his tenure, Vaughan
has graduated 99 percent of his players.
Since the creation of the award in 2000,
Vaughan’s athletes have been named to
the ECAC Hockey all-academic team over
50 times.
During his career in hockey, Vaughan
probably never witnessed anything like
how the 2008-09 season went down.
Despite finishing 12-18-7, Vaughan’s Raiders posted a national record 19 overtime
periods, shattering the former record of
16 set the previous season by Minnesota.
Colgate finished the season with sevenconsecutive overtime games. In all, 25 of
the 37 games were determined by one
goal or fewer and one could make a case
for 27 since two games would have ended
with a one goal difference if not for a late
empty net score. Colgate’s highlights
included a 1-0 road upset of then #19
Dartmouth on Valentine’s Day at Thompson Arena; a 3-2 overtime victory over #11
and ECAC champion Yale in the finalregular season game on ESPNU and a pair
of ties versus arch rival Cornell. Vaughan
also watched junior David McIntyre post
a break out season en route to garnering
first team AHCA/Reebok All-American
honors, as well as all-College Hockey
News accolades. McIntyre, who went
on to gain first team all-league mention,
was one of 10 finalists for the prestigious
Hobey Baker Memorial Award.
In his 15th season, Vaughan guided
l
the Raiders to an 18-18-6 record and a
spot in the ECAC semifinals. On February
16, 2008, he became the school’s all-time
winningest coach in the program as
Colgate blanked Union 8-0. The Raiders
enjoyed success during the campaign,
among which included upsetting nationally-ranked Clarkson, which was ranked
seventh in the country, in a three-game
series in Potsdam, N.Y. to advance to the
semifinals of the ECAC Championships.
On November 11, 2007, the President of
Colgate, Rebecca S. Chopp, announced
the creation of the Donald F. Vaughan
Endowed Coaching Chair for Men’s Ice
Hockey.
During the 2005-06 campaign,
Vaughan continued to lead Colgate to
new heights. His Raiders captured their
second ECAC Hockey regular-season title
in three years, and won 20 games for the
third straight season for the first time in
program history. Four of Vaughan’s Raiders earned all-league recognition, including Mark Dekanich, who became the first
player in school history to receive the Ken
Dryden Award as the league’s goaltender
of the year.
Vaughan returned from a one-year
hiatus to guide Colgate to 25 victories,
the most in his tenure, during the 2004-05
campaign. Vaughan’s skaters advanced
to the ECAC semifinals for the third time
in his Colgate career. The Raiders earned
a berth in the 2005 NCAA tournament,
where they lost to Colorado College in a
one-goal game in the Midwest Regional
semifinals. Colgate finished the season
ranked 14th in the national polls. That
year, Vaughan earned his 200th career
coaching victory with a 3-1 win against
Union on Feb. 18, 2005.
After a one-year absence from postseason competition, Colgate returned to
the ECAC playoffs in 2002. That season,
Vaughan reached two milestones: he
registered his 150th career victory in a 4-1
win against Iona on Nov. 3, and posted his
100th career ECAC win versus Dartmouth
on Jan. 11. For his accomplishments,
Vaughan was recognized by the American
Hockey Coaches Association as a finalist
for the Spencer Penrose Award, which is
given annually to the University Division
Coach of the Year.
Vaughan first led Colgate to national
prominence during the 1999-00 season.
That year, he coached the Raiders to the
NCAA East Regional and a final ranking of
No. 9 in the USA Today/American Hockey
Magazine national poll. Vaughan, who led
his team to 24 victories, was honored as
the ECAC Coach of the Year and received
the Howard Hartman Award as Colgate’s
Coach of the Year.
He recorded his first 20-win season
as Colgate’s head coach during the
1994-95 campaign. With 20 victories, he
became the first coach in school history to
win 20 or more games in a season within
his first three years behind the bench.
For this accomplishment, Vaughan was
honored by his Colgate peers with the
Howard Hartman Award.

GAME NOTES
MIHALIK NAMED GOALIE OF THE WEEK
Eric Mihalik was named ECAC Hockey Goalie of the Week
for the second time this season. He posted a 2.00 GAA and
a save percentage of .938 in two wins over the weekend.
He pushed aside 60-of-64 shots, including 33 stops against
#16 Dartmouth. He was given the honor in late December
after the two-game set at Robert Morris.
POISON IVY
Robbie Bourdon should get excited when he sees an Ivy
League school on the upcoming schedule for the Raiders. He has 10 of his 17 career goals against Ivy League
oppenents with six coming against Brown and Yale. He
has played a total of 25 games against the Ancient Eight
and has been held scoreless in only six of those games.
Bourdon has not scored in four games against Dartmouth
for the least amount of success. He has played best against
Harvard with four goals and two assists for six points.
BRISEBOIS ENJOYING SUCCESS
The senior from Montreal currently leads the team in
points and added to his total with a pair of goals against
#16 Dartmouth in the 5-3 win. His 27 points this season is
a career-high and he has led the team in points for three
weeks. Brisebois has scored in two-thirds of the games this
season with points in 21 games. He is now tied for 79th on
the all-time scoring list with 35 goals and 44 assists for 79
points in 135 games. He has never led the team in points
in his career.
BARTLIFF HAVING BREAKOUT SECOND HALF
Sophomore Kurtis Bartliff has enjoyed his best season as a
Raider with career-highs in all offensive categories. He has
six goals, with three on the power play, a team-leading 17
helpers and 23 points. Since posting a goal and an assist
against #5 Boston College at the Ledyard Classic, Bartliff
has recorded 14 points on five goals and nine assists.
He has had five multiple point games since then and is
tied with Brisebois for the team lead in points during the
stretch. He has seven points in five of his last six games.
FIRMAN PLAYS NO. 100
Junior Matt Firman played in his 100th game as a Raider
on Saturday night in the win over Harvard. Overall, the
local product of Fayetteville, N.Y., has amassed eight goals
and seven assists for 15 points as a winger for the Raiders.
He became the sixth player this season to reach 100 games
played. This season he has played in all 32 games with two
goals and two assists for four points.
SMITH UP NEXT
With four points in his last three games, Austin Smith is
inching closer to 100 points in his career. He hopes to
become the 49th player in Colgate history to reach the
milestone after teammate Brian Day achieved the record
earlier this year. In 103 games, he has 41 goals and 55
assists for 96 points. He is averaging just under a point a
game in his career at 0.9.
McNAMARA COMES THROUGH
Kevin McNamara finished the weekend with a pair of goals
and for the first time in his career he had goals in backto-back games. Friday night’s goal was the first overtime
gamewinner of his career, but third overall gamewinner.
The score was the first score since the overtime loss to
Dartmouth on Dec. 31. His three goals this season is a
career-high.
MIHALIK GETTING COMFORTABLE
The Rookie netminder has started 11 of the last 12 games
and has a 4-6-1 record in those nine games. Since taking
over he has a 2.64 goals against average, which is below
his season average of 2.95. His save percentage is around
his season average at .896. Every game has been solid,
except for a rough start at Harvard when he was pulled
after 30 minutes of action in a 6-2 loss. He is the first rookie
netminder to start 15 games since David Cann started 15
in 2000-01.
PRICE IS RIGHT
Sophomore Jeremy Price has been a consistent blueliner
on the stat sheet with 15 points this season after his
second three-point outing of the year against Dartmouth
with a goal and two assists. He is 11th in the conference
with 15 points and is averaging just under a half a point a
game. All three goals have come against Ivy competition,
while 12 of his 15 points have come against the Ancient
Eight this year.
SHOWING NO FAVORITES
Bourdon scored his first goal of the 2010-11 season in the
second game at LSSU with a power play goal coming in
the third period. He has now scored 17 goals in 17 different games in his career. He has the most against Brown
and Yale with three goals apiece against the Bears and
Bulldogs for six of his 17 goals. He is still searching for his
first career multi-goal game. Bourdon had a goal and an
assist in his last outing on Saturday against Harvard.
FULL TEAM EFFORT
Despite the team’s record, the Raiders have gotten contributions from everyone on the team. After Mike Leidl
tallied an assist against Cornell on Jan. 22, Colgate, St.
Lawrence and second-ranked Yale are the only teams in
ECAC Hockey to have every skater score at least one point
this season. With Leidl and Mark Nasca scoring goals at
Dartmouth on Jan. 29, Colgate is the only team in the conference with each skater earning two points. The Raiders
have a total of 216 points on the year, while the Bulldogs
have 320 and the Saints have 227. Dartmouth, Quinnipiac
and St. Lawrence are close to joining Colgate and the Elis
as the three need one more skater to earn a point. It is the
first time since 1999-2000 that the Raiders have had all
skaters score at least one point.
STAYING DISCIPLINED
Bartliff has yet to commit to penalty this season and has
gone 57-straight games without a visit to the penalty
box. Last season, he only went twice, which was the least
amount by a player with 30 or more games played. His last
penalty came as goaltender interference on Halloween of
2009 against Niagara in the second period. His first ever
penalty came the night before against Army. So he had
two-straight games with a penalty and hasn’t gone to the
sin bin since.
THIRD PERIOD MYSTERY
The final 20 minutes for the Raiders has been very interesting this season. Colgate is outshooting its opponent by 36
shots in the period, which is the largest amount than any
other frame. However, the net has been hard to find as the
Raiders have just 27 goals on 329 shots. Meanwhile, opponents have scored 44 goals for a difference of 17. The 44
tallies is the most in any period for the enemy. The Raiders
have turned it around recently with six goals in the final
frame to seven by the opponents in the last five. Take away
the loss to Union and they are outscoring the enemies 5-3
and all four have been wins.
SHOWING SOME FIGHT
Prior to 2-1 win at Rensselaer on Feb. 11, the Raiders were
0-13-0 when trailing after two periods, but came back for
the win. The one-goal win was also the first after going
winless in their previous 11 close games. Colgate also
earned its first win over a ranked opponent in six tries.
Prior to the weekend, they had lost four games against
ranked opponents by one goal. The Raiders won their
second game against a ranked opponent against Dartmouth and was able to fight off a late charge by the Big
Green. Colgate then came back from a goal deficit against
Harvard to win its second game when the opponent
scores first.

GAME NOTES
COACH VAUGHAN AGAINST YALE & BROWN
Under Coach Vaughan, the Raiders have played Yale 42
times and hold a 22-17-3 advantage in those games coming into the weekend. Against Brown, Colgate has its best
winning percentage in the league under Vaughan with a
30-9-5 record and a .738 winning percentage. The Raiders
will look to rebound after dropping the two first contests
against these two Ivies.
ONE MORE MILESTONE FOR DAY
Brian Day became the 30th player in program history to
reach 50 goals and 50 assists in his career after adding
an assists against Harvard on Jan. 28. The senior forward
became the 33rd skater in Colgate history to record his
50th career goal, which came on Nov. 23 at Niagara.
DAY TALLIES 100TH POINT
Brian Day became the 48th Colgate skater to reach 100
points in his career after recording an assist in Saturday’s
loss to Union. He reached the milestone in 131 games
and averaged 0.76 points per game up to this point in his
career. He has 52 goals and 48 assists.
PUT THE PUCK ON NET
The Raiders have outshot their opponents in 16-of-26
games. The largest difference the Raiders have been
outshot was against Princeton on Jan. 9 with the Tigers
having a 44-21 advantage. The most shots Colgate has
put on net was against Sacred Heart on Oct. 30 with 55.
The Raiders had a 34-shot advantage in the game.
ALL IN THE FAMILY
Brothers Kevin and Jack McNamara played together for
the first time in the game against Niagara. The siblings
are one of seven sets of brothers in ECAC Hockey. Last
game against the Purple Eagles, both teams had a set of
brothers with Paul and Marc Zanette and the McNamaras. Kevin and Jack will be playing their father’s alma
mater in the coming weeks at the Ledyard Bank Classic
at Dartmouth on Dec. 30 as the Raiders take on Boston
College. John McNamara played hockey for the Eagles
from 1982-86.
SMITH BACK ON TRACK
Junior Austin Smith had his season-high six-game point
streak snapped against Quinnipiac on Jan. 7 after scoring
eight points during the streak. He has three multi-point
games this year after scoring two goals against Cornell.
He ended a five-game drought on Jan. 22 at the Big Red
with the two goals. He posted a pair of helpers in the win
at Clarkson last Saturday.
SHUFFLE UP AND DEAL
The Raiders have yet to find a consistent lineup this season. Overall the team has used 48 different line combinations in the four lines allowed. The three that have seen
the most ice time together has been juniors Matt Firman
and Nick Prockow and centered by senior Austin Mayer.
The three have played 12 games together and are 3-8-1
with 12 points on five goals and seven assists.
BESSETTE MAKES 39 SAVES IN SEASON DEBUT
Junior Bryan Bessette got the call in the consolation
game of Ledyard Classic and made the most of his opportunity with 39 stops, but took the loss in the 4-3 overtime
defeat. The 39 saves were a career-high and he kept
Colgate in the game in the second period with 17 saves
and 12 in the third.
MIHALIK NAMED GOALIE OF THE WEEK
Rookie Erik Mihalik became the first Raider to earn weekly
awards from ECAC Hockey as he was named the MLX
Skates Goaltender of the Week after stopping 63 shots in
two games at Robert Morris. He was given his first backto-back starts and played well in net for Colgate.
EVIN’S SECOND SHUTOUT
Junior Alex Evin came into this year without a shutout
in his previous two seasons. He went 39 starts until he
earned his first against Sacred Heart. But it only took
seven games between the two shutouts after posting 24
stops at Army on Dec. 4.
MAYER SCORES FIRST IN COLGATE UNIFORM
Senior Austin Mayer scored his first Colgate goal in the
loss to Cornell on Nov. 27. Mayer is playing in his first
season for the Raiders after spending a pair of years at
Providence College of Hockey East. He posted four goals
and nine assists with the Friars and played in 46 games.
His first point came back on Oct. 30 against Sacred Heart
in a 5-0 win.
A STREAKING BOURDON
Bourdon‘s longest career point streak ended in the loss
to Niagara on Dec. 11. He had at least one point in sevenstraight games. He had two points against Niagara on
Nov. 23 with a goal and an assist, while adding a helper
against Cornell and Army.
POWER PLAY SNAPS SCORELESS STREAK
The Raiders came into the Nov. 20 game against Yale,
scoreless in its last 22 opportunities on the power play.
They got two goals in that game and since the drought,
Colgate is 5-of-21 on the power play in the last four
games for a 23.8 success rate. The Raiders have gotten 24
shots on goal during power plays, which is equal to their
opponents.
MCDONALD ’00 NAMED TO ECAC TOP 50 PLAYERS
Former Colgate standout and Hobey Baker Finalist Andy
McDonald ’00 has been selected as one of ECAC Hockey’s
top 50 players as the league announced its second group
of five skaters. McDonald finished his career with 67 goals
and 88 assists for 155 points in 137 collegiate games.
He was named ECAC Hockey Player of the Year back in
2000. He has played for two NHL franchises and has appeared in 584 games. He won the 2007 Stanley Cup with
Anaheim and just scored his 150th career NHL goal with
St. Louis on Nov. 19 against Jesse Winchester ’08 and the
Ottawa Senators.
PEPPERING THE GOALTENDER
Colgate had target practice against Sacred Heart on Oct.
30 with 55 shots on net, which was the highest since the
Raiders posted 70 in 2003 at Dartmouth. They had 22
shots alone in the first period, which tied a season-high.
The other time they posted 22 shots was in the season
opener against Army in the second period.
POPLAWSKI PLAYS 100TH CAREER GAME
The Cornell matchup at the Prudential Center was a milestone for the defenseman as he played in his 100th career
game in a Colgate uniform. He became one of only three
players on this year’s squad to reach 100-game mark,
joining Day and Brisebois.
MIHALIK SEES FIRST ACTION
Freshman Eric Mihalik saw his first action between the
pipes against Quinnipiac, becoming the first rookie to
start for Colgate since teammate Bryan Bessette earned
a start against Harvard on Feb. 13, 2009. The rookie from
Avon Lake, Ohio, made 24 stops in his first action including 11 in the first to keep the Bobcats off the board. He
also got the start against Yale and made 28 stops, but
gave up six scores.
REESE HONORED WITH SILVER PUCK AWARD
Michelle Reese was named the recipient of the 2010-11
Silver Puck Award on Saturday evening at the annual
banquet in the Hall of Presidents. Reese becomes the
48th recipient of the award, which began back in 1960 as

special recognition and applause. It has been awarded

EARNING FIRST SHUTOUT
Junior Alex Evin came into the game without a shutout in
34 career starts. He pushed aside all 21 shots in the game.
He had allowed just one goal in six games in his career.
He took over as the primary goaltender last season with
23 starts and earned nine victories and is off to a good
start with two wins in the first two games.
CAREER DAYS FOR MCPHERSON, BOURDON

AMERICAN WEARING THE “C”
Day enters this season as the captain for the Raiders and is
the first American-born single captain for Colgate since Tim
Brokaw in the 1998-99 season.
ALL- AMERICAN RECRUITS
For the first time under the tutelage of head coach Don
Vaughan the Raiders welcomed an all-American born recruiting class. Two newcomers are from Massachusetts, two from
the Midwest and one from Phoenix, Ariz.
DOUBLING OR TRIPLING UP
Day netted multiple goals for the ninth time in his career with
two on Oct. in the Upper Peninsula. He leads all active skaters
on the team in that category. Smith has seven two or more
goal games in his career. Day also added his 26th multi-point
game. Brisebois added a career-high three assists and it was
his sixth game with two or more assists and 13th with multipoints.
FROM THE BLUELINE
Sophomore Thomas Larkin became the first defenseman to
score this season with a tally against LSSU on Oct. 23. Larkin
led the team last season with 19 points on three goals and 16
helpers. Classmate Jeremy Price led all defensemen with six
goals last year.
FRIGHT NIGHT FOR OPPONENTS
Colgate has played nine games on Oct. 30 or Halloween in
its program history and has a 5-3-1 mark in those games. The
Raiders have played six games on Halloween and have a 4-2
mark. The last time Colgate played on Oct. 31 was last season
against Niagara at home and the Raiders won the game by a
4-2 score. They actually went unbeaten on the weekend with a
4-4 tie against Army the night before.
CLOSE BUT NOT ENOUGH
Colgate dropped its first two one-goal games of the season
during last weekend. The Raiders are coming off a season with
a 6-2 mark in one-goal games. They started the year with fourstraight wins by a goal, including two wins over Harvard and
Dartmouth to begin the ECAC Hockey season in 2009. They
dropped a 7-6 overtime game at Canisius and then the 4-3
loss to St. Lawrence in the ECAC Hockey playoffs.
EVIN REMAINS PERFECT IN OPENERS
Goaltender Alex Evin remains unbeaten in his season openers
in a Colgate uniform. He is 3-0-0 in his first three individual
openers. Evin pushed aside 22 shots in the win over Army,
including 10 in the first frame. Last year he made 29 saves in a
3-2 win over National Semifinalist RIT to start his season.
OPENING GAME FULL OF FIRSTS
Sophomore Billy Rivellini and rookies Chris Wagner and Mike
McCann each recorded their first collegiate points in the win
over the Black Knights. McCann scored the gamewinner in the
3-1 win with the assist going to Rivellini. Wagner added an assist on Colgate’s first goal of the season coming from Day.
ECAC HOCKEY STARTS SEASON
ECAC Hockey started its 50th season with six of the 12 members playing last weekend. The league put up a 5-3-2 mark
in 10 games. Union went a perfect 2-0 with dominating wins
over Sacred Heart. Quinnipiac, Clarkson and Colgate each
earned wins, while St. Lawrence tied twice at Minnesota State
and Rensselaer took a loss and a tie at Colorado College. The
lone win for Clarkson came against St. Cloud State at Nebraska-Omaha’s Maverick Stampede Tournament. Quinnipiac split
its two-game set with Ohio State.
ECAC HOCKEY TURNS 50
One of the oldest hockey conferences in the country turns 50
this year as ECAC Hockey begins its 50th season on the ice.
The league has seen over 15,000 games, 500 NHL players, 300

All-Americans and three Hobey Baker winners. The league
will be doing promotions throughout the season, including a throwback weekend where teams will be wearing
uniforms from the inaugural 1961 season.
FOURTH IN MEDIA PRESEASON POLL
The Colgate men’s hockey team was selected to finish
fourth by ECAC Hockey media. The Raiders earned 263
points in the poll and also garnered two first-place votes,
which was the same as Cornell. Yale was the huge favorite
to win the league earning 25 of 30 first-place votes. The Big
Red was picked second with 288 points and two first-place
votes, while Union was chosen third with 276 points and
a first-place vote. Rensselaer rounded out the top-5 with
211 points.
FIFTH COACHES’ PRESEASON POLL
The ECAC Hockey Coaches’ saw the Raiders differently as
they picked Colgate to finish fifth, instead of the fourth
selection by the media. Yale was once again the choice to
repeat as league champions with a total of 121 points and
11 of the 12 first-place votes. Cornell was given the other
first-place vote and finished second with 92 points. Union
was taken third, followed by Rensselaer with 79 points
as the Engineers jumped the Raiders in the coaches’ poll.
Colgate was given 69 points to round out the top-5.
PRESEASON ALL-LEAGUE FOR SMITH
Junior Austin Smith was one of six ECAC Hockey skaters
to be named to the Preseason All-League Team. Smith
skated in all 36 games for the Colgate men’s hockey team
last season and recorded a team-high 41 points on 16
goals and 25 assists. He posted 13 multi-point games and
had four games with two or more goals. In his two years
with the Raiders, he has seen ice time in all 73 games and
has tallied 72 points on 33 goals and 39 assists. He is the
second-consecutive Raider to be named as David McIntyre
was selected in 2009-10.
WELCOME BACK SCORERS
The Raiders return four of their top five scorers to a unit
that was ranked third overall in scoring offense in ECAC
Hockey and 13th nationally. Colgate averaged 3.28 goals
per game and netted a total of 118 goals.
STARTING A NEW DAY
Senior Brian Day returns to the lineup wearing the “C” as
he was named team captain. He was the team leader in
goals in 2009-10 with 21 scores, which put him tied for
fifth in the conference. He was tops in conference play as
well with 13 goals in 20 games. Day’s seven goals with the
extra skater was also a team-high. Joining Day as assistant
captains are seniors Francois Brisebois, Wade Poplawski
and Kevin McNamara.
SEASON OPENERS UNDER VAUGHAN
Colgate enters another season under head coach Don
Vaughan, who begins his 18th season behind the bench.
In season openers, he is 6-7-4 against some quality opponents. In 1997-98, the Raiders opened the season against
Michigan and beat the eventual national champion by
a 2-1 score at Ann Arbor. Colgate began a year under
Vaughan against either a Hockey East or CCHA school until
2001 when it faced Nebraska-Omaha in the opener.
FIRST DIVISION I GAME ON THE CAPE
It’s believed that Colgate and Army played in the first regular season NCAA Division I hockey game on Cape Cod. The
Massachusetts vacation destination is known for its clam
chowder and beautiful beaches and not a cold ice hockey
rink in October. For four Colgate players it will be like
playing at home. Senior Kevin McNamara and his brother,
rookie Jack McNamara are from Chestnut Hill, Mass., while
senior captain Brian Day is from Danvers and rookie Chris
Wagner is a native of Walpole.

the group as he was a sixth round pick by the Islanders
in 2006. Junior Corbin McPherson was taken in the third
round in 2007 by the New Jersey Devils, while Smith was a
fifth round pick in that same draft by his hometown Dallas
Stars. Sophomore Thomas Larkin was selected in 2009 by
the Blue Jackets in the fifth round. The one rookie is Chris
Wagner. Wagner was a fifth round selection in last year’s
draft by the Anaheim Ducks.
SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS
Yale welcomes the Raiders with a 22-5-0 and the Bulldogs
are third in the country in both polls. In league, they are
16-4-0 and have been up and down lately after sweeping through the first half of the season with nine-straight
conference wins. Since then, Yale is 7-4 in league and is on
a three-game winning streak. The Bulldogs still lead the
nation in scoring at 4.41 goals per game and are the only
team above four goals. They are fifth in defense, allowing
2.22 goals per game.
Yale is led by two scorers in Brian O’Neill and Andrew
Miller as both players have 35 points, which is tied for
third in the league. O’Neill has a team-high 17 goals, eight
on the power play, and has added 18 helpers. Miller has
