RAIDERS COME UP SHORT AGAINST NIAGARA
Colgate scored two power play goals for the secondstraight game, but couldn’t hold off the scoring
attack of Niagara as the Raiders fell, 4-2, at Dwyer
Arena. The Raiders saw sophomore Robbie Bourdon
score his third goal in the last three games, while
senior captain Brian Day netted his team-high sixth
of the season. Junior Alex Evin took the loss in net
with 28 saves. Colgate went 2-for-8 on the power
play and didn’t allow its opponent to score with the
man advantage.
SCOUTING THE RAIDERS
Colgate will be playing a conference foe on Saturday,
but the game is the second-straight non-league matchup for the Raiders. They are looking for its first win since
beating Sacred Heart as they are on a seven-game winless streak. The Raiders are averaging 2.73 goals a game,
which is sixth in ECAC. After giving up 15 goals the last
three games, Colgate has dropped to last in the league
in scoring defense, allowing 3.45 goals per game.
The Raiders have 19 different skaters with at least
one point with eight earning five or more points. Bourdon has been a main scoring threat recently with three
goals in his last three games and is riding a five-game
point streak. He has six points in those five games. Day
scored a power play goal against the Purple Eagles and
leads Colgate in goals with six on the season. Junior
Austin Smith has seven assists to lead the team and
is one ahead of senior Francois Brisebois, who has six.
Smith has a total of nine points, while Brisebois has
seven. Junior Corbin McPherson and rookie Mike McCann have contributed six points as McCann leads all
freshmen.
In net, junior Alex Evin has started 8-of-10 games
for the Raiders and has a 2-6-1 mark. He posted his
first collegiate shutout against Sacred Heart on Oct. 30
and has recorded an .898 save percentage and a goals
against average of 2.89. Rookie Eric Mihalik got his second start against Yale last Saturday with a 6-4 loss. He is
0-2-0 on the season and has a save percentage of .852
and a goals against average of 4.59.
On special teams, the power play is slowly getting
back on track with four goals in its last 13 opportunities.
The Raiders are 9-for-65 on the man advantage for a
13.8 success rate. The penalty kill came around against
Niagara, holding the Purple Knights scoreless in four
chances. The Raiders did a good job staying out of the
box with just four penalties for eight minutes.

3-TIME ECAC HOCKEY REGULAR-SEASON CHAMPION • 4 NCAA TOURNAMENT APPEARANCES
HEAD COACH DON VAUGHAN
18th Season St. Lawrence ’84
Don Vaughan enters his 18th year as head
coach at Colgate as the program’s all-time
winningest head coach. He enters this
season with a career record of 284-268-65
overall mark.
Under Vaughan’s tutelage, Colgate
has enjoyed four 20-win seasons, two
NCAA tournament berths, and 16 appearances in the ECAC Hockey tournament.
Additionally, he has guided the Raiders to
five ECAC semifinal clashes, including his
last in the 2007-08 campaign. The 2000
ECAC Coach of the Year has mentored
three Hobey Baker Award finalists, four
All-Americans, an ECAC Player of the Year,
an ECAC Goaltender of the Year, two ESPN
The Magazine Academic all-District I honorees, three ECAC Merit Medal recipients,
a Hockey Humanitarian Award winner and
42 All-ECAC Hockey selections.
In addition to his commitment to
success on the ice, Vaughan has continually demonstrated his commitment to
the success of his student-athletes in the
classroom. During his tenure, Vaughan
has graduated 99 percent of his players.
Since the creation of the award in 2000,
Vaughan’s athletes have been named to
the ECAC Hockey all-academic team over
50 times.
During his career in hockey, Vaughan
probably never witnessed anything like
how the 2008-09 season went down.
Despite finishing 12-18-7, Vaughan’s Raiders posted a national record 19 overtime
periods, shattering the former record of
16 set the previous season by Minnesota.
Colgate finished the season with sevenconsecutive overtime games. In all, 25 of
the 37 games were determined by one
goal or fewer and one could make a case
for 27 since two games would have ended
with a one goal difference if not for a late
empty net score. Colgate’s highlights
included a 1-0 road upset of then #19
Dartmouth on Valentine’s Day at Thompson Arena; a 3-2 overtime victory over #11
and ECAC champion Yale in the finalregular season game on ESPNU and a pair
of ties versus arch rival Cornell. Vaughan
also watched junior David McIntyre post
a break out season en route to garnering
first team AHCA/Reebok All-American
honors, as well as all-College Hockey
News accolades. McIntyre, who went
on to gain first team all-league mention,
was one of 10 finalists for the prestigious
Hobey Baker Memorial Award.
In his 15th season, Vaughan guided
l
the Raiders to an 18-18-6 record and a
spot in the ECAC semifinals. On February
16, 2008, he became the school’s all-time
winningest coach in the program as
Colgate blanked Union 8-0. The Raiders
enjoyed success during the campaign,
among which included upsetting nationally-ranked Clarkson, which was ranked
seventh in the country, in a three-game
series in Potsdam, N.Y. to advance to the
semifinals of the ECAC Championships.
On November 11, 2007, the President of
Colgate, Rebecca S. Chopp, announced
the creation of the Donald F. Vaughan
Endowed Coaching Chair for Men’s Ice
Hockey.
During the 2005-06 campaign,
Vaughan continued to lead Colgate to
new heights. His Raiders captured their
second ECAC Hockey regular-season title
in three years, and won 20 games for the
third straight season for the first time in
program history. Four of Vaughan’s Raiders earned all-league recognition, including Mark Dekanich, who became the first
player in school history to receive the Ken
Dryden Award as the league’s goaltender
of the year.
Vaughan returned from a one-year
hiatus to guide Colgate to 25 victories,
the most in his tenure, during the 2004-05
campaign. Vaughan’s skaters advanced
to the ECAC semifinals for the third time
in his Colgate career. The Raiders earned
a berth in the 2005 NCAA tournament,
where they lost to Colorado College in a
one-goal game in the Midwest Regional
semifinals. Colgate finished the season
ranked 14th in the national polls. That
year, Vaughan earned his 200th career
coaching victory with a 3-1 win against
Union on Feb. 18, 2005.
After a one-year absence from postseason competition, Colgate returned to
the ECAC playoffs in 2002. That season,
Vaughan reached two milestones: he
registered his 150th career victory in a 4-1
win against Iona on Nov. 3, and posted his
100th career ECAC win versus Dartmouth
on Jan. 11. For his accomplishments,
Vaughan was recognized by the American
Hockey Coaches Association as a finalist
for the Spencer Penrose Award, which is
given annually to the University Division
Coach of the Year.
Vaughan first led Colgate to national
prominence during the 1999-00 season.
That year, he coached the Raiders to the
NCAA East Regional and a final ranking of
No. 9 in the USA Today/American Hockey
Magazine national poll. Vaughan, who led
his team to 24 victories, was honored as
the ECAC Coach of the Year and received
the Howard Hartman Award as Colgate’s
Coach of the Year.
He recorded his first 20-win season
as Colgate’s head coach during the
1994-95 campaign. With 20 victories, he
became the first coach in school history to
win 20 or more games in a season within
his first three years behind the bench.
For this accomplishment, Vaughan was
honored by his Colgate peers with the
Howard Hartman Award.

3-TIME ECAC HOCKEY REGULAR-SEASON CHAMPION • 4 NCAA TOURNAMENT APPEARANCES
GAME NOTES
COLGATE-CORNELL RIVALRY TAKES NEW STEP
This season the upstate New York rivals will be taking
their series south to Newark, N.J. The teams will be
playing a non-conference game at the Prudential Center, which is the new home of the New Jersey Devils.
This will make it two neutral site games to be played by
the Raiders this season. The two teams will now be facing each other three times this season, which the series
did back in 2008-09 when the two schools played at
the Florida College Classic in Estero, Fla.
RIVALRY USED TO NEW BARNS
Colgate and Cornell are used to playing in neutral site
games. The two schools have played each other in 14
different rinks since Starr Rink opened in 1959. The
Prudential Center will be the 15th rink this upstate
New York rivalry has seen and the fourth NHL rink since
Madison Square Garden in 1965-66.
DAY NETS 50TH CAREER GOAL
The senior forward became the 33rd skater in Colgate
history to record his 50th career goal, which came on
Tuesday night at Niagara. Day scored on the power
play in the third period. He has 50 goals and 44 assists
for 94 points and is six points away from reaching the
100-point plateau. He will be the 48th skater to obtain
the milestone.
A STREAKING BOURDON
Bourdon is currently on the longest point streak for
the Raiders this season as he has scored at least one
point in the last five games. He had two points against
Niagara with a goal and an assists, while putting home
goals against Brown and Yale last weekend. With the
streak, the sophomore is ranked 21st in the league in
points per game.
SHOWING NO FAVORITES
Bourdon scored his first goal of the 2010-11 season
in the second game at LSSU with a power play goal
coming in the third period. He has now scored 13 goals
in 13 different games in his career. He has the most
against Brown and Yale with three goals apiece against
the Bears and Bulldogs for six of his 13 goals. He is still
searching for his first career multi-goal game.
POWER PLAY SNAPS SCORELESS STREAK
The Colgate power play has recently seen better days
as the Raiders came into Saturday’s game against Yale,
scoreless in its last 22 opportunities. However, Colgate
has fired back with four goals in its last 13 opportunities for a 30.8 success rate in its last two games. The
Raiders have tallied two power play goals in their last
two contests.
MCDONALD ’00 NAMED TO ECAC TOP 50 PLAYERS
Former Colgate standout and Hobey Baker Finalist
Andy McDonald ’00 has been selected as one of ECAC
Hockey’s top 50 players as the league announced its
second group of five skaters. McDonald finished his
career with 67 goals and 88 assists for 155 points in 137
collegiate games. He was named ECAC Hockey Player
of the Year back in 2000. He has played for two NHL
franchises and has appeared in 584 games. He won the
2007 Stanley Cup with Anaheim and just scored his
150th career NHL goal with St. Louis on Nov. 19 against
Jesse Winchester ’08 and the Ottawa Senators.
POPLAWSKI TO PLAY 100TH CAREER GAME
Saturday will be a milestone for the defenseman as he
will be playing in his 100th career game in a Colgate
uniform. He is one of only three players on this year’s
squad to reach to 100 game mark, joining Day and
Brisebois.
FIRST PENALTY SHOT
Colgate faced its first penalty shot of the season
against Brown on Nov. 19. it was the first one since
Dec. 4 of last season against Union. Alex Evin made the
save on Union’s player. This time it was Evin again and
he stoned Bobby Farnham of the Bears in the second
period after being tripped on a breakaway.
OFFENSIVE DEFENSEMEN
Sophomore Thomas Larkin and junior Corbin McPherson have played in all 10 games together on the
blueline and both have already equaled their goal
output from a season ago. Larkin has three this year,
which leads defensemen and is second on the team,
while McPherson netted two against Sacred Heart. The
NJ Devils draft pick leads all Colgate defensemen with
six points. The Raiders have five defensive players with
at least one point.
MIHALIK SEES FIRST ACTION
Freshman Eric Mihalik saw his first action between the
pipes against Quinnipiac, becoming the first rookie to
start for Colgate since teammate Bryan Bessette earned
a start against Harvard on Feb. 13, 2009. The rookie
from Avon Lake, Ohio, made 24 stops in his first action
including 11 in the first to keep the Bobcats off the
board. He also got the start against Yale and made 28
stops, but gave up six scores.
REESE HONORED WITH SILVER PUCK AWARD
Michelle Reese was named the recipient of the 2010-11
Silver Puck Award on Saturday evening at the annual
banquet in the Hall of Presidents. Reese becomes the
48th recipient of the award, which began back in 1960
as J. Howard Starr received the inaugural award. The
Silver Puck Award is handed out by the Silver Puck Club,
the fundraising arm of Colgate men’s hockey and is
given to a person or people whose continued support
and contributions to the Colgate men’s hockey program
warrant special recognition and applause. It has been
awarded on an annual basis since 1981. Reese has been
with the hockey program for 23 years and helps with
team travel, banquets and the Terry Slater Golf Tournament.
THIRD JERSEY SALE
The Colgate men’s hockey team wore its new third
jersey last weekend and the jerseys are on sale now
with the proceeds going to the Silver Puck Club, the
Interfaith Council and Hamilton Food Cupboard. Fans
can purchase the jersey by calling Michelle Reese at
315-228-7570.
TOY DRIVE COMING SOON TO STARR
The Raiders will also be collecting toys for the Interfaith
Holiday Council on Dec. 11 during the Niagara game,
which the items will then be dispersed to the families
within Madison County. Fans will again receive a free
general admission ticket for every unwrapped toy
donated. The Prudential Center will also be joining
the holiday effort with a toy drive for Newark Now.
The venue is asking attendees to bring a new and
unwrapped toy to the game on Saturday.
IN NEED OF AN EARLY LEAD
In both wins this season, the Raiders have jumped out
to an early lead. The Raiders lost their first game when

GAME NOTES
leading early with the 3-1 loss to Quinnipiac. When
Colgate fails to take the first lead, the Raiders are 0-5-1.
Last weekend at Clarkson and St. Lawrence, they surrendered the lead in both games.
SECURING THE LEAD
Colgate has taken a lead into the third period in three
games this year and is 2-0-1 in those games. The wins
came against Army and Sacred Heart with the tie happening last weekend at Clarkson. The Raiders had a
two-goal lead going into the final frame. Colgate gave
up two power play goals, but was able to right the ship
and secure one point.
THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX
Colgate ranks fifth in the league in the least amount of
penalty minutes and the Raiders committed just one
offense against Sacred Heart, but the team is struggling on the kill. Colgate ranks last in ECAC Hockey
with 12 power play goals against in 47 opportunities
for a 74.5 percentage success rate. The Raiders surrendered three to the Golden Knights, who came into
the game without a score with the advantage. They
are tied with Yale for last in the league and Colgate got
two goals against the Bulldogs on the power play on
Saturday.
PEPPERING THE GOALTENDER
Colgate had target practice against Sacred Heart with
55 shots on net, which was the highest since the Raiders posted 70 in 2003 at Dartmouth. They had 22 shots
alone in the first period, which tied a season-high. The
other time they posted 22 shots was in the season
opener against Army in the second period. Colgate
finished the night with 18 shots in the third. The Raiders have outshot their opponents in 8-of-10 games this
season.
EARNING FIRST SHUTOUT
Junior Alex Evin came into the game without a shutout
in 34 career starts. He pushed aside all 21 shots in the
game. He had allowed just one goal in six games in
his career. He took over as the primary goaltender last
season with 23 starts and earned nine victories and is
off to a good start with two wins in the first two games.
CAREER DAYS FOR MCPHERSON, BOURDON
The two juniors combined for six of the 14 points
scored in the win over Sacred Heart on Oct. 30.
McPherson set career-highs in goals and points, while
Bourdon also had three points for a career-best with a
goal and two helpers. McPherson had his two goals in
the first 20 minutes and assisted on Bourdon’s power
play goal in the third period.
AMERICAN WEARING THE “C”
Day enters this season as the captain for the Raiders
and is the first American-born single captain for Colgate since Tim Brokaw in the 1998-99 season.
ALL- AMERICAN RECRUITS
For the first time under the tutelage of head coach Don
Vaughan the Raiders welcomed an all-American born
recruiting class. Two newcomers are from Massachusetts, two from the Midwest and one from Phoenix,
Ariz.
DOUBLING OR TRIPLING UP
Day netted multiple goals for the ninth time in his career with two on Oct. in the Upper Peninsula. He leads
all active skaters on the team in that category. Smith
has seven two or more goal games in his career. Day
also added his 26th multi-point game. Brisebois added
a career-high three assists and it was his sixth game
with two or more assists and 13th with multi-points.
FROM THE BLUELINE
Sophomore Thomas Larkin became the first defenseman to score this season with a tally against LSSU on
Oct. 23. Larkin led the team last season with 19 points
on three goals and 16 helpers. Classmate Jeremy Price
led all defensemen with six goals last year.
FRIGHT NIGHT FOR OPPONENTS
Colgate has played nine games on Oct. 30 or Halloween in its program history and has a 5-3-1 mark in
those games. The Raiders have played six games on
Halloween and have a 4-2 mark. The last time Colgate
played on Oct. 31 was last season against Niagara at
home and the Raiders won the game by a 4-2 score.
They actually went unbeaten on the weekend with a
4-4 tie against Army the night before.
CLOSE BUT NOT ENOUGH
Colgate dropped its first two one-goal games of the
season during last weekend. The Raiders are coming
off a season with a 6-2 mark in one-goal games. They
started the year with four-straight wins by a goal,
including two wins over Harvard and Dartmouth to
begin the ECAC Hockey season in 2009. They dropped
a 7-6 overtime game at Canisius and then the 4-3 loss
to St. Lawrence in the ECAC Hockey playoffs.
EVIN REMAINS PERFECT IN OPENERS
Goaltender Alex Evin remains unbeaten in his season
openers in a Colgate uniform. He is 3-0-0 in his first
three individual openers. Evin pushed aside 22 shots
in the win over Army, including 10 in the first frame.
Last year he made 29 saves in a 3-2 win over National
Semifinalist RIT to start his season.
OPENING GAME FULL OF FIRSTS
Sophomore Billy Rivellini and rookies Chris Wagner and
Mike McCann each recorded their first collegiate points
in the win over the Black Knights. McCann scored the
gamewinner in the 3-1 win with the assist going to
Rivellini. Wagner added an assist on Colgate’s first goal
of the season coming from Day.

ECAC HOCKEY TURNS 50
One of the oldest hockey conferences in the country turns
50 this year as ECAC Hockey begins its 50th season on the
ice. The league has seen over 15,000 games, 500 NHL players, 300 All-Americans and three Hobey Baker winners. The
league will be doing promotions throughout the season,
including a throwback weekend where teams will be wearing uniforms from the inaugural 1961 season.
FOURTH IN MEDIA PRESEASON POLL
The Colgate men’s hockey team was selected to finish
fourth by ECAC Hockey media. The Raiders earned 263
points in the poll and also garnered two first-place votes,
which was the same as Cornell. Yale was the huge favorite
to win the league earning 25 of 30 first-place votes. The
Big Red was picked second with 288 points and two firstplace votes, while Union was chosen third with 276 points
and a first-place vote. Rensselaer rounded out the top-5
with 211 points.
FIFTH COACHES’ PRESEASON POLL
The ECAC Hockey Coaches’ saw the Raiders differently as
they picked Colgate to finish fifth, instead of the fourth
selection by the media. Yale was once again the choice to
repeat as league champions with a total of 121 points and
11 of the 12 first-place votes. Cornell was given the other
first-place vote and finished second with 92 points. Union
was taken third, followed by Rensselaer with 79 points
as the Engineers jumped the Raiders in the coaches’ poll.
Colgate was given 69 points to round out the top-5.
PRESEASON ALL-LEAGUE FOR SMITH
Junior Austin Smith was one of six ECAC Hockey skaters
to be named to the Preseason All-League Team. Smith
skated in all 36 games for the Colgate men’s hockey team
last season and recorded a team-high 41 points on 16
goals and 25 assists. He posted 13 multi-point games and
had four games with two or more goals. In his two years
with the Raiders, he has seen ice time in all 73 games and
has tallied 72 points on 33 goals and 39 assists. He is the
second-consecutive Raider to be named as David McIntyre
was selected in 2009-10.
WELCOME BACK SCORERS
The Raiders return four of their top five scorers to a unit
that was ranked third overall in scoring offense in ECAC
Hockey and 13th nationally. Colgate averaged 3.28 goals
per game and netted a total of 118 goals.
STARTING A NEW DAY
Senior Brian Day returns to the lineup wearing the “C” as
he was named team captain. He was the team leader in
goals in 2009-10 with 21 scores, which put him tied for
fifth in the conference. He was tops in conference play as
well with 13 goals in 20 games. Day’s seven goals with the
extra skater was also a team-high. Joining Day as assistant
captains are seniors Francois Brisebois, Wade Poplawski
and Kevin McNamara.
SEASON OPENERS UNDER VAUGHAN
Colgate enters another season under head coach Don
Vaughan, who begins his 18th season behind the bench.
In season openers, he is 6-7-4 against some quality opponents. In 1997-98, the Raiders opened the season against
Michigan and beat the eventual national champion by
a 2-1 score at Ann Arbor. Colgate began a year under

FIRST DIVISION I GAME ON THE CAPE
It’s believed that Colgate and Army played in the first regular season NCAA Division I hockey game on Cape Cod. The
Massachusetts vacation destination is known for its clam
chowder and beautiful beaches and not a cold ice hockey
rink in October. For four Colgate players it will be like
playing at home. Senior Kevin McNamara and his brother,
rookie Jack McNamara are from Chestnut Hill, Mass., while
senior captain Brian Day is from Danvers and rookie Chris
Wagner is a native of Walpole.
RAIDERS DRAFT PICKS
The Raiders have seven players on this year’s squad that
have been taken in the NHL Draft, including two rookies.
Day leads the group as he was a sixth round pick by the Islanders in 2006. Junior Corbin McPherson was taken in the
third round in 2007 by the New Jersey Devils, while Smith
was a fifth round pick in that same draft by his hometown
Dallas Stars. Sophomore Thomas Larkin was selected in
2009 by the Blue Jackets in the fifth round. The two rookies
are Chris Wagner and Anthony Hamburg. Wagner was a
fifth round selection in last year’s draft by the Anaheim
Ducks, while Hamburg was taken in the seventh round by
the Minnesota Wild in 2009.
SCOUTING THE BIG RED
Cornell is off to one of its toughest starts in recent
memory. The Big Red was ranked in the national polls prior
to the season, but Cornell hasn’t lived up to its ranking so
far this season. The team enters Saturday’s game with a
2-6-0 overall mark and a 2-4-0 record in league play. The
Big Red has lost three in a row with losses to Princeton,
Brown and Yale. It’s the squad’s second three-game losing
streak this season.
Three skaters are tied at the top of the scoring list
with five points with Dustin Mowrey leading the way with
three goals and two assists. Nick D’Agostino and Mike
Devin has two goals and three assists for five points as
well. Jordan Kary and Joe Devin are tied with Mowrey for
the team lead in goals with three, while Mowrey and Devin
have two goals coming on the power play for the most on
the team.
In net, both Andy Illes and Mike Garman have started
four games. Each goaltender has a 1-3-0 mark with Illes
posting a 2.37 goals against average and a save percentage of .889. Garman has recorded a 3.23 goals against and
a save percentage of .889.
The power play has struggled this season with just
six goals in 38 chances for a 15.8 success rate. The Big Red
has allowed six goals on the kill in 42 opportunities for the
opponents.
