When Isabella Gardner opened her Museum in 1903, it included a grand twostory music hall just off the Courtyard. She continued to refine her installations, and in 1914 replaced the hall with galleries on the first and second floors, featuring tapestries and a visitor favorite, El Jaleo, by John Singer Sargent. In the following pages, we invite you to encounter rising talent and acclaimed artists in the Museum’s tradition of celebrating music. We look forward to seeing you soon. October 6 A FAR CRY, the Gardner’s resident chamber orchestra “The Sea: Tales of Lapham” A song cycle based on literary anthology Lapham’s Quarterly vol. vi, no. 3, “The Sea.” Written by composer collaborative Oracle Hysterical, on texts by Melville, Cousteau, Verne, Homer, and others. Song from the Uproar (2012) is a song cycle based on the life and writings of Isabelle Eberhardt, an early 20thcentury explorer, nomad, journalist, novelist, Sufi, and one of the most unique and unusual women of her era. At age twenty-seven Eberhardt drowned in a flash flood in the desert. Pages from her journals were pulled from the flood and dried, and one hundred years later became the inspiration for our libretto. v PREP TO DIVE (DETAIL) A FAR CRY November 3 BETH MORRISON PROJECTS presents Song from the Uproar: music by MISSY MAZZOLI, libretto by ROYCE VAVREK and MISSY MAZZOLI, film by STEVEN TAYLOR, featuring ABIGAIL FISCHER and THE FIREBIRD ENSEMBLE 12 8585.indd 12 6/9/16 10:41 AM ix art, mance on: mbers ren BETH MORRISON PROJECTS “Starting with a practical dreamer’s sophisticated gamble on a new paradigm for staging contemporary opera, the company is now a potent creative force.” —New York Times ng gs thist, t r dt ere me v PREP TO DIVE (DETAIL) : retto Y YLOR, 13 8585.indd 13 6/6/16 9:37 AM ^ CALDERWOOD HA LL Featuring a whole new way for audiences and musicians to connect: Curated by Shea Rose and Simone Scazzocchio, the RISE series spotlights pop, rock, and hip-hop artists performing in our sonic cube, Calderwood Hall. 14 8585.indd 14 6/6/16 9:37 AM RISE New music series featuring pop, rock, and hip-hop artists Thursdays, 7 pm Cash bar in Courtyard, 5–7pm Tickets are required and include Museum admission: adults $27, seniors $24, members $17, students and children 7–17 $12 (children under 7 not admitted).
