MUSIC ROOM AT FENWAY COURT, 1914
DID YOU KNOW?
When Isabella Gardner opened her
Museum in 1903, it included a grand twostory music hall just off the Courtyard.
She continued to refine her installations,
and in 1914 replaced the hall with galleries
on the first and second floors, featuring
tapestries and a visitor favorite, El Jaleo,
by John Singer Sargent. In the following
pages, we invite you to encounter rising
talent and acclaimed artists in the
Museum’s tradition of celebrating music.
We look forward to seeing you soon.

A FAR CRY, the Gardner’s
resident chamber orchestra
“The Sea: Tales of Lapham”
A song cycle based on literary anthology Lapham’s Quarterly vol. vi, no. 3,
“The Sea.” Written by composer
collaborative Oracle Hysterical, on
texts by Melville, Cousteau, Verne,
Homer, and others.
Song from the Uproar (2012) is a song
cycle based on the life and writings
of Isabelle Eberhardt, an early 20thcentury explorer, nomad, journalist,
novelist, Sufi, and one of the most
unique and unusual women of her
era. At age twenty-seven Eberhardt
drowned in a flash flood in the
desert. Pages from her journals were
pulled from the flood and dried,
and one hundred years later became
the inspiration for our libretto.
