THE CRIER © Ill. Sir David Heizer, Potentate Official Publication of Antioch Shrine • www.antiochshrine.com VOL. 116, NO. 3 MARCH 2016 Page 2 From the Potentate Ill. Sir Dave Heizer HOW SWEET IT IS Thanks to everyone for a very successful 2016 Antioch Shrine Circus. The weather was fantastic, the crowds amazing and a very professional display of our Nobles and their Ladies in assisting and entertaining our patrons. We also were supported by the Elissa Guild, Rainbow Girls, Daughters of the Nile, and of course PP Jeff Shaw and his group of Brothers that manage our parking for the event. Also a special thanks to the Nobles that helped set up and tear down all of our props for the Circus. I could not have survived the weekend without the help of Marshall Todd Rider, Potes Staff member Jim Hodde and Noble Ed Harm..these guys ran the steps for me all weekend and helped resolve many minor hiccups. This was perhaps the best run Circus in modern Antioch history. I am seeing the continued strong momentum in Antioch and the participation at our events ANTIOCH CRIER is evidence to that. Record attendance at the Installation of Officers and the OG Roast, creating already almost 20 new Nobles, and the restoration of 3 members. The fun has just begun. Our annual Childrens Easter Party and Bunny Breakfast sponsored by the Elissa Guild is March 19th, and Antioch will be serving a Monthly Saturday Breakfast for selective dates starting March 26th,April 23rd,and May 28th to start. Continuing into April we will be having our Antioch X Games on the 16th with fun, food and excitement. This is advance notice to participating clubs and units in the Games...Your fabulous world class Divan is fielding a team to “Kick your Butt” and take the Trophy back!!! And of course the red carpet “Diamonds and Pearls” Potentate’s Ball, a black tie affair to impress event with seating limited to 120 couples [240 people] is April 30th so reserve your tickets early. Please see the Crier ads for the various events. Myself and Lady Linda will be happy to attend any events of your choosing. Simply call me or the Antioch office to schedule our attendance. We will of course be visiting all the Clubs and Units throughout the year and look forward to seeing everyone. God Bless America and God Bless Antioch Shrine March 2016 Editors Note to Clubs & Units I will keep this space for your reports, the space is 1/6 of a page. At the Editors discretion I can or will change space allocation when available. Some Clubs or Units do not have large space requirements. I will give first preference to earliest submission for the remaining space. However the small submission will always be at the top of the column. This is not an encouragement to have larger columns, I have a sharp pencil and will cut columns down when needed. Deadline is the 10th of the month. All articles for the April Crier must be submitted by March 10th. We have 4 buggies ready to sell either for parades or pleasure. They are in top condition and reasonably priced. Call Dave Caldwell at 513594-2613 for further info. Years ago Stan Gessaman wrote “the thrill of a Shrine Parade is without equal and the best way to enjoy it is to be in it.” The 2016 circus is now history and what a time it was! The weather was beautiful and the people came out in support of Antioch. It takes a lot of nobles voluntering their time to make the circus what it is. A blast from the past: Kermit sez, it’s in the 80’s in Margaritaville but he may be persuaded to come to Tampa along with Bubba, Herman and Curious George to the Imperial. Stay tuned for further reports... PROVOST GUARD By Noble Tom Hail Last month we had installation with our slate of officers; Chief Roger DeLong, Assistant Chief Charles Fearing and Secretary/Treasurer Tom Hail. The dinner meeting with our Ladies was held at T.J. Chumps in Fairborn. It will be our monthly meeting restaurant now as Roush’s in Fairborn has closed. The guest speaker for the evening was Matt McFarland, Floor Manager at UD Arena for the Shrine Circus. Mr. McFarland filled our unit in on the behind-the-scenes details we needed to insure a smooth running and safe Circus for the public (especially the children). His insight into the preshow, intermission and after show “floor planning” paid off well as all shows were incident free. We were honored to have Chief Rabban Wes Ramsey’s Lady Johanna in attendance to share his comments. Remember your Blue Lodge and the men and women serving our country to keep us free. ANTIOCH CRIER Kentucky Colonels By Col. Jim Thorpe, President Thanks to all the Colonels for helping to make the Shrine Circus a success. The elephant rides went smoothly because of you. We all should attend functions at our Shrine Center as much as possible. Such as Friday Nite Bites, Fish Fries, Etc. Colonels, if you are not receiving notices about our meetings or functions please contact our Director Joe Thorpe at 513-300-2823 or yours truly at 937-321-5068 with your contact information. We enjoyed great attendance at “Mutts” for our February meeting. Our 2016 officers were installed by Assistant Rabban Bret Stahler. Thank you Bret! March 2016 Parade Escort By Noble Bruce Adamson, VP I sure hope Punxsutawney Phil is correct and we get an early Spring. We are all anxious to ride; but he is a ground hog and his predictions are only correct about 30% of the time. I won’t be holding my breath waiting on warm weather. Have you looked at the parade schedule? The parades start with Miamisburg on May 21st. Being in a parade unit is an easy and fun way to spread the word about Shriners and all we do for the kids. Antioch Patrol By Ivan Clark Director Emeritus ANTIOCH GUN CLUB By Noble Tom Hail Our club members have requested some updates for our gatherings. One is to have more precision shooting events requiring a higher skill level instead of just a luck style shoot. This would involve more bullseye shooting at further distances. Another is when we meet at Vandalia Range & Armory every other month (paired with Antioch the other) we should take advantage of Noble Doug Hague’s business and have an “informal shoot” time prior to the 7:00pm meeting. This would allow members and their Ladies to bring their personal handguns and “plink” a little prior to the gathering. Before we had only designated shoots (i.e. Poker Shoot, Turkey Shoot, Annie Oakley Shoot, etc.) and just met at the range for a meeting the other times. Also, we have decided our very hard working Annie Oakleys deserve the member’s compensation for refreshments the Ladies surprise us with every time we meet. We will designate a Donation Jar to off-set their expense. March’s meeting is at 7:00pm on Wednesday the 20th at Vandalia Range & Armory. At our February meeting we installed officers for the coming year. Our installing officer was Chaplin Ed Fox, who is also our Divan Representative, and Patrol member. Officers duly installed for the year are: Director, Ron Rhoades, President, Sam Tindall. First Vice President, Bob Six. SecretaryTreasurer, Benny Ulmer. A short meeting followed, normal stuff, minutes, treasurer’s report, new and old business etc. Director Ron talked about staffing at the Shrine Circus to take tickets, looks like all was covered. Taking care of our E-Wheels batteries during the off season is a concern to make sure we are ready for the parade season. Fun, food, and fellowship followed after a short meeting and installation of officers. We ask our members to support the functions at the Shrine Center lots of things happening, be there! We are always looking for new members to join our unit and have fun riding our new E-Wheels, they are a crowd-pleaser! As always, we send our thoughts and prayers to all those patrolmen and their family members who are having health problems. March 2016 Brass Band By Noble Doug Hayes The Brass Band had a great turnout for all three of our performances at this year’s Circus. Everyone had a good time providing musical entertainment before the show. A big thank you to all the musicians who played with us and helped us provide a wonderful performance. The Brass Band also provided musical entertainment for the Potentate’s Lenten Fish Fry, with another good turnout and fun had by all. Remember, we are always looking for new members; so if you, or anyone you know plays a musical instrument, please come join us every Tuesday at 7:30 PM in the basement of the Shrine Center. Legion of Honor By Noble Louis Caston, Chaplain Greetings Nobles: Thanks to all that came out to work the Circus! Your Legion of Honor was honored to post colors for all performances again this year. The Divan and all Nobles from all Clubs and Units continue to make the Circus a great success for Antioch. We have a busy year ahead for Antioch and hope that you will be able to come out to some events. If you are a member of the Legion of Honor and are unable to get out because of health reasons please contact me at Louis.caston@gmail. com so that we can add you to our prayer list. “ Set your course by the stars, not by every passing ship ”, Omar N Bradley THE ANTIOCH LEGION OF HONOR WANTS YOU! Membership is limited to Nobles that are serving or have been Honorably discharged from the Armed Forces of their country. ANTIOCH CRIER Antioch Travelers Camping Club By Max Richardson, President Hello Campers Well, the Antioch Circus is behind us and that means camping season is right around the corner. I would like to offer a genuine THANK YOU to all nobles and their ladies who worked tirelessly to make the Antioch Circus another great success. All of you are outstanding and are certainly appreciated. Just a few more weeks and we can dust off our camping equipment and once again enjoy the great outdoors and quality time with our camping family. For anyone who is not yet a Traveler, you have no idea what you are missing. Sitting around the campfire visiting, joint meals with the group, camp fire cooking instructions and guidance by Chuck Pinney and Charlie Weaver and lots more. Heck we don’t care if you don’t have a tent and want to sleep under the stars. What we DO care about is having those who enjoy camping and being with great people join us for continued fun and enjoyment of fresh air, nature and unity among fellow campers. Annual dues are only $30 and that also covers your partner so why not give us a try? Contact Max Richardson @ 937-668-4107 or Charlie @ 937-671-1208. Please join our NEW FACEBOOK PAGE! Page 5 Azizah temple D of N By Princess Chaplain, Dees Thompson The warning “Beware the Ides of March” has been attributed to Julius Caesar, after he was stabbed 23 times by mutinous Roman senators. Whether or not Caesar, or anyone else besides Shakespeare, actually said it, this phrase has been carried down to us for centuries. Our March session is on March 17, two days after the Ides of March. This is a big day for our temple because it is not only the election of officers but also the installation of those newly elected and appointed officers. Try to come. It means a lot for the new queen to see the ladies of the household supporting her. Set your spring calendar to include Azizah Temple every third Thursday at 1:00 p.m. You’ll be glad you came. Queen Dayna and her corps of officers thank all who attended sessions, worked behind the scenes, contributed goods or money, and in any other way contributed to the life of Azizah Temple this past year. More members are needed to continue with our work. Know anyone? IMPORTANT: Our April session will be on the 7th, not on the 21st, due to a change in availability of space in Antioch Shrine Center. Remember, April 7! Remember to call Dees, 297-4044, with the name of anyone who needs a card because of illness or other distress. DATES: March 17 Stated Session, 1:00 Election of Officers Installation of Officers April 7 Stated Session,1:00 NOTE CHANGE REMEMBER: Believe you can and you are halfway there. Teddy Roosevelt Page 6 Miami County SHRINE CLUB By Noble Bruce Adamson, President Miami County Shrine I survived being installed as President of the Miami County Shrine Club and managed to make it through the first meeting. We welcomed Paul Brigitzer and Lady Allison to our January meeting. Our meeting calendar is set and we are looking forward to a great meal at the American Legion in Tipp City for our March Meeting. I was glad to see quite a few of our Nobles at the Shrine Circus on Feb 6th to work. It was a great circus and I know the kids of all ages that came had a great time. MOTOR CORPS By Noble Pete Boyd The Circus is over and what a great one it was. The attendance looked great and we all in the Corps had a great time. Nobles Bull and Buzard did a fine job running the Oasis under the leadership and supervision of Lady Joyce. Great job, well done guys !! The New Oriental Guide, Noble Paul Brigitzer has been appointed as the Motor Corps representative and Noble Dave Sweeney has replaced Noble Paul Weglage and is in charge of insuring all Nobles participating in parades have vehicle insurance and have complete registration with Antioch as required. All Nobles Take Notice. During our February Meeting, the Motor Corps elected two new members to our Unit. Michael Lane is well known to most of us since he has been a member and is transferring in from the Motor Escort. The other is Noble Dan Loumnah who is new to the Antioch Shrine having been initiated last fall. Welcome aboard guys. Now on to the parade season. Remember we have only a little over two months to get our machines ready for the first parade in May at Miamisburg. ANTIOCH CRIER Antioch Greeters By Mike Phillips, Secretary March already!!! Snowbirds are coming home. It’s time for us to get those gardens tilled and ready for the potato planting come St. Pat’s Day. Several of the Greeters will have to have others do their planting as they will be enjoying the Pote’s Caribbean Cruise. February saw another successful circus. Congratulations to Past Potentate Sweeny for a job well done. Greeters manned their usual posts selling programs. Our thanks to those involved in the restoration of the building and we encourage all to support Lady Linda’s project of redoing the 2nd floor ladies lounge. Hope you all had a Happy Easter in remembrance of why we celebrate the season. ANTIOCH SENIORS By Noble Ben H. Larick, President We had a good February with a good turn out at our regular weekly meetings on Tuesday mornings. Antioch Seniors is committed to having a good time by being a social group. We welcome the ladies to join us on the second Tuesday for our breakfast meeting. Our Speaker this month will be Jim Charters, Historian, topic Dayton Inventions. We had a wonderful time at the Antioch Circus. The turnout for the first 3 shows was good and the 4th show was a little slow. If you missed the Circus you missed a great time. The Hog Show in my opinion took the show. Remember we are always looking for NEW MEMBERS so come on down and join us. We meet any time from 8:00am on for fellowship. Until next month we hope to see you and remember we work for our children, March 2016 Mounted Patrol By Noble Todd Rider Antioch Marshall March 3. the Mounted Patrol will meet at Brixx’s at 7:00 pm. Please come and join us, if you are interested. Your ladies and family are welcomed. We will be talking about the upcoming parade season. Happy trails. CLASSIC CAR CLUB By Jim Matthews, Director The Classic Cars are off to a fast start this year. We had our first meeting last month and would like to welcome First Ceremonial Master, Todd Pultz as our Divan representative for this year. The officers of our Unit for 2016 are: President, Jackie Butler, Vice President Jim Smart, Treasurer, Tom Lees, and Secretary Harold Bourghton. The Circus has come and gone again for another year. I would like to thank all of our members and their Ladies who helped usher, donated tickets for, or did other things to support this year’s Circus. Discussion has begun regarding this year’s car show which will be held on Sunday August 28th. As in past years the help provided by other Units, Clubs, and Nobles is what makes this show an all in composing even for Antioch Shrine. We are constantly seeking new ideas to improve the show – one, which was discussed at our meeting, is to add a vendors “row” or area where Shriners or others who have car related businesses and wish to help sponsor our show may be able to set up a display booth. Although not completely finalized, this as well as other new ideas will be discussed again at our next meeting. As always we are looking for new members. If you are interested in joining our Unit, please contact one of the officers. March 2016 ANTIOCH CRIER Page 7 Greetings from the First Lady As February comes to a close, I’d like to thank all of you that made our 2016 Circus another great success. Your camaraderie and love for Antioch shines through despite the many challenges running a circus can bring. It was also wonderful to see a great turnout for the Potentate’s Lenten Fish Fry that raised money for our units to head to Tampa this July for the “Welcome Home” to Tampa Imperial. There’s nothing better than a Fish Fry to bring people together. Good Times!! I’m also excited to report that the painting of our Ladies Upstairs Lounge is complete. We have updated our Gold Mirror to White. Currently we are looking to replace the furniture and the blinds to finish its new look. Talk about a change!! It’s amazing what a little paint can do. Also Ladies we are getting new bathroom stalls and countertop as well. So keep looking for progress reports in the near future. On Monday, April 11th, is the next Stated Meeting for the men. While they are conducting business, we will have a Dance Instructor teaching the ladies line dancing in the lower level. Come to participate or just come to watch. Either way it will be fun. Cash Bar available. This event is complimentary for the Ladies. Monday, April 25th, while the men are attending their leadership meeting, the” Ladies sewing for kids” will pick up once again to make blankets for our hospitals. Please join us at the Temple at 6:30 for sewing and fun with a purpose. Remember Ladies you don’t have to be able to sew. There are lots of ways to help out with this project. Light snacks and drinks provided. Looking forward to seeing you there. On Saturday, April 30th is the “Diamonds and Pearls” Potentate’s Ball at the Marriott at the University of Dayton. Cocktails start at 5:00 followed by dinner and live music by This Side Up along with a few surprises. Check the Flier in this month’s Crier for more details.
