Annual Report - Angel Foundation for Learning
Annual Report 2012-13 Our Mission The Angel Foundation for Learning is a charitable organization that serves the needs of students in the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB). Through the generosity and compassion of donors, we support students by nurturing their body, mind and soul through nutritional, educational and recreational programs. Our Vision As an official charity of the TCDSB, our mandate is to support our children’s education, with an emphasis on social justice. It is a sad fact that many of Toronto’s students live below the poverty line. Through essential nutritional, educational, social and emergency support programs, we work to give every student an equal opportunity to succeed. If children arrive at school hungry, they are not able to learn. If children arrive at school without proper attire, without needed eyeglasses or lacking medical needs, they are not able to learn. If children are deprived of attending a class excursion because of financial issues, they miss a learning opportunity. If students are not able to pursue their education due to financial issues, they are not able to break that cycle of poverty. Educate - Inspire - Support - Nurture We have addressed these social justice issues each school day for over 25 years. The Angel Foundation for Learning will continue to educate, inspire, support and nurture students within the TCDSB through our four Wings of Support: Student Nutrition Programs, School Allocation Funds, Guardian Angel Funds, and Bursaries and Awards. We need to be angels for each other, to give each other strength and consolation. Because only when we fully realize that the cup of life is not only a cup of sorrow but also a cup of joy will we be able to drink it. - Henri Nouwen (1932-1996); Catholic Priest, Author 2 It is an honour and a privilege to be the President and Chair of the Board of Directors of the Angel Foundation for Learning. The last few years have given me the opportunity to meet and work with many compassionate and generous people who give their time as volunteers and supporters of The Angel Foundation for Learning. This Annual Report attests to the considerable growth that The Angel Foundation for Learning has experienced during the 2012-13 period and clearly indicates how the bulk of our funds is directly streamed towards meeting the needs of our students through our four wings of support: Student Nutrition Programs, School Allocations, Guardian Angel Funds, and Awards and Bursaries. The Angel Foundation for Learning has provided financial assistance to over 40,000 student in the TCDSB and has disbursed over $2,000,000 through our four wings of support. In the coming year, we will continue to focus on new and innovative strategies to raise funds to meet the ongoing needs of our student community. Our Mission statement has always been to serve the needs of TCDSB students and this Annual Report is indicative that we are meeting our mission thanks to the generosity of our corporate and private donors. Going forward, there is still much work to be done and our staff, volunteers and Board of Directors will strive for continued growth and the sustainability of all our programs. In the course of reading this Annual Report, if you have suggestions or new ideas, we would love to hear from you. The Angel Foundation for Learning is for OUR community and values any input that will assist us in meeting our goals for the future. Nancy Murdocca, MSW RSW President The Angel Foundation for Learning 3 Student Nutrition Programs Each day, approximately 30,000 TCDSB students in 109 schools rely on one of 132 Student Nutrition Programs to receive a healthy breakfast, lunch or snack. One in three TCDSB students participate in a morning meal program five days a week. Students who have had a healthy and nutritious morning meal are ready to learn and have improved attention spans. Municipal and provincial government grants account for a portion of the costs associated with running our Nutrition Programs, while the remaining costs are covered through fundraising initiatives, parent donations and local community sponsorships. Breakfast Clubs of Canada and Breakfast for Learning also provide support for some of our programs. To those who suffer, God does not provide arguments which explain everything; rather, his response is that of an accompanying presence, a history of goodness which touches every story of suffering and opens up a ray of light. - Pope Francis "Lumen Fidei," June 29, 2013 Board of Directors 2012-13 Maria Chiaravalloti (Honorary Secretary) Frank D’Amico George Dzuro Colette Frith Liz Gabbott Angela Gauthier Carmen Giambattista (Treasurer) Carmela Giardini (Vice President) Geoff Grant Bianka Hudec Tomasz Kryzanowski Julie Mazzuca-Peter Nancy Murdocca (President) Odilia Pariselli Sabrina Paganelli Barbara Poplawski Diana Riopel (Past President) Marla Teper Charles Tonna Daniela Venturin Andrew Walker Art Witham Staff Marisa Celenza - Executive Director Joanne Benvenuti - Student Nutrition Program Manager (Secondary Programs) Manuela Caputo - Office Manager Stephanie Caruso - Partnerships, Marketing and Communications Manager Jessica Colucci - Partnerships, Fundraising & Special Events Manager Tina Giustizia - Student Nutrition Program Manager (Elementary Programs) Jennifer Tocci - Clerical Assistant (as of February, 2013) Contact Us 80 Sheppard Avenue East, Toronto, ON M2N 6E8 Phone: 416.222.8282 ext. 2195 | Email: [email protected] www.angelfoundationforlearning.org @AFLToronto Channel: TheAngelFoundation4L Angel Foundation for Learning Registered charity #10807-5946-RR0002 12 The Angel Foundation for Learning
