Our condolences go to the family and friends of Roy. Well, what do you know, here I am, coming up on 50 years old and having been a member of Plymouth Motor Club since the youthful age of 16 years of young Ive risen to the dizzy heights of being the Chairman of the oldest motor club in the southwest of England. During the recent AGM it was proposed and accepted that I become chairman, if you weren’t there then don’t complain, you could have stopped me there and then. At this point some sort of evil laugh that a Bond villain would do as he takes over the world is appropriate, but very hard to put in to words. Ill settle with Ha Ha. We’re not that far from being the oldest club in the UK I believe, pipped at the post by the Midland Automobile Club who set out their stall in 1901 at Shelsley Walsh Hillclimb, a long standing British institution. Most of you know me from the various disciplines ive been involved with over the years, hopefully my experience as both an organiser and a competitor will assist me with continuing the good works of James Ellison who has stood in for the last year as actining Chariman, I would like to pass my personal and indeed the committees thanks to James for his work not only in the last 12 months but in previous years as well. Becoming the chairman and to be at the head of such a club as PMC with its rich and varied history across the years, is indeed an honour and a privilege (this is starting to read like an acceptance speech from the Oscars, worry not, I wont cry) and at a time when technology and legislation is ever changing and our sport has to adapt to follow these changes, simple things like online entry systems and data logging, advances in automotive engineering, websites and social media, we also have safety which has come under the focus in recent years and will be the biggest change to April 2016 www.plymouthmotorclub.co.uk Page 5 our sport for the future, all of these things are brought about by a need, a desire, a want to keep up with the rest of the world. Needless to say that we, as a club, will continue to ensure that we are a club primarily for the membership at all times. Plymouth Motor Club isn’t about me, or you, its about us. Whilst we have to adapt to the changes, we must continue with our core ethos of putting the people first. So, being the chairman I thought I had better look up what my responsibilities are, its not just a question of a sneaky pint at a committee meeting once a month as a quick google search showed a few things, so I set the parental guidance rules a bit tighter on my internet search and searched again, and this time it actually came up with what I was after rather than men tied to chairs being flogged with a horse hair whip. I was in shock I can tell you. Google tells me in a roundabout way that the role of a chairman is to ensure that the committee is effective in its tasks of setting Spotlamp is published on the 3rd Friday of each month (hopefully!). Copyright Plymouth Motor Club 2016© Page 6 www.plymouthmotorclub.co.uk April 2016 and implementing the clubs direction and strategy. The chairman is appointed by the committee based on either experience, or in this case availability, as I was the only volunteer, yes, I volunteered. A Chairman is expected to act as the club’s leading representative which will involve the presentation of the company’s aims and policies to the outside world; in our case the membership and the general public, who, in the ideal world, we want to be members of PMC in the future. Another important role for the chairman is that during committee meetings etc they should direct discussions towards the emergence of a consensus view and sum up discussions so that everyone understands what has been agreed, basically, get everyone singing from an agreed song sheet towards achieving great things for the club, the committee in general exists for that reason, to ensure that the resources that we have, the events that we run, are all for the best of Plymouth Motor Club. The various roles of the committee all bundle together to ensure that everything that we do is towards a greater good, we are a team that has one goal, and that is to take Plymouth Motor Club forwards through to the next 100 years, I believe that we are now in our 108th year as a motor club, a lot has changed in that time, the motor car has universally become one of the most important inventions we have seen, PMC were formed in the year that Henry Ford announced the model T, in 1908 there were in the region of 80,000 cars on the road in the UK, current statistics from the DVLA show that there are in the region of 35 million registered vehicles on the road. Hence use of the motor car and subsequently motorsport as a social event has become popular with the masses, the great unwashed so to speak. There was a time when only the very rich could afford to race their automobile, Plymouth Motor Club has strived over recent years to ensure that there are grass roots car events for the many rather than the few, to compete in your standard road car and to have fun, it is after all a hobby, and hobbies should be fun. We have members with everything from fully fledged WRC rally cars that can compete at the highest level, to those that compete in their everyday drive to work cars. This is the essence of every car club in the UK, we try and cater for all levels but ensure that those with a April 2016 www.plymouthmotorclub.co.uk Page 7 tight budget, with no room to store a weekend car, or minimal talent or ability, we want these people to enjoy being members of Plymouth Motor Club as much as those competing at the top flight of our sport. Each and every member is important to us, and we want to run events that tick the boxes for everyone concerned. A club by the people and for the people. Im sure some famous American has already used that expression before when forming the united states, piffle, Ill still use it as a great description of what we are and what we exist for. One of my goals for the year is to try and make us more available to the public, Plymouth and the outlying areas is full of petrol heads, many of which don’t know that car clubs such as ours exist, let alone the MSA and the competition licencing scenario. I have no doubt that they strive to compete at different events, we just have to make these events through our club accessible to them in some way, so my focus will be on looking at ways and means of spreading the word of Plymouth Motor Club around the various groups that sit night after night and talk of engines and wheels and dare deeds done. Lets take the local Fast and Furious and show them what organised events can offer, what experience other club members can give them in the way of guidance and advice. We are a valuable resource to them if they know we exisit, lets put ourselves out there for the public to see. In the same way, if you kn ow of any clubs, colleges or associations that may find Plymouth Motor Club of an interest to them, then let me know, Ill happily talk to them over what we do and how local motorsport works. Lord Alf Chanter (ish) Chairman (and Editor) Page 8 www.plymouthmotorclub.co.uk April 2016 Werrington Park International PR work As a club we actively support new members and are always on the lookout for influential people to join us, we took the plunge and sent our very own Wayne Grimshaw first class to Dubai to see what interest he could rustle up, it seems he came back empty handed while he was out there but did his very best for us, it’s a tough life but someone has to do it. April 2016 www.plymouthmotorclub.co.uk Page 9 Page 10 www.plymouthmotorclub.co.uk April 2016 Dynamometer April 2016 www.plymouthmotorclub.co.uk Page 11 Competitions update – April 2016 What can I say, the months of planning have finally come to fruition and Werrington is up and running. As I write this, entries are almost full on both days, everything is in place, all we need is your help over the weekend (and the day before!) and everything will be “sorted”. I’ve even been to see Rev Ken (not to be confused with our own “Revvin Kevin”), the local vicar, and he tells me that, even though he’s off sick at the moment, he’s had a quiet word and sunshine is guaranteed this year. Our new online entries system nearly couldn’t cope with the demands placed on it but, thanks to Chris Pearce and Jason, we overcame the teething troubles and have taken 60% of our entries this way. In my view it’s the way forward for our larger events with quicker & better acknowledgements, an online viewable entry list showing entry status (available next year due to the aforementioned teething troubles!) and easier event management for the organising team – what’s not to like? In response to competitor comments – read complaints! - we are having the top paddock resurfaced before this year’s event. It’s been three years in the planning but hopefully will be worth it to quell the rising tide of disgruntled drivers. The one “new for 2016” that I would like to say in my next, post event, magazine article would be that we had some new faces at our Friday setup day on 29th April. It’s not going to happen I know but, if you fancy a day out in the sunshine at my country estate in North Cornwall, set your sat nav to PL15 9SR and be there for 09:00. Lunch and good company provided free of charge! The team and I will be mightily glad to see you. If you can’t make it on the 29th, Jay will be pleased to welcome you to help marshal the hill over the weekend. For those that come out on Saturday there’s a free barbeque after the end of hostilities, sorry, competition and on Sunday we’ll take you down the pub if you stay to help pack everything away. This doesn’t take too long, a couple of hours normally, and then we’ll let you have a day of rest on the next day as it’s a Bank Holiday JJJ As if… More news next month. Peter Locke Page 12 www.plymouthmotorclub.co.uk April 2016 The Barton Cup Rally The second round of the KM Joinery PMC 12 car rally series for 2016 takes in map 201 and is organised by Tess Salvage and Darren Stevens and starts from the workshops of AC Haines Engineering up at 7.30— 8pm, with MTC1 for car 1 being at 8.31. All plotting is done after your start time, with the first car hitting the lanes at 10.01pm, suitable for novices and experts alike. Contact Alf Chanter as noted in the front of this magazine for entries etc April 2016 www.plymouthmotorclub.co.uk Page 13 Page 14 www.plymouthmotorclub.co.uk April 2016 Chief marshals mutterings Oooh this has sprung up on me this month! Apologies for a rather shorter version this month, knee deep in safety manuals, set up manuals and loads of paperwork! What’s been happening since the last instalment I hear you cry (well I might be a little optimistic on that one!) Well beginning of March saw the Bovington Stages, a very fast event with some fantastic machinery! Congrats to Steve and Yvonne Furzeland on the win. Although not to far behind was Kevin Tappin and Jamie Vaughan whose Mk2 Escort was only 7-8 seconds behind the Furzelands for most of Sunday. Entertainment value went to the Army Rally Challenge who had quite a few Land Rovers entered. Their top speed must only be 70 or 80 mph but they kept that speed consistent regardless of corners, chicanes or stage furniture! A great two day event! Sunday 20th March there was a marshals training day at Wiscombe. A good days training and a fantastic turnout, there was even a reserve list for spaces! Well done to all that attended and just to go one better we burnt two cars this year! (Fire training I hasten to add!!). Right then: 30th April and 1st of May = Werrington Hillclimb just outside Launceston. We need marshals to help run the hill also we’re looking for volunteers to help set up on the Friday and help pack up on the Sunday evening. If you help in anyway I’d love to hear from you. I can be reached on 07867 860984 or email [email protected] Still pushing this! “January saw the launch of the MSA’s on line training modules, compulsory for NEW marshal registrations (or as it’s now called “accredited”), existing accredited marshals have until 1st Jan 2017 to take the 3 modules. It does not affect your grading. I took it and is very simple and not time consuming ( I think 15 mins to do all 3!)All the details as available from the MSA website www.msauk.org or give me a shout and I’ll try to answer your enquiry. At the same time as this launch the “conduct requirements” for want of a better phrase was put into writing. Most importantly, from 2017 although it may become practice this year, non accredited marshals will not be allowed to marshal a post without an accredited marshal being on the same post. Obviously this will impact personnel deployment on events. The good news is now you can apply direct to the MSA to be an accredited marshal without the need of a motor club endorsement (it will still be needed for upgrading etc though) so get accredited now!!! The other major one is that marshals will not take photos unless directed to do so by a senior official following an incident. This will be seen by some as quite a controversial one, however, as safety requirements have been April 2016 www.plymouthmotorclub.co.uk Page 15 “up-ed” it is expected that marshals are concentrating on their job and not getting close up pictures. I will urge you to abide by this please.” Any questions or info needed drop me a line and I’ll see what I can do to answer it! Stay safe, Jay Brown Social Report Hi All, April’s social evening will be held on Friday the 1st at The Union Inn, Plympton. Have a think beforehand everyone as want to look ahead at some events. Pool, darts, bowling ect . In addition to the social we will be starting a quiz championship in May .So start hitting those general knowledge books because it won’t all be rally questions or multiple choice. Have a great Easter an see you all at the social. Liz (pmc social secretary) Page 16 www.plymouthmotorclub.co.uk April 2016 Blandford march March Slalom A chance viewing of the Bournemouth Club website about something else, and I saw on the calendar The March Slalom, and Plymouth MC was an invited club and as I am a member of Plymouth and Truro my entry was put in. A quick email to Aaron, and my entry was sorted , it’s a few years since I had been to an event at Blandford. The only possible hiccup was that I was competing near Dorchester the previous weekend in the Golden Springs Trial organised by Woolbridge MC which was a round of the MSA NATIONAL , BTRDA and ASWMC Trials Championships , I let Aaron know that I would let him know if the car survived the Trial , which thankfully it did taking a Class Win and 5th Overall on Index of Performance . A bright start to the day , dry but a bit chilly and a good entry of 19 cars assembled . Its often how a route map is drawn that can actually make it look more complicated than it actually is too drive ? That’s just how it seemed on this occasion. The space available at Blandford Army Camp is fantastic , enough room to have 3 sections laid out with two runs at each and a total of 9 sections to be driven during the day. A good mix of cars in three classes , from Mini 1275GT , Corsa Saxo MX5 Clio and a Mk1 and Mk2 Escort , the classes split at 1300 , 1600 and 2000 , so the Nova was in unknown territory as its usually in the small capacity class After the first 3 tests having been driven twice each , it was very close , Edward Hoare in a Clio in Class 3 , the biggest engine capacity class was leading overall on 257.69 , from me in my Nova SR in Class 2 on 258.09 , Richard Bailey was leading the small engine class with 277.49. My car now supported by THE DEVONPORT ROYAL DOCKYARD EMPLOYEE TRUST an organisation that supports sports men and women in and around Plymouth in all areas of sport. Twelve more sections would be driven and the dry ideal conditions were very welcome after a miserable wet winter. The surface of the driving area is very abrasive and a number of cars were having to change tyres frequently. Aaron was kept busy compiling the results and after each set of three tests , he printed off interim results , so everyone knew what was happening . After the next batch of runs , I was well pleased to of moved ahead of Edward in his Clio , with a time of 502.13 from his 508.64 , Richard was still ahead in Class 1 on 525.17 with Steve Candy in his Mk1 Escort was on 527.97 in Class 2 and Michael Stewart was 2nd in Class 3 in his Mk2 Escort on 519.42 April 2016 www.plymouthmotorclub.co.uk Page 17 Not too much separating the cars , a hit cone or wrong test would certainly make a big difference. I completed the final batch of tests correctly , concentrating on driving them correctly rather than risking a wrong test or hitting a cone , and it paid off , Aaron soon had the results printed and I was really pleased that my trusty Nova SR had not only won the class but also taken FTD. The round trip of over 200 miles was well worth it My time at the end was 785.28 to take FTD , with Edward in his Clio taking Class 3 on 803.35 and Michael Stewart in his Mk2 Escort 2nd on 814.09 , Richard Bailey took the honours in Class 1 on 818.08 from Colin Stewart 2nd in his Corsa on 900.46 , in Class 2 Steve Candy in his Mk1 Escort took the award for 1st Class on 827.87 from Paul Coleman in his Puma . Can I say a big thank you to all the organising team who made this event happen , and to the marshals and timekeepers on the day without whom we the competitors would have no events , and for the warm welcome I had from everyone who seemed surprised I had driven from Plymouth to compete Regards And Thank you Wayne Grimshaw Young marshals out and about After receiving a marshals licence from the MSA I went straight out to The Bovington Stages to do some marshalling. A brilliant weekend, I ended up being with Alan Tomes on radio. Another step towards doing more within the motorsport world. As a trainee marshal I look to doing more and will try to get to more events this year (work permitting) if not I shall see most of you at Werrington Hillclimb. Stay safe out there guys and gals. Pinky, has become the devil incarnate, ish. There’s a point to this, or at least I hope there is, if not your going to waste 5 minutes of your life reading something pointless, so I assure you, there’s a point to it. 31 of them to be precise. Cast your mind back, yes, I know many of you cant remember your own phone number let alone something that happened in the past, but cast your mind back 12 months ago to last years April edition of Spotlamp, where I reported on the Bovington Stages 2015, and how Pinky, being Ben Parkers red Honda Civic stage car, expired. It had previously expired at Brean a few weeks before hand while Ben and myself were tackling the first round of the ASWMC sealed surface (tarmac) championship, Ben had breathed life in to it once more for the 2 nd round of the ASWMC series for the Bovington stages, only for poor old Pinky to expire once again. To be fair he expired whilst going well, and we were well inside the top 15 last year when another gearbox decided it didn’t like the rotary motion we required of it and threw its toys out of the pram. That as they say, was the end of that. After a fraught 2014, and a horrendous start to 2015, Pinky was retired to the garage for a year while various works were undertaken to make him in to a more reliable pinky. The Honda had been exemplary for the first 2 years, finishing 2nd overall and 4th overall consecutively in the ASWMC series, and then, as we started to go faster, as Ben drove it harder, as I read my map no more than I had ever done, the standard components of the Honda started to break, with engines and gearboxes letting us down during 2014 before failing at the early stages of 2015. April 2015 was the start of the rebuild, which as it turned out took until March 2016 to be completed, partially due to finance and partially due to availability of parts, we tried for Brean but didn’t make it, we even hopefully aimed for the regency at the end of 2015 which wasn’t even close, and to be fair, it was a last minute thing for Bovington, there was a point at which Ben probably hated the car as he was working on it up until the point at which it was loaded on a trailer and dragged of to Dorset. The thing to understand here is the human story of the amount of stress that Ben went through in the last few months of the build, and in particular the last few weeks, we had an intermittent but bad electrical fault probably relating to the loom on the engine throttle bodies which meant it wouldn’t run reliably, and with Brean being binned it was clear to Ben that a bespoke loom was the only way forward, and we had about 5 weeks to sort it out, you may think that 5 weeks is a long time but when your relying on specialist builders who are alApril 2016 www.plymouthmotorclub.co.uk Page 23 ready under pressure with schedules for the beginning of the motorsport season, Ben was more than grateful to Sandy Brown for organising a miracle and getting the loom done, at the same time we stole bits from the now defunct Peugeot 205 of Smasher Parker senior after the cars Brean final demise and took the ECU for Pinky as well, Ben finally had it on the rollers for setting up on the Thursday before Bovington, a few last minute hitches continued to niggle at Ben but everything was as good as it was going to get and on his arrival at the accommodation near to Bovington he was clearly stressed. I think he was stressed as they finished serving food at 9pm and Team Parker arrived at about 9.03pm so they missed food. For those of you who know Ben, he does get stressed sometimes, its one of his things, and it was clear until we sat in the car ready for stage 1, drove around the stage and got back to service, he wouldn’t relax. Tense is an understatement, and there was no way I was going to rub his shoulders for him. So there we were, 10.30am on the Saturday of a 2 day event, strapping ourselves in the car for the first time in 12 months, to be fair, I hadn’t lifted a finger pretty much during the rebuild, Ben had done it all assisted by various team members, there was a mix of pleasure, excitement, apprehension, flatulence, and to be fair relief that we were at the least about to start a rally, the car was as yet untested and we had no idea what the new dog box was like, how the gear ratios would work out, what the new brakes were like, how the engine would perform under load, basically, we had no idea, some would argue that’s normal for me however. As we left the service area to get our start time we both agreed that stage 1 was best attacked steadily, feel the car, feed the power in, test all aspects as we went around, a test lap if you will. A steady approach. We both thought it was a good idea. As our seconds ticked down we left the line and launched ourselves in to the stage, Ben is an exceptional driver I have to say, and the Honda is a very neutral car, it behaves impeccably and doesn’t tend to do anything scary, so leaving the line was like leaving the line on every other event we have competed on together, it felt normal, it felt precise, it felt good. The car pulled strong from its new 2000cc power plant, the gearbox selected gears almost like it was designed to do so, the first corner was a long open 45 right in to a bus top double aspect chicane on the left, we went through it smoothly, the stage continued in much the same way, we know the venue fairly well and there were no surprises, the car felt good, Ben looked like he was in control, and off course I was awesome on the maps. Part way around the stage we reached one of the faster areas and it was clear there were strong improvements from the car, with the speedo showing 120mph rather than its previous struggle at 100mph, the car was doing as it had always done, but faster. It certainly felt solid, well footed Page 24 www.plymouthmotorclub.co.uk April 2016 and dare we say it, normal. But faster. We noticed a vibration on right hand corners which initially felt quite bad, but once we got used to it, it wasn’t a problem, and the stage continued in the same way, safe, but fast, certainly faster than previous stages. No problems on the stage and we finished the stage with Ben fairly happy with the car, the initial stage had gone well, now was the time to up the game and see what it would do. As it turned out, we didn’t need to really, we were both very surprised to find that we were 11th overall after stage 1, a great run through the stage had shown us what it would be able to do and for stage 2 we now knew what was what and what we could target. The rest of the first day went well, the car and Ben did a grand job, we kept it clean, didn’t hit anything other than losing a mirror on the drivers side early on but other than that it was a case of watch the weather in case it changed, play with tyres and keep going. Day 1 saw us finish in 9th place overall and 3rd in the 2 litre class amongst the more established Escorts with their clicky boxes and Vauxhall engines, its fair to say the entire team were delighted with day 1, the car was superb and Ben hadn’t developed any rust himself over the last 12 months. Day 2 saw another fabulous day for weather, very cold but sunny, perfect conditions for the very fast stages that day 2 had for us, 6 more stages run almost in the opposite direction as day 1, but faster, possibly a better day for the big power boys and girls in their well developed cars. Whilst we had ooddles more power than we used to have, we still couldn’t compare with the established cars in our class on the power stakes, Class C for the really quick escorts and other 2 litre cars is always well contested and at a venue like Bovington they were very well suited, so we were relying on Pinkys light footed style to keep us in our position. The day went pretty much as day 1 had gone, Ben continued to be smooth and well focussed, whilst I looked at the trees and the scenery as I normally do, we continued with our pace actually getting up to 7th overall at one point due to mechanical issues for a couple of cars in front, before the power disadvantage crept in and a couple of cars who were chasing us yesterday managed to claw time back and pushed us back to 9thby lunch time. On the penultimate stage, we broke the exhaust on the launch from the start line just below the seats so it was more like a tank than a Honda, we were clearly down on power and had to drive to ensure that we didn’t lose the exhaust completely and force retirement, so we still had a fair bit of pace but dropped about 40 seconds and the WRC spec Subaru starting behind us (yes, it started behind the 20 year old Honda Civic) managed to catch us by the end of the stage, we knew it wasn’t a disaster as long as the exhaust could be repaired/botched and despite the dropped time our position in class and overall was secure as we had a good margin over the chaps behind April 2016 www.plymouthmotorclub.co.uk Page 25 us to the tune of about 90 seconds. At service our dedicated band of professional mechanics in the form of Gary Parker (Audiologist) Michael Rigby Jones (all round clever bloke) and Simon Heywood (Heating and plumbing) assisted by Ben on the jubilee clips managed to hang the system back together again in what was typically the shortest service we had all weekend. The result was a once again silent ish pinky, certainly good enough to finish the event with a little care. I just stood there wearing my helmet and FHR and said 10 minutes, 5 minutes, we need to go. Typically useful as always. The final stage is always a bit nervy on rallies, you have gone well all weekend and your always keen on a result, you know the exhaust is fixed on by things more normally found on a radiator hose but at the same time you want to go through the stage at a good pace, because that’s what rallies are all about, the ability to have a go. We launched from the line like a snail climbing forder valley, there was no way the exhaust was going to brake on the start line, thereafter once again it was service as normal but no risks being taken, we had our margin over the chaps behind in their state of the art Escort (6 speed sequential, big power Vauxhall engine, trick back axle etc etc) and we knew we couldn’t catch the 4wd turbo charged 300bhp Subaru in front of us with a Honda Civic, I mean that would just be embarrassing wouldn’t it. So no risks still took us to a splendid run through the stage in 10th fastest ensuring we took 9th overall and second in the 2 litre class, an absolutely fabulous result for a weekends rallying and one which I have to say credit is given to Ben for his efforts on the car and his ability behind the wheel. All in all, we can say with some satisfaction that Bovington 2016 was a brilliant event for team Pinky, a great event overall, the stages were superb, the weather was far better than we would ever have hoped for and Bournemouth and district car club should be congratulated on their running of another brilliant event. There were a good few crews running who were members of PMC, Steve and Yvonne Furzeland took the victors spoils for 2016 in their WRC Subaru with a great pace, a shining and well deserved result for Mark and Nic Clayton in the first dry event for their 1600cc Mini taking a fabulous 13th overall and 1st in class B, and Tom Goss navigating for Phil Ferguson in their 2lite Vauxhall Astra finishing in 41st overall in what I believe is Toms first stage event. Next for team Pinky is the Corinium Stages at the end of April, sadly clashing with Werrington meaning for the first time were going to miss Werrington HillPage 26 www.plymouthmotorclub.co.uk April 2016 climb for the first time in years as were having a good crack at the sealed surface stage rally series this year to see what the Honda can do with its new heart, with the TSH run down at Portreath in late May over my birthday weekend, in fact in something like a 7 week period we have 4 stage rallies, so a frantic and expensive time in our lives certainly. Se you all out there somewhere Ben Parker and Alf Chanter 9th overall and 2nd in the big boys class Bovington stages 2016. At speed on stage 10 on the way to a great top ten finish Pinkys new power plant sticks out a bit This is where the magic happens April 2016 www.plymouthmotorclub.co.uk Page 27 AUTOSOLO’S………….WHAT? Once again Plymouth Motor Club members are invited to compete at the Truro and District Motor Club events at Cornwall College Camborne , in 2015 they ran over ten events at the venue and 2016 will be no different. The first event of the year took place on the 17th January , the second planned for the 7th February and many more to follow throughout the year Any ROAD GOING car can compete , without any major modifications , one of the common failings at scrutineering being security of battery ! and unmarked earth , so you don’t need lots of car preparation. Autosolo is a mix of autotesting in so much that the course is set out using cones , and a mild sprint . More often than not its smooth driving that wins rather than exuberant antics and tyre smoke! The organising team are fortunate that they have two car parks to chose from , and tend to alternate between the two for the various events. All the details and entry forms are on the Truro and District Motor Club website Dates for 2016 17th April 2nd May 30th May 19th June 17th July 29th August 2nd October 23rd October 20th November 31st December Its well worth the trip down to Camborne Page 28 www.plymouthmotorclub.co.uk April 2016 Scatter Report First scatter of the season saw us gathering at the services in Saltash. From there we decided to head towards Liskeard, turning off the main road in the Notter area. This was our first evidence of flooding with the road surface full of potholes. We quickly found the first marker then headed towards Callington on the A3888, turning off just prior to St.Mellion. Our next marker was growing in the hedgerow (we later discovered this was incorrect) but moving on we located Chapel Farm where we could not find the marker. Wasting no more time we proceeded towards the A3888 taking in a slight detour around St.Dominic and returning to St.Mellion for our next marker found shortly after we turned off. Moving in a circular route around Pillaton we located a further 6 markers, also encountering other crews on route. Heading towards home we picked up one more marker before finishing at the Crooked Inn pub. Here we then had to amalgamate our letter collection into a series of words, not overly easy when most where K, U and Y! Six crews in all took part and we enjoyed our first scatter of the season, finishing a credible 2nd. Thank you to James and Fran for organising a nice route around Cornwall – pity we don’t get to see the views. April 2016 www.plymouthmotorclub.co.uk Page 29 The annual Werrington Park Vospers speed Hillclimb is almost upon us, with a fabulous full entry on both days over a month before the event, we were forced to close entries as this also included a host of reserves as well, so a brilliant response to one of the most popular Hillclimbs in the country, with entries coming from across the UK. As always it doesn't run its self and many hands make light work as they say, so we are looking for volunteers for the set up day on the Friday, and both days of racing to marshal the hill. For marshal enquiries please contact Jay Brown as per the front of this magazine. on 07867 860984 or email [email protected] . The weather is booked, as always the racing will be fabulous, come on out and see what the best Hillclimb in the south has to offer you all.
