Norway have a lot to celebrate in athletics
at the moment, not least Karoline Bjerkeli
Grøvdal being named the women’s European Athletics Rising Star presented by
MONDO for the 2009 season.
The 19-year-old middle-distance runner had a fantastic year on the
track, defending her 3000m steeplechase title and adding the 5000m
gold for a brilliant double at the European Athletics Junior Championships in Novi Sad, Serbia, in July. Grøvdal also set two Norwegian junior
records in 2009.
I am to present Grøvdal with her European Athletics Rising Star Award
at the European Athletics Awards Night in Budapest on Saturday 17
October alongside the men’s Rising Star winner Christophe Lemaître
and the European Athlete of the Year winners, Marta Domínguez and
Phillips Idowu.
Tens of thousands of votes were registered for both the European
Athlete of the Year and European Athletics Rising Star categories and
the final results were extremely close. The winners reflect the decisions made by several groups of people: fans, media, Member Federations and a panel of experts, with emotion and opinion making
people’s minds up as much as facts and figures.
Grøvdal’s award follows that of compatriot Andreas Thorkildsen,
named men’s European Athlete of the Year for 2008 for his Javelin
throwing feats. Thorkildsen, of course, followed up his Olympic triumph in 2009 by claiming the world title in Berlin in August.
With Thorkildsen and Grøvdal just two examples of a fantastic array
of Norwegian athletes making their mark in athletics it is the perfect
time for the country to host a high-profile athletics event – and this is
what Bergen will do next year with the staging of the SPAR European
Team Championships.
The city, of course, successfully hosted the European Team Championships 1st League in 2008 and now will host the second Super League
of the revamped team competition.
It is European Athletics’ goal to lead, inspire and equip the highest
number of Europeans to enable them to form a loyal relationship
with athletics for life. I am looking forward to the Local Organising
Committee, the city authorities and the cream of Norwegian athletics coming together next year to work with us to produce a fantastic
event in Bergen and help us in our mission.

Dear all Athletic friends!
It is a great honour to welcome you to
Norway and Bergen for the SPAR European Team Championships Super League.
The City of Bergen and Hordaland County
has long traditions in track and field and is
known for its very strong athletic milieu.
We feel confident that with their experienced staff this Championship
is in the best hands. Fana Stadium has proven to be at fast and good
track with previous world records, and we hope that a good track,
beautiful surroundings and an excited crowed will inspire the athletes
to great performances.
Besides Bislett Games this will be the biggest athletic event in Norway
this year and we really look forward to meet a lot of our European
friends and competitors on home soil. This is also a perfect opportunity for us to show the new and upcoming generation of Norwegian
athletes competing together in a team championship towards the
strongest athletic nations in Europe.
We look forward to an exciting competition with performances that
we hope will excite the audience and TV viewers and also give a
stronger momentum and excitement to the Team Championships.

We – the LOC and all the volunteers – are
pleased and honoured to welcome the
twelve best nations in Europe to Bergen and
SPAR European Team Championships Super
League. This is a new challenge for our
experi¬enced staff of nearly 400 volunteers.
They have experience from major events as Bergen Bislett Games in
2004, The Norwegian Championship in 2005 , Nordic Match U20 in
2008 and The European Team Championships First League in 2009 and
we are all eager to take on an even bigger challenge this time.
The excellent co-operation between European Athletics, Norwe¬gian
Athletics and the City of Bergen makes us confident that we will handle
the huge responsibility and trust we have received from European Athletics when they awarded SPAR European Team Championships Super
League to us.
We will do our utmost to make this a memorable and well-staged
Championship, and that the eyes of Europe are set on Bergen to see
who will be the best athletic nation in Europe in 2010. The Local organising committee and the City of Bergen will be well prepared and we hope
that a refurbished Fana Stadium will inspire the 600 athletes to perform
their best when defending the honour of their country. Our goal is that
the European Team Championships Super League will be a wonderful
start to the Norwegian midsummer festival just a few days later.

Organisational Structure
In the city of Bergen there is a great interest in sports, in many
different types. The teams from Bergen have done very well within
several different sports. Teams in volleyball, handball, basketball and
football are all among the top teams in their league. This year we also
got a World Champion from Bergen in the IAAF World Youth Championship in Bressanone, Italy
Now we are looking forward to SPAR ETCH Super League, hoping that
this event will bring Bergen new great moments in the field of sports.
I am sure that the people of the city will come to Fana in June 2010,
to see top athletes from all over Europe competing for the top prize.
Commanding the spectacular western edge of the Scandinavian
Peninsula, Bergen has been a focal point of cultural and commercial
activity from medieval to modern times. Its population of 252 000
proudly invites you to share the bustling maritime atmosphere, the
rich architectural heritage and the cultural and academic institutions
of their home city. Located in the heart of the famous fjords, Bergen
is also known as the Gateway to the Fjords.
We are certain that the city of Bergen would give the participants a
long lasting memory as and extended value; this includes the scenery,
the old Hanseatic quay and housing structure and the possibility of
using the fjords for part of your social activities.

Bergensers have an in-born love for their city and even newcomers
quickly fall under its spell. Where does this sense of magic come
from? Is it the atmosphere, the environment? Though there are
high-rise buildings, the impression of Bergen is of a charming city full
of small wooden houses. They scramble up the mountainsides and
compete for space with wealthy mansions, flaunting themselves all
the way into the city.
Clusters of old houses cling together in among the new quarters.
Bergensers take a keen interest in protecting their grass-root
traditions and building styles, and Bergen architecture is distinctive
yet diverse. Though Bergen has suffered many fires over the
centuries, it still has one of Europe’s largest conglomerates of
wooden houses.

Everything is not how Bergensers would like it. But a lot is like it was.

We Bergensers polish and paint as best we can, just as much to

It can be a party just to wander out and about in Bergen on a balmy
summer evening. The streets throng with people milling in and out of
cafés sampling food ranging from familiar fish dishes to fashionable
tapas; people sipping a glass of beer on the wharfside, or wine in a
wine cellar. During the day you can eat smoked salmon and fresh
shrimps on the busy Fish Market, while a true Bergenser will be
tucking into fish cakes and spicy ‘shilling buns’!
From fish cakes to festivals, and spring bursts into action are always
on their way to, or from, a party ‘shilling buns’ for Norway’s

A party in itself
largest cultural event - the annual Bergen International Festival. Out
of all of Norway, it had to be here because Bergen has such a festive
atmosphere. Edvard Grieg’s birthplace has all the right ingredients
of intimacy, charm and enthusiasm. Even so, weather experts were
consulted for the best time of the year. Bergensers have a thing
about the weather. But they don’t let things stop just because of a
drop of rain! The show must go on. And there are many shows, many
annual festivals - from Blues to Ballet, from Raves to Rachmaninov.
We Bergensers grasp any excuse for a festival. Nothing is too trivial.
We make a celebration out of anything - street entertainment,
theatre, all around the city, in shops, in parks - even over statues. And
if there is no particular anniversary, something else will be found to
celebrate!

Ever since the intrepid King Olav Kyrre sailed into the harbour and
founded the city in 1070, Bergen has attracted people from all
quarters of the world. Some came and went, others decided to
make Bergen their home. Bergensers travelled abroad and learned
and so Bergen became a melting-pot of cultures and Norway’s most
international city.
Bergen grew up around its colourful harbour - it was the hub of
commerce, seafaring and crafts-manship. We became the north’s
largest city, Norway’s first capital city and the seat of royalty. Bergen
was so important by the 13th century that the Hansas - the German
medieval guild of merchants - opened one of their four European
offices on the wharf called Bryggen. Some of the Hansas chose
to become Bergensers. And so have many others throughout the
centuries. But Bryggen stays the same, its contour just as it was in the
11th century, untouched by shifting times. It has become a symbol
of our cultural heritage and has gained a place on UNESCO’s World
Heritage List. Bergen has become a World Heritage City.

Fana Stadium
Fana Stadium
Fana Stadion is located 12 km south of Bergen city centre and 5 km
from Bergen Airport Flesland.
The stadium was completed in the summer of 1969 with rubber
asphalt, which was replaced with a tartan track in 1978. In 2004 the
track was upgraded with a new tartan track (polytan). In addition to
the outdoor track there is an indoor (tunnel) area, Høiehallen, which
consists of an 80 metres warm up track, and facilities for both long,
high and triple jump.
The original stand and administration building was
completed in 1991. The grandstand capacity has increased twice since then, first in connection with the
E-Cup in 1996 and more recently when Bergen hosted
the Bislett Games in 2004.
Many major events have been held at the stadium,
including Nordic Junior Matches, a number of Team
matches, and several Norwegian Athletic Championships.
A number of Norwegian records have been set at Fana Stadion,
and we can also boast about two former world records, one in 1991
by Trine Hattestad, Norway throwing the javelin 68.18 metres, and
the other by Elvan Abeylegesse, Turkey, running the 5000 metres in
14:24.68, back in 2004.

They will be accommodated in Clarion Hotel Admiral located in the
city centre, 10 km from the Fana Stadium
The official airport is the Bergen Airport Flesland located 15 km from
Bergen City centre, and 5 km from Fana Stadium.
There are several international connections directly to Bergen and
there are more than 20 connections between Oslo and Bergen each
day.
There will be an Information Desk at the airport, and all the teams
will be transported to the hotels by busses . The distance from the
Airport to the Hotels is only 2-3 km.
